Excellent food, atmosphere & great friendly service. Run, don't walk! Entrees are delicious and the banana pudding is a major yum.

I stopped by Tricky Fish on the way to an event in Richardson. I had saw pictures of the drinks and heard good things about this place. I wasn't disappointed. The food is good and the drinks are really good. I got the fried shrimp platter. It was a good amount of food and very filling. I also had the frozen margarita. It was very delicious! read more

My second time coming by to Tricky Fish. The service was consistent and prompt on both occasions - one being on a late Saturday evening and this time on a Tuesday afternoon. Food was fresh on both occasions and I can happily say I stand behind their selling point on how everything is cut fresh daily (especially their selection of fish/sea food). I had the shrimp tacos on this visit. The tacos themselves were surprisingly filling and a decent portion size. My only complaint would be that there wasn't much taste to the actual taco themselves. There was a hint of dressing that came along with the coleslaw in the taco, but it felt as if it was a hit or a miss on whether you'd taste it within certain bites. Overall, a little underwhelming but I couldn't complain because of the amount of shrimps that were actually in each taco. It would be a complete 5-star dish if they possibly added a sauce on the side for this. The seasoned fries that came with the plate were perfect. Again, large in quantity and perfectly fried to have a nice crunch to each bite. The seasoning was also very delicious. Although I most likely won't be ordering the shrimp tacos again, I'll most likely be coming back due to their service and freshness of their other sea food entrees. read more

First time at this place and I felt like family. Thanks to Cody for making sure the visit was pleasant. I had the Mimosa bar( unlimited mimosas In Dallas... sign me UP) The shrimp and grits were okay. I wasn't expecting them to be as runny since i am not used to runny grits but overall taste was good. Good food, excellent customer service! Price and serving reasonable. Hope there will be more on the menu including adding calamari

I try not to eat carbs but when I do!!!!! Tricky Fish continues to be where "Everybody knows my name and they're always glad I came". Fabulous food and unique cocktails to choose from. When they aren't at limited capacity it can be hard to find a seat at the bar but that's where you can find me. Drinking a Smoked Old Fashioned and chatting with the bomb bartenders! read more

I asked a friend who lives and works in the area for food recommendations to take my grandmother and mom to since they wanted to eat somewhere near my new apartment. Tricky fish was one of 6 places she listed. However, she insisted that if we didn't try it today, we needed to try it in the near future. I'm a sucker for catfish so I was instantly game once I checked out the menu in the quickest glance ever. The 3 of us walked in unsure of if we order first and then sit or wait to be seated. I get really bad anxiety in these situations, especially if I'm with other people who don't know either. HOWEVER, this isn't the restaurants fault by any means that I'm a bundle of nerves in a new place. The guy behind the counter at the time was so kind to us and asked us how our day was and invited us to spend our time to look over the menu and that he'd be there to answer any questions we might have and assured us everything was pretty darn great. He was so right. The same guy who helped us up front, brought us our food as well as a side of their okra since it was our first time there. Little did he know... besides catfish, okra is my favorite food. We got bleu cheese chips that were spectacular to start off with. I devoured those even though I was trying to share. My mother and I split a pick 2 fried platter of shrimp and catfish that was out of this world. I'm picky about tartar... but TF's was so good, it ended up being a fry dip as well as for my fish. My grandmother had catfish and fried oysters and was just over the moon with it. If you want seafood with some Cajun flare, or just really good food in general, try this place. Please. And if you guys of Tricky Fish are reading this, I really can't thank you enough for the best dining and human interaction experience I've had in a long time. THANK YOU! read more

It was good. We had the oysters on the half shell, fried green tomatoes and split the shrimp and fried oysters.

