Great service and cozy vibe. Food was good. I prefer traditional pho but it was still good. Dark and stormy was off but the meatloaf was yummy!

I was expecting more for the price of the dishes. The bill was $120 for 2 apps and 2 entrees, with no alcoholic drinks. Overall, there was a lack of flavor. The portion sizes were on the smaller side. The appetizer was the best out of the three dishes we had. The pears were a nice touch and brought the most flavor out of all the dishes we ordered. The cuttlefish ink pasta was lacking the brininess and the texture that I expect from squid ink pasta. The shrimp and calamari were bland. The swordfish was clearly frozen from the pack and flavorless as well. The beans were a weird choice to pair with fish. I didn't want to be rude and give them 1 star, but I was expecting a lot more for the amount we spent. There was a reason why the other businesses were busy while this one was empty when we had dinner.

"If I had wings and I could fly, I know where I would go. But right now I'll just sit here so contentedly And watch the river flow" (Bob Dylan) If you've never been to Chester, CT but are reasonably close to visit, you really need to fire up your GPS and make a trip to this charming little town. You'll find a vibrant Main Street with clothing and jewelry shops, a brewery, and restaurants. A whole lot of restaurants. The town has a very chill Bohemian vibe that is overflowing with hustle and bustle during the warm weather months. Four of us had lunch reservations yesterday. It was my first visit to River Tavern and I really loved it a lot. All of the lunch menu entrees are under $24, and quite a few are under $20. To start things off, a former co-worker and I split an $18 order of half a dozen Mystic Oysters with lemon and cocktail sauce. They were very good! Our table went in four different directions for lunch - a $22 Fish Sandwich, a $20 Burger, a $24 Eggplant Parmigiana, and a $24 Fish Soup. The Fish Soup was mine and it was one of the best dishes I had all year. It was a heaping bowl with chunks of monkfish and halibut, with a few big scallops, shrimp, clams, mussels, fennel, peppers, onion, saffron, lemon, and fresh herbs. It was excellent. Our server Tara, and the young guy that also pitched in at our table, were both friendly, coureous, efficient and professional. The restaurant is beautiful. There is a bar and dining room up front and a second dining room in the back that has an open space where you can peer into the kitchen. PRO TIP You'll get a full access view of the kitchen if you need to visit the restroom because the circuitous path to the restroom will take you right through the kitchen! Yes, you read that correctly. Our meal for four included the oysters, a wine, a beer, two gin and tonics, and four entrees, and that ran $152 after tax and before tip.

One of my favorite restaurants in the charming town of Chester. Menu changes multiple times a year to keep seasonal ingredients. The service is always on par, friendly and attentive. The shrimp and pasta dishes are typically my favorite. When they have the guacamole, I usually get it because it's always wonderful. My favorite drink here is their spicy margarita with salt. Superb. Tiny little place... but cozy. This place is no secret-so you might want to make a reservation ahead of time.

River Tavern serves up some of the best food in Chester. Despite having so many good options for dinner in Chester, River Tavern always has something new and exciting to try on their menu, making them the perfect option. The cocktails are spot on. We tried an autumnal drink special that had apple cider and was perfection in a glass! We also got the jungle bird cocktail with rum and their cosmopolitan which was perfection. For apps we started with the burrata special and the chickpea fried shrimp- both were lovely and fresh. For my main I had the fried chicken with delicious barbecue sauce and coleslaw and fries. Overall, the service was lovely and inside is cozy and warm. Perfect for a date night or just a fun night out!

River Tavern is a gem. When we were at Yankee Cider Co., we met some awesome locals and they said this was definitely the place to have dinner. We can't thank them enough. We walked in at 4 PM, without a reservation, and somehow managed to get an awesome table by the front window. Amazing. We started with Chinese Style Pork Buns- grilled pork belly, hoisin sauce, pickles, sesame seeds and cilantro. Wow. Just wow. Loved it. Also tried the Confit and Grilled Octopus- saffron aioli, fingerling potatoes, tomatoes, olives and charred peppers. Another flavorful knockout. I love octopus! We both also had the Starburst to drink. It was a refreshing mix of crop lemon vodka, fresh lime juice and elderflower liqueur. Tart and delicious. Dinner time arrived and we order the Pan Roasted Sea Bass and the Grilled NY Strip. The Sea Bass had a Thai red curry sauce, roasted radish and a salad of shaved crispy vegetables. peanuts and a chili lime sauce. Such a nice zip. My friend had the Strip with sauteed fingerling potatoes, shishito peppers, onions tomatoes, grilled radicchio and gorgonzola crema. Cooked to perfection. I scored a bite or two. Yay! This town is so cute. The food, drinks and scenery...all worth a visit. We even saw a double rainbow in the sky during our meal. Does it get any better? Can't wait to return.

    Peak at the drink menu!

