My wife and I have been here several times and really enjoyed the food and the service. We went the day after Valentine's Day and they were still serving the Valentine's menu. They only offered a few choices - my wife chose the chicken and I the Filet. Mine was cold. She thought hers was supposed to be stuffed but it wasn't. All in all for the price we were charged the entree' choices were poor & the food quality was sub par based on our previous experience with the restaurant. We have not given up on the restaurant - we just won't go during a "Special" weekend or events. I know they can do better!! read more

Troppo is a decent place to get drinks, but the food can be kinda "meh" considering the price. I've been here three times with mixed results. The first time I went everything tasted overly (and disgustingly) sweet to me. Since then, I've made sure not to order anything that could seem even a little sweet at this place. The second time I had a steak which was quite good. The third time I had drinks and appetizers, and everything was fine though the service could have used work. 1st Visit: Very Good. I don't get the bad reviews. We used to eat out all the time and on vacation would seek out the nice expensive places to eat. We went to Vegas for the food, not the gambling. Then kids came and we don't eat out as much anymore but for date night we recently tried Troppo, it was the best meal we've had since Mesa Grille in Vegas last time. The service was also excellent.. My wife had the catch of the day which was salmon prepared with a chipotle glaze of some type. It was served on a brown butter risotto (which was very dry for risotto, Anthony Bourdain would not have been happy, but still delicious). We both liked it. I had Scallops Rockefeller which was amazing. I would have preferred the scallops be a little more cooked, they were done, but just barely. It was a minor issue on of the best plates I've had. The scallops were under a strangely al dente and cheesy spinach crust that was delectable, and over some heavenly whipped potatoes swimming in a lemon caper sauce. Service was excellent, also the best we've had since Vegas, and I am very critical on service. I never wanted for anything, never had an opportunity to notice my glass low. Our ticket came to $100 with drinks and dessert, I feel like we got our money's worth. That being said, I did notice one server chatting up a single table for a long time (about politics, which might make sense considering the location) to the detriment of his other tables, so those other tables may not have gotten as good of service as we did. 2nd Visit: Still Good. We went back tonight and had another very good meal. Service was a tad slow at first, but otherwise very good, diligent, friendly. I wanted for nothing. My wife ordered the butternut squash soup which she knew she liked, and I knew I didn't like (too sweet for my palate). I had the sweet and sour calamari appetizer which was very very good, the calamari was perfectly cooked, not too tough, hardly chewy at all. I got the chicken piccata, which came over a bed a mashed potatoes, I was expecting pasta (the menu mentioned neither, I just assumed) but it was very very good. Not as heavy as some picatta's I've had (more lemon/wine, less cream), I completely cleaned the plate. It was a decent portion too, 3 big pieces of chicken. The wife got "peasants pasta" which was, ironically, very rich. Heavily cream based sauce tossed with pancetta, peas, and pasta. It was very good, I ate some of it, she liked it a lot though did not relish the caloric volume. Both plates looked good coming out too, we eat with our eyes first and they were not disappointed. We got dessert. I had a chocolate cream pie with bruleed bananas, presentation was excellent, taste was excellent, I again cleaned my plate. My wife got chocolate chip cheese cake. She remarked it tasted fresh, not frozen, I tried it, thought it was okay, but its cheese cake, how bad can it be? She did not finish it, though that was because she was simply full, we brought it home for the kids. For the two of us with soup, app, two meals, two deserts, 1 cocktail, came to $75 pre-tip. read more

