We went during Mardi Gras and the atmosphere was cute. We arrived sort of early on Saturday (5pm), which was good because it quickly became a bit busy. We had the Fried Green Tomatoes, the DSG salad, Tricky Fish with Redfish and the Shrimp Bourbon linguine. Every bite was DELISH!! I also had the Pineapple Mule and it was the best mule I've had in a while, just the right balance between the vodka and fruit, so not too strong, but not weak either. The only catch was the service. Everyone we interacted with was very pleasant, but we had like 3 different folks take our orders and bring out the food. It was hard to tell who our exact server was. Now that may be their typical rotation which is fine, but it was new to us. With that though, we had a very long wait between being seated and ordering drinks and a pretty long wait between ordering our dessert and receiving it. That took so long in fact, the manager removed it from our bill, which was really nice of him. Like I said the actual folks were great and the food was fantastic, so we'll definitely be back!! Solid dinner experience, and family friendly. I enjoyed the food, service and casual dinning experience. Ordered the Blackened Redfish w/ Tricky Fish - included crawfish etouffee, dirty rice, and okra. The food was savory, but didn't have the spice kick I would expect from a Cajun food. The service was excellent and added some heat with hot sauce. The wine was also half off on Wednesday, so a nice bonus for my meal out. Tricky Fish is a great place to dine solo or with a group of friends! I enjoy it so much. The managers, waitresses, and waiters are so welcoming and friendly. Dining in or ordering out, the food is ALWAYS great. If there is a mistake, everyone is ready to help rectify the issue. Next time I'll have to take a picture because I don't waste no time indulging. Today was a good day. We ventured out to a new catfish place and we were pleasantly surprised but the quality and ambiance of this place. This is a chain, I think locally owned with locations around the northern part of Dallas. This was our first visit but will not be our last. We went to their location in Preston hollow shopping center on walnut hill. This is what we liked about the place. 1. The price is right for 2 without alcohol including tip was under $50 2. The ambiance is clean with great sight line to their TV which had the March Madness in full swing. 3. The service was good not great but on Friday nights we were still happy because we were in and out in a hour. 4. The food was a 10. I got the catfish and shrimp platter. It was fried to perfection with a light batter that did not hide the fish. My wife got the etouffee which said was very flavorful. Bottom line we would both order our meals again. My only criticism is that the cement floors and high ceilings make the place noisy. However we would still go back and eat there again. Love it.. read more

In a era where bad service is common, we were pleasantly surprised to receive EXCELLENT service. Paul, our server, gave great recommendations and was conversational. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was a nice balance of casual and charming. We were so pleased with the food and service we will be back. Tricky Fish was highly enjoyable and is recommended. We ended up trying it off of the strength of someone's recommended and it did not disappoint. It's located in the State Farm City-line area which is in Richardson. The restaurant is surrounded by other eateries and a small park which makes for great entertainment in that area. Upon arriving, I was able to get a parking spot right in front of the restaurant. All spots were 2 Hour Parking for your convenience and enjoyment. Upon walking in we were immediately greeted. We arrived there around 6 pm and the patio area was kind of empty. We were seated inside in a booth. The restaurant was really clean and a warm inviting decor. We didn't wait long before we were greeted by our server and provided menus. Food/drinks: I ordered a Lime in the Coco mule which was very good! The coconut and lime were a good mix to make for a refreshing drink. My friend had a Filthy Pineapple mule which she enjoyed. We ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. All I can say is YUMMY! They were fried perfectly and had the perfect firmness. As a bonus, they were topped with crawfish and a nice drizzle. Amazing! I ordered blackened mahi mahi tricky fish (comes with rice, fried okra and topped with a crawfish gravy. Yall...I can't even describe the flavors. It was amazing. The fried okra is not your average fried okra. My mom and friend had the fried platter. They really enjoyed their food as well. Service: Carlisle was SPECTACULAR! He earned every bit of the tip he received. He was user knowledgeable of the menu, always kept our drinks refilled and made sure we had everything we needed without asking. The manager even walked around to ensure all patrons were good and were enjoying our meals. Nice touch. COVID: all employees were wearing masks and cleaned thoroughly between guests. Bonus: there are wall outlets in the booths in case your phones or tablets for kids need to be charged. They also have a large bar table area that can accommodate larger parties. There is patio seating that filled up quickly by the time we had eaten and was leaving. They also have a touchless payment option on the receipt that you can use to avoid the handling of your debit/credit card. Tricky Fish is a favorite of mine. It's small enough to enjoy a good conversation and good food. It's not pretentious and the servers are warm, friendly, and helpful. Their cocktails are delicious and satisfying. I didn't feel as though I was pay for a pretty fruit drink with no liquor. I had boiled shrimp which was presented beautifully. The shrimp was fresh , tasty, and worth it. I also had the shrimp po-boy. I wanted seafood during the height of the pandemic and was happy that this place was opened. I ordered the salmon with dirty rice and okra and a fried green tomato appetizer. Everything was so delicious!! I really loved the okra. I'm not sure how they got it to have that level or crispness but it's superb. The fried green tomatoes were also excellent. Much better dinner tonight with server Jennifer and we made sure to order the rosters and they were very delicious and we had the mac & cheese with grilled shrimp and that was