This place came recommended by a friend. I woke up one morning looking for a place to have breakfast with a desire for corned beef hash. The wall behind the counter is covered with 10 years of "Reader Awards" for best breakfast, etc. As luck would have it, corned beef hash is the first thing on the menu at the Turtle Cafe. Seemed like an omen, so, I went for it. The cook and I have pretty different ideas about what corned beef hash is. His hash is finely chopped corned beef about 1/4 inch thick, 8 inches long by 4 inches wide, and has no potatoes. I found one tiny piece of onion. Now add to that the fact that both sides were charred black, in spite of the fact that the waitress reminded him not to make it too dark. I noticed that the woman next to me at the counter smothered her "hash" with ketchup and Frank's hot sauce. That should have been the omen that I heeded. Overall very disappointing. read more

This place is one of my favorite places to eat in all of Connecticut. It's located on a cute little corner and also offers outdoor seating, which is so nice during the summertime especially with the mix of beautiful plants/greenery. This most recent time my significant other and I went, the restaurant was packed but we were still seated immediately at the one open table. It was a bit cramped, but as one couple in the corner got up and left, the lady working there asked if we preferred that seat and quickly cleaned up the table so we could move to where we had more space, which was super sweet. Additionally, I started off by ordering a hot chocolate to drink and once I finished it, she noticed and got me a glass of water without me even asking. Super friendly and thoughtful/conscientious of others... if I could give 6 stars I would! The food came out quickly and was FANTASTIC; the Nutella crepe is my personal favorite. Wonderful experience overall and certainly a place I would go out of my way to dine at again. read more

Creative dishes, cute interior, and excellent food - service was slow and a little spotty but makes sense on a busy Sunday morning. The specials board was SO enticing but I ended up ordering off the regular menu and sharing a few equally enticing dishes with my sister - gotta get the sweet AND savory dishes so might as well share! We split the BBQ Blues wrap with eggs, chicken, bacon, bbq sauce, mushrooms, spinach and gorgonzola, and it was truly an excellent choice. The wraps/frittata/crepe selection was delightful - we also shared a crepe with cookie butter and fresh fruit. Definitely wish this was closer to my neck of the woods - I'd be a regular. read more

