For drinks, we ordered the Raspberry Moon and a matcha latte. Both were colorful, well-presented, and really tasty, a nice way to start the meal. The food itself was an experience. Hand roll heaven! I booked this spot for a weekday birthday dinner for my friend for 7 people (5 adults + my two kids, 9 and 11) on OpenTable. The reservation required a credit card but I was able to mention a birthday. We were seated right away at a nice window table with a bench, which made it easy to fit everyone. We ordered a bunch of small plates and not a single miss: Tuna Crudo -- fresh, simple, and kid-approved Japanese Potato Salad with Ikura -- lightly creamy with a salty, briny pop Asari Clam Soup -- loaded with clams, miso; buttery and comforting Furikake Cottage Fries -- hot, round crispy ridges with a ketchup-y dip, very snackable for everyone Spicy Tuna Dip -- gone in about 60 seconds For the temaki (hand rolls), they recommend 5 per person. They do something a little different and honestly pretty fun. The fillings come out on flat sticks in a wooden holder (kinda like a taco stand), and you get boxes of nori (seaweed sheets) on the side. You slide the filling onto the seaweed yourself and eat it right away, so everything stays nice and crisp. It's a little DIY, but in a good way. While they offer 3 Temaki preselected sets, you can also order a la carte. I went with the Signature Set (tuna poke, XO scallop, coconut shrimp, salmon serrano, cucumber black sesame) and was really happy with it. We also got also got 2 sets of California rolls for the girls. My brother's Everything Bagel hand roll was a fun surprise. It tasted just like one. Upon arrival, we noticed the sushi bar dominating about one-third of the eatery. The ambiance is best described as elegantly minimalistic. The host greeted us warmly and led us to our seats at the sushi bar. As we browsed the menu, we chose the following: Appetizer - Winter Special: Miso braised leeks - 3.5/5 stars. The outer leaves were still intact, making it less than ideal as we consumed this appetizer. Thus, I deducted half a star for that. I did enjoy the char on the leek and the sauce. The Signature Set, which includes 5 temaki rolls (U-shaped): 1. Tuna poke - 5/5 Stars. Simply divine. The crispy shallots gave it a textural contrast to the tuna temaki itself. 2. X.O. Scallop - 4/5 Stars. The scallop should have been the star; however, the X.O. sauce was used too generously. It overpowered the scallop, preventing us from fully appreciating its sweet, buttery, and briny notes. 3. Coconut Shrimp - 3/5 Stars. The shrimp was made into a paste and deep-fried. While this is a favorite among many, according to the itamae, the flaked coconut and breadcrumbs provided plenty of crunch, but the shrimp's natural sweetness and juiciness were lost. 4. Salmon Serrano - 5/5 Stars. Fresh and perfectly balanced by the sharp and delicious heat of the serrano peppers. 5. Cucumber Black Sesame - 4/5 Stars. Bold in flavor, which surprised me since it was the final temaki in the set. I was expecting something lighter and sweeter, as most Japanese restaurants end their sushi with the final piece with sweetness. The sauce is plum-forward, and the black sesame masks the cucumber's lightness. The seafood is extremely fresh, but the itamae, at times, drowned the temaki with the sauce. Ideally, the sauce should enhance, and not overshadow, the seafood. The service was polite and attentive. The itamae explained each piece as it was served, and the servers ensured our cups were always full. While the sushi bar occupies about one-third of the space, there are also tables that comfortably seat groups of four or more. We've tried to dine here a few times. It's been a difficult reservation. You can accord that to one of two things, or maybe both. One is that it appears to be on the small side as far as seating. The other would be that it's been a popular place to dine. The menu is different than expected of what might be viewed as a sushi restaurant. It's also limited in size when compared with other sushi restaurants. The sushi is presented differently. We did not find any cut rolls on the menu. The rolls are all akin to hand rolls, though diners wrap them on their own at their table. I did not know how to adequately describe this process, so I consulted AI to obtain the following paragraph. "Nami Nori serves high-quality, innovative temaki (hand rolls) in an open, U-shaped "taco" style with warm rice and crispy nori. They offer a variety of flavors, from classic combinations like tuna avocado to unique options such as tuna poke with crispy shallots, coconut shrimp with green curry, and spicy crab dynamite with a crunchy rice puff topping. The rolls are intended to be eaten right away