Absolutely in love with Tricky Fish! I've been to both locations in the metroplex and it's truly a gem! They have this belief system that simple is better. Great food is made with fresh ingredients and simply prepared. Tricky Fish, the idea for it anyway, was born along Chinquapin Reef in East Matagorda Bay. They focused on having good meals, spending time with family and friends, and having drinks to toast with in those moments. It is the core of what Tricky Fish is all about. And there's the simplicity! Not to mention, Louisiana/Creole food is my heart and they've nailed it. My first time in, I was there for a blogger/influencer event. I sampled some appetizers and a ton of drinks but didn't feel like I had experienced it enough to write a review. However, I had fun, met some cool people and had no reason not to return! My second visit in was for brunch with the ladies. Several items spoke out to me like the Praline Pancakes, Bananas Foster Monkey Bread and the Fried Green Tomatoes. I settled on the NOLA Benedict. They take a biscuit and split it in half to stack poached eggs, Creole Mustard Hollandaise, sausage, peppers and onions. Plated with their okra that is probably my favorite item. I'm not sure if they double cook them or what, but they are crisp, seasoned well and to die for! I asked for an extra batch after eating like 4 strips. I also sampled the Shrimp Linguine that came with a bourbon sherry cream *insert drool* and roasted tomatoes. My most recent visit was on Valentine's Day with Fred. We both had drinks. I started with the Blossom a Bacardi drink with lemon, berry blossom tea & strawberry jam. Then the Raspberry Smash made with Tito's vodka plus fresh raspberry, lime, thyme, and peach bitters. He got one of the Mules also made with Tito's vodka, Q ginger beer, jalapeno and mango. It's Called the Hola Peno Mango! So cute. It wasn't the least bit of spicy, just harvested the essence of a good jalapeno. The drink is a bit stronger but def delicious. My favorite was the Raspberry Smash! We both ordered the Tricky Fish. You choose the type of fresh fish you want - salmon, redfish, mahi or talapia (blackened or grilled). You also get a bed of dirty rice topped with crawfish etouffee and those scrumptious-diddly-umptious *Ned Flanders voice* okra slices! The redfish we ordered blackened and it was so juicy, flaky and cooked perfectly. You won't be disappointed with the options at Tricky Fish! read more

My husband and I have been a few times. The first time we went it was a mess. It was so confusing about how to order as there wasn't any direction. You had to go to a register which wasn't clear. The past few times we have been back they have switched to ordering with a server. Much better! The food is really good. Right now, they offer fried green tomatoes with a blackened shrimp. Amazing! My husband and I split the pick 2 with catfish and shrimp. It comes with fries and Cole slaw. We have added the Mac n cheese and the fried okra. Both were very good! The beer is super cold. We tried the bread pudding sundae. It's not really bread pudding. It is more fried French toast pieces with ice cream. Still good, but not bread pudding. read more

Consistently excellent food, typically fun servers, and a relaxed vibe. Excellent bar. We visited here prior to the pandemic when they first opened and ordered takeout many times during lockdown and the food was always consistently hot and fresh. This place is amazing to get fresh fish and they have great options to choose from! The drinks were great too and loved the hospitality.

Great dining experience while sitting at the bar. Christian was fantastic on both beverage and meal suggestions. He was detailed in his liquor descriptions and creative in ways to satisfy the taste of the consumer. Growing up with fried okra, the roasted okra was a great version and well seasoned. My friend ordered the blackened red fish with etouffee and was really good. But the fish from the fish and chips was OUT OF BOUND! On the next visit I won't need a menu. I'd simply order Christian's whiskey sour with egg white and two pieces of beet-battered cod - done! (Sorry - ate the fish too fast to get a pic) read more

Wow! Fantastic! An enthusiastic 5 Stars for Tricky Fish at City Line / State St in Richardson from my family. Last night, our teenage son had their Cheese Burger, replace bacon jam with bacon. He said his burger was awesome! My husband stole a bite and agreed with our son's opinion. I didn't taste it but could see it was extremely juicy! Weird to get a great burger at a seafood restaurant. My husband and I like to try several dishes at a new restaurant. We started with raw oysters...they are fresh and came with the normal horseradish and red sauce. Their oysters also come with an additional sauce. I am not sure what's in it. I think it has red wine vinegar? It had the tange of vinegar but there was also a sweet back note and minced shallots? I dunno for sure but I enjoyed it with the oysters, different than the norm. After the oysters as an appetizer, We had the Gumbo, peel and eat shrimp and crab cakes. Gumbo had plenty shrimp, sausage and chicken. Super tasty and perfectly spicy. Peel and Eat Shrimp were boiled to perfection and again great use of spices. The shrimp came with cocktail and tartar sauce. We both enjoyed the shrimp, with and without cocktail sauce. We did not try the tartar sauce, seemed odd for boiled shrimp. Crab Cakes were also really great More crab than breadcrumbs, we did try the tartar sauce with this dish and great with the crabcakes. Our teen tried it and he was impressed...that means a lot coming out of the mouth of a 15 yr old. Finally, we took home the French Toast dessert. Wow...if it was so good bringing it home, it must be even better at the restaurant. This morning, we were still talking about how great dinner was last nite. Kicking myself for taking before and after pics of our meal. Service: it was obvious she is very new or maybe still in training. She really did a good job. If she didn't know the answer, she was prompt getting the answer. You could tell she knew she needed to know too for future questions. This is the first restaurant in a long time leaves us chatting about dinner the next day, even during these crazy times. Speaking of crazy times...staff all had gloves and masks. My son and husband both commented our table smelled like a pool. Table obviously clean and disinfected before we were seated Looking forward to eating at Tricky Fish in the future. read more

