Great value, great service, great food. Quiet and pleasant ambiance. This is our favorite sushi place in the area.

I very rarely eat in person dining here, no particular reason why , I just seem to order takeout with them the majority of the time. I have eaten in house though. Food is always consistently good. Always hot when I get home. Never once have they made a mistake on my order. One time I went to order via DoorDash for delivery and the restaurant actually called me because ordering through DoorDash was twice the price as ordering direct with them. Ocha has been around for a long time, and even though it's relatively close-by I've never been there. Recently though I came across a Groupon deal I couldn't pass up, so I decided to give them a try. I was glad I did. I was initially skeptical when I got there because it was almost 6pm and the restaurant was completely empty, but within 30 minutes almost every booth was filled. The service was beyond friendly. They even pointed out that we could order more because we still had money left on the coupon we purchased; something we didn't realize. A couple of the stand-out items we ordered included the Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice, the Shrimp Tempura Roll and the Sweet Potato Tempura Roll. We really liked that the tempura in the rolls was fried to order. There's nothing worse than greasy, cold tempura that was made earlier in bulk (something too many sushi bars do). The parking is a bit tough since it's strictly street parking and there are several other restaurants located nearby, but if you're willing to loop the block once or twice Ocha is definitely worth trying. read more

We had a Groupon for this restaurant and decided to use it tonight. We made reservations for 7pm(LOL), the place was pretty much empty except for the two tables of patrons, the 3 sushi makers and a waitress. A few take out orders were picked up while we were there. Hearing good reviews on the Ocha roll that was my first choice as well as a cucumber with shrimp roll. I also ordered the House special Miso soup. The Ocha roll was a bit disappointing to me as it was bland tasting and not a bit spicy at all! The spicy tuna just wasn't. The cucumber shrimp roll was plain but it was fresh and delightfully crunchy. It was a bit confusing ordering this simple roll. I was charged for a NoratiThe House special miso soup had a few tiny bits of tofu, sliced white mushrooms, seaweed pieces, and served with a side dish of crunchies. In some places this would be the regular miso. My roomie ordered the banana and cucumber roll as well as the sweet potato tempura roll. She enjoyed them, I tried the banana /cucumber roll and it was unremarkable tasting. Our bill was incorrect but quickly corrected. I haven't been to Ocha in at least a year and I won't be back anytime soon. We popped in at 7:30 on a rainy summer Thursday evening. The place was empty. They must do a solid take out business because the three sushi chefs at the counter were quite busy and orders seemed to keep coming out. We asked for a table for 2 and the waitress basically motioned that we could sit at a particular booth. She didn't bother to check if it was cleaned and the table was not wiped down well at all... it had a greasy streaky film as if they didn't fully finish cleaning it from other diners just prior. The server looked like she would rather be anywhere else but here. She was not friendly and it was really a bit off putting. We ordered the Uzuzikuri and kanpachi with Serrano chili. The sashimi appetizers were fine, but the Temperature of the fish was room temp and I really think sashimi should be just slightly cool to the touch. We both ordered a hand roll and were shocked at what we got. There was virtually no fish such little rice and a few tempura crunches but it was so empty it was actually shocking. A mediocre handroll usually has more rice than fish but these little seaweed wraps basically contained nothing! Our naruto roll was fine... and the sashimi (chu toro and yellowtail) were virtually tasteless. The sweet ebi didn't seem all that fresh and they were out of the live scallop. We had ordered thinking initially we might get more pieces after the first wave of food arrived, but we left hungry and decided it was not worth it. This place has really gone downhill. Back to good ole Nikko in whippany where we are never disappointed. There's nothing else like it around. read more

