I've been meaning to try Halcyon for quite some time. Unfortunately, the last time I tried the restaurant was still recovering from Ida. Last evening a confluence of events afforded me the chance to give it a whirl. Atmosphere-5. Bar-5. Vibe-5. Food-3. Thus, an overall 4 Star rating. I shared 3 appetizers. The Caesar Salad is obviously all about the dressing, not the Romaine, and it wasn't very good. The salad was a bit underdressed and was completely devoid of croutons. I was given extra dressing upon request, but all it did was enable the lettuce to go down a bit easier. The calamari was cooked quite well, and not overly greasy, but like so many NJ establishments lacked tentacles. The best part of calamari in my opinion. The dipping sauce was reminiscent of duck sauce, and lacked much of a punch. I would have preferred a more traditional spicy marinara. The teeny tiny tuna tacos were tasty enough, but a tad too petite. I'll definitely go back to Halcyon for the bar scene, although I'm not much of a drinker, and plan to give the burger and steak tacos a try. If you were able to eat atmosphere this place would rate a solid 5, but you can't, so it won't. I'll stick to a charitable 4 Star rating, at least for the time being. read more

We walked in here by chance on a recent Saturday evening, for a birthday eve dinner, without a reservation. Lucky for us (or a birthday miracle) both walk-in tables by the front door area were still available so we were shown immediately to the slightly better positioned table next to the bar. The server assigned to our table was attentive and courteous throughout our meal. We could tell she was very experienced in hospitality, which we greatly appreciated. As for our food; the oysters were fresh and briny, shucked perfectly, and the crab cake moist. My seared scallop entree was truly delicious, but the whole plate was maybe 6 bites and I left hungry. Husbands filet entree was portioned larger and he left happy. Generally speaking we were quite impressed with the elevated quality of food, service, and ambiance. We went here for the first time this past weekend and was a little disappointed in the experience. For the positives, the decor was beautiful, warm and comfortable. The grilled oysters were good, flavorful and good sized oysters. However, that's where it ended. We also ordered the crab cakes in addition to the oysters and it was cold. The crust was lukewarm, but the inside was cold. We let our waitress know once we realized the center was cold and her first question to us was "Did it get cold because you ate it last?" Seriously, we had 2 apps and the crab cake came after we were had 2 oysters left. When we told her I don't think that's the reason, she asked what we wanted her to do since we already ate most of it. My wife and I just looked at each other with her questions since all we wanted her to do was heat it up. We never asked for a replacement but I guess customer service was their first priority. To top it off, I also had the sautéed spinach side and it was so salty it was barely edible. I know say levels were subjective, but I've had plenty of sautéed spinach in other restaurants and never had a problem finishing it. Lastly, I have the Branzino, flavors were good and fish was fresh, but a bit small for a whole fish and considering the MP. Made reservations in advance for a dinner party and made sure that they were able to accommodate rain or shine. I was assured that there are heaters and a covered tent to protect against the elements and that they could do indoors if the outside dining wasn't open yet. Well this evening was still a little chilly and they didn't have heaters due to no delivery of propane. Chris the manager tries to tell me that there is nothing they can do and that I should have known the temperature outdoors. Mind you I drove 3hrs to put together this dinner. Other guest were dining outdoors with winter coats on and one lady even had her hood on her head so I could only imagine what it would be like when the sun went down. I refused to have my party sit outside in the cold for hours to dine with me. Once again I explain to Chris who now states he's the manager...this is not a feasible situation for a dinner party which was reserved and confirmed with his staff twice. He decides to work things on his end and seats us upstairs. Guest begin to arrive, food and drinks start to arrive as well and the evening turned out to be amazing. Aside from the parking and the seating mixup I can say each guest enjoyed themselves and the food did not disappoint. Beautiful restaurant but that is about it. This review is for the brunch service. First, the brunch menu is very limited. And expensive. That's usually fine as long as the execution on what little there is, is impeccable. The Croissant French toast is $18. It comes with sliced fruit, maple syrup, and whipped creme. Overall this was the best dish, but not worth the price. Not seeing anything of interest, I ordered two sides - 2 eggs, scrambled, for $5 (dry, overpriced) and a croissant for $4 (very bready, not flaky, and not a real French croissant). My croissant was lukewarm and a little deflated. It came with a side of butter, which didn't make any sense. Why not strawberry jam? The side of bacon for $5 was not worth it. Pro's are that the coffee is good and parking in this part of Montclair is easy. Service was poor. Wait staff seemed inexperienced. I wouldn't go again. read more

The 4 of us ate here for the first time last night. We had a reservation at 8:30, and were seated within 5 minutes of that time. Atmosphere was great, and the quality was very much up to NYC levels (with price being lower than typical nyc spot, but higher than average Montclair spot). Service was great, particularly asking about food allergies, as I myself have several. They prepared all our meals in line with my restrictions. Food tasted great and the pork chop special was amazing. Overall we had a lovely experience and would highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for NYC level quality, with a homey Montclair location (and a block from our house). read more

