It came out sashimi, then they had to correct my order. Now I won't describe how it came out. You will have to check out the picture yourself. Trust me, it will be the cutest Tamago sushi ever. And now the highlight of the night, the infamous "Baked Alaska Roll" which costs $16, so a Premium Roll right? Wrong! Check the picture below! Umai is an adorable sushi spot across Lit Boutique! Inside, it reminds you of just sitting in someone's home. The kitchen is set up as if it's an apartment. The prices are pretty unbeatable. I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap everything was. My friend and I ordered edamame. It was about 1.5 cups worth. Then, we ordered wine. I tried to be adventurous, and I ordered plum wine which was a little too sweet for me. My friend just had Pinot Grigio. The beers are about $5 or so! I had the Baked Alaska roll, and it was delicious! My friend had the New England roll, and she said it was also pretty good. The rolls come in 8 pieces. Mine was about $14 or so. What I really enjoyed was how the sushi came prepared glowing! That was pretty fun! Overall, I had a good experience at Umai. This is your typical, go to, neat/quaint little bento sushi restaurant where you can order combos, for example you can mix and match things like sushi rolls, rice dishes (eg katsu), salad or miso soup, rice etc. I personally like this place because it's always pretty quiet and somewhat empty the times I've gone (personal preference for me because it makes it much easier to talk and converse). It is also clean whenever I go, and also I really like the window seats where you can watch people. Also -- the prices cannot be beat! The food you get here is good in terms of position and decent in terms of quality (I wouldn't say it's the best sushi out there but it's still pretty good to me), and the service is really good (all times I've gone the servers have been friendly and always give good recommendations). They also have a good selection of Japanese beer and sake which is nice. All decently priced and budget friendly. read more

No complaints there, it comes with 2 pieces of eel, rice, your choice of maki, and some tempura. While eating the light above us kept flicking on brighter and dimmer, which was slightly annoying. My friend found a piece of hair in her salmon sashimi, which could've been avoided if they had checked before serving it. The food was alright, but what really got me was the smell that you leave with after eating a meal here. I really enjoyed my experience dining here with the exception of one mishap. My friend and I ordered the Dinner Sets which were a great value! It certainly filled me up and tasted great. The interior was small but cute as well as we sat by the windows. We used an app called Allset so before we arrived we had already paid for our dinner and tipped as well, unfortunately we didn't see the waitress throughout dinner once we were served, so never got a refill of water until we were leaving. In addition the reason for my rating is because initially my friend started with a glass of cola, but after being informed refills for soda were not allowed we asked for a cup of water; unpredictably, instead of pouring water into a clean glass, our waitress poured water into the cup of soda... I was baffled why our waitress didn't pour it into a new glass. I didn't want to make a scene so left and got water from the car instead. It was like a joke YouTube video or something. Tuna in the "spicy" "tuna" roll was grey, and the sauce was basically ketchup. Also, raw rice -- as in tooth-breakingly crunchy -- in the gyu don (beef with onion bowl). Bad service -- beer took 10 minutes to come, with a dirty glass, and only one water for a table of two. This place is certainly a couple notches up from your supermarket and AYCE sushi but it won't compare to the upscale 4-5 star sushi joints. For what it was, prices aren't bad, service is quick and the menu selections are sufficient. They even offer designer rolls named after certain hot spots in Back Bay (e.g., The Prudential, Back Bay, Newbury etc) On our particular visit, we went with the Sashimi Deluxe, the Prudential maki and the New England maki. Sushi was fresh with great assortment and decent presentation but I probably wouldn't rush right back until I've at least tried a couple more sushi places in the same neighborhood. read more

We ordered a variety of nigiri and sushi. I also got Boneless Fried Chicken Dinner Plate, because I wanted to overindulge. Was slightly disappointed since I imagine it would taste like Cafe Mami's Tatsuta based on the description. Overall it was slightly salty and could have really benefited from a touch of acid or a typical mayo sauce. Adore my saba. But then I don't think I can dislike a piece of mackerel. Wanted to be fancy I got Uni. I feel depressed since I'm not sure if I don't like Uni in general or I had bad Uni. I was sorely disappointed. But I don't want to be like hey their uni sucks because I only had it twice now. Please let me know your #1 place for good uni please I don't want to deprive myself of uni thinking I don't like it. NOTHING ELSE. i think i'll stick to american lounges for tartares from now on.... Volcano Maki $12.95- the bf liked it..but i felt it was just "meh" Red sox maki $11.95- this one was okay..but no "wow" factor, prob the best thing i ordered tonight (and the sushi presentation, if you look at each piece, it's not cut perfectly, it resembled something you would make at home...with rice falling off...and a odd oval shape...) Salmon don $14.95- it's just white rice with a lot of raw salmon pieces on top..and they give you this weird soy sauce...And the salmon aint fresh...nope..not fresh at all... Okay, so i asked for extra spicy mayo sauce, and extra eel sauce. They bring it to you in a tiny holder..and these jerks don't tell you there's a charge! UMMM, you're suppose to tell me when i ask, i've never been charged for extra sauce before. And it's not cheap, it's 1.25 per sauce. Yeah- rip off anyone? And there's no asians that eat here.