There also appears to be extra seating at the back of the restaurant. The menu is small but has plenty of selections, both small and large bites as they call them. Our server, who was very friendly and pleasant as well as the other staff, took our drink orders and let us know what the fish was for the evening. We decided to order the sourdough bread, French onion soup, and two burgers with fries. This is a very relaxed atmosphere, a little in the dark side, and the seating was very tight between tables given the size of the restaurant but we adjusted the table and made it work. The bread arrived hot from the oven with their house butter which I couldn't quite figure out was in it. Almost seemed sweet as if it was a maple syrup base but can't say for sure. The bread was incredible and didn't last long. The French onion soup arrived in a large bowl with a number of crispy croutons and plenty of onions. The soup was very tasty with a little bit of a bit to it. The croutons were a very nice touch as they stayed crispy ti the soup was gone. The burgers arrived hot off the grill with large baskets of very crispy French fries. The burgers were large, cooked medium as requested, with nice slices of Grafton maple smoked cheese, bacon jam. Lettuce, and Dijon mustard. The burgers are very thick and the roll is soft and grilled nicely. The fries, which were right out of the flyer, stayed crispy through the whole meal. There are a couple of steps up into the restaurant so if you have mobility issues it might be a little bit of a challenge. All in all a great little restaurant with incredible food and great service. The next time we're in the area there may be a return trip.

Here's how things went for me during my visit. Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right on the Connecticut River in Chester, CT connected to its own marina is this gem. Reservations are recommended especially in the summertime since THIS is the place where you wanna be. We were here in early April so things hadn't quite picked up, but at least the snow was gone and we didn't need to wear super heavy coats. The parking lot is massive so if it's busy you'll be walking for a minute before you get to the door. But once inside it's pretty modern, chill and relaxed. The decor isn't over-the-top. Everything is straight-edged and just... almost minimalistic. However, we sat in the patio area that was certainly heated so we could see the view of the water while the sun set. It was a wide-open setting and I'm very glad the restaurant didn't smash too many tables and chairs in there. Service: I can't remember who took care of us, but I don't remember having any issues throughout dinner. It was fairly slow so I didn't expect any hold-ups. Food/Drinks: I started off with an old-fashioned which was fine. Nothing crazy. Next up was a New England clam chowder which is perfectly seasoned and flavorful. Textures were good and so were the seasonings. Spot-on. For dinner I went with their Prime Rib! It came out perfectly medium-rare with a side of fingerling potatoes, grilled squash, au jus and horseradish sauce. It was good. Just... kinda not exciting. :-/ Maybe I should've gone the seafood route since we were on the water. But no matter. Value: Not too crazy here. It's a nice restaurant, but prices aren't out of control. You can totally come here to chill, have a drink and an app or a full-on family dinner and not be upset at the final bill. In conclusion I liked it here, just not enough to want to drive all the way out here again. Would I come back? Sure, if I were invited by friends and stuff, but I highly encourage you reading this to pay this place a visit and enjoy the views! Thank you for reading.

I then ordered a house made pretzel $10- which came in a single braided format 10-12 inches long. It arrived with 2 ramekins of cheese sauce & stone ground mustard. I opted for the mustard. I enjoyed the play between savory and acid. I chose my eggs to be prepared over easy expecting the yolks to add the desired richness that tomatillos can handle without overpowering their bite. What set this version apart for me was the addition of the pickled vegetables. They greatly complimented the tomatillos with their own sweetness and acidity that made for a well balanced bite. Others in our party felt similarly, that their meals were so flavorful and so well execucted that it made for a superb dining experience.

They have a good amount of outdoor seating to the right of the entrance. Inside is a small bar with about eight seats (didn't count) and several high tops. There is also a loft with more seating overhead. We walked up a few steps to enter the building from the parking lot. I'm not sure if the side entrance also has steps so if you have mobility needs, call ahead to check. We sat at the bar and as it was a hot day, I asked for a water before ordering a drink. The water was refilled several times during our visit without my needing to ask. I really appreciate that! The bartender seems to be the owner from the way he was talking and let us know they have live music two night a week plus some nights they offer a special menu like Prime rib night or dogs eat free night. Yes, besides the kids menu, they have a menu for your pup. The interior is very much a barn, with lots of fun, metal signs and train memorabilia all around. Two TV's were on in the front corners of the room so you may be able to watch your game (golf the day we went) but it's not really set up as a sports bar. There is one fair sized restroom for everyone that is clean and locks with a hook and eye latch. They have a good size drinks menu which includes a variety of cocktails, a selection of draft and bottled beers and wine. The bar has quite a collection of whiskeys and tequila's. A separate menu is available for their pub fare foods. The menu is very well crafted. Lots of chicken options, sandwiches and wraps, burgers, hotdogs and salads. My SO got the spicy chicken sandwich. When asked, our bartender let him know it was spicy, but not too spicy and they have hot sauce behind the bar if he wants more heat. Which of course he did. He enjoyed the sandwich; crispy chicken, tasty sauce, fresh veg and bread. Messy to hold, after using several napkins he finished it off w/his knife and fork. Table ware set on the bar after ordering is in small paper sacks. I went for a burger. The patty is quite large, cooked to order and juicy. Fresh veg on there, soft bread and tasty. I enjoyed this burger and it was large enough I almost couldn't finish it. I opted for a side salad (for an up charge) instead of fries. The salad is a good sized side, the veg were fresh and the dressing is on the side. I did try the fries that came with the chicken sandwich and those are really good fries. Fresh potato, crispy outside, fluffy inside, salted. Really good. This was an excellent stop. Chatted with some friendly locals and the barkeep. Had a beverage. Grabbed a tasty sandwich. We left stuffed and happy. What more could you ask.
