We decided to have lunch this time and it was nice to be able to walk in and find a table during the weekend. The hostess was very nice and welcoming. I wanted to sit on the patio because it was a sunny day. The ambience was very nice. We opted for tacos and margaritas. The margaritas and beer were very good. My husband devour his tacos. I opted for chorizo for some reason completely forgetting that they were spicy. The waitress was very nice. Overall, great experience with a fantastic ambience. If ever in the area, I would definitely come back. The ambience was outstanding. It is built into what looks like an old Mexican barn structure with tons of decorations. Very unique and eclectic. We absolutely loved it. The prices were average for this type of food. Sorry to say it's been awhile since we visited. Spontaneous decision last evening for a drop in - far beyond expectations. Red sangria with really fresh fruit slices complemented the crispy chips and delicate salsa dip delectably. As always, I selected the chef's special offering : Baja lobster tostadas - perfect ! Had a wonderful experience at Cuckoo's Nest this week.it was my first time and I really enjoyed it. When walking in it Restaurant appears small but it's not. It's full of rooms decorated all differently! All so colorful! Decor is pretty cool too with a lovely patio area! Service was excellent! Food was very good. This is a fun, highly decorated Mexican restaurant. The help from the hostess to the waitress are friendly and professional. I ordered a hard taco Mexican corn. We had fresh guacamole and plantains. All of it was delicious except the corn was possibly a little overdone, but that's to be expected I've only found good corn in a couple restaurants in all of my travels. The taco was great. They melted the cheese for some reason, but I just took it out. I recommend this restaurant, whatever the shortcomings there are more positives than negative. Namely good cheer. HOME of the $2.50 SALSA REFILL CHARGE! Third trip here and with wildly inconsistent experience each time. Food is okay, but you go for the ambience. Definitely a fun atmosphere, but in our last visit the waitress was a bit upset we weren't ordering the overpriced drinks (it was a Monday night!) Also, the bill was a bit lower as my wife and I split an entree. I know this scenario is not conducive to a check total so the waitress, in order to pad the check, added a $2.50 salsa refilling charge when we ran out of sauce eating the fajitas. Ha! In all my years eating Mexican I've never had a salsa refilling charge for sauce that probably comes out of a food service can. Oh did she forget that tip amount is based on service? Very much a party place so go for that reason. But don't expect quality food or great service. And whatever you do ration out that salsa! read more

The employee who greeted us at the door --who I sadly did not get the name of-- was so polite, she greeted us with the warmest smile and was just awesome. she had straight black hair and tan skin if that helps identify her, but she seriously needs some credit because she was awesome. Cuckoos best is a fun place with good food n drinks. Music is good and whether you eat inside or out it's festive. When you sit down they give you chips n salsa like other Mexican food places. Small salsa for like one person when there are 6 of you. When asked if you want more salsa they charge you about $3. Never had that happen before. Transparency would have been nice. Drinks are really good but a bit pricey. Food average but good variety. read more

We've eaten here twice in the last month which says a little by itself. The place has been here for many years. The eclectic decor is fun and creates a super casual ambiance. The waitstaff is friendly, well trained, and willing to make recommendations. Our nachos were awesome, probably the hit of the meal. My enchiladas were hot, had plenty of sauce and hit spot. The gazpacho was disappointing-watery and bland. We like this place and will definitely be back. After spending a full day at the beach, we stopped at Cuckoo's Nest for dinner. I didn't know much about this place, other then it was Mexican. This place is such a pleasant, unexpected experience! First, it's completely decked out in Mexican decor. There is so much to look at! La Pastorelas are all over the walls. There's colorful napkins on tables, and colorful flags hanging everywhere. We were on their upper level. Olivia was our waitress. She was wonderful, attentive and patient, with a smile! She started us with waters and chips and homemade salsa! It was very tasty salsa! As we were looking at the menus, all of a sudden a group of about 12 young Mariachi singers sang and played their instruments. I didn't anticipate this at all. One of them came right to our table and sang just to us. These are some very talented kids! We decided on the guacamole, it's my staple at Mexican restaurants. We also got their taco salad to share, and an enchilada. Honestly we snacked so much on the chips and salsa, that we weren't that hungry anymore. The guacamole was perfect! It was fresh, chunky and just delightful! The taco salad was with beef. This was also flavorful, with all kinds of textures and richness! Very filling and plenty for us three to share. I enjoyed it a lot! We also got a chicken enchilada. Which at this point we were all well fed, but it was small so we managed to eat it also. I was a bit underwhelmed by the enchilada, it was cold and a bit too salty. Cuckoo's Nest is a very lively place that makes good Mexican dishes. Olivia informed us that the Mariachi band plays every first Friday of the month all day, we just happened to come in on the first Friday in July! I'd for sure come to Cuckoo's Nest again, ideally on a Friday when it's extra lively, but really anytime for tasty food! read more