We made reservations over two weeks prior to Christmas Eve for their last seating at 6pm. We got a email confirmation for it. Came in from Chicago, picked up my dad, drove downtown. When we got to the restaurant it was closed. I have never had this happen to me. I understand if they wanted to close early but at least they could have the courtesy to call. My Family and I ended up coming here for lunch one day recently. Boy was that a mistake, First of all the restaurants atmosphere is actually very beautiful and the restaurant itself is very well decorated which is the only reason its getting 2 stars. Service, was okay but on the slow side. Now lets get to the food. So firstly it seemed like every table was getting bread when we sat down but, I guess we did not receive any- not sure if the waiter forgot or you had to order it. Lunch menu was very limited in options. I ended up going with the 20 dollar steak deal. Dont get me wrong I know its 20 dollars so I was not expecting it to be anywhere near amazing, secondly who the hell has a 5 oz steak on their menu in the first place. It was by far probably one of the worst steaks I have eaten in my life and I have eaten many places. Well being from out of town I had to rely on the awesome 'YELP' app for a place for lunch. It came up with the 'Troppo Italian Kitchin.' The lunch menu is a little limited; however there is something for everyone. I need to see the dinner menu as this place has some great food. Welcomed by amiable people and seated promptly. The service was on point and and the prices reasonable given the location in the Capitol. I had the small Filet lunch. I asked how they cook their meet and I was asked how would I like it :) Perfect answer! It came served to a perfect medium for me. The mashed potatoes were amazing! Very creamy with lots of flavors! Mixed with the asparagus, it was a terrific lunch that will most likely be my dinner :) A nice find. I need to come back and try the Chicken Marsala as I heard that was good as well. The only bummer is that they add a 3.5% fee for credit cards!!! That was a surprise. So, next time, cash or debit card. I have been to Troppo 5 times and each time I have been disappointed. This last time will be the absolute last time I go there. Some of their appetizers and soups are good but their main courses are awful. I tried the Ribeye this past weekend and it was terrible. The steak was tough and chargrilled on the outside. Outback and others like it are way better. Do not waste your time at this restaurant. Trust me when I tell you that the chain restaurants are much much better. Service was not very good also. Even if this was less expensive it was still terrible, not even worth half the price. read more

Very inconsistent in terms of food quality and presentation. My first dinner there was not plated properly, the second was great. My first lunch there was terrific, the second came to me lukewarm and it was the special! Even when it was returned, it wasn't hot enough, but at that point I was too hungry to complain again. At this point, I doubt I'll go back--a 50-50 chance of a problematic meal is not inviting. Yes, the butternut squash soup is great, but that's not enough to anchor a good meal. Usually I dont write reviews but I was compelled to warn people of the food quality at this place. Last night I went here for dinner (new to this area). Ambiance was great so was the bartender. I got the roasted tomato soup to start and it was great. But the dinner "pepper crusted ribeye" was by far the worst steak I have ever had. It was a big piece of meat just thrown on the grill and was pressed to have grill marks, for the black pepper crust it had a spoonful of pepper thrown at the center of the steak. We had reservations for early Thursday evening. When we arrived, the place was not busy yet our party of three were seated right across from the busy staging area of the kitchen while prime seating near the windows looking onto Michigan Avneue sat empty the entire time we were there. The music was bizzare, very LOUD, thumping techno strangeness and we had to ask to have it turned down in order to hear each other (which they promptly did). Our waiter was good. The dinner does not include any bread and you will pay extra for soup or salad. Sorry but at these prices, soup/salad should be included and toss in a basket of nice warm bread! My husband asked for a different veggie with his meal as he doesn't care for asparagus and they could not accommodate him (wow, there's NO other veggies back there?!) This was very poor customer service to not accommodate such a simple request! The prices are ridiculously high and while I know this is supposed to be an "upscale" restaurant, there are many other excellent restaurants with better food in Lanisng. Try El Azteco on West Saginaw for great Mexican, or DeLuca's on Willow for the best Italian any where! Save your money and go somewhere else! Dinner last night at Troppo was good for about 5 minutes until they blew off our reservation and seated a party of 10 in front of us. Then strangely they ran out of menus for 4 people and started seating the next few 2 tops that walked in. We asked to be seated without menus and they agreed. We sat there for another 10 minutes before anyone came to the table then our miserable waiter appeared. He was smug, disinterested, unfriendly, appeared every once in a while and laughed at the wrong times so that we felt belittled. To start off with, I never write reviews but I'll make an exception in this case. I've always wanted to try Troppo's and to my everlasting regret, I did. My wife and I met some of her co-workers after work there for drinks and dinner. We arrived in what was a very pleasant evening outdoors and the dishes I saw being served looked mouthwatering. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into some of that delicious looking food! Well, that was about all it was too, just delicious looking! My wife ordered the calamari appetizer and a couple drinks. For myself, I ordered the broccoli cheese soup. Let me tell you, it was not what I expected. This was pureed broccoli with some cheese sprinkled over the top with lots of salt and some spices added for flavor. I ate two spoonsful. My wife said the calamari at Bravo's was much better. After the soup, I decided to play it safe and ordered the $28 New York Strip. I ordered it medium rare. The steak arrived and the plate looked delicious. The potatoes were good but that's where it ended. The steak was barely pink in the middle, not my idea of medium rare! Second, they had a topping on it with what tasted like a blue cheese. I like blue cheese; I put it on salads all the time. This stuff was horrible! A starving dog would have turned its nose up at this stuff! I tried to scrape it off but the flavor was baked into the steak! Good thing I was unable to eat the soup because it might have come back up if I managed to eat the steak. I ordered a diet coke with my meal. I thought "they can't screw this up!" Wrong again! They brought me a tiny 8 oz. bottle of diet coke and they charge you individually for them!!! I'm a 230lb man, give me a full glass! It's pop for crying-out-loud, I can get a big gulp for a dollar! What is this...New York city? I know, it's "trendy" and you go there for the atmosphere...WRONG! My bill came out to just under $90 and I didn't eat hardly anything there. If I pay that much for two meals, I expect to actually like my meal! I went to friggin McDonalds afterwards because I was starving! $4.36 is what I paid for a 10 piece Nugget and a 32oz pop! 32oz...what a concept! I will never go to Troppo's again! We have been looking for an uscale restaurant in Lansing and this was one we heard alot of good things about. The location was terrific, and when we walked in we were pleasantly surprised. We liked the decor and feel, the lighting was nice and the hostess was very attentative. Once we sat down, the waitress immediately came by to order our drinks. She was a little slow in delivering the bottle of wine but was informative and helpful when ordering. We were very impressed with our food: Gnocchi served with sun dried tomatoes, spinach and bacon tossed in olive oil and parmessan was amazing! My husband got the filet with a simple mash. It was nice, but the gnocchi was much more amazing. The only complaint I would have is the waitress never came by to ask if everything was ok after the food was delivered. We saw her after we were done eating. But considering the slim pickings of fine dining places here, I would go back again. read more

