We had ordered take out when they offered the fried chicken dinner and it was some of the best chicken I've had around here. It was juicy and crispy, with the batter being just the right touch of sweet and savory as to not overpower the chicken. The rest of the meal with all of the sides were fantastic as well. When we feel comfortable to start sitting in restaurants again, this is on my list to visit and have a sit down dinner. read more

3.5 stars from me, but I'm rounding down to a three because of the weird server I had here tonight. I came in here with very high expectations after reading all the great reviews. When we were first seated we ordered coffee. The waiter came with a French press coffee brewer, and put it on our table. We poured ourselves two cups. Then the waiter came and removed the brewer from our table when it was still half full! He came back to our table to take our orders, and we told him we wanted more coffee. We also asked him why did he remove the brewer if it was still half full!? He said he would bring us over another one. For appetizers we ordered the fig and goat cheese flat bread and the burrata over fried Brussels sprouts in balsamic. The burrata over fried Brussels sprouts was delicious! The fig and goat cheese flat bread was just ok, and could of definitely been much better. It needed more goat cheese and the dough could of been made better. It was more like a little pizza pie if you ask me than a flat bread. For entrees we had the red snapper with sweet potatoes in a cider beurre blanc and the agnolotti quattro formaggi. We also ordered a side of crispy potatoes. The red snapper was just ok nothing impressive. The flavors really didn't work well with that dish. The agnolotti quattro formaggi was good, but nothing that great. The crispy potatoes was the best dish of the night! They were excellent! You have to understand after reading of the many 5 stars reviews we expected the dishes to blow us away, and they didn't. It's not like anything was bad, but nothing 5 stars worthy besides the crispy potatoes! Our waiter came to give us the dessert menu, and we asked him which were the best to order, and he told us the top 3 which were the chocolate peanut butter tart, maple pot au creme, and the brown sugar pound cake. We decided to order all 3. Then he went to the table right next to us, and they asked the waiter how the maple pot au creme was, and told them it wasn't that great and plain. He told them the brown sugar pound cake was the best dessert. After he finished with the table next to us I called him over and canceled the maple pot au creme dessert order. I asked him why he told us it was his favorite, but told the table next to us it wasn't that good and plain!? He didn't say anything. I then said we will take the apple crisp instead. The chocolate peanut butter tart ended up being by far the best out of the three we ordered. It was really good! The apple crisp was just fair. We had much better. The brown sugar pound cake was all dried out, and tasted nothing like a pound cake! We ended up getting friendly with the table next to us, and the lady and her daughter both told us the same thing that the pound cake was all dried out. It didn't even have the buttery taste like a pound cake is suppose to have! The lady at the table told the waiter that the pound cake was dry, and they thought it was horrible! Then she told the waiter we felt the same way! The waiter looked pissed off and walked away! Then a manager came over and talked to us, and we told her about the pound cake. She just heard our opinions and offered us another dessert which my table and the table next to us both declined. The right thing to do was to take the pound cake off the bill, but they didn't which is bad business! They also charged us for two orders of French brew coffee even though the waiter took ours away when we were only half way through! Another thing that bothered us was our table was dirty, and nobody came to wipe our area between courses. We felt something was just odd about our waiter altogether which is another reason why I'm rounding down to a three. Personally, I wasn't that impressed with the place like others reviews it, and after becoming friendly with the table next us they felt the food was just good, but not excellent. Some dishes they liked, and some they didn't. We thought some things were really good, and some things just fair. Great service and ambiance are the highlights of this Upper Montclair establishment. This would have been a five star review except for one major issue. Although every dish was well prepared and presented well, there was a tremendous lack of seasoning, specifically salt. A salt cellar with perhaps some pink Himalayan course salt on the table would have helped. Actually table salt would have been an improvement. 4.3 (?) stars. A friend of mine told me this is the only reliably good restaurant of this ilk in Montclair, and that they always try to sell you an $80-something steak. After eating here I can believe both. We got an $88 New York steak for two (25 oz), which came with fried smashed potatoes and blistered shishito peppers (also deep fried, which you can tell because there were tiny potato nuggets in the bottom of the bowl), and a delicious black garlic jus. The problem with deep frying shishitos instead of blistering them in a wok or a la plancha is they get coated in a thin layer of oil, which makes the other seasonings you toss them with (in this case, lime) slide right off. On the other hand, the steak was prime and pretty accurately/evenly cooked to medium rare. We enjoyed the expensive steak, which came with a really nice bearnaise. The potatoes come with an aioli that tasted just like it had dashi in it, but must have had some other high-umami ingredient since the chef told us "no sir." We also had an off-menu appetizer--raw bigeye tuna with snap peas, radishes, yuzu, and a ramp purée (it was green but I didn't taste any ramps), which was nice--and a burrata with smoky grilled asparagus, vanilla poached rhubarb, hazelnuts, and an aged balsamic something or other that had a gritty texture for some reason. That had a good combination of flavors, but I would have made it a rhubarb compote rather than large, al dente pieces, added some shaved raw asparagus, and included some kind of crunchy bread component. It was sort of hard to get one bite that had all the intended flavors all together, and I really wanted some more crunch. Like most places in Montclair, it's BYO, making it a relative bargain. The portions here are huge, putting Turtle + the Wolf in contrast with somewhere like Laurel & Sage in that they don't overcharge you for food since they can't make it back on wine sales. There were 3 desserts, none of which matched the intricacy/dedication of the savory courses. We had brioche donuts with strawberry purée. Nice and light. Also, a truly great cappuccino. Ambiance-wise, it looks like every other restaurant on earth, with subway tile and tasteful exposed wood and duct work. In contrast to most of the places like that, it's pretty quiet inside, perhaps owing to the sound absorbing panels in the ceiling. The service is good, they accommodated the surprise addition of our 3 year old, and the sparkling water is free. Unlike many of the places in this price/style tier in Montclair, we will gladly eat here again. read more