I felt like having Mexican food and haven't been to Cuckoo's nest in years. It's a unique restaurant with various room upstairs and down for dining. We started with guacamole and chips. The guacamole was tasty and there was a distinct lime and cilantro taste which I really like. My boyfriend ordered the adobe chicken, which was a special for tonight. He loved it. He is a food snob so to get a high approval from him is pretty rare. He said the potatoes and asparagus were done well too. I had the lime shrimp tacos. They were ok. Unfortunately I've had better. The tacos could have had more than the three shrimp to fill the shell. The rice was ok too. I looked around to see what others ordered. The steak looked amazing and I would probably get that if we go back. It was a large portion and I could hear them talk about how delicious it was. The taco salad looked good as well. Very large portion filled with goodies. I need to comment about our experience when we first walked in. We decided to eat early (5:15) because it was Saturday night and we didn't want to wait to get in. I could see that it was about 50% full. We were brought to the booth right next to the kitchen. I asked if we could have another table and she did not seem too happy about it. She asked where we wanted to sit and I said anywhere other than the kitchen. I apologized several times and there was no response. I am hoping that it just wasn't her night because I could see that she treated others the same way when they walked in (not friendly). When we left we walked right by her and again no response. Greeting people with a smile and thanking them for coming goes a long way. We had the fajitas. Absolutely awful. Why would you saute zucchini and carrots with fajitas? All you need is peppers and onions. The sauce served with these fajitas was nothing more than ketchup and vinegar. The meat for said fajitas was not skirt steak, probably London broil. Not good. We came because safe place for Celiacs to eat, food and margaritas are decent. However, the prices in the menu DO NOT reflect what was on our bill. We caught the $8 overage on the pitcher of margaritas (because we discussed the cost to split it prior). Our server fixed that when we pointed it out. Afterwards, discovered two of our three entrees were also over charged by $2 & $5, which was not fixed by our server when we asked her to adjust the margaritas. As a former server, this seems like a long scam by the restaurant and not intentional from our server. If you do eat here, keep a menu on the table and check your bill against it for EVERY ITEM! Came here with my family a friends. The food here is really good. And I love all the choices of tequila that they have. The staff was friendly and prompt. I liked our waitress. I don't remember her name, but she was very friendly and helpful especially when my girls knocked their drink over. Kids will be kids. I had the Mexican Mojito. I highly suggest that if you like mojitos. It was so good and not so strong on the mint. My favorite kind of tequila are the Blanos and they had so many choices. I would have loved to get one of each, but then Clothes would have probably come off. Plus my kids were there. So no lol. The chimichanga was good but the chicken was dry. It was a bit hard to swallow that, so I had to cover it up with the hot sauce that came with my daughters fajitas. Not in the mood for seafood and can get past not dining by the water? Stop here! I've passed by this place for years and never stopped, but each time I commented how I wanted to give it a try. The parking lot is usually packed so I figured it MUST be good! Well let me tell you it didn't disappoint! I sat outside on the patio on this visit, I loved how the patio was in the back of the restaurant and was partly enclosed. While the inside appeared to have some great decor, the outdoor dining area also transported me far from Old Saybrook! We were quickly brought chips & salsa after we were sat. While the chips weren't warm or overly salty, the salts was great and provided a great snack to accompany margaritas while waiting for the main event. I started with a margarita, I believe it was the one with Patron but it did contain OJ (wish I could remember the name) ! I missed the small section of flavor add-ons when I first went through the menu but went for one of my favorites on round 2: a coconut house margarita! Both were delicious and just the right amount of tequila! For the meal, I went with the Fried Fish Tacos. Everything about them was perfection between the flaky cod underneath the crunchy batter to the sauce and freshness of the cool avocado! I'll be ordering these next time! I also loved how the yellow rice and black beans were combined (more rice than beans). This late lunch hit the spot! Im looking forward to my next visit already! read more
