Fresh, delicious and good service! The one roll was chicken tempura and the other I can't remember the name but it was so good!

Diana H.

Came in for lunch on a Saturday when they first opened. Friendly staff. I'd like to return to try some of their specialty rolls. I was with my 2 young daughters so only got to try shrimp shumai, edemame, California roll and shrimp tempura roll. Everything was standard and not out of this world but they were also basic stuff so I'd def come back again and try some different rolls

I've largely been tepid on Kyoto Sushi over the years; I had a sit-down dinner there maybe six or seven years ago that was hit or miss (Kyoto Roll was really, really good, but the Godzilla Roll had a few fishy bites, which is the kiss of death for me, sushi-wise), and I avoided it for a while. That's also partly due to discovering Kenko Sushi in Lincoln Park, which is the best sushi I've ever had and puts pretty much everything else to shame. Since COVID, I've started ordering lunch here from time to time for pickup. It's a quick drive and with a little firsthand knowledge of the parking lot layouts nearby, you can easily avoid the drama on Route 23 if needed. In terms of service, you're obviously not dealing with waitstaff when picking up, but I haven't had to hang out awkwardly in the restaurant for ages waiting for my pre-ordered food to arrive - that aspect of the experience had been consistently solid, and the girl behind the register is always pleasant. Over the past few months, I've been ordering sweet potato ($5) and salmon & avocado ($6.95) rolls. Both have been decent for the most part, especially the salmon/avocado. Once, the sweet potato wasn't cooked enough, and another time there was an overly crunchy layer that was tough to chew through, but 90% of the time it's been fine. I also tried the sushi pizza appetizer with spicy tuna ($8.95) a few weeks ago - a wee bit messy but very tasty. My opinion of Kyoto overall hasn't changed too much from my first experience, but I've adjusted my expectations as well. At the risk of beating a dead horse, if you're really famished and want to go balls to the wall with special rolls, I'd head up 23 to Kenko, but the regular rolls do the job here - there's no shame in ordering from a place that is a solid double versus a guaranteed home run.

Horrible service at this location in Cedar Grove, came in on Saturday** with my family (entire place was empty) and the service was so horrendous that we walked out. I'm glad I did because I shared our experience with my neighbor and they mentioned they had food poisoning after ordering food here. We left and went to Miga sushi in Livingston. Took another 15 minutes but the food was absolutely delicious and the service was wonderful! Highly recommend this place instead.

Great spot, great service, always happy and quick to see you. I have been here a couple times and my favorite is the Spicy California Roll dinner (great price) and the Chicken Tempura Roll. The Hibachi Noodles were very good too. Tonight I got the Fantasty Roll, it was good. Not my favorite, I wish the mango was sweeter but it is not their fault. I also wish the roll had a bit more of a kick to it and something to mellow it out like cucumber or avocado maybe. I just prefer the Chicken Tempura rather than this Roll. I got the Steamed Pork Gyoza and they were great, filling is juicy and outside is nice and soft. One of my new favorites. (Of course I had to get the strawberry soda to go along with this meal!!) Overall, great spot and a classic go-to I can rely on.

Even with the reviews, I highly underestimated this place. We ordered the steak hibachi, kani salad, and beef negimaki and wow everything was so good. The environment is nice as you can tell a lot of locals visit. We sat for inside dining and everything came out quickly as well. We will certainly be back.

Fresh and delicious seafoods and wait staff is most attentive. My hubby loved their soup udon minus the chicken.

I went into Kyoto with a friend for lunch on a weekday. She's been going there for years, but it was my first time. I definitely enjoyed my experience! The food was good and fresh and the restaurant itself is very comfortable. The thing I think was most memorable was The variety of cold appetizers they offered. There were things like sushi tacos sushi pizza stuffed tuna appetizer... It was all very unique interesting. if i could've gotten it all I would have! I'll definitely return :)

I'd call Kyoto Sushi a fairly standard sushi restaurant. There's seating for about 16 I'd say, with a lot of takeout going on. I visited recently and was treated very nicely. The sushi I ordered was fresh and delicious. I didn't try anything overly exotic, but fresh and delicious is enough to satisfy me in the sushi realm. I would recommend Kyoto Sushi III for very casual dining or takeout.

And after sitting there for a while, I understood why. This place is clearly built for takeout and delivery. It looks like a Chinese takeout spot that decided to throw a couple of tables inside and call itself a restaurant. The sushi? Fuggedaboutit. I ordered several rolls, and I swear the portions were so small I thought they forgot half the ingredients. For the prices they charge, the amount of food you get is ridiculous. Everything tasted extremely average and looked cheap. Nothing about this meal made me think, "Yeah, I'm coming back here." At one point I was so disappointed that I just packed the food up and took it home. Meanwhile, the place was full of Uber Eats and DoorDash drivers coming in and out picking up orders. Apparently, THAT is the real restaurant business here. Listen, nobody is asking for Nobu. But if you're going to charge restaurant prices, at least give me restaurant-quality food and portions. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. Save your money and go somewhere else. There's plenty of better sushi around. Jersey verdict: Fuhgeddaboudit.

The interior is very minimalistic and modern, although the tables were a bit close together for my liking. We both ordered the signature temaki set and had the mushroom dip to start. The dip came with only a couple chips, but fortunately, our waiter brought out a refill for us. The dip was surprisingly good and I would get it again! Unlike other places, the handrolls are semi-DIY as you put the rice and toppings onto the seaweed itself. As a slow eater, I've found that the seaweed usually gets soggy at other places by the time I get to the last couple pieces, so this was a fun alternative! For dessert, we ordered the matcha basque cheesecake, which had a strong matcha taste, and the cookies, which I could have lived without.

I've had the pin for about 40 years and who knows how long she'd had it before me. First time at this restaurant in a meh kind of mood. Asking for an egg that wasn't on the menu, asking for togarashi spice ... it was almost closing time I was hangry. I felt a lot better after eating their warm delicious soup. I went across the way for a beer at Montclair brewery which never disappoints either and the carnival (yay montclair). I went home just to realize that the dress rebelled and the pin fell off (no shade on the funnel cake). I retraced my steps but pretty much knew it was a lost cause. But the pin meant so much to me so I decided I would call around on the very off off off chance anyone would have found it. The brewery didn't have it, my car, my lawn, the carnival was a mess, what are the odds? I certainly would not have left it at the restaurant because I was just sitting there. But why not call right? Guess what?! Ken- at Chef Chef was so happy when I called "I remember you! I found your pin in the bathroom! It's here!