super good. The Romain the Caesar salad is one big head of romaine lettuce and we got it with grilled shrimp so we just had to order an extra side of dressing and I really liked the grilled okra. Was finally able to take this gem off my bookmarks! Service was excellent. Omg there Mac and cheese is amazing and super creamy!! I had there hot chicken sandwich and it was great and my daughter had a shrimp Po boy and it was packed with shrimp and she loved the tartar sauce which usually she skips. I tried the fish and chips and the jumbo shrimp cooked the tricky way. The fish and chips was phenomenal and the tartar sauce was fantastic; definitely one of the best that i've had. I wish the fish was more of a tender rather than a filet because then I can get more of that delicious breading. The fries were also really flavorful and fresh. Mac and cheese was not bad, pretty solid. The shrimp (I got it blackened) was yummy and tasted very fresh but I would have preferred for the sides to have been more light, everything was salty and I wished there was more balance. My crawfish etouffee came cold which made me sad. We also ordered the calamari for appetizer but I guess our server just forgot to add it to the tab so I didn't get to try that; maybe next time. One of the best bites of the year, Tricky Fish is somewhere I would love to go back to every time I'm in Dallas. Portions are big, decor and ambiance are on point, friendly staff and most importantly, terrific food (seafood at that!) at a friendly price point. Tricky Fish has a few plates including the namesake Tricky Fish that is a must get. My wife got the tilapia tricky fish and it was amazing. Nice big piece of fish, super flavorful crawfish etoufee and dirty rice that's not overly salty make for a great meal already. But the real star? That OKRA. The only time I've enjoyed okra is in it's deep fried form, but Trick Fish's take on the vegetable is mind blowing. Roasted and charred to a crisp, the okra has new life in it's texture and flavor. By far one of the best vegetables I've eaten in my life. They also got an assortment of sandwiches, which are pretty hefty in portion with the fries (they give a LOT of fries). Soft roll, fried oyster po boy is a different take on a classic and while the sandwich wasn't certainly good enough, it is pretty average compared to the fish plates, so I would opt for that instead next time. Definitely going to be a new regular fixture when I come back to Dallas! read more

The staff here are very friendly and attentive. I left Jaspers a few doors down as they didn't seem to want to accommodate a single business diner, and walked into Tricky Fish where i got fantastically attentive service from the minute I walked in the door. The food, oh the food- don't let the casual atmosphere fool you. The bisque, grilled fish, drinks, and desserts could easily be served in a fine dining restaurant. Yes. It's that good. Food was really good and I was happy to see they were open pretty late on a weekday, which I appreciated. I ordered the Salmon with etoufee on top and a side of fried shrimp. The Salmon didn't come out cooked medium-well as requested, so they had to take it back, but it didn't take too long to be corrected. Once it was though, I slaughtered the food. I am an okra fan but I have never had "whole" okra fried or roasted or whatever they do to theirs, but it was really good. I was actually surprised I was able to eat it whole and I didn't start to overthink it because lets be honest, okra is slimy and sometimes has hard stems in them that make them non-chewable so I feel "cut" okra may reduce some of those issues (lol), but I bit into it and was pleased by not only the flavors they seasoned it with, but also the fact that is wasn't overly slimy and I didn't had to spit out one stem. Win for them.... The fried shrimp were good and although "I" didn't see lemonade on the menu, they brought me one and it was really good. They brought the order to the table wrong and then proceeded to joke around with another table before correcting my meal, which took 25 minutes to come with an empty restaurant. The food and service was great!! I am so glad we stopped here on our way to Plano from Houston. Sure, we have seafood restaurants here that are just as good but to have EVERYTHING you order taste like yummy goodness, yep, I'd drive back. The creamy Mac and cheese was seasoned to perfection! Came here for happy hour. I ordered the Old Fashioned. This is normally my litmus test to see how good a bar tender is. Our tender was very friendly and attentive. I was very impressed with her Old Fashioned. She used a blood orange rind, and actual cube of clean, clear ice, Woodford Reserve, the correct amount of simple syrup, and bitters. It was delicious. We also had some apps. Blue cheese potato crisps, calamari, and fresh oysters. Well, the only reason I'm not giving this establishment 5/5 stars are because of the oysters. They weren't as fresh. We had a perfectly lovely experience here! We were seated promptly by their friendly staff. We had the pleasure of having Daniel for our server and he made our visit extra special. He was polite and fun and he gave us excellent recommendations when we asked for them. We were delighted with our meals and have included photos. We absolutely could not have asked for more. We thought the prices were reasonable. In addition, the atmosphere is very romantic sitting outside in the evening with twinkle lights lining the street. There is even live music coming from a courtyard a block or so away on Friday and Saturday nights. The area is safe and people were strolling down the street enjoying the evening. I start this review with one word--amazing!! From the food, to the service, to the atmosphere everything here is nothing short of amazing. A group of us met up for a get together and the staff was super accommodating, attentive, and kind. I could not decide between brunch and dinner, so I asked the server and she was super helpful and honest. I ended up getting their refreshing and strong paloma to sip on and their tilapia with potato hash and veggies to eat. Omg, the tilapia was super flavorful with a nice hint of butter and spices. Also the veggies had that same spice and were oh so delicious! I got a chance to try their okra, seafood pasta, and hash! Wow, wow, and wow again! All of my senses just came to life with each bite!