Halcyon is very nice night out. Went here with a group of 8. They sat us right in the front and were very accommodating for those who were late in the party. We were not rushed to order or did now wait to be seated because our entire party had not arrived. The server was very nice and knowledgeable of the dishes served. In particular the oysters. My friend is an oyster "specialist" and was firing tough questions in which the server was well equipped to answer. Impressive. The prices are moderate to pricey BUT well worth it because the portion sizes follow suit. I don't remember the last time I went to restaurant that charged a moderate/high price and the portion sizes reflected the dollar amount. Huge plus. For the food. It was excellent. I had the tuna sashimi special which was very fresh and flavorful. I had the West and East coast oysters for an appetizer. The East coast were slight briny but delicious. If you like a meatier oyster get the West coast. Phenomenal. I had the Bronzino as an entree. The only downside to my experience was that they did not fillet the whole fish, but to their defense I did not request it as I was under the assumption they would have know to do that or ask if they didn't. Oysters and more oysters. I hosted an event here for 14 people. They did not have space for 14 , so they placed us in the corner by the bar and we were on high tops. Space was very tight. I wished they'd done better and gave us more space. Service is so-so. They charged a mandatory 20% for service and we had one waitress that started 2 weeks ago. She did OK, but was on the verge of getting overwhelmed. Luckily, she had 2 support crew to clear plates and cups and etc. In my opinion, the manager should have kept a closer eye on this table. We were clearly the busy area of the restaurant on this Wednesday. Food wise, we ate everything. We ate 3 doz oysters, just about every appetizer and 14 entrees, and then dessert. We ate EVERYTHING. On my end of the table, we agree the following is good - oyster raw, oyster baked, crab cake, roaster red snapper. Not so good - paella.. so greasy and soggy , king crab legs.. not grilled, but served cold. Portions are generous. If you are getting the Branzino, you should share it with another. It had a nice atmosphere but the food really wasn't tasty or prepared well. The butternut squash soup was not sweet, it was sort of bitter and had a stale peice of toast with it. The sushi wasn't made with sushi rice and so it was almost aldente and fell apart. The swordfish was tough and was served with crab meat with sweet potato but the crab meat was sort of lost in it and didn't add anything to the dish. The shrimp pad thai had a tart flavor with really tiny shrimp. The whole meal with tip was $200 and definitely was not worth it. Do not recommend. read more

This is specifically for the bar upstairs. My party of 4 adjourned upstairs after having dinner in the brewery attached. Holy cow. Not only were the ambiance and decor fun yet mellow and relaxed, the music kicked AS*. I'm not a huge 80s music fan anymore, but they played some of the better off-beat stuff from that era and had me dancing in my chair the whole time. They also played some Portisehead and Ryan Adams, which couldn't have made me more happy. Makers Mark on the rocks for me and my friend, and beer for my husband and friend's wife. Basically we tried to move chairs but instead of saying sorry sir we don't allow it so let me find a seating arrangement for you, you just automatically take he chair out of our hands without even knowing who the hell you were. So when you get called out on your rude introduction, your bartender (robin) (who by the way didn't even know the context of the situation) off the bat refused us service. Well good thing we know where not to go. Zzzzz crowd anyway. Good luck on your terrible approach on a crowd you would like to attract but can't have. Sunday, funday for brunch with family and friends. We had brunch at Halcyon. I have been here for drinks but not for dining, because it seems to be a bit pricey. The drinks were delish and our server/manager/bartender Chris was providing us with 5 star service from beginning to end. He is a true professional and made our experience simply amazing. Truly that high-touch customer service experience that I look for when dining out. Highly recommend and this is now one of my fave places. Check out the crab cocktail for an appetizer! Halcyon is SO GOOD. We went for brunch today to celebrate my momma's birthday. Ordered grilled oysters and raw oysters to start, both were incredibly fresh and delicious. For entrees we ordered paella, filet tacos, lobster salad, and scallops. We loved them all! For dessert, we had fruit crisp and chocolate mousse. Again, everything was amazingly delicious, balanced and beautifully presented. Our waitress, Alexis, made the meal absolutely perfect. She was kind, attentive, and warm. I came in with hopes of a great restaurant, these hopes were shattered. Don't get me wrong the entrees were great besides being a little overpriced. The desserts were a hit or miss, the apple crisp and the flourless chocolate cake were divine yet the crème brûlèe was less than subpar, the crème in it was ok yet a snack pack pudding would of tasted better. The real problem here is the service, more specifically Lisa G. It started off with us waiting for about 15 minutes to get water, despite her having thee tables to serve. She continued to act as if we didn't exist and we were an inconvenience. After finishing our entrees and waiting another 15 minutes she came up and asked if we needed anything as if she was wondering why we were still sitting here. Gorgeous flowers and branches decor throughout the restaurant you feel like you're in a fairy garden It's very romantic. The crabcake appetizer was good and flavorful came with a side salad. My husband had crab sushi roll he said it was okay. Both our main entrées were absolutely delicious the steak and potatoes were cooked perfectly and a punch of flavor. Great portion of food. My Pan Seared New Bedford Sea Scallops was just WOW! Perfect pan seared jumbo scallops, oven roasted broccoli with pinenuts walnuts and raisins-and the Parsnips mash was delicate and delicious. My fiancé and I are from out of town and a good friend of ours recommended Halcyon to us a few weeks ago so we decided to take the trip to Montclair after walking around Bloomfield ave we drove to halcyon and we where greeted very kindly by the hostess that took us to our table For drinks we order the misunderstood Mai tai and the Halcyon days which we love and for our apps we ordered the burrata salad special and the octopus which where excellent for dinner we had the salmon bowl and the sole which where amazing Service and attention was great We will be back very soon read more

