Amazing place to grab a bite to eat! The food here was good, and they serve breakfast and lunch options all day! The food is really good, and the salad is made to order. The price is also very reasonable for what you're buying, so it's a great place to stop if you're out for the day and want a quick bite to eat. The service was very nice as well, with the staff friendly and helpful to patrons as well as enjoyed being around one another and working together. Communicated order well and got us our food in a timely manner. Additionally, when I entered, staff was sanitizing countertops and tables, which let me know that the establishment is clean The ambience was nice. Small indoor seating area. They had multiple freezers and refrigerators running, which had a slightly annoying hum when trying to eat or talk, but not deafening; worst case scenario I could eat outside or in my vehicle and doesn't effect the overall atmosphere for the business. Exploring Connecticut and came across What's Cookin'. Decided to pop in for a bite. I was impressed with all of the gluten free options they had in their ready-made cases. Several paleo and gluten free dessert options too. Several people came in for to go orders as we ate our breakfast panini and split pea soup. Both items stayed hot throughout, which is unfortunately rare in many dining establishments. All employees were nice and helpful. Oh my this has got to be sandwich heaven. Ordered a chicken cutlet (pick your own toppings) provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo. Simple but they made it with perfection. Quality meat, and veggies and the hard roll was fresh. Girl behind the counter was polite and explained their vast menu to me. Seems like a mom and pop shop kind of deal which I love. Stopped on my way to work for a salad. Ordered a small strawberry arugula salad and added chicken. Was very surprised when the women rung me out and my total was $15.63. If it was a big salad with nice grilled chicken on it I wouldn't have minded paying that price. But when I picked up the bag it didn't it feel like anything was in it. When I finally got the chance it eat it I was so disappointed. The chicken seemed like chicken you find in the freezer section of the grocery store. And was maybe about 3-4oz worth. I was so excited to see a paleo sign on the side of the road! Our party of 5 all had excellent meals. Egg salad sandwich, goat cheese veggie special, and roast beef sandwich. The two kids even had a place to play while they waited. Then someone came out and asked us first if they could have a lollipop. After skipping this place for months based on prior visits, I decided to try it again. I want this place to succeed bc the paleo menu is great and the food is pretty good. The problem is the service is poor, as others have pointed out. What I wish they would do is bring in a consultant or someone who knows how to run a place like that efficiently and put some new procedures in place. It's like a fire drill in there with a simple order. 5 different people got involved and it takes way too long. Sure, they seemed busy, but there's no way it should take over half an hour for such a small, simple order. When I've been there in the past, they've always been a bit slow, but I put up with it. What's Cookin? I don't know. You tell me. This place recently opened in the former Balladino's Deli spot on Route 1. It's kinda similar to Balladino's except they added a few tables/chairs, added a salad bar, and are opened until 6:00 PM. I like that last part because Balladino's was never open whenever I drove by. I really wanted to like my first visit here, but unfortunately I had a hard time choosing something from their menu. I mean, it wasn't because of the quantity of items. Rather it was because I couldn't find anything interesting. Everything looked boring. They've got the usual hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, and other deli sandwiches. I guess I was looking for something a little more creative. So I picked up a mozzarella/tomato sandwich and salad which honestly wasn't that bad. All of it was for under $10. Back to the creative part. I'm afraid this place will have a hard time surviving unless they specialize in a little more creative dishes. I mean competition is tough in town for take home dinner places. There's Pasta Avest in Guilford, Bradley & Wall, and School House Deli in Madison. I've had some kick ass sandwiches from School House Deli and some lip smacking Italian food from the other two places. I think What's Cookin needs to be successful is to find a specialized niche. I wish them lots of luck but if they just stay with ordinary they're not going to last very long. read more

Came here for the first time today. Got a chicken barbeque on spinach wrap. The sandwich was delicious with a nice tangy bbq sauce, and the wrap was pretty darned stuffed-i did not leave hungry. I have frequented What's Cookin' for several years now, almost since it opened its doors. I often visit for a sit-down lunch with a friend, or on other occasions I will phone in my orders to pick up later. My favorites are the #3 or an Italian wrap. I've also had a hamburger and a plate of pancakes there and they were all good. They use Texas Toast for their breakfast sandwiches and that is a real plus.
