Looking for something new we decided to order some takeout from Trio's, having never been there. When we walked in we realized we made a mistake....we should have dined in. The restaurant looked cozy and inviting , has a sit down bar area...and the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. What about the food, you ask? Deee-licious! What is your ideal place to have a business meeting? I recently had a rendezvous (fancy word for meeting) at this Gem ! Located minutes away from Carolina Place mall. After experiencing delicious menu items, I was left in awe finding out Trio opened back in January of 1992! The atmosphere is comparable to visiting a local dining area in Hilton Head Island, SC. Pictured below is what I indulged in. The buttermilk fried chicken was extremely juicy and flavorful and the Belgium waffles were out of this world scrumptious! At the introduction of this post I mentioned having a meeting at this Gem. My business partner and I were privileged to have met one of Trio's managers. Emma is extremely friendly and even agreed for us to utilize the patio for an upcoming project we are collaborating on (stay tuned) My business partner indulged in the deliciousness pictured below. We waited an unusually long time to be seated for lunch. Another couple in front of us were surprised as well that no one was at the front reception desk. A good 20 minutes passed before a waitress acknowledged us. Ambience is gone. The decor screams 'make me pretty again!' It's old & dated. Waitress was friendly & attentive. Menu seems varied enough leaning heavily towards Italian. I had the Mulligatawny soup which was tasty with a slight 'kick.' Husband had 'Soup of the Day,' which was a vegetable chicken. We both enjoyed each. We asked for a cup but got their bowl. And were charged for the larger. I ordered the Shrimp & Scallops over angel hair pasta. My husband had the Balsamic Chicken salad. Mine was divine. Just enough seasoning and cooked to perfection. BUT the portion was small. So small that I left hungry. Very generous shrimp & scallops but so little pasta. Twenty-two dollars and I was still hungry. That was disappointing. I inquired if this portion was the same for dinner and our waitress sadly said, "yes." It was a child's portion of pasta. My husband liked his salad and was satisfied with his portion. A full chicken breast as well as a generous amount of mixed greens. His was $16. I would recommend the food BUT be prepared to have room for dessert whether you want it or not. Question: will we return? Food was good, very good. But that portion was so disappointing. I love Trios we go often an it's been a great place to always have my birthday party. They have brick oven pizza that is perfect for one. Love the sweet potato home made chips with blue cheese. Service is always perfect an food delish. They have a house dressing you must try Killer Dressing yes that's it's name . I can't explain its a light creamy dressing they make great on their salads. My dad loves their meat loaf, a great place for brunch as well. Again I asked for a roll an because I had pizza an half salad it doesn't come with it SMH its gonna be some time before I go back . Its not MCdonalds or BK not chso I expect good service an my order right. If rolls are expensive for them than they need to start stating that on their menu. Not the best. I have been here many times and food is always consistent and service has been good. However, tonight our food was cold and my dad's fish was very over cooked. Our liquor drinks weren't very good either. Also, I think it took over 45 minutes for the cold food to come out. The service was lackluster at best and all they did was offer a free dessert, which we didn't want to sit and wait on. Surprised no manager came out to talk to me either. I get you maybe short staffed due to Covid/holidays but you can do better. Very disappointed since I took my folks out to dinner after a very delayed flight. I don't live near Trio. I don't even live in NC. In fact, I'll likely never make it back to the area. However, when the food, service, and prices are THAT good... they deserve a pat-on-the-back. FOOD: Great brick oven pizza. Wonderful Chicken Parm. I asked for extra sauce - but it didn't need it (take note; Carrabba's!). My table ordered a bunch of different items and everyone was pleased. I only wish I could have tried the pot-pie too! Oh, and my wife loved her baked Alaska. SERVICE: Competent. Kind. Attentive. A real person - not putting on a show. BONUS: Our waitress made is very clear that the tip was already added to the bill. She even circled it in red on our check. Many servers don't say a peep and hope to get double-tipped. In appreciation for her hard work we added an extra $20. PRICES: Very affordable. Bottles of wine that weren't marked up 3x. Large entrees for $14. Really good lunch at a long time favorite. I've always enjoyed everything I've had at Trios. I joined two friends for lunch and we all enjoyed the food and conversation. We had no reservations, but we were able to get seated with no issue during the lunch hour. I had their DELICIOUS Mulligatawny Soup and a Burger with Blue Cheese. My husband and I always enjoy coming here. Don't let the building fool you. While it feels like you're stepping back to the 90s, the service is excellent. And it's quiet enough and tables are spaced out enough to where you can have a conversation. I had the Mediterranean shrimp and scallops with pesto orzo. While the shrimp were tasty, the flavor of the orzo was the star. It was creamy and savory with just the right amount of sun-dried tomatoes and olives. Oh and the food comes out fast. Dessert is my favorite. The mocha pecan ice cream is amazing and this is the only restaurant that serves it. We tried to get a server to track it down for us, but It's a special flavor made only for Trio. We went to Trio on a Friday evening as part of a group. In short, I'd give the food 4 stars and the service 2 stars. Our meal consisted of all starters. Their crisp calamari was very good. The sweet pepper jelly, banana peppers, & sriracha aioli works well with the calamari. My wife had the baby green salad and said it was excellent. I tried the fried cheese ravioli special. It was OK. The ravioli mostly filled with air and was short on filling. Service: Poor. While our waitress was friendly, she was not attentive. I never got offered another beer (they lost a sale) and my water was never refilled. I.e., after our initial service, our server was scarce, except to bring with the check. Not only did they take such good care of us, they went out of their way to make sure all 26 guest were treated like royalty. Now, I can only speak for myself but the food was amazing. This actually turned out to be a pretty good place for a girls brunch! Their brunch menu isn't that extensive but the prices are just right! I went with the shrimp and grits which comes with collard greens...yep, I said collards!!! The shrimp were seasoned very well and not overcooked at all! First time trying Trio, based on google reviews thought it would nice and different. Well, it was certainly different. Walking in I felt very odd, like a black dot on a white cloth, but we stayed. The host was taking us to the booth until one of the managers snatched the menus from her and told us we could not sit there. She then sat a white couple at the table, still we stayed. I'm grateful we did, our server was amazing, attentive and fun. The food was fresh, tasty and great portion sizes.
