Nice little sushi place with great prices. My husband and I both enjoyed our items which included the chicken yakitori, Beef Negimaki, vegetable roll, wasabi spicy tuna roll and regular spicy tuna roll. We also enjoyed the fresh complementary grapes at the end. Service was extra friendly and attentive! read more

Wasabi is a sushi restaurant in West Orange. The restaurant is small because it did a huge amount of take out during the pandemic so it reconfigured the space to have a larger foyer and fewer seats. If you eat in, you'll notice they still do a huge takeout business. I've used them for take-out and delivery, but eating is better. So, consider getting a reservation. You won't be disappointed. The sushi is as good as many of those that are highly on the various "best sushi lists". It is very good sushi. Plus the prices are moderate. And the presentation is attractive with flowers and small little bird statues on tiny baskets. A few real standouts: the Tuna Mango Tartar topped with a quail egg, which was fresh, light and tasty was actually the best I've ever had and I always order it. The miso soup, which comes with dinner, was light and flavorful. Even the tea was unusually good. The raw sushi dishes are very good, well presented and fresh. There's a variety of vegetarian and cooked sushi also well executed. Just remember if you are eating in, it's a small place. read more

Seriously fk this place. I ordered from their website so they wouldn't be stuck with extra fees and I paid dearly because any real delivery site would have dropped the hammer on this garbage behavior. 2 hours, 2 HOURS and I had to call to ask them where the order was. They asked me to wait 10 more minutes. 15 minutes later the driver sent me a picture of the food delivered to the wrong house. I called the restaurant, no remorse, no apologies. I said I have little kids that were waiting for hours to eat dinner and their response? Ok we'll throw it out. I hope I'm not the only customer you're going to lose because of this. Absolutely disgusting behavior. Throw it out? You should be ashamed of yourselves. read more

I have ordered from here many times and never left a review because the food was so appealing that I simply forgot. This time was different, which is why I am keeping it fair and scoring the way I am. I ordered shumai their Japanese dumplings with shrimp, Wasabi R which has tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and avocado inside and outside with 3 different tobiko. I also got the sashimi dinner (15 Pieces of assorted fish, with miso soup). The dumplings were nicely cooked and good. The sashimi was fresh with an assortment of various pieces of raw fish. I highly recommend it. The Wasabi R is where things got weird for me. The tobiko lacked taste, I guess it is for aesthetics more than anything. It was a very average roll. I would not order it again. They are always fast delivering so no points lost there. This time I was not blown away. I am assuming it was an off night. I normally order from here, when I can't get up the hill to Kim's. This place is good though. read more

Business review: I just called to order and heard they had a fire in the building! So sad to hear this. Waiting for a call back for information about how I can donate. We got takeout. The sushi was good for the price point. Fish felt fresh but the sushi rolls weren't wrapped properly. Half the pieces would open up from being picked up or the rice would fall off the seaweed. But we did appreciate the ratio to rice to filling. They gave us a salad with our order which was nice. Decent spot for sushi craving without breaking the bank and no frills. read more

This is based on my take out experience. I will come back to dine inside so May 5 stars is in their future. I ordered take out and came to the restaurant to order. During my wait for the food I was able to make some observations. Nice street side set up for outside dining. They are very clean and prepared for COVID as best they can. All the staff were wearing masks, the tables appeared socially distant, inside they have nice decor and lighting including lighting in the menus. Nice touch! They have a Buddha that greats you as you walk past the bar into the dining room. Further down on the left is a Sushi bar. They appear to have a good selection of food and drinks. The manager/ hostess was extremely accommodating while waiting for my take out order, offering bottled water and a seat on a very comfortable couch. She greeted some regulars by first name and was very cordial. I ordered shrimp with pineapple which was delicious. They gave me edamame on the house which was very nice. I said I was visiting friends who live in New City and said I would take a ride from Brooklyn to eat here because they were so nice. Based on this simple first interaction and vibe I'm the restaurant I would say they look like a good choice. I will update my review after my next visit. read more

Finally tried this little place and was pleasantly surprised! The tofu teriyaki dinner box was very good and came with lots of extras for a good price. Just vegetarians be mindful that my tofu & veggies came with shrimp shumai and a california roll (imitation crab) which wasn't listed on the menu. I ordered to go and my food was ready pretty fast. I would probably only order to go from here since it was VERY small on the inside, only like two tables. But will definitely order from here again. read more

