First time / Last time What a disappointment.  Two of five people there for lunch at 12:30 and we should have used that as a signal to walk out, but stayed out of curiosity.  Priced for cloth napkins and tablecloths, but that was yet another signal to leave.  The real issue was the food and its complete lack of flavor.  Again, we should have walked.  It was a waste of time and money and now we know why the parking lot was empty.  Never again. read more

I was driving down the street to pick a friend up to go somewhere else and I saw the sign from Preston and at the light looked up the menu and that's how we ended up here last Wednesday. I didn't feel dressed up enough to dine but the waist staff said it was cool and the service was excellent. I ordered a rib eye and a glass of wine and thoroughly enjoyed my time at Nelson's. What a fabulous find! Went here with work friends and left knowing we will be back, whenever possible! First, definitely try the Elk (recommended by the server) it was so tender, juicy, flavorful and perfect texture. My friends had the filet and the strip - both gave rave reviews! We started with the lobster dip and homemade chips - love! I got a small wedge salad with great blue cheese dressing. For sides - highly recommend the sweet potato mash, outstanding Mac and cheese and seriously yummy cream corn. Wednesdays are 1/2 price wine night and they have a solid selection of mostly California based wines. We also indulged in a couple smoked old fashioned which I do recommend too! Frankly all was delicious, service was great - if I had notes to give - consider adding a little background music for ambiance. read more

My family had a very nice time dining here. It has a casual feel, yet it still has a bit of upscale touch too. This makes it a more family friendly atmosphere. Food is a little more upscale and drinks were very good. Service was perfect. Not too hovering but still nicely attentive. They do nice job on Dirty Martinis. My wife and I are regulars at Nelson's. Always consistently great food and drinks. The lobster bisque is fantastic with large chunks of lobster in a rich, creamy broth. The salmon is great and always cooked to perfection. Try the elk tenderloin, it's great. The blue cheese wedge is one of my favorites and only $7. We hadn't been to Nelson's for a long time, but decided to eat early dinner there Tuesday evening. The positive Yelp reviews were our motivation. There were no other customers, but we were greeted immediately by a man (probably the owner). The restaurant was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. A female server came by after our food was served, checking to make sure everything was good for us. A reviewer had mentioned that the fried okra was delicious - it certainly was! My husband had been craving catfish; I had the chicken-fried chicken with homemade mashed potatoes and cream gravy. Both entrees were excellent! He had dessert after dinner; I opted for an Espresso Martini - both of us enjoyed our choices. Two men came in for dinner shortly before we left the restaurant. We don't understand why Nelson's isn't busier because we certainly had no complaints whatsoever. read more

WHY IS NO ONE HERE?!?!?! We drive into Dallas yesterday to visit our daughter for her birthday. This was one of the top-rated places on my Yelp search, so I called them up and made a reservation. We get there and the place is ..... almost DEAD??? I began to worry if I had chosen well. Let me just say, I most definitely did choose well!!! Let's get into it. Atmosphere: Extremely clean and bright interior. White with black accents throughout. Looked like a nice patio area as well. 1 Star Service: Jason was our waiter, and apparently the waiter for the night. He had all five of the tables when we walked in and when we left it was down to two. We never wanted for a thing or even had to wait. He replaced our glass napkins with every single fill up. He replaced our silverware after our appetizers. He cleaned off the table for us twice. When we asked for substitutions, he was more than happy to accommodate. I even asked to replace my Cream Gravy with the Pepper Gravy. His response was, "I'll bring you both and let you decide which is better, because the Cream Gravy is wonderful." And then when he brought my entree, it only had the Pepper Gravy and he said the were making a new batch of the cream gravy for me, because the other batch was made earlier in the evening. And when it was done he promptly brought me a steaming cup of fresh gravy. He was extremely polite, and not just with our table, each table seemed to be carrying on conversations with him. Great waiter. As we walked in to the establishment we were greeted by no fewer than 3 people and the same as we were leaving, thanking us for our business. Top notch service. 2 Stars Food: I'm just gonna jump straight into my favorite, and that was the Fried Okra. So hot and crispy!!! I mean down to the very last one. I could have eaten an entire plate of just the okra. Ok, with that out of the way, here is the rest of the meal. We started off with the Shrimp poppers. There were 6 JUMBO shrimp stuffed with cheese and a strip of Serrano pepper, then wrapped in bacon. If you have more than 4 people I highly encourage getting a second one of these because they were delicious and everyone will want at least two. Three of us ordered a cup of the lobster bisque and we let none go to waste. There was lots of lobster in each bowl as well. I ordered a half order of the "Nelson" house salad to have before my meal as well. We ended up splitting it between three of us, easily. Delicious. We did opt for the Italian dressing over the ranch. Now on to the entrees. First up were the Fish Tacos, which were made with catfish fillets, which is a new one for us. My wife loved them. She got the fries which are like the shoestring fries from other places. Daughter got the 4 piece fried shrimp plate and also loved them. Son ordered the Catfish and Fried Shrimp combo with those amazing okra. He is our picky eater and there was nothing left. I wrangled around several choices but I had just eaten steak the night before, so I decided to go with the Chicken Fried Chicken. As I said with the gravy, I ended up getting both and they were equally amazing. I split the whole, very crispy and juicy, chicken between both types of gravy. The mashed potatoes were perfect; firm but fluffy without being dry. I ordered another portion of the okra to go with my meal. 2 Stars Overall: I am completely befuddled. The previous reviews all highly praise the food and service. The location is great. The building is beautiful both outside and inside. This is a place that I would expect to need a a reservation for, and yet it was half empty. I've noticed now that a couple of other reviewers noticed the same thing, but also had raving reviews. Addison and Dallas people, GO TO THIS PLACE!!! Support it. It's delicious, fairly priced, and bright and inviting. I would like to return the next time we drive back in town. Keep this place healthy. Make me have to make a reservation to get in. And by all means, order a couple of plates of that amazing okra!!! 5 Stars without hesitation. read more