to appreciate the crispness of the nori and the warmth of the rice." Our own experience is as follows. We started by ordering the recommended 5 rolls each. Once we ordered those we decided to add the caviar appetizer. While the caviar itself was very good, we found the accompaniments less so, as we felt the rice chips and onion cream to be too heavy for such a delicacy and think the caviar could be better used as an addition to the temaki. As to the temaki rolls, we each selected our own assortments, rather than go with the house suggested "sets" of 5 tamaki rolls. Among those we ordered were the spicy tuna, spicy lobster, yellowtail + scallion, toro + scallion, red crab California, and spicy crab dynamite. All were really, truly, excellent. It's a BYOB establishment in Montclair, unlike their other NY and Florida locations. We did not partake in dessert. Service was good, though it could have been better. We were initially presented with someone else's bill. Seating also feels cramped. Perhaps we should have eaten outdoors. All in all, we will be back. It was worth a repeat, though it is a pricey meal ($166 at a BYOB) compared with other sushi restaurants, though not by enough to be a discouragement. Lastly, I must mention that I've tired of playing the Jerry F. game. Huh? Jerry F. is another NJ-based Yelper who retaliates by posting an OH NO to every one of my reviews when I dared disagree with one of his reviews with an OH NO. It's a shame one cannot have an honest disagreement, or a different experience, without being targeted with vengeance, as it's been tit for tat ever since. Thank goodness they have opened a handroll restaurant outside of NYC! Great place to enjoy hand rolls in Montclair. Had a reservation on a week night and we were seated immediately. The staff was very friendly and explained everything to us perfectly. The restaurant itself is quite modern looking and you can choose to sit at a table or at the counter to have your meal prepared. Started off with the shishito peppers, served with a honey miso, definitely needed for those surprise spicy shishitos that come through. Really tasty start to the meal. Went right into the hand rolls afterwards. The nori stays in plastic until you pull it off so that it remains crispy and fresh until you are ready to eat. We loved all the hand rolls we tried, but the stand out to my wife and me was definitely the poached lobster roll, absolutely delicious with the bits of potato on top. We had a show to watch at the Wellmont theater right next to Nami Nori so this was the perfect place for our pre show meal. Unfortunately, there was nothing available only to book for a table for 5, but I saw that I was able to book for table for 2 or 3. It's a small restaurant with 2 counter seating where you can watch the chefs as they prepare for your food. We sat at the table service since we have a large party and the seats were comfortable. We ordered the spicy tuna dip and enjoyed it very much. The chips are light and the tuna was seasoned well. They specialize in hand rolls and I ordered a la carte since there's specific items I want to try. The eggplant was marinated with red miso and paired with gobo chips to give it some texture. The uni was fresh and creaming and didn't need anything else to steal their spotlight. I also really enjoyed the fried oyster, which was perfectly fried and didn't feel oily at all. I love how it was paired with ume pickled onions to balance out the grease. The ebi was big and very refreshing together with the yuzu kosho soy sauce. I was seated at the counter and while in the restroom I came back to my wine having been opened and presented in an ice bucket. From there my waiter came over and explained how the menu worked. I knew I wanted to try an assortment along with a side or two. The gentleman next to me was having the potato salad so I asked and he said it was outstanding. I went with that along with the Signature Set and would go from there if I wanted more. I was served the potato salad first as the hand rolls were being constructed and served one by one. The man was right, this potato salad was very, very good, much creamier than I normally would have it but tasted fantastic. I took bites throughout the meal because the sushi was my main focus. The hand roll started coming, two biters, and they were mind blowingly good. I would say it took between 5-8 minutes in between rolls since he was also making them for the four people next to me, the timing was really good in between. The fish was so fresh, the flavors were outstanding and the textures were all there. At the end I decided to go for one more roll, the spicy tuna and that also did not disappoint. I was shocked that this entire entire meal cost $60 with tax AND tip. This is one of the best sushi experiences I've had and definitely returning with friends. Very disappointed with my experience. I first had Nami Nori in Miami and loved it. I was so excited to bring my friend to this location for the first time. I got the lobster, shrimp, toro, yellowtail, and lobster rolls. 