Most of the appetizers were overly sauced and too sweet. Maybe Morimoto is catering to western tastes that prefers stronger sweeter flavors but in general you couldn't really taste the freshness of the fish or the richness of the wagyu. Steaks were just okay. Nothing to write home about. Got the Tomahawk, Porterhouse, and prime rib. It was just okay. No huge complaints nor compliments. Just average. The space is beautiful! I felt like I was in Vegas and not in Montclair NJ. There is a parking structure right across from the restaurant and it's also located steps away from Bloomfield Ave and the center of montclair. We visited for the start of their brunch menu and everything was absolutely excellent. Great service! And oh the food -- the stand outs were definitely the sushi, particularly anything that had the A5 wagyu. The hot bibimbap like A5 Wagyu was incredible! Finally was able to get around to trying Chef Morimoto's New Jersey venture. On arrival, We did have a reservation and we were seated immediately upon arrival. The Space: gorgeous space inside. Very modern looking, clean and inviting space. Service: excellent service, from the front of house, to our server, to all the other staff, everyone was attentive and knew the dishes inside and out. Drinks: I had the Tokyo smoke, which was a solid Smokey whiskey sour, was very delicious. My wife had the sake verra matcha, which she also loved it was like a refreshing take on an espresso martini with matcha instead. Would definitely recommend. Food: Toro tartare - small starter, excellent taste, the dashi it was sitting in was very delicious, really enjoyed the crunch with the caviar. Overall solid dish Surf and turf roll: really delicious roll, they blowtorch the roll in front of you. Has so much flavor and the meat just melts in your mouth. Main dish: my wife and I opted for the special Which was a marinated coulotte cut of beef, cooked to perfection, was the perfect mix of sweet and savory, the pickled ginger and wasabi added such a great element to the dish. Sides: if my mother made broccoli like this, I probably would not have been so picky growing up, would absolutely recommend. And I cannot say enough about the 100 layer potato gratin, must try. Dessert: we tried the tiramisu, unfortunately I think this is skippable. Not enough coffee flavor, just have had better. Space is pretty expansive with private rooms, bar, booth and table seating. The booths along the back wall are against a large screen which could be a bit of sensory overload for those facing it. Other than that everything was really comfortable and music and overall ambience was enjoyable and allowed for conversation. We started with the Wagyu wontons, sticky ribs and the tuna pizza. I must say the Wagyu was a little salty for me and I usually love Wagyu. We then ordered two MM rolls and each chose our own roll to do family style with. Everything tasted delicious and fresh. The prawn head from the MM rolls were crispy but the prawn's maxillipeds were a little spiky (be careful if you eat, I cut my lip a little) I did enjoy every roll -- we ordered the yellowtail, eel avocado , salmon avocado, negitoro, and the tuna avocado. Enjoyed all of them! The best but also not so best part was dessert. I absolutely love the tiramisu. The tiramisu tasted like it was soaked in a brandy and or amaretto liquor. My husband and I came to celebrate our wedding anniversary on a weekday. First off, the restaurant is stunning and everyone from the hostess to the server made it a point to wish us happy anniversary. I did not love where we seated and asked to sit more in the central of the restaurant but even though there were only 3/4 other tables taken, they said they couldnt accommodate our request because the tables were all reserved. We got there early to try to see if we could get seated earlier but it was understandably packed, so we just went to the bar and ordered drinks. We ordered fairly quickly but then it about 20 minutes to get our drinks, and the bar wasn't even that busy. There was a lady customer who came to the bar after us and she got seated before us, which was annoying bc it looked like she was also a party of just two. 15 minutes after our reservation time passed, we asked the host about our table and they're like "oh, we can seat you right away." So I was slightly confused because I wonder how come none of the hosts didn't come get us at the bar or to let us know "your table will be ready in 5 minutes"? We even told the host we'd be at the bar, and they confirmed my name with me. Then they apologized for the wait and seated us. We ordered an appetizer and 3 main dishes. Somehow we got one of the main dishes (ishiyaki