The restaurant is part of the Old Saybrook hotel and it has plenty of parking right in front. I got a delicious pork chop that was meaty and lean. The patio is delightful when the heat isn't on full blast. It was a little too hot, but I liked the patio. Service was great. Food came out quick and was wonderful. Beautiful, crystal-clear saltwater tank. The restaurant is located within a beautiful Inn. It overlooks a large, well-maintained marina. We arrived without reservations a bit after one pm on a Friday. (Mid-September). We only waited 3-5 minutes for a spacious booth inside. My husband and I are boaters and are quite familiar with this area; however, we have never come across this gem previously. We are looking forward to sharing our thoughts post-meal. Fresh Salt, a fairly large restaurant providing a variety of seating options. For one there's a full sized bar, surrounded by multiple dining tables for indoor dining. On those rare 2025 sunny days, there's also outdoor umbrella seating holding picturesque views of the marina. And for convenience there's an additional outdoor bar. To round off things there's an enclosed glass patio for use during inclement weather. As for the food, during one of our indoor dinners I chose the Mediterranean Halibut Filet as my main. Perfectly pan seared halibut on top of sautéed spinach, on top of Lemon Risotto surrounded by a white wine, tomato broth. It was a clean and fresh dish, yet very rich in flavors. This was a meal I didn't know I needed. One of the starters, Mushroom Bruschetta. A generous serving slathered with Roasted Garlic Ricotta, Asiago shavings and Porcini Mushrooms. This app could rival any meat dish. Another hit. Our server who was on point throughout, easily tempted us with dessert. It was an easy choice. We chose to share the warm chocolate chip cookie. It was buried under a scoop of Caramel Gelato, with all the sundae fixings, topped off with a heaping pile of hearty walnuts. A perfect way to end our meal. Great Dock dining spot! We pulled up to the marina and were able to get a quick table on a Saturday evening without a reservation. I don't advise not making a reservation but we were able to get in around 5:30pm. Dining on the water around sunset was romantic and really serene. Food was excellent! I chose Fresh Salt's Sunday brunch buffet to celebrate my birthday. During the summer months they have a "lobster extravaganza" and we wanted to check it out. At $60 a person, it's a bit pricey since we don't eat enough food to make it "worth it," but it was my birthday and I used a hard-earned OpenTable reward to make the reservation. The weather was amazing and we ate outside. The ambience made us feel like we were on vacation even though we weren't. It was great. The service was lacking. We had to ask repeatedly to have our water refilled. Our server had no idea what beverages, if any, were included in the buffet price. The food was great. The omelet station and pasta station were great made-to-order options. The fruit not quite ripe, and the other options were interested and ranged from delicious to just ok. Overall, it was nice if you don't mind spending a lot to have options. Worst part of the experience was paying. We told our server about our OpenTable reward and she checked with management and we were told they do not honor the reward. Even though it's presented like a credit card. That was surprising and a bit embarrassing. We would not have chosen to brunch here if we knew we could not use our reward. So in the end, we paid a LOT more than expecting and didn't feel like the experience and food was worth it. read more

I've visited this restaurant twice within the last 3 months. Both experiences were very positive - great cozy ambiance with a nice view of the water, great service (I wish I remembered the name of my waitress who had my table both times) and good food. My first visit, I tried the burger which was very tasty. On the second visit I had the pork chop, which was flavorful and not dry at all. I tasted the ribeye which was also delicious. So they do two portion sizes here with most of the food selections. Started with the large portion of the Ceasar salad to split. On the smaller side to split but still enough. Very tasty. For an entree I had the smaller portion of the Fresh Salt Cioppino. This is the second time coming here and having this dish since I loved it so much the first time. Definitely enough food with the salad. The lobster essence sauce is delicious. One critique. I substituted the pasta for the spinach and they buried it underneath the shellfish as if it was the pasta. That was a bit strange. Not a lot of it either. Would be nice if it was on the side. For $4.95 extra, again, would be nice on the side and a bit more of it. Boyfriend got the salmon and said it was very good. Hummus a nice touch. Service was excellent. Ambiance beautiful. I'm a chef who worked several prominent catering establishments In CT. My wife and I had the fried seafood platter. The calamari rings were so small they couldn't fit on my wife's pinky. The scallops were the size of a chick pea and I'm pretty sure we're skate fish. The shrimp were about the size of a quarter and taste like nothing. They have lots of outdoor sitting mainly for 2 people. And limited sitting for bigger groups so make reservations. Service was great and always has been. This is my third time here. This time Crystal took care of my