    Wasabi R

I have ordered from here many times and never left a review because the food was so appealing that I simply forgot. This time was different, which is why I am keeping it fair and scoring the way I am. I ordered shumai their Japanese dumplings with shrimp, Wasabi R which has tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and avocado inside and outside with 3 different tobiko. I also got the sashimi dinner (15 Pieces of assorted fish, with miso soup). The dumplings were nicely cooked and good. The sashimi was fresh with an assortment of various pieces of raw fish. I highly recommend it. The Wasabi R is where things got weird for me. The tobiko lacked taste, I guess it is for aesthetics more than anything. It was a very average roll. I would not order it again. They are always fast delivering so no points lost there. This time I was not blown away. I am assuming it was an off night. I normally order from here, when I can't get up the hill to Kim's. This place is good though.

We got takeout. The sushi was good for the price point. Fish felt fresh but the sushi rolls weren't wrapped properly. Half the pieces would open up from being picked up or the rice would fall off the seaweed. But we did appreciate the ratio to rice to filling. They gave us a salad with our order which was nice. Decent spot for sushi craving without breaking the bank and no frills.

This is based on my take out experience. I will come back to dine inside so May 5 stars is in their future. I ordered take out and came to the restaurant to order. During my wait for the food I was able to make some observations. Nice street side set up for outside dining. They are very clean and prepared for COVID as best they can. All the staff were wearing masks, the tables appeared socially distant, inside they have nice decor and lighting including lighting in the menus. Nice touch! They have a Buddha that greats you as you walk past the bar into the dining room. Further down on the left is a Sushi bar. They appear to have a good selection of food and drinks. The manager/ hostess was extremely accommodating while waiting for my take out order, offering bottled water and a seat on a very comfortable couch. She greeted some regulars by first name and was very cordial. I ordered shrimp with pineapple which was delicious. They gave me edamame on the house which was very nice. I said I was visiting friends who live in New City and said I would take a ride from Brooklyn to eat here because they were so nice. Based on this simple first interaction and vibe I'm the restaurant I would say they look like a good choice. I will update my review after my next visit.

    Tofu Teriyaki Dinner Box
    Amanda I.

Finally tried this little place and was pleasantly surprised! The tofu teriyaki dinner box was very good and came with lots of extras for a good price. Just vegetarians be mindful that my tofu & veggies came with shrimp shumai and a california roll (imitation crab) which wasn't listed on the menu. I ordered to go and my food was ready pretty fast. I would probably only order to go from here since it was VERY small on the inside, only like two tables. But will definitely order from here again.

Love it! Great lunch special prices. Will keep getting delivery from them. Spicy tuna roll is delicious, and great with wasabi.

First off, there's parking the back which is super helpful since it's such a busy street. When we first walked in I thought it was take out only. There was only a few chairs by the sushi bar and two small tables. We were seated quickly though. The staff was friendly and attentive. We started with edamame. Came out super hot and salted perfectly. Went with the shumai too and almost wish we didn't. It definitely was not my favorite part of the meal, skip that for sure. The sushi was fantastic though! Definitely stole the show. We went with a spicy crab roll, shrimp tempura, soft shell crab and I believe a pink lady roll. Huge pieces in each roll. Rice was perfect, the fish was fresh and plentiful too. The presentation was also beautiful. The wasabi was powerful and fresh. I can definitely see myself coming back and just grabbing some takeout. While this place is small it still has some nice ambience to it. It's quaint and decorated and you have a full view of the chefs making sushi. Overall it's a great find!

    Jumbo shrimp teriyaki

Saturday night take out and wanting to try something new this was what was decided on. For one my main concern with take out is that it won't be hot when in make the fairly short trip back home to eat it that wasn't the case here. Everything was sealed tight and good and hot. So with plenty to choose from I picked the the jumbo shrimp meal. They didn't skimp on the shrimp which is a peeve of mine when ordering similar entrees but what went wrong is that it was way waaaay too many onions in it, and they were only cooked a little bit. So it wasn't the worst thing and the sauces that came with the meal were good but it was too oniony for me and at nearly $20 that was quite high. The food itself was good. I ordered the food right here through the yelp app and it was very smooth, food was bagged and ready 20 min. After ordering which is a good look.

