I'm surprised by the low ratings for Tullibee on here. I had a stellar experience there last night. One of the best meals I've had out in Mpls in awhile.
The good:
The food! The food is top notch for sure.
We split the sourdough (delish but not exciting),
the duck meatball soup (incredible broth... so flavorful),
the cabbage (roasted in some vinegar heaven),
the lefse (great, savory and toasted, served with mutton confit.. my only complaint is there wasn't enough of the mutton confit), and
the crispy potatoes (not crispy. more on poor naming later. these were oozing with a mustardy gouda revelation. so good).
The ambiance. This is a truly beautiful space. High ceilings, massive windows, great modern decor. Understated elegance with a dash of hipster. Just a dash.
The meh:
Service. Overall excellent service. Host was friendly and efficient. Many helpful servers and bussers making sure our waters were filled, plates were cleared, etc. My only complaint was with our server herself. She described the dishes on the menu by reading the ingredients that were listed on the menu back to us, without giving any additional color or advice. She then disappeared for about 25 mins before finally coming back to take our order. We ended up waiting a lot. And she seemed annoyed when we flagged her down to place a dessert order even though we'd told her we wanted dessert, she'd given us a dessert menu, and had been staring at her from our empty table for quite a while. A fairly frustrating experience. I know they just opened, though, so I'm hoping this is just new-restaurant kinks being worked out. 'Cause the food is the schnizz.
Ooo, that reminds me.. I forgot to mention the dessert! Delectable play on sweet pots and 'mallows. Came as a light mousse with a hint of sweet potato, served with a few burnt marshmallow cream dabs, some zingy cranberry gelee splashes, and a fragrant spice cake. Loved it!
Which brings me to my other "meh." This amazing dessert was titled "sweet potato parfait | cranberry | spice cake." What the deuce? It was nothing like a parfait, and was exponentially better than the menu description. Same with the rest of the dishes. The "crispy potatoes | Gouda | [something I can't remember]" were decidedly not crispy and were WAY better than described. We concurred that an appropriate name would be "sex potatoes," because that is how good they are, and that the restaurant should hire someone (*cough* me *cough*) to anoint these dishes with menu descriptions that actually give credit where it's due. Because the food is bomb. read more