sisters and I and did a wonderful job making sure we were hydrated and had everything we needed. We had a nice dinner here recently . The food is just terrific . Everything we ordered was cooked on point and delicious . There were a couple of issues . We requested a nice table ahead of time for our Anniversary . When you walk in straight ahead there is a nice looking romantic sort of restaurant vibe . To the right there is some sort of sun room , lots of windows , very bright , a bit tight and very LOUD. Not the end of the world but would have preferred a more romantic setting . It's also a bit pricey but given the quality of the food it's understandable . The shrimp cocktail was huge , fresh and the cocktail sauce was off the hook . Our server was a nice enough guy , but he seemed a bit harried and it appeared he was taking care of many tables . But he was polite and helpful . Fresh Salt is a beautiful restaurant right on the Marina in Old Saybrook. I've been here several times in the past but I didn't realize it was Fresh Salt, until my most recent visit. This place is expensive... of course, it's the beautiful ambiance of the Marina that makes it so expensive. I didn't get a cocktail, because they were too expensive. I got a beer, I got Half Full Bright. It's a typical blonde ale, with a bit of a tartness. I got Ceviche and the rest of the party got a few servings of calamari and their kettle chips. The calamari was just average, a bit greasy for me personally, but not bad. When my ceviche arrived I was in shock, this was the tinniesssttt serving of Ceviche I've seen in my life, and they charge $20 for it. The container it arrived is I'm sure the same one they use for their one scoop of ice cream or maybe a generous shot glass, I'm not kidding, it was tiny.. I was really mad. It was pretty good, I couldn't even enjoy it, it was gone by spoon two. It had shrimp, avocado, cilantro, pretty tasty till it was gone. Very cute location - but overall not a great dining experience. After being seated, we waited a good chunk of time for wait staff to show up to the table. Young, friendly and apologetic waitress took our drink order. She then promptly brought back drinks, took our food order and returned immediately with some yummy looking ciabatta rolls... that was the highlight of the meal. Before putting butter on the bread - someone else brought the meals and gruffly placed them on the table and took off. There was no possible way anyone could have had time to make them to order... and it was fried fish and fried seafood - something we indulge once a year. My plate was really hot to the touch - it had to be residual from a heat lamp that the meal had scorched under long before I placed my order. The fish was mildly warm, and bland. The fries were floppy, greasy, seemed reheated and not enjoyable. My companion's fried seafood platter appeared to have been cooked more recently - but the grease pooled on top of the fried clams and calamari was visible from across the table. Her fries had more of a crispness to them - but also had residual grease from the seafood. I did have one of the fried shrimp - that was a decent size and texture with good flavor, minus the extra greasy batter. Maybe it was an off night, or the later hour we arrived (9:00). Maybe our expectations were too high to have been served freshly fried food - but it was kind of inedible and not delicious. Summer indulgence misfire... can't recommend it and likely won't return. We spent over $100 on two drinks and super greasy fried seafood and left feeling sad about it. Leaving on a positive note - I do want to give props to the ciabatta rolls, at least. read more

The burger is really really good. The fish specials with lobster rissoto have been a hit on multiple occasions. The chicken dish is good. Siriacha Calamari app is amazing. Caesar salad was a big disappointment flavor wise. Swordfish has been hit or miss depending on how it is served (changes each season) Cioppino is good but could be better. Pork chop is prepared expertly and tender - but the flavor was not my favorite because the bacon brought out a hot dog flavor. The cocktails could be made better. Sometimes they are too boozy. My husband and I stopped in to Fresh Salt for a bite to eat, and decided to have dinner at the bar. They were extremely busy for a mid-day Sunday timeframe, so the bar services was a bit backed up. That said the drinks were perfect and Peter was an amazing mixologist and server! We ordered the regular calamari, which was crispy, tender and flavorful - just the way we like it! On the way to the restaurant I looked at the menu for beef options because I was in the mood for a steak. When I arrived, I realized the menu was slightly different with a NY Strip rather than (my preferred) tenderloin cut. As I was trying to determine my Plan B for an entree, Peter told us about the seared halibut over lobster risotto with a burre blanc sauce. Ding ding - sounded amazing and it WAS. It was absolute perfection on a plate, and could be worthy of a James Beard award! The chef who created this fabulous dish came out to meet us after we sent accolades back to the kitchen. As foodies, we are always thrilled to meet the chef! My husband had the duck, which was cooked to perfection and very tasty. He did comment to me that the carrots were a bit 'al dente' and slightly undercooked, but overall really enjoyed his meal. And, some of mine as well!
