Went to Treebeards for lunch on Labor Day. The restaurant was pretty empty when we walked in, so there was plenty of open seating. ​It is an order at the counter setup. You place your order, they hand you a number and your drink glasses, and you grab your flatware over by the drink station. They have these cute little trays to carry your cups, napkins, and utensils so you are not awkwardly trying to juggle everything back to the table. After you sit down, they bring your food right out to you, so no waiting around the counter. ​The deviled eggs were delicious, honestly some of the best I have ever had at a restaurant. They come topped with a tiny piece of crispy bacon. They do offer fried deviled eggs, but I am more traditional, so that is what I went with. You can get an order of 3 or 6. We went with 3, and the second I tasted them, I wished we had gotten 6. ​For my main, I got the fried catfish and asked for it extra crispy. It came out piping hot, served with homemade tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, and two sides. They use a cornmeal batter just like my mom used to make, and I absolutely loved it. The tartar sauce was great, too. I would honestly go back just for the fish. For sides, I picked the greens and French fries. The greens tasted just like real greens should. That took me straight back to my mom's cooking, and my mom could seriously throw down in the kitchen. The fries tasted fresh and homemade, definitely not out of a frozen bag. ​I am usually not one to clean my plate and almost always have leftovers, but the portions here were perfect. I ate all my catfish and about half the fries and greens. ​My friend got the chicken pot pie and said it was good. I took a bite, and while it was not bad, it was nowhere near as good as my catfish. For his sides, the mac and cheese was good, but the green beans really did not have much flavor at all. ​Overall, it was a great meal. This location is attached to like a parking garage so it does make parking convenient. There's outdoor seating, tables, and bar seating. I tried the happy hour drinks strawberry grapefruit spritz. It tasted a bit bitter and I couldn't really taste the strawberry at all just mostly syrup. The tequila mockingbird which was better than expected. Edit: I came back for the drinks and they were great. Very friendly. I tried the food and it was on the bland side which if you're trying to eat healthy this could be a good thing. read more

I have not been to a Treebeards in over 20 years - I am just not a fan of red beans and rice or Jambalaya. Yet, a friend picked this restaurant and I met him. Using Waze this is a hard place to find as it is behind office buildings not on the feeder as the address suggests. Further finding outdoor parking is not possible at a peak hour but note that there is an easily accessible parking garage. This Treebeards appearance was very pretty (not what I was expecting giving my experience with the downtown location and I am not sure that it is still around). Also, some other nice restaurants in this block. The restaurant was packed with professionally dressed people. The waiter took our order, and he was accommodating to substitutions and our selection of side orders. I got fried catfish. This is not a normal selection for me as I will normally avoid fried foods other than fries and chips (yes, and I wonder why I do not lose the 5 lbs. that I need to lose). This is a great little spot to have a lunch meeting and then walk right over and get some coffee. Treebeards off the Katy Freeway - Solid Comfort Food in a Convenient (but Tricky) Spot We stopped by Treebeards on the Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas, and it was exactly what we needed for a hearty lunch. Finding the place can be a little confusing if you're coming right off the Katy Freeway because of the unique building structure it's tucked into -- just take it slow and you'll spot it. Once you're there, though, there's plenty of parking in the shared lot. Fair warning: it does get very crowded since so many other restaurants and retail spots share the same area, so you might have to circle a bit during peak times. The atmosphere is really nice and relaxed. They have seating both inside and outside, with plenty of tables plus some comfy couches where you can settle in and enjoy your meal without feeling rushed. You order at the counter when you walk in, then grab a seat wherever you like -- super straightforward. We went with the gumbo, two orders of the chicken pot pie, and a shepherd's pie. Overall, the food was good -- solid, comforting, and filling -- but it wasn't quite amazing. We've definitely had better versions of the shepherd's pie, chicken pot pies, and gumbo at other spots around Houston. That said, the sides were legit! The macaroni and cheese and red beans and rice were both tasty and hit the spot. The jalapeño cornbread had great flavor, but man, it was extremely dry. Like, the kind of dry where you take a bite and immediately need a big swig of your drink to get it down. For dessert, we split the yellow cake with chocolate frosting. My wife really enjoyed it, though I'm not a huge fan of that style. I did notice they offer bread pudding, so I'll definitely be trying that next time. Their salmon might be the best deal in town and as good as anywhere...easy to eat healthy as the vegetables are always perfect. If you're sitting in the bar area there is a waiter, but otherwise it is a counter service and then the food is brought to you. You can get your own tea and fountain drinks and also silverware. After enjoying the downtown Treebeards location years ago, I was excited to visit the Memorial location. Unfortunately, all the great things I remembered quickly disappeared. The gumbo was thick and tasteless, and the pot roast was shockingly dry despite being served with a small amount of thin gravy. The mashed potatoes were good, but my dining companion ordered the red beans and rice with cornbread, and the staff repeatedly brought the wrong dishes--even after we showed them the receipt. The cornbread didn't arrive until thirty minutes later, after the rest of the meal was already finished. The dirty rice has banana peppers or some sort of yellow pepper that I not a big fan of but still was very good. French fries were fresh and crispy, if it was hit with a little more salt fresh out the grease it would be perfect, still good. The gravy was also delicious. It's been YEARS since I've been to Treebeard's, having frequented the downtown location for decades. First, the memorial location is GORGEOUS. The indoor/outdoor feel was perfect on a spring evening. Parking was ample. But the experience went downhill a bit from there. The blackberry ginger margarita was TINY, and extremely unbalanced, overwhelmingly ginger forward where the blackberry flavor was completely missing. The food was incredibly salty while being both dry and somehow just bland. This was what I imagine Luby's food tastes like. That's not a compliment. Order takers were young, inexperienced and not exceedingly friendly. I ended the night with a takeout piece of butter cake. $5 for a 2 inch square of sickly sweet, underbaked cake? I used to go here all the time downtown. I haven't been in a long while so when they put this up on the meeting place for post church lunch I was excited. Now I probably went a bit overboard in ordering but I wanted my kid to sample a few things. The only thing we didn't get that I used to always order was the red beans and rice with sausage link. It's good but I only used to order it because it used to be the cheapest thing on the menu. My kid didn't like red beans and rice though (last time I got it at a food truck) so I decided to pass. Instead I ordered the seafood gumbo (a bit bland - their branded hot sauce helped), fried catfish with étouffée topping (the best of the lot) and a side of tartar, and the jambalaya (also a bit bland). For sides we got mashed potatoes (they have the variety that has chunks of potatoes and skin), jalapeño corn bread (a bit dry), squash casserole (also kinda dry), and fries (nice - best side of the lot). For desert we got the Italian cream cake (still fire), yellow cake (kinda dry but ok if you take a bite with the frosting), buttercake (super sweet like I remember it) and banana pudding (which was arguably the best of the dessert bunch). The staff was super duper nice and not rushed like downtown. Overall the food was decent but not like I remember it downtown in the 90's. I think maybe eating is all about being in the moment. But what can one expect when eating beans not cooked with pork fat? I was disappointed not to find plain cornbread, only jalapeño. But they do bring bread and butter with your meal. Visited on a Thursday for lunch about noon. The place was very busy and a long line. The weather was nice so the outdoor seating was the best choice. There is a full bar and based on the set up looks like a good spot to hit after work to kill time while the traffic calms down. The food was good I had chicken fried chicken and collard greens.