First off, there's parking the back which is super helpful since it's such a busy street. When we first walked in I thought it was take out only. There was only a few chairs by the sushi bar and two small tables. We were seated quickly though. The staff was friendly and attentive. We started with edamame. Came out super hot and salted perfectly. Went with the shumai too and almost wish we didn't. It definitely was not my favorite part of the meal, skip that for sure. The sushi was fantastic though! Definitely stole the show. We went with a spicy crab roll, shrimp tempura, soft shell crab and I believe a pink lady roll. Huge pieces in each roll. Rice was perfect, the fish was fresh and plentiful too. The presentation was also beautiful. The wasabi was powerful and fresh. I can definitely see myself coming back and just grabbing some takeout. While this place is small it still has some nice ambience to it. It's quaint and decorated and you have a full view of the chefs making sushi. Overall it's a great find! read more

Saturday night take out and wanting to try something new this was what was decided on. For one my main concern with take out is that it won't be hot when in make the fairly short trip back home to eat it that wasn't the case here. Everything was sealed tight and good and hot. So with plenty to choose from I picked the the jumbo shrimp meal. They didn't skimp on the shrimp which is a peeve of mine when ordering similar entrees but what went wrong is that it was way waaaay too many onions in it, and they were only cooked a little bit. So it wasn't the worst thing and the sauces that came with the meal were good but it was too oniony for me and at nearly $20 that was quite high. The food itself was good. I ordered the food right here through the yelp app and it was very smooth, food was bagged and ready 20 min. After ordering which is a good look. read more

I ordered two shrimp tempura and one California roll. The rolls were bigger than usual, but a bit sloppy. The wasabi wasn't properly separated so a couple pieces had strong wasabi flavor. Overall, it was decent sushi. It satisfied my craving, but it's not some place I would go unless I was in the area again read more

I spend a lot of time in West Orange and I was pleasantly surprised to see on Yelp that another sushi joint opened up in this town. I always try to support the local businesses here. I've been trying to get to try out Wasabi Sushi and today was the day. I like that it is more intimate and smaller than most other sushi places (it's actually very small). Some places give you free hot tea, some charge three dollars per person for hot tea: here they charge $1 for unlimited hot tea which I think is a good thing. And the tuna/avocado, yellowtail/scallion, tuna/cucumber & avocado/cucumber rolls. All good. The yellowtail roll was a little chewy though. Pros: 1) Good service. 2) They have a very convenient parking lot in the back. I feel that the rolls were reasonably priced for what we received. Cons: The flatscreen TV on the wall looks more like an iPad - maybe they could put a bigger TV on the wall. I also wish they were open a little bit earlier so they could offer lunch delivery a little before 11 am. Also, maybe they should get sugar packets here instead of the little bowl of sugar. I plan on trying the Udon noodle soup next. read more

Been coming here for years. They are welcoming and service is great. They have some of the freshest fish you can find. Affordable prices too

This place has no contact pickup and ordering which is great during this COVID time. I placed an order at the place for shrimp tempura roll, fire cracker roll and crazy rock shrimp roll. I got my order within exactly 10 minutes. Everything was very tasty and fresh! I'm very impressed with the quality and service; will definitely be reordering. read more

Typical make shift sushi. Nothing spectacular from what I've tasted. Nothing on the menu genuinely screamed out to me deliciousness. I got two specialty rolls, Blue crab fantastic roll (Marinated blue crab with chef's spicy creamy sauce, in- side with BBQ eel and avocado) and phoenix roll (Shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado and lobster salad). Aside from that a tradition shrimp tempura roll. The Phoenix roll was dry, the lobster salad left much to be desired and it just didn't meld together as well as it could have. The blue crab fantastic roll was straight up disappointment. I was excited for this roll based on the description and it let me down. It was not creamy and matter of fact quite bland which for me was really impossible with what was listed as the description. Delivery was a long wait. I really would like to fan stan for this place. Seriously. I miss great sushi, like where i used to get it from in NYC. I have been on the hunt to find a new spot to venture into and order special rolls, apps and what not. I would try again in fear they were having an off day. read more

