Disappointing first impression. Due to the good reviews I had high expectations for this restaurant. We arrived during happy hour and were surprised to see the restaurant was empty. We were seated quickly and the server took our drink order immediately. Unfortunately, when I ordered a draft beer the server informed me their fridge was down and all they had available was bottled beer. Once the drinks arrived, we inquired about the oyster shooter appetizer. The server went on to explain what the appetizer consisted of and that they no longer offered it as an option even though it's on the menu. We needed up settling for the 30A queso with shrimp. The queso had a nice thick consistency and was delicious. Not sure if the shrimp added much to the flavor, but it also didn't detract from the app. For our entrees we ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp with veggies and the redfish tricky fish platter. The star here was definitely the tricky fish, it was heavily spiced and full of flavor. The crawfish etouffee was outstanding and the fried okra was tasty. As far as the bacon wrapped shrimp, the meal was average at best and the flavor didn't come close to the redfish entree. Our server did ask about a second round of drinks midway through our entrees. I did agree to a beer, but my wife passed on her Painkiller. Moments later a different server came to ask my wife if she wanted a refill and once again she passed. To our surprise our server delivered another Painkiller to the table and took it back moments later when we reminded him that my wife had passed on the drink. Overall this restaurant did not meet my expectations. The food was tasty, but there were too many misses during this visit that detracted from the overall experience. Came to Tricky Fish after work this week in need of a drink. Tricky fish has a pretty good happy hour and drink menu. I ordered the spicy pineapple mule and my friend got a beer. Unfortunately our drinks took a long time to arrive, our food actually arrived before our drinks did. And we had ordered our drinks first. Both of us got the etouffee. I arrived to the restaurant to be told my food was up next, that was at 12:30. Here comes 12:45 and still no food. My co-workers ordered at the restaurant and got their food before I did. I had to leave to get back to work. I asked for a refund and was told I would not get a receipt of refund. I have NEVER had this experience at this restaurant. This was our first visit to this local restaurant that has been recommended to us many times. It has a clean, crisp atmosphere that is very comfortable. We walked in were kindly greeted by the host and immediately seated at the booth that we asked for. The came L J, our server. Never was there a more upbeat, bubbly young lady in this role. She was exceptional. She let us have time for a cocktail, knew the menu well for two wonderful recommendations and timed our service perfectly. We had three items, first the Darn Good Salad which were greens, candied pecans, blue cheese crumbles with a wonderful vinaigrette dressing. This was almost too much to share. Then we had two entrees, shrimp and grits and the tricky fish. Both were exceptional!! As we finished our meals, I asked to speak to Jay, the GM. We had a subpar time this visit. We ordered drinks and a snack of blue cheese chips. The drinks were made quickly and delicious. We sat and enjoyed them for about 20 minutes as we chatted. I've ordered to-go and dine in a few times and each time this place continues to disappoint. I've visited their other location in Frisco and that one has exceptional service, they're very attentive, and clean. I went to this location in Richardson thinking they would provide the same efforts, but I was so wrong. The waitstaff never seem to care about providing good customer service or cleanliness. I've witnessed several waiters bus a table, put their hands on other people's used plates and cups, sweep, and go straight to bringing fresh food out to customers - dirty fingers and all. My guy friend said there was vomit on the restroom floor the last night we came to eat. The food is good, so I've never had issues with my to-go experience. What we ordered - fried calamari: soo good. Highly recommend - tricky fish entree: I've had both the crawfish etouffee and shrimp etouffee and I definitely prefer the shrimp. On 12/4/25 I ordered the Damn Good Salad(DGS) without meat. On 12/5/25 I reported to the mgr., Cindy that I was food poisoned. She immediately took no accountability and was unempathetic stating, "Well no one else reported an issue." She proceeded with requesting I complete an "insurance claim form" regarding the incident as if she was insinuating I wasn't being truthful. I sent an online request for her superior to contact me, and instead Cindy responded via email reiterating the issue was closed and again no one else reported the issue with the DGS. I dine at Tricky Fish on the regular and I've never experienced such unprofessionalism and poor quality of service. I was never offered a resolution or a follow-up from mgmt. as I requested. Firstly our server Kara was amazing! The food was incredible. But I disliked the seating arrangements. They don't allow you to combine tables even if they are right next to each other. Inside and out. So we had to seat 6 of us to a 4 person booth. Kinda annoying but I can manage. And there was a bug in our food and nothing was done. I wasn't really looking for anything but a table visit from a manager would have been nice. Usually just good hospitality. I feel bad for the server for having to deal with all of that on her own. By the way I had the tricky fish plate and my wife had the gumbo. The service from our waiter was horrible. He came and took our drink order then came one last time to take our food order and he never came back to our table. He was still there but never came back. My wife ordered a drink that never came even though we asked the gentleman that brought the food if he could check on it. He was not our waiter. I finished my beer and we both finished our food. Then I flagged down a female waitress who actually did check on us once and asked her who our waiter was. Turns out it was the same inattentive person we thought it was. I asked her for a to go box and she brought it. I told her if I could leave the tip to her I would but we were paying by card. I also told her I was leaving him the waiter no tip. Tried the fried green tomatoes. Wished there was more seasoning in the bredding that came off when cutting into it. My hub said the same thing about the catfish bredding...likely the same. I sat at the bar and the bartender, Allen, was very kind and attentive! I had the Mardi Mambo cocktail (PLEASE PUT THIS ON YOUR REGULAR MENU!!!), a margarita ($5 all day on Tuesdays), fried green tomatoes topped with shrimp, $1 peel and eat shrimp, and a cup of gumbo! What can I say! This place deserves a 10 out of 10. I read the reviews and decided to try it and my whole family loved it. It's very casual there so come as you are. Let's start with service. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. He gave great recommendations. Then Gary, the manager, was phenomenal and on the next level when it comes to service. He first passed by just to ask if we had been helped, then stopped again to see if my husband liked his mule. During the conversation, he mentioned how the original Shirley temple was made and wanted to make me one so I could try it. Let me tell you it was AMAZING! Yes I know, it's just a Shirley temple but it definitely tasted like something that deserved some liquor in it. I'm pregnant so it was perfect for what I was looking for. He even gave it to me on the house which shows just how the customer service is. Next, the food. Calamari $11 8/10 - very good and fresh, with okra and banana peppers. Tartar sauce was okay but still tasty. Mahi mahi herb butter $21 10/10 - fish cooked perfectly came with mashed potatoes (really good!) and Mac and cheese (decent choice). They ran out of veggies. Mahi Mahi Bourbon sherry linguine $21 10/10 - pasta was cooked perfectly and sauced well. Very filling Kids Butterfly shrimp $8 10/10 kids meals pricey but really good. shrimp was fresh and hot. comes with free drink and side. Mashed potatoes fire!