Right off the bat, this place has fantastic selection for fun sushi rolls. They have over two pages of just specialty rolls. They are fusion too so they have Thai and some noodle dishes. Really great menu selection. We stuck with sushi and it was great, everything was really really fresh. The interior is nice and they definitely didn't rush us out. It was nice cause it turned into a long dinner but if you're looking for something quick you might have to flag the server a few times. I don't mind a leisure dinner though. My first time here. I had a sweet potato tempura roll and a banana cucumber roll. The sweet potato tempura roll was good. The banana cucumber roll was something I never heard of before and it was very good! Check your receipts because they didn't charge us correctly on something my guest had. Nice atmosphere but not the best sushi I've ever had! The sushi is good, but it's just regular. Nothing special it extra tasty. Service is ok. When they first opened (it's one of those reviews), they offered some of the best sushi/sashimi in the area. However, as of 2020, they've changed their focused to the Thai/Chinese dishes, and the sushi/sashimi quality has suffered considerable. Most of my sashimi arrives with slices that aren't even cut all of the way through. Additionally, they are frequently chewy, sinewy; just not high quality cuts. The cooked dishes are fine, but not distinguished from other Chinese joints. It's a shame, but I've tried them several times over 2020 and the results were the same. read more

I am very sorry to say that Ocha Asian-Japanese Cuisine in Caldwell, NJ - fell Far Short of our expectations from trying to find a free OR metered parking space, Anywhere within Two blocks, to their Not shoveling a simple Two foot path to enter their restaurant to our entering the restaurant to an Empty hostess stand (we were Never greeted and waited to be seated for several minutes) to our "waitress" trying to clear our plates, without asking if we were done, while we Still had food on them! To start, we received 2 glasses of water with Desiccated, Incredibly Slimy and Wilted lemons! - One was replaced after a couple of minutes. Then, 1 of our appetizers of Calamari for $7.95, were 10 (TEN) thin, small, rubbery, overcooked pieces served with some kind of inappropriate/non-complimenting, weird tasting Tomato like sauce. A Completely unacceptable portion for what would have been a fair price! Before we ordered, we asked if we could have some spicy mayo or Eel sauce instead, but we were told there would be a charge, Really? We have been dining out almost daily, across the Tri-State area, for Decades and have Never been charged for our 1st. condiment! Came with some friends based on the recommendation and I was not impressed. We ordered a sushi pizza, soups, sashimi love boat, a couple of rolls and some sushi ala carte. The quality of the sushi was not the best. Some of the sashimi was frozen in the middle which is terrible. The soups were lukewarm and lacking in flavor, the rolls were underwhelming and also did not have much flavor. About the only items I enjoyed were the sushi pizza and my ikura and uni sushi. The service was very spotty, we constantly had to flag someone done but oddly they were trying to remove plates that were not even finished. There was also a pretty obvious language issue with our server as she did not understand some of our requests which lead to us getting items on the sashimi order that we did not want. A very solid sushi offering here on Bloomfield. The sushi itself here is very good, but not spectacular. Where Ocha really scores points for me is the value for what you get here. The 3 roll lunch combo with soup and salad for $10.95 feels like highway robbery, and I love the option to add 3 pieces of sushi for $6 more. Great experience at Ocha this evening. With the exception of Tomo's in E. Hanover, which is a different kind of sushi experience anyway, Ocha is as good, if not better than any sushi in the area. AMBIANCE - The restaurant is sleek, almost club-like. The crowd (6 PM on a Saturday) was mainly families and couples. The restaurant was at least half full (a good thing for this early in the evening). SERVICE - Attentive and prompt. We didn't want for anything; from our water glasses remaining full, to bringing out all dishes in a well-paced manner, the service was spot on. Am I the only one that notices that when dining at a sushi restaurant, you rarely have an "assigned" server and, instead, whoever is nearest helps you? Kind of a weird sushi restaurant quirk (just sayin'). FOOD - We ordered the following: Green Salad with Carrot/Ginger Dressing - Very good. Different than your average ginger dressing, mainly due to the (pleasant) sweetness added by the carrot. Sushi Pizza (spicy tuna) - This was delicious. Just enough spice to give it a nice kick and served on what I believe was a crunchy scallion pancake. Was enough to share between two people (4 total pieces). Monster Roll - The tempura banana in this roll intrigued us and, while it was good, we probably would go for something else next time. Spicy Girl Roll - This was great. The spicy salmon with this crunchiness of the tobiko flakes