A5 bap) before the appetizer, which was odd. So we finished the rice bowl before the appetizer (which was sushi) got to our table - and the rice bowl was on the salty side. We were also hoping to eat part of the rice bowl with our steaks, but since the timing was off, we ordered two extra bowls of rice. We ordered prime rib and A5 wagyu - both medium rare. The lady who brought the food to us said "here is some steak sauce in case you want some on your steak" and POURED THE SAUCE ON OUR PRIME RIB. My mouth dropped bc you just are not supposed to do that, especially in what is supposed to be a high end steakhouse. Good steaks shouldn't need anything! And we didn't even try it without the sauce. And then the wagyu came on a cast iron plates, and she said "you can cook the steaks more if you want" and flipped some steak pieces to the side and cooked our steak more, making some pieces more medium than medium rare. The bright sides of the night are that wagyu was really good though, you can tell it's quality meat; and the sushi was also very good. For the amount that we paid tonight, I do not think it was worth the experience of eating here. 3.5! Overall, this was a super fun meal that I enjoyed but not too sure if I'd be rushing to come back as a result of the combination of price, food, and service. There were 3 of us in the party and we ordered Emperor cut of the prime rib, braised black cod, creamed spinach, steamed rice, corn tempura, sticky ribs, french onion soup, and a spicy salmon roll. Portion-wise, this seemed like a good amount for us. We did not get any drinks. I wanted the Miso Honey Paloma and that was the only drink out that day. Nothing else was really catching my eye. Starting with our favorites, the corn tempura and sticky ribs were AMAZING. We originally were not going to order the corn tempura but after seeing a picture on Yelp, we had to get it. The tempura wasn't oily and was crisp. I preferred the gochujang aioli while the others in my party preferred the wasabi mayo so it was perfect for people with different tastes. The sticky ribs were crispy to perfection with a nice sweet sauce and meat that slid right off the bone. These two are a must! Next came out the french onion soup and the spicy salmon roll. The soup was great but honestly just tasted like a french onion soup. I was expecting more of an asian-food taste with the miso soup but it was still tasty. The spicy salmon roll was also very good but a classic so it didn't stand out to us. Our last course was the prime rib (medium rare), braised black cod, creamed spinach, and steamed rice. One member of our party ordered it medium rare and it was NOT to my liking. Maybe that was his preference but I really only ate the outside of the cut of the meat, however, this isn't the fault of the restaurant but of how we ordered. The emperor cut was definitely a good enough portion for us. The cod was tasty but a little fishy so probably would not order it again. The creamed spinach, we all agreed, could've used more salt. It did not have much flavor. I did love the steamed rice! Great classic. Our waitress was the sweetest! Overall service though, was slow. Our meal took way too long. Not sure if they're just understaffed because they just opened but they definitely need more servers. The interior was spectacular. It had such a vibe and added to the setting of the meal. Highly recommend the sushi and steak dishes; after all the restaurant is an asian-fusion steakhouse. We also ordered the sushi platter, soft shell crab roll, Morimoto cut prime rib, A5 bap, and black cod. The A5 is melt-in-your mouth and the prime rib was super tasty with a rather light refreshing horseradish side and tangy A1 sauce. We had a small mishap with the service, but the manager was kind enough to compliment our meal with dessert (apple pie, mousse and sorbet/ice cream). I did not love my experience. I am a loyal follower of Morimoto and have dined at many of his restaurants but the service was not it tonight. My favorite dish though was Ishiyaki A5 Bap. The A5 wagyu was incredible quality. The sushi was also excellent as per usual. One of the service issues was resolved by getting a dessert comped which was nice of them but then when I got my food boxed up there were a couple pieces of steak missing. The dining room is spacious yet seems to close in on itself with the noise, steak smoke, and rush of staff. The bar didn't have our cocktail choice (a rather simple martini) because according to our waiter, they are "not a NYC bar/restaurant so they don't have those ingredients". Oops - so NJ's palate is not refined enough for cocktail onions or blue cheese olives? I selected a single glass of wine