This might be one of the best kept secrets in Dallas! Fantastic meal and the price was right. We started with the deviled eggs and a house salad.. and let me tell you, the house salad is no joke. Brimming with bacon, cheese and a flavorful blue cheese dressing (my choice) I was very surprised! All the veggies were fresh and delicious! The deviled eggs were so good, again with bacon, and a nice pickle relish! Chef kiss delish! I had the steak frites, just the 6oz, cooked to perfection! Highly recommend this if you aren't starving and want a nice steak! My friend had the meatloaf and raved! This was our first visit to Nelson's and the other couple we joined there are regulars so we anticipated a great meal and we were not disappointed. We ordered the appetizer sampler that had the bacon wrapped shrimp, deviled eggs and fried okra. I am pretty sure that I ate most of that platter. All of the items were so delectable and I could not stop my lack of class self dipping that fried okra into the creamy and delicious ranch dressing! Mamma mia! Holy Moly! My husband and I shared the elk tenderloin that was acompanied by mashed potatoes and sauteed onions. A little bite of the meat along with the tators and onions on the fork was oh so good! A perfect bite. We also had the collard greens and cornbread on the side and they were excellent. The service was excellent and personable and I was delighted to meet the owner and talk a little bit about how they get their seafood and the freshness of the ingredients. Very nice conversation. I went with a group. The atmosphere is pleasant. The location itself is a bit small but that actually adds to the overall experience. The seating is comfortable but not plush. I ordered the New York Strip with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The plate presentation was lovely and made my mouth water. The asparagus was perfect. Tender and crisp and very flavorful. The mashed potatoes were excellent. The steak however left a bit to be desired. It was cooked perfectly but full of gristle so it was difficult to cut with a steak knife much less chew. Good was excellent, my filet was cut and cooked perfectly with an excellent peppercorn sauce on the side. Lobster sliders well sauced with nice crunchy celery and seasoned well. Wanted to try something new on a Saturday afternoon and saw the great reviews for Nelson's. We arrived around 2p and there were just a few tables occupied. We decided to sit at the bar and the owner brought us drinks and a really varied menu. I'd seen the good review of the sampler appetizer so we got that and it did not disappoint. Oh my goodness!! This restaurant is FANTASTIC!! Tonight was our first time to dine there and we will be going back often. We tried the deviled eggs and they were delicious!! The artichoke and feta naan was so tasty. Everyone in my family had something different and we each loved what we got. I will be the odd one of out the reviews and state I did not enjoy my experience. We ordered the 12oz ribeye with mash and asparagus along with two salads. We also ordered 2 catfish filets. The salads were not worth $7 at all. However, they were decent. The steak dinner was not worth $45 at all. The char was there but the flavor was off. The mash lacked flavor and the asparagus tasted too earthy with seasoning. To top it off the catfish was swai and it's so deceitful to sale this as catfish when it's clearly not.