When I first walked in, I was asked if I was "dining in or take out". I was taken back by that type of greeting. The place is small maybe that's why. It's possible this place is known for take out and majority of the customers dine-out. A simple hi how may I help you would have been nice. They were quick with the service, however, we were the only ones eating indoors and not takeout. They came to the table at least 4 times ready to take my order, which is all good. Karen eventually told me to call her over when I was ready to place my order. For my appetizer, I ordered the scallop buttered yaki. I was in heaven, I love scallops and the teriyaki sauce added to it made this dish even more tasteful. I was satisfied. I ordered three different rolls. The first one was volcano roll, this had crab meat on top very flavorful. Second, I had the madness roll, very yummy, salmon on top of the spicy tuna had me wanting to order another. I highly recommend getting these two rolls. However, I was a bit disappointed with the third roll, the Amazing roll. I specifically asked for this roll because it had mango in it. When I got the spicy tuna roll, the mango wasn't inside the roll, but rather laid on top. I don't know if mango are in season or not, but the mango did not taste like mango at all. I wouldn't recommend that roll. The Amazing roll was similar to a simple spicy tuna roll, I was better off ordering a regular roll for half the price. They do have dessert, which wasn't on the menu. They had deep fried ice cream, but ended up ordering the green tea mochi ice cream, my favorite thing in the whole world. That was my favorite item. For your first time here, if it's not busy, I advise you sit at the sushi bar. I sat by the window near the front entrance it was a bit cold. Truly disappointed, if I could give ZERO stars I would,,, I ordered delivery, I get a call from the delivery driver to come get my food, I said "I did not ask for pick up", he said "no, I outside for delivery", I said, please use the call box I will buzz you in so you can deliver to my door (I prepaid a $7 tip on a $36 order)",,, he said "okay", brings the food to my door with an attitude, I thanked him and he says to me no more, no more,,, I said, "what do you mean no more", he walks off speaking in his language loudly,,, so I decide to call the restaurant to share my experience with their delivery driver in hopes to aid them to deal with the situation appropriately so none else will have this type of situation,,, How did that go??? LOL The employee apologizes and tells me the delivery driver was the owner,,, so I kindly Grubhub called to have the tip reversed and that was that... Now onto the food; I ordered Spicy Scallop Roll, Firecracker Roll & Crazy Roll,,, let me just nicely share, if you have never had sushi before, you can call their sushi okay tasted like prepackaged bought from grocery store,,, but if you have DO NOT order from here, you will not be impressed AT ALL... ( taste no scallops nor was not spicy, nothing fresh or crunchy about the firecracker roll and the crazy roll was just that crazy, no crunch, if that was tuna I'd be surprised nor was it spicy) Overall bad experience, places like this do not deserve to be open treating paying customers as such,,, I will not use this establishment again... read more

I only ordered delivery from this restaurant. The food was always fresh and delivered under an hour. Orders were always filled accurately and arrived carefully placed and separated in containers. They give enough soy spice and chop sticks also which tends to be an issue with some restaurants. I'm sure I'll be dining in here soon. It's also BYOB. read more

Went for Tuesday-Saturday Lunch Special Food - 5/5. The miso soup is mellow with nice cubes of tofu inside. Spicy white tuna had good flavor and lots of crunch for texture. The wasabi roll had a good balance of fish and avocado with the tobiko adding color. Good sushi. Service - 4/5. Friendly and courteous. Sushi came out quickly. Value - 5/5. The wasabi combo is unique in that it offers special rolls as part of the lunch which normally would run you average $12 a roll but you can try it guilt free here along with a regular roll and some soup. Lunch specials run on Saturdays too! Great deal. Parking - Street (Free) read more

All good things must come to an end. I was a regular for the HOT STONE ANGUS STEAK at $28. But, no more as the meat was tough, had very fatty ends on it and the dipping sauce was thin. I'm not a big sushi fan. Don't get me wrong, I'll eat it but it's not my first, second or even 5th choice. (Italian, anyone?) We order from this place a lot. We discovered it by chance about a year ago and it's been really great food every time. We always order through DoorDash but after speaking to a friend tonight about how much commission is taken from these small businesses I decided to go ahead and call to see if they could deliver themselves. We have two young kids so picking up isn't convenient. They said they usually only deliver locally (West Orange) but since it wasn't busy (4pm), they would do the delivery (we usually order at this time because of the kids' dinner schedule.) Great! We both skip the middle person. Took a little longer than it would on DD but that wasn't a problem. The other thing I need to mention is they're pretty honest. I somehow managed to give an extra $100 meaning $120 tip instead of $20 (food was $85). I didn't realise until after dinner. We usually order $150+ of food so it didn't feel too expensive giving $200+. But as I was clearing dishes I realised I didn't order as much this time and mentally went through the math. I called the restaurant and they checked with the driver and indeed I had given her extra. I was told the driver would bring it back after her next delivery but since it was my mistake I didn't want her coming back out. I asked if I could have it on my account as credit for next time in which they agreed. Great food and great customer service. Definitely recommend. read more

