I really enjoy the fried catfish, red beans and rice and sausage and jalapeño cornbread. It's opt but they ask u if you want cheese n green onions with a up charge be ware. I don't eat cheese on my red beans n rice. I also like the squash casserole. Very tasty! I'm skeptical to try the Cajun dishes, because I very picky when it comes to creole cooking. Ambience and service - stellar! The food is another story. I have been going here for years, following them from downtown to Memorial and couldn't have been happier with their new location. However, in recent months the quality of the food and the care that is taken with its preparation has slipped dramatically. I understand that the cost of restaurant food has been impacted by the economy. However, I would rather receive a smaller portion of good quality food than the same portion of horrendous quality. I ordered meatloaf, green beans and blackeyed peas. In the few bites that I took of the meatloaf, it lacked tenderness, seasoning and was full of gristle. The green beans were seasoned well, but barely cooked. I know the trend is to have crunchy green beans but these barely touched the stovetop. The black-eyed peas were undercooked as well and the creamy liquor that I am used to was as clear as water. They had the requisite seasonings but the peas were mealy and inedible. My family enjoyed Treebeards for lunch on Saturday. The deep fried deviled eggs were quite delicious. Everything looked and smelled wonderful. Baked chicken, red beans and rice with squash casserole was tasty enough but the Strawberry cake made the meal! Cafeteria style setting and family atmosphere was enjoyable. read more

Walked in. I've never been to this establishment. I didn't know if it was a sit down restaurant or what. I stood there for 5 minutes.... There were several workers around on their phone and no one payed attention to me as I stood there. Finally I got the attention of the bar tender who was on his phone and I asked him how the restaurant worked if I need to wait to be seated or what. He was super rude and told me that I needed to get in line and order. We couldn't believe how rude he was. We stepped out and went to texadelphia and had a great lunch. read more

For a former Houston mainstay, if this new iteration of Treebeards is indicative of the brand these days, they've fallen pretty far from the mark. It's bad enough to be charged $23 for an entree that you order from the counter but when it comes to the table as a few strips of meat floating aimlessly on an empty plate with a few carrots tossed on the side, it really makes you wonder. The rice in several rice forward dishes was undercooked and crunched when you chewed it. The inside seating was nice enough if not a bit cold feeling. The outside patio was basic but sufficient. The staff was nice enough, for being almost entirely comprised of teens from the local high school, but since it's counter service, you're treated to little more than the delivery of your food before you're on your own. What are we tipping for? What are we paying for? If you want to strip everything down to it's bare minimum, fine, but charge accordingly. Needless to say this will not be a repeat experience. read more

We love Treebeards, but we have noticed inconsistencies in quality in their different locations. We will definitely return because we do love their food, but will be cautious of what we order. For example - gumbo at one location has ton of seafood, and the other was all onions and bell peppers. read more

Our family (5) ate dinner at Treebeards in Memorial and everything was great. Special was chicken fried steak. My husband and I had that and others had their house salad and chicken, chicken fried chicken. Cornbread was large and very tasty. Mac and cheese was also good. David the bartender is the best. We always sit at the bar and he is quick, helpful and funny. When I go to treebeards I can never decide what to get because everything is great. The red beans and rice is some of the best I've had (and I used to live in NOLA). The squash casserole and cornbread are both go-to sides for me. Jerk chicken Wednesday is amazing. Chicken fried chicken, chicken strips, and the garden salad are all great. The parking isn't always ideal but they have a parking garage that's never full. I go here at least once a week read more

I'm from New Orleans. Ordered the red beans and rice. Wow...and not in a good way. You do NOT cook red beans with cayenne pepper. That's all I could taste, and was left with a burning sensation at the back of my throat. Red beans have a subtle, smoky flavor...not these. Plus, they had a bit of a bite. Ok it's lent time and no meat on Friday! Treebeards offers great no meat options. Wife and I had fantastic seafood gumbo, lots of shrimp and crab. Son came later and the Red beans and rice was super. Don't forget the crab hush puppies for your appetizer. Management goes the extra mile for the guests and drink refills are easy. Didn't partake but fully stocked bar too. The open back door to veranda which allows the restaurant to fell like an outdoor venue. A+ Treebeards Memorial! Nice job! read more

This is my favorite place to eat of all times. I drive over 45 min to eat at their new location at Bunker Hill. Are used to go to the downtown location it was sad to see it go this is even better you have indoor and outdoor seating. Treebeards (Katy Freeway) does a credible job of carrying on the downtown tradition, except for its cornbread. I've eaten here three times over the last six months and each time the cornbread was a dried out, crumbly caricature of the moist cornbread I used to love. It's either over-baked perhaps or left in a warming tray too long. That said, all of the traditional menu items are still great. read more

Well, the food was not amazing, but I will be back for sure. Great atmosphere...overall, nice dining experience. The red beans and rice was pretty good--I am sure If I ate sausage it would have been tastier, but pork is not in my diet. My son ordered the regular size chicken fried chicken dinner...and honestly, what came out looked like one chicken tender with Gravy(everyone at our table was surprised by the small portions). I ordered crawfish ettouffe for takeout. It was terrible- no crawfish flavor, and WAY more celery, green pepper, and onions than needed. The crawfish were miniscule. For delicious shrimp ettouffe, try Goode Co Seafood. They also have good crawfish ettouffe for about 6 weeks during crawfish season. I will not be going to Treebeards again. read more

We were excited that Treebeards opened on Gaylord. Unfortunately, we were disappointed in the service as well as the food. Since you tip when you order food at the cashier counter, there was evidently no incentive for our waitress to do a decent job. Bad attitude, never checked on us. Had to flag down an accommodating waiter to ask for salt and pepper packets. Food came out quickly but was not hot, just warmish. Gravy looked congealed. Mac and cheese was dry. Looked like the food had sat around a while. Wasn't fresh. Hope they get their act together. Not good. Wish I'd taken pictures so you could see how unappetizing everything but the salad looked. Manager was extremely rude to my Mother in law after a complaint about the non palatable food, told her and my father in law to not come back after snatching her debit card from her hand. Hidden gem off the beaten track, east of Memorial Mall on Gaylord. Never even knew there were restaurants east of Bunker Hill. Loved the long-closed Tranquility Park shop, when this location popped up in a random search, decided to treat my girl to a visit to one of her old favorites. Ordered the chicken fried chicken, squash and mac and cheese and she got the red beans and rice with sausage. The chicken was moist, with a nice crust and would have been great even without the white gravy, but the addition made it perfect. The squash was a mixture of fresh slices and chunks, onions and dressing baked 'en casserole' with browned cheese on top. Classic Treebeards red beans and rice stands the test of time, and the sausage was sufficiently spicy to provide a nice accent. Dinner sized servings were ordered and a nice sliced French baguette came free to mop up afterwards, free refills on fountain drinks as well, full bar for those so inclined. Huge indoor seating area, and plenty outdoor as well. I remembered it as being overly spicy for my tastes my last visit a few years back, and either I'm less sensitive, or the spices are much more balanced these days. Thoroughly enjoyed it. read more