Went to Halcyon on February 4 at 12pm for my best friend's birthday brunch. Let me start by saying the food was pretty good. I'm going to assess the food further down but want to explain why I deem this a 2 Star location: - When our appetizers came out my friend got so excited that she accidentally knocked over her mimosa. It was pretty much full since we were early into service. The waiter seemed more annoyed by the mess than we were especially when we helped him clean up the table. He then didn't offer to get her another drink. Of course we would've appreciated a comped drink even though we made the mistake but still. - The Restaurant was about 30-40% full for the majority of our visit but yet the waiter was consistently MIA. -When our entrees were served 3 of us were not offered steak knives until the hostess overheard us mention Yelp. The grilled oysters were amazing although it took a long time to receive them. (Both times we ordered). I ordered the lobster Benedict which was okay but I was surprised to see that the lobster was fried. I ordered it due to a recommendation from my friend whose lobster wasn't fried 2 weeks prior..strange. I do think they should tell you that the lobster is fried by either updating the menu or via the server. The atmosphere was beautiful and a great crowd but the service needs some work. The prices are a little high for the service to be so bad. It's wasn't horrible but they need to do better. I'm not sure if I'll be back but my friends live in the area so I hope the service gets better so they can return. read more

The grilled oysters were amazing, this was my 2nd visit for those BUT my twin was a bit disappointed with the Lobster Benedict. The 1st time around the lobster was steamed and buttered VS this time whereas they fried it. I liked our waiter, Josh, he was clean cut and made up for his shortcomings with a nice accommodation at the end but he clearly was not trained properly. This has the potential to be an amazing restaurant. In a prime location, you have to be sure the customer service is on point - if not, you'll forget the pros. Would I return? My husband and I have been coming to this place pretty regularly for the past two years, however, we recently just had a baby and have tried twice now to go for an early dinner. Our first experience we were told they had no reservations available so we returned the following Friday at around 4:30pm and were told there were no tables available in the dinner room or bar. We passed by Halycons again on our way back around 6pm to see only open tables. Halcyon was clearly unwilling to accommodate our growing family of 3 and showed very poor customer service. My wife's birthday was this week, and like so many other people, our celebration was limited to our house. I contacted Halcyon, which is a place my wife really likes, to ask what they could do to help me try and make this as special as possible. I got in touch with Ileana who helped me put together the perfect at home meal. From the raw bar, to the octopus, and the scallops, to one of the best swordfish's I have ever had, this was a perfect meal. This restaurant bent over backwards to help me make the night perfect. One evening last month I said to my wife, "We had a nice time at Halycon, why don't we go back?" She enthusiastically agreed. Somehow the place wasn't on our radar of regular places to go and we enjoyed the time we had gone before. Seemed like a nice place to go! What a mistake. The oysters were great but the drinks came long after they were gone. While our waiter admitted it was his fault, he didn't apologize, the beginning of a trend. Our salads were quite good. Point in Halcyon's favor, to be undone by the calamari, which tasted like they came from a freezer bag from a low end supermarket, over cooked and tasteless, like clams from the sort of roadside clam shack you regret ever stopping at. What really balled us was they our waiter was watching gymnastics on TV instead of ever coming by to ask us how our meal was going. I don't mind that he is watching gymnastics, but is it too much to ask that he do it when he isn't supposed to be working? We told him and he comped the tasteless calamari after a time, but there was never a sincere apology (or any apology that we remember... maybe a perfunctory sorry) the late drinks, the utterly bad calamari, the lack of attention and the idea that nobody cared about us just sucked. I left a losing tip and a note that we won't be back. It's true! We won't. We had a great time because of each other, and that was a life lesson, but really, we could've had a nice time at dinner. I had an extremely awkward experience here. The place was completely empty when we walked in. Me and my boyfriend were the first ones in this restaurant when it opened, however after about 45 minutes of being there, everybody around us, who walked in after us, within very close proximity to our table was able to order and had their drinks and no one came to our table except when we initially first sat down for water and we had to ask for straws, we both thought it was odd there were people right next to us that were served, with drinks who came after we did while we were grossly neglected by the hostess and waiters. No one ever came to greet us or offered to take our orders either, we were just sitting there watching every customer be served around us wondering when and if they were going to even acknowledge us - as the first patrons there, this has got to be the "Worst" experience I ever had in any restaurant, and I Would never frequent this establishment again !!! The hostess who greeted us at the door acted like we did not even exist. Walked by our table several times looking very annoyed, even when we asked her for a straw. Very Strange and uncomfortable experience!