California Roll & Shrimp Tempura Roll (2)
    Sam M.

I ordered two shrimp tempura and one California roll. The rolls were bigger than usual, but a bit sloppy. The wasabi wasn't properly separated so a couple pieces had strong wasabi flavor. Overall, it was decent sushi. It satisfied my craving, but it's not some place I would go unless I was in the area again

I spend a lot of time in West Orange and I was pleasantly surprised to see on Yelp that another sushi joint opened up in this town. I always try to support the local businesses here. I've been trying to get to try out Wasabi Sushi and today was the day. I like that it is more intimate and smaller than most other sushi places (it's actually very small). Some places give you free hot tea, some charge three dollars per person for hot tea: here they charge $1 for unlimited hot tea which I think is a good thing. And the tuna/avocado, yellowtail/scallion, tuna/cucumber & avocado/cucumber rolls. All good. The yellowtail roll was a little chewy though. Pros: 1) Good service. 2) They have a very convenient parking lot in the back. I feel that the rolls were reasonably priced for what we received. Cons: The flatscreen TV on the wall looks more like an iPad - maybe they could put a bigger TV on the wall. I also wish they were open a little bit earlier so they could offer lunch delivery a little before 11 am. Also, maybe they should get sugar packets here instead of the little bowl of sugar. I plan on trying the Udon noodle soup next.

When I first walked in, I was asked if I was "dining in or take out". I was taken back by that type of greeting. The place is small maybe that's why. It's possible this place is known for take out and majority of the customers dine-out. A simple hi how may I help you would have been nice. They were quick with the service, however, we were the only ones eating indoors and not takeout. They came to the table at least 4 times ready to take my order, which is all good. Karen eventually told me to call her over when I was ready to place my order. For my appetizer, I ordered the scallop buttered yaki. I was in heaven, I love scallops and the teriyaki sauce added to it made this dish even more tasteful. I was satisfied. I ordered three different rolls. The first one was volcano roll, this had crab meat on top very flavorful. Second, I had the madness roll, very yummy, salmon on top of the spicy tuna had me wanting to order another. I highly recommend getting these two rolls. However, I was a bit disappointed with the third roll, the Amazing roll. I specifically asked for this roll because it had mango in it. When I got the spicy tuna roll, the mango wasn't inside the roll, but rather laid on top. I don't know if mango are in season or not, but the mango did not taste like mango at all. I wouldn't recommend that roll. The Amazing roll was similar to a simple spicy tuna roll, I was better off ordering a regular roll for half the price. They do have dessert, which wasn't on the menu. They had deep fried ice cream, but ended up ordering the green tea mochi ice cream, my favorite thing in the whole world. That was my favorite item. For your first time here, if it's not busy, I advise you sit at the sushi bar. I sat by the window near the front entrance it was a bit cold. From the wait staff to the bus staff, everyone was running around like crazy. The table next to us, I heard them ask for the manager because they messed up an order with an allergy associated with it. Not good. First things first.. we got out miso soup and my bowl had rice stuck to it on the outside. I thought it was weird but I brushed it off because it was just on the outside. House salad was fine. But one of the women bussing tables tried to bring us a second salad because they were clearly overworked and overly busy. I am currently disgusted because I got to the end of my drink and there was the same old rice at the bottom of my cup as there was on the outside of the miso soup bowl. The sushi was fine. I think it's becoming more noticeable that they drench their rolls in sauce to possibly hide the quality of the fish. I'm not saying it was fishy at all, but wow the sauce is so overwhelming. I got the Elizabeth roll and I had one piece - it had too much sauce so I took some off the top and thought it would fix it. Nope. The entire inside of the roll was so unpleasantly soft and tasted like sauce and mayo.. I am still nauseated thinking about that bite. I didn't taste any piece of fish. I am so so disappointed. The seafood pancake had very long strands of squid which were hard to chew through. Another time that I ordered the seafood pancake. Everything was chopped up in small bites and it was a much more pleasant experience. Lastly.. they bussed our table and left our half eaten food on the floor next to us because I guess they were so busy they forgot about it. It was very chaotic in there last night. They brought us the wrong mochi ad well. It seemed like they were focused on getting people tables instead of pushing out quality food. Very disappointing.

