We were looking for a spot that was open on Thanksgiving Day to watch the Lions game and after calling a few other spots with no luck, Stober's answered! We walked in and were greeted with a long communal table all set up with a tablecloth - they do a Thanksgiving potluck each year and there were a ton of people there already. We luckily got a booth with some good views of the few TVs they have and the crowd was friendly and all decked out in Lions gear. The bartender was super friendly and let us know that the food would be ready in about an hour. It's free to eat as much as you want, and they had TONS of food, including at least 3 turkeys, lots of sides, desserts, and it looked like they were setting up for a mac and cheese competition. I kept saying how nice it was to have this spot for the community and it really felt very welcoming. I love the ornate bar, with the stained glass and big wooden griffins (we think they're griffins anyway). It's such a cool place and if I lived nearby I think I'd want to be a regular here. It's always nice to feel welcomed in a townie bar like this and I think we have a new Thanksgiving tradition! read more

We were there when they weren't too crowded. We have driven up before and seen that it's so crowded people are just loitering about outside. In a perfect world, a bar of historic importance like Stober's would be easy to find wherever you happen to be. But it's not a perfect world, so we'll have to settle for a description my perfect evening of a nightcap after a light dinner while traveling to this part of the country for the first time. I saw the sign a few blocks from my hotel and made a mental note to check it out. Glad I did. The interior of the bar, the signage, the gorgeous display over the back bar is simply stunning. But it doesn't stop there. It's a great selection, and my server could not have been nicer. A couple of bar patrons greeted me on my way in to the far end of the bar from the entrance. So happens I sat right in front of the single malt whisky selection. I paused... yes, that doesn't happen by chance, and a shot of Lagavulin, neat, followed. I paid and gave a nice tip, then asked about someone smaller than a pint of Guinness to accompany it. A pint is just too much for this guy, so the bartender poured a very small glass of the black goodness and said "no charge." Wow, a perfect meal elsewhere, then this stunning bar that is like few you're ever going to see (is it 100 years old??? don't know). The patrons were just chatting, nothing unruly, people were friendly, but there was no out of control anything. Reminded me of pubs in Ireland where the destination was more for camaraderie than people getting drunk and being obnoxious--what happens in most pubs we've all frequented. Well, how can I find a way to be back in the part of the country again? If I do I know the plan. Very highly recommended. A rare gem of an experience. read more

I was lost in Lansing and saw a sign that said oldest bar in Lansing, so I had to turn around and check it out. They have great parking l, friendly staff, cold beer, and one of the most beautiful bars I've ever seen. I don't know Ben know if they had food just had one beer and left. Loved the original woodwork here and the air hockey board. It was decorated for Halloween and looked really cool. I tried a Dark Cherry Ale, and was blown away. I wish I could get this drink where I live. This is one of the oldest bars in the MI area and is worth a quick visit for a local brew and a quick game of air hockey and some tunes on the Jukebox. read more

Cool place if you like dimly lit dive bars. Was visiting for my son's basketball tournament. Walked in with my wife and was immediately greeted by some friendly locals They welcomed us and told us the jukebox is free lol. You can play anything you want and they love it. Last night an old friend and I decided to catch up for a drink, Stober's was the bar of choice! I've been to Stober's on a few occasions, enjoyed the drinks and the shuffleboard table very much! Unfortunately this most recent experience has left a sour taste in my mouth. We stayed in the parking lot before we went in around 1 am, we were able to find a table just fine. The place wasn't too crowded or loud and the vibe seemed great! Not more than 5 minutes later my male friend approached the bar as it was time for drinks! He no sooner gets to the bar and was groped by someone also visiting the bar tonight. Regardless of the experiences I've had, I don't think going to Stober's will be my choice or a safe space for me, and I found out just now that this happened. I couldn't say this could've have been prevented, the bar staff was very busy and I'm not sure who saw or who would have expected this. Or that I would not have caused an absolute scene had I known while we were there. I DO hope no one ever has to experience a disgustingly uncomfortable interaction like that, especially at a bar where you should be able to let your guard down. read more