The gumbo....oh god the gumbo. Put that $h!t in your face and enjoy. Rest of the menu is pretty good nothing really out classes the gumbo. The bar is fun and the staff have always been top notch. Aside from that its a neat little place to get lunch or a snack and just enjoy a beverage. read more

Had lan early dinner at Tricky Fish with friends. I would rate the availability of non-seafood items a 3. Yes, I know it's a seafood place, however, many seafood places offer a variety of menu items. Wonderful food. Efficient service. Music on the loud side, but really enjoyed the quality of the food.

OMG, yum! One of those places where I want to just tell the waitress, "one of everything please"! I go back often, and each dish is just as good as the last. Try the fried green tomatoes appetizer; it comes with a little piece of blackened shrimp on each one. So good! read more

The food was DELICIOUS! We actually went 2 days in a row cuz it was so delicious! Service and ambiance were fantastic!

I rarely write a review when I am angry but beware the macaroni and cheese. I tried to order a plain plate as listed on the board for $9. What I got was a 1/2 cup barely dressed pasta. It was barely even a side. When I tried to address it with staff they said I got the side, which is listed nowhere on the menu. They asked if they should charge me for the plate this time. I asked what portion that would be and it would be one cup!!! Don't list something as a plate of food if you are going to only give people a tiny cup portion. I felt the staff was unwilling to make this one right (lathered with a touch of smug). I have been a restaurant manager for a few years. This was badly handled. I will never recommend the place nor will I come back. There are too many great fish places elsewhere. read more

What's trickiest about Tricky Fish is the fishiness of this Yelp profile. There is absolutely no way 608 people have rated this place an average of 4.5 stars. You'll notice that "Shaena T" has replied to nearly every review on here, and there are a LOT of reviews on here from people with 0-1 friends and only a handful of reviews total. Either this place is inspiring people to write reviews even though they rarely if ever write reviews, or they're paying for social-media management and creating a falsely over-rated online reputation. Truly this is a 3.5-4.0 star restaurant at best. Food quality is ok - some things are good (gumbo) and others were served lukewarm and flavorless (blackened redfish with okra and etouffee). Overall very disappointing, as I adore this style of food. We should have gone to Pappadeaux. Here's a tip to the kitchen: heat the plate before you serve it. Service is warm, friendly, and helpful, but I also can't help but feel like I'm eating at an airport in a corporate chain. Happy hour drink prices are pretty good (think $5 margaritas, $7 mimosa type drinks, etc.), but in line with the quality. On a Sunday afternoon the place was dead and vacuous. A true 4.5-star profile with this many reviews RARELY disappoints, and in my experience are usually a world-class dining experience. Caveat emptor - something seems very fishy here. read more

This was first time here and of course I would be coming during the worst possible time due to COVID-19 but things have improved and this place was one of the few that was operating at dine-in level. This was a recommendation from a friend who sang its praises so of course I had to check it out. For starters I had the Fried tomatoes which I love and if I see them on anyone's menu I get them. These were a little different than what I'm used to. They were served with blackened shrimp which actually added a little something to it cause the tomatoes themselves were just ok. It was served with a remalaude sauce which was ok as well. Moving to my main dish which was the Fried Platter with Fish, Shrimp and Oysters. Now my love for Catfish is unreal and I'm very critical if not right and I have to say it wasn't to my liking. The seasoning of the batter was kind of bland and not to my liking. It wasn't terrible it just wasn't what I expected Surprisingly enough I liked the oysters and shrimp. Also, It did come with coleslaw which was good cause I don't like everybody's slaw and also had fries with it. They have other items on the menu and desserts that sounded really good. Overall I did enjoy the place and the wait staff was very friendly and nice, a bit slow but overall good. I may not have been satisfied with the catfish I will go back and try something new read more

Great food, great staff. We eat here all the time, whether it's a quick lunch or dinner and drinks. It's one of our go-to places.

