We were a group of 3 who came here for my mothers birthday. On the reservation I noted that we were celebrating my moms birthday. When we arrived at the host we were immediately seated and she wished my mom a happy birthday which I thought was very nice that she made noted to do so. Restaurant is very sleek and modern looking. They played great music and the art decor was pretty cool. I noticed on the menu that they specialized the menu for my mom and put Happy birthday on it for her and I knew right there I was gonna be blown away. I really appreciated the little things the restaurant did and the staff. Our waiter I believe his name was Craig () was awesome. Very attentive, knowledgeable and really enhanced our dining experience. The whole staff was amazing really. Good was amazing, we wanted to try everything but our stomachs wouldn't allow it lol. We had the oysters, pate, and tartare, dinner was fried chicken, brick chicken, and swordfish. We all shared and everything was truly delicious, especially the fried chicken. What a crunch! And the side sauces and biscuits, chef kiss! Dessert was amazing too and they brought it out with a candle. Great food and great service. Went for my anniversary dinner and the menu was personalized. Such a nice touch :) Had the chicken and dumplings. Delicious. Hubby had the Berkshire pork, which he loved. Oysters were great. Going to look for more "savage blondes". The chicken liver mousse was the best I've had and the waiter, Ben, said that's the one dish that they never take off the menu. We tried all four desserts on the menu. Order of preference: maple pot de creme, doughnuts, olive oil cake, chocolate peanut butter pie. All taste good!! Really cute place. I've heard the fried chicken is The Thing To Get, but I believe it has to be pre-ordered for the table because it is not on the menu. Burrata and grilled peaches was fine....but it's just burrata and a few peach slices that didn't really taste of any grilling. Go to any restaurant lately, you'll find the same thing on the menu. The onion soubise (like a jam) it came with was amazing, though. Focaccia - chef's kiss. Spectacular. Order it and don't look back. Also ordered the daily Berkshire pork special, which today was the 10 oz pork chop with polenta and the green beans. The polenta are more grits than polenta, which were fine by me but some may not like the grittier texture - I did and they were delicious, just know before you go). The beans were not my favorite - kind of tasteless and a few were stringy. The pork was delicious but literally half of the portion was fat. Everything (other than the focaccia) was underseasoned, nothing a little s/p couldn't help, but still..... Overall: good, not great. With SOOOO many fantastic restaurants in the area, I'm not in any rush to go back. But if I do, I'm definitely getting the chicken! read more

I was greeted the minute I walked in the door and the hostess came right up to find us a table. I like that there are multiple waiters/ waitresses and they all introduced themselves when they came to the table. They start you off with complimentary still or sparkling water. I'm a big fan of sparkling and loved this added touch. The menu is small but still many different options. Their main focus is in pork. The special tonight was a pork chop. We started with the mixed greens salad, focaccia bread and burrata. Bread was just ok but the salads were good. Both were very fresh. For dinner we tried the pork chop, roasted chicken and pappardelle with pork shoulder. The chicken was cut off the bone and laid over a bed of vegetables. The pappardelle was in a delicious, light, meat sauce. The meet was slow roasted melted in your mouth. For dessert we tried the peanut butter tart and donuts. Both were good but did not wow us. There were three desserts on the menu all were $9. The space is nice and welcoming- byob. Got a bit busy so I would deff make reservations if dining after 7pm. Now as I mentioned earlier the salads were fresh. So fresh in fact we found a caterpillar on our salad plate. Now I can understand when serving organic salads and vegetables that this can happen. We told our waiter and he was very apologetic. Then came, who I assume was the manger to apologize, but neither offered to remove it from the bill. I feel I give very fair and diplomatic reviews. The restaurant started out with four stars. However, this review will only receive one star because the manager was very rude. Anyway, we had a 5 o'clock dinner reservation this past Saturday evening. We arrived on time and seated right away. In fact, we were the first customers in the restaurant. The restaurant filled up quite quickly. The restaurant is a BYOB. Kimberly was our delightful server. For a starter, we shared a Simple Salad. It was okay and nothing outstanding. My friend ordered a half roasted chicken which came with mushrooms. I had a taste of this dish. It was very good. My entree was the Atlantic Halibut which was very good. However, it didn't have enough sauce. Anyway, we finished our entrées. As soon as the dishes were cleared away, we were immediately shown the dessert menu. We ordered the Brown Sugar Pound Cake with Blueberry Compote and Bourbon Brûlée. Not even a minute went by after ordering, the dessert arrived along with the check. We paid the check with a very good tip even before we finished dessert. The dessert was phenomenal! It tasted very rich with eggs. Anyway, we finished the dessert. I got up to use the restroom. When I came back, I waited at the table while my other party used the restroom. While, I was waiting, the manager came directly over at me and stated nastily, "Would you move over to the bar area. I have a 6:30 reservation waiting!". I was totally stunned. My other party return to the table. The manager came back. I stated to her, "You wouldn't have spoken to me like that if I were a man. You were rude." The manager started apologizing profusely. ***I would just like to say, We didn't dawdle before, during or after the meal (or do anything) for the manager to even come over with an attitude to rush us out. read more