for the entire dinner. The sushi app is very tasty and has a nice presentation. All other dishes were average and lacking presentation. Please kindly do not destroy broccoli the way you did. A half head of broccoli drenched in sauce and requiring a lot of labor. The ladies' loo is interesting as you hear all the kitchen commotion and smells like food. A manager checked in on our table and we shared our experience so that was appreciated. Was finally able to get a reservation here for a large group (yay for slow Sundays). First, the decor: I love the interior of this place. I know they took over from a trendy bar/lounge but they definitely put a nice touch over existing layout. A few tasteful light fixtures, a bonsai here and there - overall a very tasteful look. Service: everything operates on Michelin level. From the hostess, to the waiters, to the bus crew. Great adherence to the etiquette, plate changes. etc. Food: The appetizers were fantastic. A5 Wagyu is a great tasting starter, and the Kumamoto oysters are fresh and very reasonably priced. My kids are suckers for gyoza dumplings so they enjoyed the smoking hot plate presentation of that. Miso soup here is also very well presented with pour from the pot. For our main we had Chef's selection of sushi and sashimi. No surprises there. Drinks: This place has a full bar and cocktails are fantastic. The only one that was mildly disappointing is the Vesper martini. It definitely had the alcohol but for something with 5 ingredients I expected a taste to be .. I don't know, more engaging perhaps? Anyhow, that was the only ding for our dinner. Drink menu has plenty of interesting options and I went with their take on the Old Fashioned which was amazing. For appetizers we split the ribs, A5 carpaccio and Morimoto's signature sushi pizza. All were fantastic and we were really blown away by the ribs which were crispy and fall off the bone tender. For my entree I had the chef's sushi/sashimi combination which was well curated with some of your standard items interspersed with some imported cuts from Japan. Off course it was super fresh and delicious. I sampled some of the porterhouse that was ordered and it was on the same level as the best NY steak houses like Keen's and Luger's. We had reservations and I do recommend making reservations because it gets pretty busy. We were early and had drinks at the bar. The bonsai bloom was yummy and refreshing. Everything is aesthetically pleasing, from the interior to the presentation of the food and drinks. A couple at the bar recommended the surf and turf roll. I was very excited when I heard the news that acclaimed Iron Chef Morimoto was opening a restaurant in Montclair. It's a new concept from the Montclair restaurant group that blends the classic American chophouse with a Japanese flair and is well worth visiting for a date night. We arrived earlier than our reservation so we enjoyed a drink at the bar while waiting for our table to be ready. The bar is a decent size with probably about 20 seats. There's also some lounge style seating in the bar area - not sure if those are reserved or first come, first serve. The bar has a big black and gold display hanging above it - it reminded me of the little plastic streamers that you'd find on pom poms. Different but the dark colors fit the mood. The drinks were good but unlike what you'd find everywhere else. They were very specific with some ingredients that admittedly I wasn't sure what they were. The Bonsai Bloom was my drink of choice this evening! It was yuzu gin with a cucumber foam and very tasty. By time our dinner was over, I was considering having another but our waiter told me they had sold out for the evening. The Bonsai bloom has a cucumber foam that they make each morning in batches and once it's gone the drink is off the menu for the day - gotta love that daily preparation and freshness! Also tried the Tokyo Smoke which included a Japanese whiskey and was delicious as well. For food, we didn't go nuts. My eyes were definitely larger than my stomach but it was only 2 of us. We had the steak tartare and aburi sushi app to start - both were SO good. The steak tartare was great with the crostini and also just eating by itself with a fork. The sushi app had 4 decent sized rolls and was torched at our table (there's lots of presentations for many of the meals!). For dinner we split the 10oz Australian Coulotte waygu with a side of cheesy potatoes. The steak was phenomenal. I love a wagyu steak but not always willing to pay for it but when I'm Rome...The steak was cooked to our preferred temp and served on a hot plate so that if we had wanted to sear it some more, we could. It also came with the