This place is definitely a hidden gem! My husband loves olive burgers, when I saw reviews for this on Facebook we had to give it a try. It is a bar in the back of a convenience store but it will not disappoint. If you have a big appetite this is the place to try. His olive burger was a half pound and had a great amount of olive sauce. He also ordered gizzards and said they were amazing! I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese and bacon and it was very tasty. I also ordered a half order of fries and it was a full basket! There were definitely left overs to take home. This is the type of dive bar that I dream of stumbling upon. Just outside of Lansing, this bar is a step into a different world. You have to walk through a party store to get to the bar, so that's fun! Beyond that, the burger is one of the best burgers I've ever had. Try the onion rings and get a basket of fries too! This place is the best dive! It's a local place. My brother lives in town but we were visiting from TN and I asked if we could go for dinner. It took a really long time to get the burgers but I think one woman was doing everything -- bartending, serving, cooking, etc. Anyway, the burgers are massive. Hilariously large. And so good. We were served by a very kind, Jovial chap, who allowed me a beer switch at the last second--once I found out they had my favorite that nobody carries--coors banquet stubby bottles! Got drinks & food in no time at all. The atmosphere reminds me of an Upper Peninsula Hunting bar/lodge. Lots of old wood. Rustic-dive-comfort is how I'd describe it. If you're a fussy britches, (KARENS) you will be massively disappointed. If you're an everyday joe who loves a good 'ol dive, this needs a stop NOW, back to the Olive Burger. We stopped in here to eat before an event. We kept seeing the great reviews for the Olive Burger, so we gave it a try. We arrived about 5:15 pm parked, not a lot of spaces. When you walk in there is a little party store then you head back to the bar/restaurant area. We seated ourselves, wait staff brought menus, we ordered 2 olive burgers, 1/2 order of onion rings and small cheese pizza. We then waited an hour for our food. A couple came in after us and got their food before us. Olive burgers are excellent but big and could have been split by two. The pizza was tasteless and dough was not cooked thoroughly. Despite the long wait for our food and the poor service, there are other things we would like to try. But will go after lunch and before dinner hour. read more

Recently tried Riley Tavern after it being recommended by a friend. There is a welcoming bar and then a large lawn with out buildings for event. There are several picnic tables and dogs are welcome. The pizza we ordered came promptly and was excellent!. Be sure to try it. You will love the thin and crisp pizza crust as well as the great sauce. Cheese is crisp which is what I prefer. read more

This is a true old-time rural tavern frequented by locals. It is pretty rough looking on the outside-- lots of muddy pick up trucks parked in the dirt parking lot. You walk through a small convenience store to get to the tavern where there are maybe a dozen tables and a bar that seats 10 people. Honestly we were a bit out of our comfort zone but that was quickly changed when the fabulous server/ bartender/cashier/greeter named Steve came over to greet us. His exuberant friendliness put us at ease. We went to South Riley's on our ongoing quest to find the best area olive burger, and they did not disappoint! The sesame buns are homemade and delicious. The olive sauce is bountiful and full of olives. The half-pound burger could have used a bit more seasoning and they only cook burgers well-done, so it could have been a bit juicier. The fries and onion rings were hot and crispy and very good. It was definitely worth the drive! read more

Ate here the other day. Had a pound of gizzards. Asked the cook about breading. He said he could do it anyway I wanted. Having experienced the very heavy breading of Joe's gizzard city, I asked for light breading. Also had a half order of fries. Lots of fries! The gizzards were lightly breaded as requested. The gizzards had been boiled previously and were soft. Good taste but I prefer chewy. Fries were good and from frozen, lightly coated, not seasoned, probably potato flour to make them crispy. Took gizzards and fries home. I prefer old fashioned hand cut. Saw the olive burger. It looked great. Overall good food. read more

I ordered a mushroom and swiss burger here, and while the presentation was spectacular, the cheese was the fake processed stuff which I can't stand. I should have asked when I ordered whether or not it was real, but I didn't (lesson learned). I usually question whether or not the mayo mentioned in the description is real mayo and not salad dressing, but this time I just got it on the side instead of questioning the waitress (we were a big group and I didn't want to waste time asking a bunch of questions). I'm happy to report that the mayo is real, but it still didn't disguise the fact that the cheese wasn't. My husband and I split the burger and after a couple of bites I gave him my share, I just couldn't eat it. We also ordered gizzards. Our gizzards looked like they came from the bottom of the fryer and were just little bits and pieces while everyone else's looked beautiful. Adding insult to injury we had to wait more than an hour and forty five minutes to receive our entire meal as it came out in bits and pieces. Would we go back? This tavern is so hard to describe because it is surreal. The burgers were delicious and just as described in previous reviews. They were almost a meal in themselves but we split an order of onion rings which was a very generous portion, perfectly crisp and tender. We were there at lunchtime so we weren't necessarily going for adult beverages but I asked for a vodka tonic and George, the owner, operator of the party store, bar and cook said they didn't have tonic water. I would say that your best bet would be to stick with beer, Budweiser most likely. The establishment has the feel of an upper peninsula local bar and the people that were there were from the area- a farmer on a lunch break and another couple who helped themselves to beer in the cooler behind the counter with George's permission. George, the owner was friendly and it was an enjoyable experience. Now for the surreal, the reviews note that the tavern is hard to find and that would be an understatement. It is in the country with no business nearby. It looks like an old abandoned factory or pole barn, complete with a for sale sign in the front. You walk through the pert store to get to the bar. The party store itself is very minimally stocked with no name brands of alcohol. While we may go again, it seems like the party store/bar is for locals only which I'm pretty sure is how the owner and patrons like it. read more