Went for lunch yesterday and the menu looked pretty good but pricey, especially for lunch. I ordered the perch sandwich, apple slaw, and a cup of butternut squash soup. The soup came first and didn't even resemble butternut squash. It was brown and tasted like hot applesauce with some butter in it, very strange. The sandwich was good, nice big piece of fish and good tarter sauce. The apple slaw, again completely strange and almost inedible. Moving forward, I'll stick to cocktails at Troppo. read more

I would like to say for one I really enjoyed my time here. In a place like Lancing it is the only spot you can go ,that I know of, and feel like your not still in Lansing. The food is actually portions should be eating and quite delish! However if your going for more food for less price,I wouldnt recommend it. It is a classy place which you could impress any out of state people with as well as nicely lit with a wonderful atmotsphere. I ventured to Troppo with my family for my graduation dinner. We had no complaints about seating or the atmosphere. But ALL of my family members had comments about the food. My family knows I like to Yelp so we were joking about that the whole time, but by the end of the meal we came to the consensus that I needed to write a review. The food did not live up to expectations. The parmesan dinner rolls were really yummy (!!). No complaints about those! We had the appetizer platter with the various offerings- honestly, I can't remember anything good or bad about it. The tomato bisque soup was delightful-- three of us were diving into my boyfriend's bowl. It was so creamy and delicious. But the deliciousness ends there. Now for the fun part. For my dish I ordered the filet medium well- I got a rare, blobby cut that was really something questionable. I just ate around the goopy part. I should've gone with the mac n cheese. The "warm cookies" for dessert were NOT warm. The waitress even informed us upon ordering that the cookies would take about eight minutes to come out... they arrived cold and hard. My mom's gelato was completely tasteless. How disappointing :-( Overall, we were left feeling very underwhelmed. I wouldn't return. Luckily, I moved out of the area. read more