Morimoto house sauce. I'm not usually one to want sauce with a steak but I ate the steak both with and without and enjoyed it both ways. I could do without the cheesy potatoes - they were just okay and a not needed side for the showstopping steak. Didn't get dessert since the dessert menu was just your basics - ended with an espresso martini instead. Next time if we go with a group, I'll definitely be trying more from the menu. Right near Bloomfield Ave, it's located off Glenridge Ave. Valet is available for $10 or you can try to find street parking. Parking is also available in the garage right across the street so you have many options! Wow! Easily top five meals ever, if not top three. Words cannot capture this meal and do any justice, so check out the pics. The vibe is energetic and feels very NYC. The bar is lively and the bartenders know their craft. Every sip was on point. Our server Lana was fabulous! Every plate a masterpiece, with perfect textures and flavors. Went here on a Tuesday night with friends and we had a lovely time. The decor was really nice and it wasn't to loud (yet) so that we could hear one another. The waitstaff was really attentive and we ordered drinks. We got the Green Heat which was very tasty. For appetizer I had the corn tempura which was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! I don't know where to start! Valet offered exactly in front of door for $20, but a parking deck literally dead across the street. We didn't scope pricing difference, but clearly 2 options available with no far walking necessary. Opted with valet. Sat at bar for 15 mins since we arrived early, but we were finally given our drinks right when table was ready for 6:15 reservation. Sat in front section with comfy couch like seats in corner so hubby and I were able to snuggle up next to each other and not feel crowded around other diners. We started with the surf n turf (Wagyu and shrimp tempura roll) and enjoyed as they cooked the meat table-side with a torch. Fun to watch and excellent to eat! We also ordered the kushiage app, but it's literally enough for one person. Enjoyed, but I wouldn't recommend it as a shareable app. I still don't understand which meat was meant for the egg tartar sauce. It seemed like it belonged with a fried seafood piece not the chicken thigh, pork belly, or beef meatball like mix sticks it was served with. I enjoyed eating it on its own tho. Now we waited for half hour for dinner entrees. For dinner we shared a med-rare rib eye with a bowl of rice and charred broccoli. We were told if we wanted black truffle added, Chef Morimoto would come out and add for you, but we just don't like truffles. However Chef surprised us and came out to each table and welcomed us! He even helped serve our food! Mind blown! Loved his homemade steak sauce which was reminiscent of ginger, soy, sesame and teriyaki. Devine! Everyone gets to take home their mini bottle! For dessert we went with Tiramisu. Now dessert options were odd. They seemed like an after thought of what to offer that had no cohesion to the menu. It was that, apple pie, chocolate cake or ice cream. I was expecting tempura fried ice cream or a variation on numerous Japanese desserts. The tiramisu was very good with chocolate shavings on plate, few blueberries, one raspberry and a quarter piece of a strawberry. It is served again table side where waiter comes out and scoops it onto your plate. It was not heavily soaked in espresso like traditional Italian, but the lightness of it was a nice complement to the ribeye. Drinks were excellent as well, but the first I chose, Bonsai Bloom, repeated on me throughout whole meal and after. I wouldn't recommend the second which was the Sakura Highball, unless u like floral drinks. Btw most red wines are Cabernet. Not one Merlot. Our waitress was as sweet as pie, but she hovered over us way too much. Repeatedly came to the table saying "hopefully you come back and ...." Then would hover over us where we are trying to eat and she is just literally standing at our table staring at us. It honestly started to become uncomfortable. Without exaggeration I think she came to our table at least 15 times. Do you want more drinks? 4 times. Hopefully you come back 3 times. Next time I would order this ....2 times. Do you want more water ...3 times meanwhile there is a bottle on the table. Last we get check, within a minute waitress was back hovering again as we are checking it and pulling out our card. Once we handed card over and signed she disappeared into thin air. Where was the same energy throughout whole meal? Not even thank you so much for the extra tip or can't wait to see you guys again. It was just weird. By 8pm place was packed and they have a gigantic bar that everyone seemed to go to and eat at. We truly enjoyed ourselves, but there are some kinks to be worked out. Granted they only opened 10 days ago, but hopefully this business is claimed, they read the reviews and take note. Certainly would come back, but they need some more time. Menu also needs to be reworked for cohesion. Dessert options definitely made no sense at all. read more