If you are a true sushi purist, you know that the best experiences often hide behind the most…read moreunassuming storefronts. This place is the definition of a hidden gem--a masterclass in traditional sushi sitting quietly on a culinary wasteland of a street. The commitment to quality here is staggering. This isn't your standard neighborhood joint slinging spicy mayo rolls; the seafood here boasts absolute freshness, with rare fish flown in weekly directly from Japan. You will find cuts here that are nearly impossible to source at standard sushi restaurants, elevating the experience to something you'd typically only find at an exclusive omakase counter. Let's talk about the tuna. The vast majority of sushi spots try to pass off cheap, frozen yellowfin as a premium offering. Not here. They source incredibly high-quality Spanish Bluefin--the exact same caliber of fish utilized by Michelin-starred establishments. What truly sets them apart is their ability to offer the complete trinity of bluefin cuts: the deep, ruby-red lean akami, the perfectly marbled chu-toro, and the rich, melt-in-your-mouth o-toro. The menu reads like a love letter to the ocean. Finding high-grade yellowtail belly can be a challenge, but here, it is a staple of exceptional quality. For those with an adventurous and educated palate, the chefs regularly feature incredibly hard-to-find selections like itoyori (golden threadfin bream), mejina (opaleye), and a luxuriously rich fatty bonito. The uni deserves its own paragraph. Sea urchin can be a gamble at lesser restaurants, but here it is pristine. On any given night, you might be lucky enough to find both creamy California uni and the briny, delicate Hokkaido uni available for side-by-side comparison. Another testament to their traditional approach and culinary respect is how they utilize the week's fresh catch to craft a warm, incredibly tasty fish head soup. It is a deeply comforting, umami-rich broth that extracts every ounce of flavor from the premium seafood they bring in, showcasing a level of authenticity you rarely see anymore. While the menu does offer French-inspired dishes and various hot kitchen items, let me be clear: you are here for the sushi. The hot food isn't bad by any means, but if you truly want a culinary experience, do not waste precious stomach space on it. You are here for the raw fish. The singular exception to this rule is the pork gyoza--they are remarkably juicy and absolutely worth the order. Do not skip dessert. In many sushi restaurants, desserts are an afterthought, but here they are top-notch and entirely homemade. The Japanese flan is impossibly silky and decadent. However, the true star is the crème brûlée cheesecake--it is remarkably smooth, slicing effortlessly at the touch of a fork, with a deeply satisfying flavor profile that entirely avoids being overly sweet. I have to address the elephant in the neighborhood: this place absolutely destroys Morimoto down the street. Morimoto has become a tourist trap resting on a recognizable name, employing inexperienced chefs to cater to the sheep-like masses who prioritize a flashy dining room over authentic taste. If you actually understand and respect true sushi, you skip the theatrical nonsense down the street and come here. Let's also be brutally honest about the price point: excellence comes at a premium. This is an uncompromising, high-end culinary experience, and the bill reflects the quality of ingredients flown in from Japan. If you are a bargain hunter, looking for cheap eats, or aren't willing to pay for top-tier craftsmanship, save your time and look elsewhere. This establishment is for serious diners who understand the value of good sushi and aren't just looking for a good enough "AYCE" experience.