I was very impressed with Turtle + the Wolf. Specifically, I really liked their food. Other aspects of the restaurant (I'm sure) would impress others. Eating in this restaurant feels like eating in one of the dining rooms in a West Elm catalogue - not necessarily a bad thing. The service was very attentive. Our water glasses were always full and they poured our BYO red wine generously. Now, the food. I wish the portion sizes were bigger because it was so delicious. For entrees in Montclair hovering mostly around the $20-$30 range, though, it was reasonable. There are plenty of restaurants that score a $$$ on Yelp in Montclair that charge more. We tried the tilefish and brisket. The brisket was moist and tender and well balanced by the sides. The tilefish was fantastic - a really good piece of fish I don't usually get to try as most restaurants seem to think Chilean Sea Bass is an excuse to give up experimenting on tasty seafood. It was paired with, per our waitress - sunchokes - another new food for me. For some people it reminds them on artichokes, for me it was kohlrabi. Either way, that dish was amazing. Finally, we sampled the flourless chocolate cake and apple pastry for dessert. Both outstanding. Not much to say about that. I almost forgot the appetizer. We had raw oysters that were nice and fresh. The waitress was knowledgeable enough to let us know where they were from, their size and how they were likely to taste - all information on point. Even without the Brooklyn-style décor, I would still come back here. What a great experience! P.S. I THINK there is parking in the back, or at least off the main street. Saw many patrons come in through the back door. Doesn't hurt to check. Don't be like us walking a block in the bitter cold because we were afraid we wouldn't find parking closer. read more

Planned my mother's birthday party here and it went flawlessly. First off, the manager, Megan was fantastic to work with. We had a party that had dietary restrictions and Megan was such a help in customizing our family style meal to accommodate everyone. The waitstaff was quick, informative, and welcoming. The food was AMAZINGGGGG. It was a party of 9, so we did a family style selection. Megan also had the menus customized to say "Happy Birthday Maria". I suggest going to this restaurant. It is great for a romantic dinner or a small dinner party. Again, the manager Megan was the best; couldn't have planned such a great dinner without her. read more