worked perfectly. Would definitely order this again. Alaska Roll - As good or better than anywhere else in the area. Sushi (yellowtail and scallop) - Extremely fresh and the rice was perfect. I would order more sushi/sashimi next time. Ocha is a winner and I will absolutely return. Came here for dinner a few months ago with my family and the experience was about as hostile as it can get. We told the waitress who greeted us that there was a party of 7 of us and she said "ugh, 7 of you?". Not off to a great start, but we ignored the rude "welcome" because we were hungry and know the food is good. She then proceeds to thump the menus down and walk away. When we went to pay, there was an issue with us using our Groupon. The manager was unfriendly and did not want to help us redeem it. Service did not feel very welcoming- stepped into Ocha and waited a good five minutes for waitstaff to approach us and seat us. Loved the eel and avocado roll, and the beef maki- it was cooked perfectly, juicy, and well seasoned. The salad dressing was also nicely balanced. Ocha is by far my favorite sushi restaurant in all of New Jersey. I grew up in New Jersey and I am still there quite often, and Ocha is always a restaurant I want to go to/do go to. A few years ago, Ocha redid the inside of it and the inside of Ocha is now amazing. It feels like you are at a club with the lighting, but Ocha is not loud nor not family friend like a club is. So Ocha feels like a club, but has the vibe of a family friendly restaurant, which is great! Whenever I come here, I always get the tuna sushi pizza to start and then I get a rainbow roll with miso soup and a salad with the orange dressing or a seaweed salad. I love my order so much here, that I just always have to get it. But there are tons of other good things to eat at Ocha besides what I get! The staff here are all super nice! Came here with my boyfriend the other night to have a special night out. We had been walking around all day and decided to get a 4:30pm dinner at Ocha. Upon entering we were seated and given drinks right away. Appetizers - my boyfriend and I split a sushi pizza and the field green salad with carrot ginger dressing. Both were good. The sushi pizza was a bit spicy but still tolerable by those of us that prefer mild spiciness. Dinner - we decided to get the ocha roll, the happy together roll, the hawaii roll, and the black dragon roll. All were fresh and tasted delicious, but if I had to rank them in order of favorite to least favorite, it would be as follows: black dragon roll, hawaii roll, happy together roll, and then the ocha roll. Wow, so much food. We weren't able to finish it all so we got most of it to-go and finished it the following day. While the prices are almost double what they are at Nori's across the street, the sushi here is almost double in size and much more fresh. The place was relatively empty but it took a few minutes longer to get my food than it should have. Miso soup, good. Salad good, but drenched with Japanese dressing. The combo incl a Cali roll which was good and a piece of salmon , while slightly overcooked, was delicious. I had the Teriyaki sauce, which was good. I was in and out in less than 40 min, eating slowly.. The staff was courteous and clean. One gripe- I found the place here on Yelp and there is a "coupon" (actually not a coupon, per se, but a mention..) on the yelp page that says "if you mention yelp, you will receive 10% off". I mentioned this and the waitress looked confused. I showed her the Ad/yelp page to confirm the deal and she was still noncommittal. In the end, despite the fact that I made it clear that I intended to leave a yelp review, I did NOT receive the 10% discount. If you are hoping for it, my advice would be not to hold your breath. Very good food and service, but way too rushed. Went for dinner last night. Had a 7 o'clock reservation. Decided to go for a couple of drinks first at the Cloverleaf next door, so we were about 10 minutes late. From seating to exit was under 30 minutes. We ordered a couple of salads, some shumai, 3 rolls and a few pieces. When we were seated, we asked for water and green tea. It arrived in about 20 seconds. We took a few minutes to peruse the menu before ordering. Our salads arrived in about 2 minutes, followed quickly by the shumai. No sooner had I taken my last bite of shumai, were my plates cleared followed by the immediate delivery of my sushi main. We ate, our check was brought, and we were out the door. As for the food, the rolls are quite creative and fun, and the fish itself is very fresh and tasty. Everything was properly prepared, there simply wasn't any sense of pace between courses, as it felt like a sprint. In hindsight, were I to go again, I'd probably order some apps then only order mains after I had finished. read more