This place has amazing reviews but I'm not sure why. Either the owner or some employee was a compete ass hole. Started off when we were in line to show the bouncer our ID and this lady comes out of nowhere saying "get the fuck out of the way!!" Pushing me and my girlfriend to the side. We have never been the stobers and this is the first interaction we have with employees!?! Like come on that is unacceptable. Beyond that this same lady was spotted shoulder checking another young woman as she exited the bathroom while the employee was entering. If I lived in Lansing this would be one of the my regular bars. With not just one shuffleboard table but two pristine well taken care of full length tables this is a great spot to tip a few back with friends. They have a raised seating section shuffleboard adjacent that's nice to sequester your group into if you're meeting a few tables worth of peeps. They made a decent, let's call it a Manhattan Fashion, service was quick, patrons were drunkenly friendly, the guy's bathroom was divebar clean and they have the coolest wood dragon sculpture and also a pretty sweet stained-glass piece behind the bar, both worth coming to see. read more

Let me just start by saying that Stobers has always felt like home to me, being a life long resident of Lansing and the surrounding area for 35 years, it has a special place in my heart and I've gained many memories here over the years. On that note, I cannot continue to patronize this establishment. The last 2 occasions friends and I have come in we have been treated by the Bartender on shift Kristen awfully. She has been rude, aggressive, belittling, condescending, vulgar, and downright abusive to not only myself, my group of friends, but other customers at the bar. Stober's is my go-to Lansing bar. The staff is friendly and attentive even when it's super busy. They have a decent selection of craft beers and a classic dive bar selection of strong, cheap drinks and domestic beer. The place is usually pretty clean, just don't look TOO close. It's very dim in there, and it's a dive bar. I suppose a solid layer of dust is to be expected! They don't serve food, but they have a variety of takeout menus to peruse. This place is odd. First, I want to say that it's gorgeous. The hand-carved bar, with the Merlin stained glass and glowing-eye griffins, is really quite impressive and it's kind of a shame it's too dimly lit to get a good look at the woodwork. And the jukebox has a wide range of excellent music, including Gnarls Barkley and Primus. The drinks are usually good and not too watered down, and hey, shuffleboard. But this place is...odd. Because I can never be sure whether it will be beautiful hipster or racist redneck night. I might as well flip a coin. My first experience here was during a bar crawl the night Michigan went smokefree. This place is notoriously smoke-filled and would not have been a place I would ever go. Loved the indoor shuffleboard, the handcarved bar, gargoyles and beautiful stained glass. The owners had some anti-smokefree law things posted on the wall so I didn't exactly feel welcome here. At which point I didn't turn around to acknowledge and instead offered a thumb's up and continued out the door. Her loudly voiced assumption - she asked the patrons if I flipped her off. As far as dives go, this place is a blast. I won't lie, I was won over, 100%, by the awesome bar; the bar is wood, with an amazing phoenix carved into the woodwork above the liquor and some fantastic stained glass elsewhere. The bar is a bit dark (which is normal in a dive bar. They had no craft beer (not even one). They had some shuffle board tables. The waiters were friendly. Stobers rocks. I feel in love with this bar last summer, when it wasn't crowded. I have continued as a patron regardless of the crowds. It gets packed on Friday-Sunday. If you go on a Monday or Tuesday night you will get the chill atmosphere that made me fall in love with it. The bar tenders know how to pour, and love it enough to show up on nights they have off. I tend to go here with my co-workers after a long night's work. We always get great drinks, if it's too much alcohol (as with my Rangpur) as for a small glass of juice on the side. Shuffleboard with strangers is a must, as well as the jukebox. The booths are big enough for 6 to squeeze in, the small lounge area in back good for making out (as I've witnessed a few times), and the bartenders are always nice to look at. Check out the bar, Merlin and don't forget to give the dog a dollar. My only downside is there is no food- I need food when I drink. Pickles just don't cut it. read more