This place has a unique and refreshing menu but plenty of traditional staples as well. Seating is limited so try to get there early if you're eager for breakfast or brunch. Between the three of us, we had waffles, a clam hash, and pancakes. We all agreed it was delicious: hot, fresh, and generously portioned. Omg stumbled on the GEM on our way back from the casino. Looking for good breakfast and this place blew my mind!!!!!!!!!!! I got the Tropical Crepe and my husband got the Sizzling Turtle. We sat at the counter right behind the chef and actually got to see him working. The food was beyond amazing. Really good flavor, fresh and very tasty. Watching the chef and his sous chef work was also nice and entertaining. It was basically like watching professionals on chopped or at a very high end restaurant on TV. I wasn't as impressed as the reviews raved but I suppose it was okay. No reservations needed. A few street parking in front of restaurant, parallel park. We circled to around and was thankful we got a space. Small joint that didn't provide much seating. We were worried since we had a party of 5 and was here for Saturday lunch time. A couple was leaving as we got there so we didn't waited long. But the waitresses were just talking and didn't wipe the tables for us to be seated until later. Is that the ode here? Chill and slow? There are bar seats like a diner and around 6-8 tables for regular seating. We waited for 10+ minutes just to get water and after ordering, our food didn't come out until an hour later. We saw people from each table leave and was wondering if they forgot about us, but they couldn't have because we were seated at the front of restaurant and waitresses pass us each time they eat in and out of the counter area. We were getting more and more hungry, or hangry shall I say. Some of us stared at our crepe that was just on the open kitchen counter next to the cook. We were sure that's it's our crepe, anything would do, we told waitress before we were sharing too, we wouldn't mind having the food come up at different times! They didn't have to all be served at one time but we didn't have that option. When the food did al come out at once, we were very pleased. Buffalo chicken quesadilla which was very good, two kinds of crepes (a sweet one and a savory one), egg frittata thing which was kinda dry, and favorites turtles skillet which was delicious. Things averaged around $10 or so, overall for 5 of us, we ordered 5 dishes or so and came out to around $53 not including tip. It's nice that people can bring in drinks in here, we brought in champagne to celebrate an ocassion as we called before coming to see if we can. We waited for longer time than us eating, waiting for over an hour, eating less than 20 minutes. Not a fan of the fact that we left the place smelling like food!!! My regular Sunday breakfast spot was closed today, so after all these years, I stopped in here because there was parking in front, and still lots of free tables. It's definitely a spot for regulars, and everyone knows everyone by name. The young chef, Lucas, is wildly talented! I'm not sure where they found him, but he's gold. Service was fine. My only complaint is that the place is filthy! It's tired and run-down, but also just plain dirty! The mirrors on the wall look like a five-year-old cleaned them. The silverware was dirty. Not all brunch requires mimosas. This place is small, with excellent food and coffee. We stopped after yelping for brunch near by and as always, Yelp does not disappoint. Quaint with quick efficient service. We had the sizzler- eggs, potato, peppers, onions, sausage and ham topped with aioli in a sizzling platter. It was crazy good. The counter is right in front of the grill so you can see your food being prepared. The owner and his staff were like a well oiled machine, cranking out meal after delicious meal with precision. We were traveling through Connecticut and looking for a nice place to have a hearty breakfast before our Essex steam train tour. We are so glad we came across this cafe. I watched Lucas the chef breeze his way through the preparation of meal after meal. Every plated meal he placed on the counter looked amazing. Our waitresses kept our coffee mugs full with freshly brewed coffee while I watched Lucas make magic at the stove. When our meals came to the table we were not disappointed! Everything we had was delicious! The pancakes were fluffy, the Nutella crepes were topped with whipped cream and freshly grated chocolate like it would be in a fine restaurant, and our eggs Benny were perfect - the eggs perfectly poached and the delicious. My husband and I stopped in for lunch as we were driving through the area. The reviews were great and the location was easy to reach from the highway. We were surprised at how small it was. But little place..big taste! My husband had an omelette which was served with crispy home fries. I had the Mediterranean veggie panini. I watched as a tower of vegetables were placed on the grill they were then cooked to perfection before being placed on the bread which was then pressed until toasty. The food is cooked mostly by Ricky, the owner and head chef, and is always amazing. I also read a review that they are racist... that actually made me laugh, as the place is owned by someone that isn't white. This place is fantastic. It was small and cozy and packed full of people. After I finished my food, I understood why. We sat at the counter next to Walter, a regular who has had 4 specials named after him. He said sitting at the counter is the best so you can watch the show. The best apparently is when they "flip" the oatmeal. Walter said it looks like a volcano exploding. Unfortunately, I missed it both times, but watching Chef Ricky was definitely intense. He puts out a large amount of amazing food. Right from the start I had a feeling it would be good, the coffee was strong and my cup was always full thanks to the wonderful waitresses. We ordered three of the specials on the board for the morning: eggs and homemade hash, the Biscoff crepes, and the smoked salmon Tikka Masala Crepe. The food was amazing, creative, and quite lovely as you can see from the photo. It marked the first time I had Tikka Masala sauce in a breakfast context and also the first time I experienced Biscoff spread, which is called a cookie butter. It is like nutella, but cinnamon-y and with little crunchy cookie pieces. Really yummy with fruit and caramel tucked inside a crepe. All of this food came to $26. Absolutely unreal! Best kept secret in the area! Best quality ingredients at amazing prices! I'm a regular for years and can't praise this place highly enough. One of the reasons I'm able to survive in this rural town. Crepes are by far my favorite, specifically mushroom chicken, grab the lobster crepe special when you can, loaded with NOMS and so fairly priced. The specials are always yummy an interesting often with salmon, pulled pork and lobster. The hash is homemade crepes are homemade, clarified butter, lovely greens. The service is always dear, and the chef Ricky really loves what he does and you can taste that love in the food. I've never experienced such quality attention to detail. The best way that I can illustrate this is that I've never had one of those slimy pieces of lettuce make its way into my salad. Plan a trip to the beach come visit this charming town and make sure you eat at the turtle call ahead sometimes they're closed early. Edit: there is a recent seriously misguided reviewer who cannot have accurately described this place, I suspect she's an operative from a competing breakfast joint. read more

This place was seriously good. A tiny cost setting for brunch but looks as if it was full of locals. The setting could only be better if it was beach front! I got the NY lox bagel which had salmon, cream cheese, tomato and capers on a bagel. It was super tasty and also decently priced. My favorite is the "Dipollo" which is a savory crepe filled with chicken, baby spinach, roasted red pepper, and ooey gooey mozzarella topped with oh so yummy lemon herb cream sauce. The menu offer variety with staples like savory crepes, sizzlers, frittatas with even some Arabic touch like the shakshouka which are preached eggs in savory tomato sauce. The rotating specials offer fancier ingredients like salmon, lobster and crawfish for both breakfast and lunch. I like that they keeps the menu fresh with interesting offerings which keeps me coming back. I recommend ordering ahead as the place fills up quickly. It's always fun to sit at the bar and watch the talented chefs cook up dishes like nobody's business. Rick the owner is awesome, and so are the younger chefs. There is a consistency with the quality of food regardless of who is making it, which I enjoy as my crepes come out perfect every time. But if I did not like something, they were always happy to make it exactly how I liked it. I would like if they offered espresso drinks but I'm happy with being allowed to bring my own. The meal was fabulous but the floor behind the counter was disgustingly dirty stuff all over the floor the garbage bags didn't even fit in the garbage can and the waitress touches the garbage can and then pours a cup of coffee for me and touches the cup near the rim.