As someone else said, just because I gave it five stars doesn't mean it's a Michelin restaurant. As a matter of fact, I'm guessing the owners don't even know what a Michelin restaurant is, and that suits me just fine. We drove by this place without even realizing it was a restaurant. From the outside, it looks more like a pole barn (a decidedly Midwest thing), so keep an eye out. When you walk in, you realize it's a party store... and not a well-stocked one at that. Beyond the party store is the restaurant, which consists of 1980's-era tables, a long straight bar, wood paneling, and miscellaneous beer mirrors advertising the latest NASCAR phenom. But the food. Oh my God, the food. It's dive bar food, with big greasy 1/2 pound burger patties, real cheese, real mayo, and perfectly crispy fries. We've also had the chicken wings (very good, but not write-home-to-your-mom good), and the nachos (which were amazing). I don't rate Riley with 5 stars to imply that it is a fine dining establishment. It's a total dive and in that context I give it 5 stars, mostly for the burgers. I've only eaten the burgers and they please me greatly when I'm really hungry. These are half pound beasts. Today I ordered the "monster burger" which comes with cheese, bacon, mushrooms, tomato, lettuce and mayo. Impossible to eat without multiple paper towels, but quite delicious. My lovely wife ordered the olive burger. Also a destroyer of napkins. It comes with a massive quantity of olive sauce which is heavily laced with green olives. I finished my burger but my wife couldn't defeat hers. I was bloated to say the least. We got one order of fries to split but gave up on finishing them. One order of these could likely take care of four burger eaters pretty easily. It's a very casual and relaxed place that seems to be kept busy by the locals. Cold beer flows as freely as you want it to and the staff is pleasant to deal with. One of the bigger challenges lies in finding the tavern to begin with. If you haven't been there before, pay close attention to the map or your GPS. It's on Francis Rd, just north of Cutler Road (east side of the road). The building has zero external markings. Just kind of looks like an old house with a gravel parking lot. When you walk in you are in a super small convenience store. Keep walking past the counter and you will find yourself in South Riley tavern. When it's busy, it can be hard to find a table. We got the last one available when we arrived, but the place quieted down in short order. If you want a pretty dang good burger in a very down to earth environment, this is your place. read more

South Riley Tavern has been rumored to have the best burgers around. After hearing about it for more than a decade, I finally found my way to this middle-of-nowhere destination. I had high hopes walking in based on the praise they've received. Much to my surprise, because rarely does anything live up to its hype, South Riley surpassed my expectations. The beers are cold and the burgers were great! The burger was a rare combination of quality, mass and value. $7.50 for a 1/2lb bacon cheeseburger? YES, PLEASE!!! :) The only downside was the wait time, but its to be expected both based on the reviews and that they're operating out of a small kitchen. Totally worth the drive and the wait, though. No regrets. No complaints. Will absolutely be back with intentions of trying their highly regarded chicken gizzards. read more

Weirdest place ever. From the outside you can't tell if it's a warehouse or a sketchy biker gang's club house, who needs a sign? You walk in and find yourself in a dumpy little party store. You wonder how it can even be in business, then you notice the door straight ahead of you. Inside is the South Riley Tavern. The tables and chairs were collected over the years from other places that closed, at least that's what it looks like, nothing matches. The bar has an extremely cool antique tap setup and a bunch of old cooler doors behind the bartender. Pretty big menu, but you're here for burgers and fries. The burgers are amazing. The fires are cooked just right. But let's get back to the burgers. Huge, delicious, worth the weirdness of the location. If you are picky about places being all new and fancy, this isn't for you. If you want a place that is spotless and shiny, this isn't for you. The staff is not going to coddle you, be prepared to wonder if you're bothering them. You're not, it's all part of the "sit down, order your damn food, what beer ya drinkin'" ambiance. Worth the visit. read more