The service started off good, the food wasn't bad. The beef tartar was excellent. Here's my issue, they book reservations one on top of the other and although I understand the business model, the service fell apart there. Instead of telling us the next party was there and they needed the table. They started reaching over me, grabbing plates, took my husband's dessert he was still working on and just completely violated my personal space. About 4 different ppl came to the table removing dishes within a 5 minute period. All reaching over me because I was at the edge, finally we asked if they needed the table because it was odd behavior and they said yes. Next time, just let people know instead of being passive aggressive. We could have taken our desert to go. read more

My steak frites - truly medium rare as requested - was perfect - as were my wife's mussels in white wine. Our second visit to Tutle and Wolf was somewhat not as stellar as the first. Overall, the dining room appeared dark, dingy, and not that inviting. Rows of small, lit candles failed to diminish the gloomy interior. Frankly, I wanted this to be a memorable occasion as it was during our first visit yet I could tell early on that it was not to be. Although we were the very first guests to arrive, we were seated directly at the front door. Other than a bottle of tap water, our bare wooden table did not do much to warm up the vibe. The lack of place mats was quite noticeable. I had been taught never to place soiled utencils onto the table yet I had no other place to put them during our meal. Our server approached yet, at first glance, appeared to be someone who walked in from the street to pick up a Take-Out order. The attire was totally inconsistent with the other staff members, quite worn, torn and tattered. This, unto itself, simply added to the negative vibe. Our Apps and Mains were lacking in substance and flavour as well as the size of the flatware which did not appear to be similar to that which is shown on the website. This can also be said for photos of their dinner sampling. Loud music was blaring from the overhead speakers which added to my annoyance. (I did very much want to award this restaurants more stars yet I could not get past it's "dark and gloomy" interior.) Food: Our portions were meager in size and our plates did not resemble that which is shown on the website. We did request two orders of their donuts and could not wait to get them home to enjoy with a cup of fresh coffee. This is sad to say, but the donuts were probably the most enjoyable part of the evening, regardless of the fact that we ate them at home. It is doubtful that a third visit to Turtle & Wolf will be made any time soon. read more

Very nice restaurant in Upper Montclair which if you were driving bye you might miss. Saw some good reviews and decided to try it. It's a long, narrow restaurant with an open kitchen which was pretty cool. The hostess was very nice and I would recommend reservations because it's pretty busy. Appetizers were the pecorino arancini, green salad, and rosemary focaccia....all were very good, the rosemary focaccia was really good. Dinner was the hand cut papardelle with pork shoulder and the red wine braised short rib.....again both were very good, the papardelle pasta was outstanding. Ordered the crispy potatoes as a side who he were really good. For dessert was the maple pot au creme and the pound cake......the pot au creme was ok...... it the pound cake was great.....caremelized sugar glaze made it. Service was outstanding......very attentive and pleasant. The decor was cool too......I am definitely not an art fanatic but actually liked the paintings and drawings. Easily one of the most creative and delicious meals of 2018. Outstanding decor, ambiance and service. Turtle + the Wolf is BYOB, but there's a wine store directly across the street. The Truffled Grilled Cheese with grilled peach, speck ham, mustard seed and shaved summer truffle made for a perfectly balanced appetizer with beautiful plating. The Smoked Lamb Collar was as good as any lamb preparation I've had. If you enjoy smoked meats this is for you. I won't list out everything we tried, but trust my pictures and know that each appetizer, entree and dessert were all spot on. Wow! From the second you enter in the restaurant you can feel the ambiance which is super cozy and inviting. This place is a BYOB with American cuisine. Our party ordered a dozen oysters, the fontina, and beef tar tar to start. These were the best oysters I've ever had!!! For entree I ordered the salmon which was delicious an d perfectly cooked. Others at my table enjoyed the