I've been coming to Kim's for over a decade, and it's always been one of my favorite sushi spots. I used to rave about it and recommend it to everyone. Unfortunately, over the past year, I've noticed the specialty rolls have gotten smaller and smaller, to the point where it's become disappointing. The taste is still great, but it's hard to justify paying $25+ for a roll that looks like the one in my attached photo/video. At that price, I'd expect a portion that reflects the cost. It feels like the value has steadily declined, which is frustrating as a long-time customer. I genuinely hope this is something they address because I'd love to continue supporting and recommending Kim's. In today's economy, spending that much on such a small portion just doesn't feel worth it anymore. Also, the music has become another downside. I love Kim's! I was introduced to Kim's years ago and when I ordered for myself it was during Covid times so I never had a chance to sit in. This past weekend I was able to dine in with my friend around 5:30 pm on a Sunday and we were able to be seated. I did call in advance to find out about reservations and they said it was first come first serve no reservations. We were stared off with complimentary miso soup and salad with house dressing, that dressing was incredible. My friend ordered the edamame and I ordered the Kani salad it was so fresh and refreshing. My friend ordered the Philadelphia speciality roll, I ordered the west orange roll and we both shared the Tony roll. A lot of fried roll options which felt pretty heavy but even their traditional rolls weren't anything to write home about. Wow, just wow! I got here and there was a slight wait but that just goes to show how popular it is, and for good reason. The sushi selection was immense and everything looked good, I ended up going with a West Orange Roll, a California Roll and some Salmon Sashimi all of which tasted excellent. The environment was great, the restaurant is on the smaller side but definitely makes good use of space. If you are in the area and looking for sushi this is definitely THE place to be! read more

The restaurant is cozy so you should get there early. If you're a sushi novice you will like the seared options as well as the tempura options. This is our go to sushi spot. Staff are friendly and the sushi offerings are fresh and spot on. We always get an assortment of fatty tuna, uni, eel, botan shrimp, scallop, etc and are never disappointed. The service is good. we normally get a nice meal but it all went wrong when my parents went there to celebrate new years with the $99 deluxe sashimi platter, thinking it was going to be an extravagant dish due to its price. Much to their dismay, the sashimi took about 20 minutes to arrive, and from first glance, it was tiny. There was hardly any food on the plate, with more shredded beet than anything else. The plate consisted of razor thin and mediocre slices of sashimi. The variety was and is probably worth at most $30. This is a great spot if you're looking to get 100 dollars worth of beets. My parents were still hungry after eating the sashimi platter and was debating whether or not to go and get more food at McDonald's because they weren't full. We have been loyal customers at Kim's sushi for years, but after that sashimi deluxe platter I don't think we're going back anymore because it left a really bad memory. I've loved Kim's sushi ever since their original restaurant in Lincoln Park. They used to sell fresh seafood in their restaurant i the original location. We've always love their dragon roll, shrimp salad roll, Philadelphia roll. After the next gen took over, they kept the classic rolls and got creative with their rolls and added a wide selection of rolls with the right combination of ingredients. We like Jorge, French kiss, volcano, Elizabeth roll. But we have not had any bad roll from Kim's. It is true that it's own by Koreans, but Kim's sushi just has a flavor that no other sushi restaurant has. You'll have to try it to understand. Service is always excellent both for takeout and dine-in (back in the days but I heard the dining room has been reopened). The decor is also modern and friendly. We ordered a sushi boat for takeout this time. Everything was great. Must try sushi restaurant. read more

Sushi dives are rare. Sushi dives with outstanding food are even more rare. If you're looking to devour some amazing sushi and, like me, could care less about the ambience then Kim's is most certainly for you. The quality is fantastic, prices reasonable and decor dismal. But the decor is all part of the charm. And if you decide to eat there and aren't sure about the food, the constant barrage of people wandering in and out to pick up what seems to be endless takeout orders should probably convince you. This is a local gem unlike any other. They also have a lease on another location in Livingston (old 88 Cafe) that they assure me should be open by May. Meantime, the 10 minute trek to West Orange is a small price to pay for something so delicious. read more