Exceptionally good sushi at a fair price as well. We order for delivery through doordash often and they are always top notch. Decided to try a new sushi spot since our usual place is closed on Tuesdays. We ordered Wasabi Sushi through UberEats and it came quickly and was really good. Overall I will definitely be ordering from here again! read more

I ordered the tofu teriyaki. It wasn't that great, but it was tolerable. I ended up taking most of the meal home to eat later. Prayed it would be amazing because being able to walk to a good sushi spot from my home is the stuff dreams are made of! I got super basics to go: spicy tuna, yellowtail and shrimp tempura rolls. I needed to top off the one slice of pizza I had from a kid birthday party but it needed to be quick cuz... my kids were sugar crashing from said birthday party. Also, since it was my first time trying Wasabi Sushi I wanted to judge quality simply from the fish and roll. I'm no sushi connoisseur, for sure. But I felt like flavor wise they didn't have it and my rolls fell apart. Could be the take out factor. Could be cuz it was busy. I'll prob still go there in a pinch. But I prefer the flavor at Kim's up the hill. Or even, the sushi at Brookdale Shoprite (don't knock it til you try it!). read more

This place is our go-to spot to get delivery from for sushi. My husband always finds ordering delivery sushi weird (I dont) - and because we both love it and are lazy, delivery became a sure thing. We've ordered from Wasabi a few times, and every time, the rolls are tightly prepared, the sushi is fresh, and only one piece out of everything I've eaten had a bit of stringy sinew - which, you know is really difficult to avoid when you're dealing with tons of fresh fish. We haven't explored the menu other than combos of rolls and nigiri, but everything we have opted for has been very delicious. A treat indeed! read more

I'm pretty sure my kitchen may be bigger than this entire restaurant but I can tell you without question that the sushi, sashimi and other Japanese favorites they are making here are way better than anything you will ever get from me! Given the almost steady stream of 5-star reviews recently, I had to give this new place a shot. When I say it's small, I can't stress that enough. There are like 5 or 6 tables, total. It doesn't offer much by way of ambiance either, so I'm thinking this place is going to focus on take-out business (which is what I did). The order was prepared quickly (in about 15 mins), the staff were very friendly and the pricing was competitive. We got an order of shumai, the kani salad, sushi/sashimi combo (comes with miso soup) and an extra miso soup. The shumai and soup were standard but the kani salad was very good. Generous portion of crab and very finely julienned cucumber strips which blended perfectly with the crab strands. The combo dinner came with 15 pieces consisting of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and either flounder or bass (not sure). The sashimi pieces were huge and all of the fish was very fresh, clean and prepared/presented nicely. I mistakenly thought the combo also came with a roll, so I will make sure to try some of those next time. The total came to $34 for all of that. I really wish I lived within their delivery zone, but the 15 min drive is worth it for the quality of fish they're pumping out here, not to mention the good value. I'm not completely abandoning my local spots in favor of this place just yet, but other local sushi purveyors should consider themselves on notice. There's a new gang in town and they are not messing around! I would definitely recommend checking them out if you're around the way. read more

Worst sushi I've had in a long time. For $25 on Uber eats delivery I'm pretty upset! The Samurai roll, no idea what kind of mystery meat was deep fried and my Alaska roll, where was the salmon?? The spicy Mayo was sweet, how's that possible? Such a waste! read more

Love this place! I always order from them and, with being able to have them deliver, it has only enabled my sushi addiction. This place is definitely the number 1 spot in West Orange for sushi. The Jade Roll has to be my top favorite! All their rolls are good though - it's definitely worth a try, you won't be disappointed! Sometimes delivery may take a while (one time it took about an hour) but, when you're at work with nothing better to eat, it doesn't seem like such a big deal.