beautiful ambiance but does it matter if the food is just mediocre? the bartenders were good and attentive . my gf and i are big foodies, we were not impressed by the food here at all and we were so excited about trying it! because of the NAME. we had a wide array of different dishes .. sushi was fresh but nothing stood out as wow and the steak and sides were very salty . i was up all night drinking water and had a stomach ache!!. we went on a tues night and the place was dead . way expensive prices for average food . you can put expensive prices on outstanding food period read more

This is a new Morimoto restaurant located in New Jersey. My husband, friend and I went here on a wednesday night and the restaurant was full of people, music and vibes. We went there a little earlier than our scheduled time and told them instead of a party of 4, we only had a party of 3. They were fine with it and got us seated within 10 minutes. The table was large for 3 people with lots of room for food and drinks. :) After we were seated, a waiter came by and introduced himself as Kyle who would be taking care of us that night. He was soft spoken but loud enough despite the music and people surrounding us. He gave us ample time to review the menu, order drinks and gave us recommendations on the menu as well. When we ordered, we were also able to order the popcorn shrimp with sauce on the side (my friend can't really handle spice so by dipping, it would be more palatable for her) so that was great :) We also had a calamari salad, sashimi, california roll, eel avocado roll, wagyu bap, and skirt steak. It arrived promptly and we shared everything on the table. My favorite is the bap but everything was amazing as usual (I used to go to Morimoto NYC when it was opened). After our filling meal, we had the tiramisu, chocolate cake and apple pie. Despite not being a fan of apple pie, the crust on this pie was delightful! Absolutely adored it. My friend also really enjoyed the tiramisu despite not being a huge tiramisu fan. Our favorite though was definitely the chocolate cake. All the desserts weren't overly sweet which made it amazing! Check-in process: Not sure if they need to get their reservations spaced out differently but they need to remove the 15min max wait for reservations, as it is unfair for you to have to wait over 15mins for a table when you have arrived within the alloted time. No seating area for people that are waiting. Bar Menu: Toro Tartare, 4.3. Delicious and fresh. Good selection of side sauces, too much Dashi soy in my opinion. Scallop nigiri, 4.0. Fresh, buttery, but way too much rice. Uni: 4.7, hokkaido uni, very tasty, buttery, and fresh. Again a tad bit too much rice. Spicy yellowtail roll: 4.8. Tasty, fresh, buttery, good ratio fish to rice. Popcorn Shrimp: 5.0. Two ways, Wasabi aioli, is literally like if you bit into a fresh warm buttery popcorn and a crispy Wasabi shrimp, add some lemon and the flavors just open up even more. Second flavor is the gochujang aioli, has a buttery sweet umami flavor to it, add lemon and it's out of this world, dare I say, cheddar cheesey?! Negitori Maki roll: 4.8. Delicious, great ratio of Toro to rice. Drinks: Tokyo Smoke, 5.0, great smoky oak flavor, egg whites makes it a creamy and light drink! Coedo Marihana Session IPA, solid 5.0. Hoppy but still a session! Coedo Shikkoku, solid 5.0. Tasty, smoky, light, black lager. Pairs well with the popcorn shrimp! Front service: 3.0. Dressed the part, but was very basic. No explanation of what the check-in process entailed, no update on table status during wait time, overall not very customer driven. For context, close to 5 parties ahead of us waiting to be seated, one party of 4+ seemed very annoyed at the waiting time and visible seating available so much that they had to ask what the update is as opposed to proactive communication that we also expected from the front host... Bar Service: 5.0. Exceptional, genuine , good knowledge of menu items and drinks, seemed very experienced and handled the bar well. While I know this is also a steakhouse, my interest was more so on the quality of fish. Steakhouse are everywhere in Jersey and to be frank, many can make a good steak but few can provide quality fresh fish at a good price.