3 of the 5 rolls are underwhelming and under seasoned. The spicy tuna dip was too salty. And the sauce for the mochichurros (which were my favorite in Miami) was way too thick. It was like..curdled. Like a cold butter. I had to pick up pieces of it with my chopsticks and balance it on my churro. Extremely disappointed. When I asked the server if that was how the sauce was supposed to be, he said each location does it differently and maybe it had to do with the piping tip the kitchen used. Nami Nori West Village was a favorite spot of mine for years, and I'm so happy they opened one in NJ for when I'm in my hometown and craving it! The restaurant is spacious and cozy, with a mix of table seating and bar seating. Highly recommend making a reservation especially for dinner, since they get pretty busy. All the appetizers were so good - my favorite was definitely the corn ribs. Such a simple concept but the execution and flavor profile were exquisite. I always choose to build my own set of 5 temaki when I come here, but they do have set menu options which is good if you can't decide on what you want. Our latest visit was somewhat disappointing. They made some changes which we weren't fond of. My mom is very sensitive to onion and the mushroom dip which we used to love- fell short. It had really large pieces of onion mixed into the mushrooms. This was the first time that my mom couldn't eat the dish, and I didn't enjoy it as much as I had previously. It was noticeably different. We also really liked the coconut shrimp hand roll previously- but now they added little fried mini shrimp heads to the topping which was off putting. Better to keep it simple, not sure what prompted such a change. There was too much lemon zest on the scallops. There were chunks of onion throughout the salmon and tuna. I don't know why they would ruin the delicious fish flavor with such big pieces of onion, but it was disappointing. Service was fine, and overall ambiance is very nice- the decor is sleek, simple and modern. I thought I had found a hand roll gem in NJ, but I won't be coming here again. My stepdad enjoyed the vegan set and had no complaints, so perhaps if you're just sticking to vegan hand rolls- this may still be the spot for you. If you don't like onions (chunks of onions).. this is not your place. read more

Located on busy Bloomfield Ave, Nami Nori is the quiet in the storm. The interior is very beige, but it's the food that is meant to shine. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I dined alone, at lunch, and sat at the counter. The seating was very comfortable. I did not opt for the lunch special, because I really wanted a full experience. They have some fun non alcoholic drink options (it's BYOB). I had a fall special which was Asian pear, rosemary, cardamom, and ginger beer. Absolutely delicious! For my food order: Fall Special- Cream of Matsutake Mushroom Soup w/ Chive Oil- the texture was a bit too thick, but had wonderful umami flavor Temakis- Ocean Perch, XO Scallop, Uni, Lobster, and Shrimp - these were all exceptionally beautiful and delicious. The scallop might have been my favorite. Delicate, sweet, perfect! Also, the Uni was divine. Dessert- Fall Special Apple and Persimmon Crisp - I love persimmons and they are woefully under utilized. This dessert was a dream. Perfect level of sweetness. Gorgeous fruit cooked just right, with little crispy crunchies, topped with pillowy whipped cream. Paired this with a Matcha Latte. Overall, this was a wonderful dining experience and I cannot wait to return. read more

Amazing! The fish tasted incredibly fresh and everything was delicious. Our server was great and the food came out quickly. The restaurant is pretty small, so we were sat very close to the people dining on either side of us. Definitely on the pricey side, but perfect for special occasions. read more

I really enjoy this spot; it's one of my favorite spots to go to in Montclair. I would highly recommend a reservation as they seem to be mainly reservations so hard to walk-in and get good seating. When I stopped by, I was able to be seated outside and the weather was fairly decent at the time...just a bit warmer. The food here is wonderful and just the right amount if you order the sets. I'll probably go with my own selection next time but the sets are a great way to be introduced to the food. Awesome service, awesome food, awesome place. read more