WOW. Honestly I was skeptical when my fiance's family insisted we come here for dinner recently. It doesn't look like much even as you pull into the parking lot. But WOW the food is good. Everything tasted ao high quality and you can tell how much they care about what they put on the plate. My sushi rolls were great, but the salmon sashimi appetizer they comped us was a real star. A few friends and I placed an order for takeout before realizing that they were open for dining in again, so we will definitely be giving that a try that next time. We still splurged on a feast to celebrate surviving a busy week, and Kim's came through with fresh tasting, delicious sushi. We knew the sushi was definitely freshly made as we had ordered a baked roll, and it was still very warm at the end of a 20 minute drive home. They arranged our large order in a platter, and even included an extra roll for free! The sushi was well made, held together well even with some travel, had a good proportion of rice to fish, and the rolls were covered in a generous amount of toppings and sauce. That said, our only two considerations were the wait it took to get the sushi - we waited for 30 minutes longer than expected in the parking lot, and that we couldn't tell which roll was which when they were arranged all together in a platter. It would be nice to know/have them labelled on the container so we knew which rolls we would order again in the future or not - my favorites was the roll covered in spicy crab and the roll drenched in brown and eel sauce and spicy mayo. We also noticed that some rolls were 6 vs 8 pieces, which would have been nice to know ahead of time when ordering. Overall, we loved the quality of the sushi and will be coming back. This place is popping! Looks like their takeout business is booming! The parking lot is crazy full once the bank closes we parked at the bank and walked over. The place is your average sushi restaurant setting. It is BYOB! And they give you real wine glasses instead of the fake ones or cups. The amount of options on their menu was a bit overwhelming though. But they also had a fair amount of cooked sushi which I appreciated at the moment. The sushi was delicious. My favorite was the spider roll. Everything piled up on top had great texture. The dessert was a bit disappointing in the sense that you could tell they just brought mochi ice cream from hmart. Also the free sample is a big plus at both sites. Parking is a challenge at times at Kims given the site and high volume on the busy road. Solid sushi place with a lot of variety of rolls to choose from. We got the sushi set (regular), Rich Cobra Roll, Black Dragon Roll, and Rainbow Roll. All were decent. They do douse a lot of sauce over their rolls. Had to scrape some off because it got to be too much for me after 1-2 pieces. The Rich Cobra roll was good, but two large unagi slices were just placed on top of the whole roll -- they were cut with the roll, so it was hard to evenly divide the unagi. They gave us 2 pieces each of tuna and salmon nigiri on the house. It was my first time here, but my partner said that they do this for every table that orders a combination set or just a lot of sushi. I noticed that the tables next to us got chef specials on the house too, and they were all different. It's a really cute thing that they do. I don't know why exactly they do it, but I like to think that they're finding a nice way to use up some leftover ingredients they couldn't fit into their other orders. Overall, I would return, but I'm not in a rush to return. The quality of the sushi is fine -- not the best, but not the worst. Love, love, love! I'm not a super fan of sushi places but this one hits the spot every time. Very small parking lot, recommend to come early for quick seating and serving time. I took my sister here for her birthday recently since she loves her Japanese food and she was delighted by the quality of the salmon. She ordered the Dawn Roll to eat there and the Yuzu blossom roll to go on their recommendation. It's the sister store of Ilpoom (same owner) at a more affordable price and it's walk in, first come first serve kind of deal. I would say it's pretty no frills still, with a small space. Our table was kinda lopsided in one corner but they were so attentive that they noticed right away when my sister was trying to fix the table. Sweet potato rolls and their classic roll was a great mix of veggies! The only negative that day was their card machine wasn't working (it might have been a one-off thing since everyone around us had to do the same and we weren't warned beforehand) so we had to pay cash... but luckily we were able to use Venmo instead. Also the secret menu item that they comp you with is a great way to reuse their own scraps in a delicious way. Takeout is solid but it's totally worth dining in! read more

Take Out system via their website has always been touch and go, but lately consistently getting worse. Ordered $200 worth of food, said it would take an hour. No message that it was ready. When picked up all the fish was tepid and smelled a bit. Soups cold. Had obviously been ready a while. Text Message food was ready arrived 20 min after I got home. They're slacking off on service. This place is not just a letdown -- it's downright dangerous and offensive. I went in based on all the glowing reviews, but either people are being paid to write them or they have incredibly low standards. The sushi? Bland and questionable. But that's not even the worst part. I witnessed one of the staff repeatedly using the same dirty cloth to "clean" the prep area, over and over, with zero concern for hygiene. Unsurprisingly, I came down with full-blown food poisoning the next day -- vomiting, fever, the works. That alone should be enough to shut the place down. To make matters worse, one of the owners (Keen Pei, I think) came by to make small talk and proceeded to make an extremely inappropriate and xenophobic "joke" when I mentioned I was an immigrant. Something about "dodging ICE" -- completely disgusting and uncalled for. If you care about your health, your dignity, or basic decency, skip this place entirely. read more

They are attentive to gluten free needs and have GF soy sauce. I've always heard about Kim's Sushi, but this was my first time trying their sushi! I got take out by ordering through their website. When I arrived, I called the number on the wooden fence to inform them about my arrival, and they brought out my food. The first thing I realized when I unpacked all the food was that the quantity was very little. From my experience, typically a roll would have 8 pieces, but there were only 6 pieces per regular roll. The French Kiss roll had 8 pieces, but it was $16 which is more expensive than my two regular rolls combined. Although the quantity was very little and not filling, I did like the quality of the rolls. I had the two regular rolls while my boyfriend had the French Kiss roll. I liked both the crab meat rolls I got, they were flavorful and delicious. I really like the tempura crab meat and thought it went well with the teriyaki sauce. I did wish my roll had spicy mayo instead of regular mayo, but to add spicy mayo was an extra 50 cents. Overall, I really enjoyed the food, but the pricing was a bit too much in my opinion, especially for the special rolls. The sushi was very yummy, but I have had similar sushi in the area with the same quality but less pricey. However, I would recommend this place to any sushi lovers who is willing to splurge a bit! read more