After reading the negative reviews on this place, I decided to try it myself. It definitely does not deserve all the negativity! Came here on a Friday night. It was relatively quiet, but the atmosphere was very nice. We started with two house salads which were light and refreshing. My boyfriend had the salmon two ways--both very good, and I had the chicken piccata which was very tasty and a generous portion. The service could have been better and staff could have been friendlier, but the food came very quickly. All and all we were pleasantly surprised by Troppo and will be returning! read more

Experience: mediocre and mildly annoyed. Paid $23 for a pasta dish that was just okay. Also had a spinach gluten free pasta that was meh, but had visible amount of oil. Service wasn't bad or good. I was there tonight hosting a dinner with case managers. The service was so bad I actually had to remove the appetizer dishes as the waitress served the soup and salad. The filet steak was over cooked; the scallops were cold and the waitress was unable to open the bottle of wine. So sad...you have really gone down hill!!! My steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked at medium rare and one of the best steaks I have ever had!! Everyone in our group ranted about their meal, whether it was steak, seafood, or pasta. Even though the restaurant was obviously busy, the service was attentive and engaging. We were there for a celebration, and felt the staff went out of their way to make it a memorable experience! We hadn't been here for many, many months until recently. They used to have a great selection of appetizers & small dishes. It was perfect to sit in the bar area, order a nice cocktail & a couple of good apps. Now it seems more heavily skewed to fine dining only. So that's disappointing. As others mention, the bar area is really cool, good lighting, colors, seating. The bar itself is large with lots of stools. It's really a perfect place for happy hour so it's too bad their menu is focused on fine dining. They could easily still have some unique upscale appetizers & small plates and add in some cool craft cocktails! That would be something to bring us in to Troppo more often!! read more

I think I had the worst steak in my lifetime, and I've eaten a lot of steak. I ordered the New York Strip and I rate it negative one star. On the other hand, the Chicken Bellagio my friend ordered was really good. The ambiance and atmosphere is really very hip and inviting, it's just a shame the place was barely full on a Saturday night. As for my steak: hard, rubbery, it didn't even taste like a strip steak. It was supposed to have gorgonzola "crust"...but it was smeared on like wet jelly and tasted overpowering. Once I got past the gorgonzola, the steak itself wasn't seasoned. The "peppercorn demi glace" tasted like gravy out of a can...no joke. I can honestly say it was practically not edible. Wow. What a shame. The place is huge. After reading some of the reviews here, my wife and I were uncertain about having dinner at Troppo. However, a couple friends had good things to say so we tried it out. The service was good without being intrusive. I had the Flat Iron steak which was quite good. The marinade had a fairly strong flavor and may not appeal to everyone, but I enjoyed it. This steak comes served on top of "Truffle French Fries". Personally, I wasn't a huge fan. They basically tasted like fries with a small twist. I would have preferred regular mashed potatoes or redskins. Their house salad was tasty as was the house made ranch dressing that I ordered. My wife and I both liked the small, crusty dinner rolls with herbed butter. My wife had the Salmon Two Ways. One piece served with a bbq sauce on top of some sweet potato hash. The other was herb crusted on top of mashed potatoes with a cheese sauce. She raved about it and thought it was excellent. I tried a couple bites of it and while I'm not a huge salmon fan, I thought it was very good. My wife ordered her salad with cherry vinaigrette dressing. Also very excellent. Overall, we were pleased with our meal. The four star rating is due to the fact that I don't hand out 5 star ratings very often. That's reserved for what I view as some of the best food I've ever had. Troppo isn't in that category, but it was a satisfying meal. read more

Very disappointed. I guess I'm used to Chicago restaurants, but this one isn't close. Ate here on April 26, 2012. Appetizers were good, but that is all. Service was slow, my pork chop was under-cooked and actually cool by the time they eventually brought out the entrees, and their credit card hook-up wasn't working when we wanted to leave, resulting in an agonizing delay.