Turtle and wolf is a nice new spot located in a prime location in Montclair, I was a big fan of the outside and a bigger fan of the interior, the decor was really neat! Heads up if you plan to come with a group, their reservations start at 6 persons and they will not seat you if you aren't complete. With that being said, we came for brunch and found the food to be pretty decent. The kitchen is open so you can see the chefs at work after you order, this is a nice touch because you can see that their keep a very tidy kitchen. I wouldn't say the brunch menu is limited, just different, it's certainly not a menu you would find everywhere else, which is excellent if you want to be adventurous. I ordered the egg frittata which came with sweet peppers and potatoes, it was good but I would definitely opt in to adding meat to it, it didn't feel complete. The homefries were very delicious. Overall my party was pretty happy with the place, the food was fresh and definitely made with tlc, I would go back. Enjoy. read more

Fantastic food in a cool urban spot in the heart of Upper Montclair. My friend and I trekked out to Upper Montclair for a good dinner and to explore the neighborhood. I was cautiously optimistic that we'd get a table at prime time Saturday night, though opentable showed no available reservations. My positive thinking turned out to work as were able to snag a table for 2. FYI - the place is BYOB but there are tons of liquor stores nearby. Cool, fresh vibe w/eclectic decor and shadowboxes lining one wall. Light wooden floors, earthy paints, and cool edison bulb lighting make for an inviting and cozy ambiance. Great, attentive service throughout and courses came out perfectly timed. They know what they are doing. The menu is mainly new American and focusing on flavorful proteins and hearty seasoned vegetables but they do have options for vegetarians and meatlovers alike. Now the food - we split a bunch of appetizers - rosemary foccia ($4) - delicious seasoned homemade bread and deviled eggs ($3) - well seasoned and a tasty bite. We also tried the local buratta over winter squash ($14) which was amazing. So beautifully plated and one mouthful of the squash and cheese together and I was in HEAVEN. The winter squash was amazing, fresh, decadent, and hearty. One delicious plate of food. We also got the roasted Spanish octupus ($17) w/pieces of chorizo and fried potatoes. Another amazing, hearty, and delightful dish. We split the duck pot special for main ($42). The duck was cooked perfectly and the crust for the pot pie was melt in your mouth, flaky, rich, and delicious. I was already stuffed and the duck was very rich so I only had a few bites but what an amazing dish. They appear to have a decent array of desserts (though we didn't have room to try). Trendy new restaurant! Decor is unique and modern. Service was great...hip young workers that were as friendly as they were attentive. Neither my water or wine glass went below half full the whole night. Food was good and very fresh. We started with the beet salad which I would highly recommend. For my entree I had the pork and beans...pork was cooked well and the skin was so crispy it tasted like bacon. Shared a side of cauliflower which was flavored well. Completely full, we still went for the zeppolis for dessert which were light and airy, nice and sweet. Great place! read more

Our meal at Turtle + The Wolf was decadent and delicious. The staff was charming and professional from the moment we walked in, and we loved the open kitchen. The mousse was very interesting and had a flavor than I've never had in a pate previously. The rabbit was perfectly cooked flavorful. My husband's brisket moist and flavorful, and a pleasant surprise for 'Northeastern' BBQ. Our desserts were the perfect sweet ending the a long and relaxing meal. My fiancée and I try a new restaurant every week and open table brought us to this restaurant. I was skeptical at first, but the second I walked in and smelled the special sauce on their signature wings I was hooked. I had the beef and she had the chicken - both were absolutely delicious. My beef was super tender. Her chicken was perfectly seasoned. I was impressed. This place is amazing. The food was great and the service matched. This weekend we made it to T+W; after hearing much about this new place on social media we made it a must to come try ourselves. The service was friendly and attentive. We ordered trout, brisket escarole and a mushroom appetizer. The mushrooms were served cold which surprised me but after my second bite I decided I loved them and the sauce they were served with. The brisket dish was full of fresh vegetables and the meat was very flavorful and tender. My husband's trout was so delish I'm sure we'll be going back next weekend and he'll order that again. Came here for a graduation party and we had the roasted pig along with the fried chicken platters. Amazing fried chicken! Not too greasy and seasoned to perfection. The biscuits here are to die for- buttery and perfect consistency. Side of Swiss chard au gratin is amazing as well as burst potatoes. The pig was good, but it was difficult to find pieces that didn't have a lot of fat on them - I suspect that's the case with whole roasted pig. Desserts were delicious and service was exceptional. If it weren't so pricey, I'd return many times for that amazing fried chicken. read more