Loved this place! We got the fish sandwich and catfish platter and both were amazing!

1.great service. Channel at the bar was top notch. Her Lime in the Coco Mule was fabulous. 2. Fried green tomatoes are delicious. They are a must try. The little blackened shrimp on top are everything. 3. I echo the sentiments about the Lemon Pepper Shrimp tacos. There was no Lemon Pepper to be tasted. It was just small grilled shrimp in a tortilla with cabbage. The sauce poured over it was ok. The slaw served on the side was creamy and about a 3.5 out of 5. So it was pretty good. read more

I'm not usually in this neck of the woods so I really wanted to eat somewhere I'd never been before. It was a weekday night and we parked right in front, but I can see where parking might be "tricky" during busy times. The whole vibe is super clean and inviting without being over the top. We were sat at a table in the bar area and I think one of the bartenders actually waited on us. I opted for ice tea on this particular evening, but while I was watching the eye catching display of shakers, I decided right then and there that I have to go back for drinks. Every drink that came from the bar was gorgeous and looked so yummy. We split the calamari which was adorned with okra and peppers with remoulade and a tomato like dipping sauce. The remoulade was delicious. I don't like the octopus looking calamari pieces but luckily Bae is ok with them so he ate this pieces. The only complaint I have, which isn't really isn't a complaint, but the sauces were in silver ramekins which have too small of an opening to dip in. Like the red sauce was kind of chunky and you couldn't get a good amount on the calamari dipping in such a small opening. We split the fish sandwich with fries, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. The fries were so good, even without ketchup. The coleslaw tasted really fresh and homemade, not the pre packaged shredded cabbage kind, and the mac n cheese is so creamy and everything all the reviews said it is. The fish sandwich was a bit sloppy and when I picked it up a lot of the fish slid onto the plate.. no worries, I didn't need the bread anyway. read more

Offering a taste of Louisiana-style seafood, this casual counter service at Richardson's CityLine development focuses on classic dishes like gumbo, Gulf oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp, po' boys and crawfish étouffée. The wood-and-exposed-brick environs feature a large wraparound bar pouring Bloody Marys, juleps, and local and regional beers. Our favorites are the calamari, fish & chips, oysters, cold beer, bourbon on the single square rock, & speciality drinks (Vieux Carre!). Great, Friendly Service! Fun Date Night! Ordered fish and chips (but elected for veggies instead) and it is amazing. Full of flavor.

I love this place. I've been to the bar a few times and had a great experience, today I ordered pick up and I am extremely satisfied! I ordered online (wish there was an option to pay cash @ the restaurant), it said the food would be ready at 10:03pm, I walked in right at 10:03pm and was immediately greeted and they were putting my food together right on time. I was walked out of the restaurant by an employee. Also- the food here is amazing! The blackened redfish tricky fish style is delicious. And the Mac n cheese w/ shrimp is right there with it! The food is really, really good. We had the Tricky Fish with Shrimp, a cup of gumbo and crawfish etouffee. It was some of the best we have eaten in the Dallas area. The service needs a lot of work. We had I believe 2 waiters and a manager helping us and we never received refills on our drink. The gumbo was not served until about half way through our meal. The manager said we would not have to pay, but it was on the check. And 10 mins after receiving the check I brought it to the waiter that brought it to us because he never came back to get it. read more

This place was in the same complex as my hotel, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the great reviews. Food: We ordered the calamari and gulf coast oysters as appetizers. I had the gumbo for my meal and my coworker had the salmon tricky fish plate. Everything we had was good! The gumbo had a kick but wasn't overly spicy. We liked that the calamari had some okra and banana peppers in them. The full fish plate along with the appetizers was too much food for my coworker but my amount of food was just right. Drinks: They have a good menu of seasonal drinks and they were made well. I had a Veux Carre, my small complaint here was that I think my drink should have been slightly more chilled. Overall they did a good job. Did I mention, we got here at 6:30 pm, so our drinks were $2 off since it was happy hour? Service: This is where the one star gets knocked off. Our waitress brought us everything that we needed but she was a bit standoffish and rushed. Fortunately, it was not anything that would ruin our meal, just an observation! read more