pappardella and agnolotti, which I am definitely going to try next time around. For dessert we finished off with an olive oil cake and chocolate peanut butter mousse which tasted just like a Reese peanut butter cup! Four of us went for dinner last night. The place is very dark and dreary. They put bottles of water on the table and it obviously tasted like lukewarm tapwater. That was a disappointment. I ordered a Coca-Cola which they brought me and one of our guests ordered one. Waiter apologized and said they ran out of Coke at 5 PM on a Saturday! We were the first customers there! We ordered the fried chicken dinner for four. The chicken coating was spicy. I did not know that. It came with biscuits and sides. The chicken was really nothing special. Some pieces were dry. If you like spicy, dry chicken... Then this is the place for you. They alarms went off because of the smoke from cooking the chicken. It was piercing. Then in a little while the fire department came in to investigate. Sound level in the restaurant got very loud. The desserts were good. We ordered the donuts and our friends ordered the maple Brulé. We had a party of six, so sat at a table near the kitchen that looked as if it had a previous life as a workbench. I loved it! Chairs were comfortable too. We were right by the kitchen; it was open and ran so smoothly. Servers and staff were friendly, attentive, and quick to clean up after each course, yet not make us feel rushed. And the food- amazing! Two in the party, myself included are pescatarian so we ordered the halibut and the sweet potato angiolotti and shared them. They were delicious! You can see they helped each other and was very pleasant while doing so. We ordered appetizers-2 orders of east coast oysters (delicious) with fresh and burrata +fruit it was very good and presentation was appealing. We also ordered the last stuffed ravioli but since it's so popular it wasn't available. We will make a trip for it!! Instead we got the beef brisket tartare with a side of crispy potatoes. They were both sooo good!! I enjoyed it very much. We placed our orders for dinner and opened a few bottles of wine while we waited. It's also a BYOB. Kim poured us more wine. She mingled with us which was very nice. Had a wonderful dinner last night. The food, service, and ambiance was perfect for our girls night. Our server Ben was great and even put in a custom vegetarian dish for a friend (which was delicious). We started with oysters, focaccia, arancini, burrata salad, and the beet salad. Oysters were fresh, focaccia was fluffy, and all of our dishes were seasoned perfectly. The arancini were some of the best I've ever had. Our mains arrived and were equally good. A custom vegetarian dish, beef shank, octopus, pork schnitzel, and a side of potatoes. All were delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The sauces accompanying the dishes were also all unique and brought a lot of dimension to the dishes. Dessert was also great. Great, trendy little restaurant with an open kitchen serving some unique dishes. Second time here, love the food. Only downside is the menu is a little too limited. On this visit we started with the Fried Pork Belly and Clams which was delicious. The combination of the two really worked. For my entree I went with the Duck Confit Pot Pie. Doesn't get more unique than this as it is served to you with the legs of the duck protruding criss cross through the middle of the pie. I really enjoyed this dish. My wife had the Hand-Cut Parpadelle with Roasted Pork Shoulder. She loved it although the portion could have been slightly bigger. We finished with a wonderful dessert, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Tart. Really like it here, BYOB. Want to try the Fried Chicken next time we come. Another superb meal at T&W. This place always delivers - the food is superb, the staff friendly, efficient and warm, in an industrial chic decor interior. Started as usual with the oysters- the PEI winter Malpeques were delicious, the simple salad ( two orders enough for 4) with their foccaci followed by entrees for all. Both pastas and the Berkshire pork special were, as usual, excellent but the octopus today was mediocre. Great desserts. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Made a reservation through Resy and mentioned it was my birthday. Right when we get to our table, our server (who I also believe is one of the managers) told me to look at the top of the menu and it said "happy birthday Christine" right at the top which I thought was a sweet, personal touch. After we had a glass of wine (BYOB) we received our apps which were all fantastic. We got the roasted beet salad, chicken liver mousse, and the shishito peppers. All DELICIOUS. If I had to nitpick, I'd say use a different green for the beets since frisée was a little difficult to eat and didn't provide any real crunch or flavor. Entrees we're the duck confit pot (decadent, completely filled with duck) and I got the daily pork (which really changes daily; tonight's offering was kielbasa) and both were delicious. We usually skip dessert, but convinced ourself it was a special occasion and when asked for a recommendation our server said the donuts. They were unreal. Warm and orange caramel was so light and interesting. Citrus really came through and the sauce wasn't overly sweet. We will 100% be back! read more