On a terribly rainy summer Saturday night, this neighborhood Montclair gem provided a cozy refuge with some great food and service. Our server was truly lovely and she was super friendly, enthusiastic in her recommendations and on point in delivery of food and beverages. The atmosphere is low key, minimalist but warm, comfortable but not stuffy and the tables are amply spaced, which is refreshing for a Montclair BYO! All of our wines were opened, decanted as requested and water glasses filled at appropriate intervals. We started with the grilled octopus, the chicken liver mousse and a greens dish for appetizers. I opted to wait for the main course, which did not disappoint. We had the roasted 1/2 chicken which was moist and served with bok choy and mushrooms. Flavors were clean and the herbs really shined. I tasted our friend's brisket which was truly spectacular. My hubby enjoyed his mussels and the focaccia to soak up the delicious broth. The collard greens were also yummy. We skipped dessert but would have opted for the zeppoles if we had to. Coffee was superb. Overall we were impressed with the dining experience and will definitely return. If we had one suggestion, it would be to include a few more vegetarian/pescatarian options. It just seemed like if you don't eat meat or pork, you might be a bit limited. This truly might be my absolute favorite restaurant in NJ! I wish we got our waitress ' name because she was phenomenal. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about the menu, it made for a great first impression. The food: We had the crab salad, which was simple but expertly prepared. For entrees, do yourself a favor and get the duck pot pie. It was exquisite! We also enjoyed the pappardelle, which was rich and tasty. The crispy potatoes as a side were also YUM! I had heard about T&W and was excited to give it a try for a recent date night. The service was warm friendly and well paced. The food was quite good. The duck confit pot pie was one of my favorite entrees in a while. The steak was yummy but the fries in the steak frites were not good. French fries can be a tricky thing and these just didn't do it for me. They were some what soggy. The portions are generous and fair considering the price. I appreciate that is a casual, family friendly vibe with delicious food and plenty of parking. They lose a star because the bench is uncomfortable and you don't get bread, I'm sorry but if I am paying $55 for one entree I expect complimentary bread w/ butter or olive oil. They are a BYOB. I decided to check out this spot for brunch with my sister for her birthday. The ambience is cute and our waiter was so nice. We had the arancini balls to start which we enjoyed. My sister had the chicken and waffles, which the waffles were a bit overcooked in some parts. The chicken was moist and could of used a bit more flavor. I had the biscuits and gravy which were the perfect size. The gravy was tasty alongside the coddle egg. I would like to return for dinner sometime! read more

Items that I hope do not ever leave the menu: crispy potatoes, squid ink pasta, and moules frites. I had to add salt, pepper, and request BBQ sauce to really enjoy them. I had a fantastic experience at Turtle and Wolf. I booked their restaurant on a Saturday to celebrate my pup's 10th birthday. The reservation process was smooth, the staff was phenomenal, and the food was delicious. Booking the place: Lauren, the owner, responded promptly via email and laid out the options. When I met him in person, we discussed the finer details and both agreed. Leading up to the event, I gave him final headcount and requested a 30 minute adjustment in time and he agreed without a problem. Staff: Megan, Victoria, and Craig worked the party and they were attentive, professional, and added great energy to the party. They helped us set up a few things an hour before the party, managed the bar, and reminded me of the donuts I brought. I can't thank them enough for helping make the event successful. Food: all 41 guests that attended agreed that the food was amazing. We chose the buffet style rolling service option (they also offer traditional sit down service). This was perfect because the guests arrived at varying times and at no point was the food low or cold from sitting out. We came here on a whim for an early Valentine's Day dinner date. I saw the reviews on social media and figured I would give it a try. We made our reservation through OpenTable and it was a breeze. The place has a nice atmosphere and the wait staff attentive and brought their "A" game. Started off with the Foie Gras Torchon w/ had a strawberry puree, candied almonds w/ some thick, toasted brioche that was delicious. For our main courses, we had the Prince Edward Island Mussels & the Halibut. Both were plated beautifully & had a great taste.
