Professional and willing to go far beyond any other shop. After a very long road with an engine swap, my 1992 Ford 4wd wasnt right, and had other age issues. He explained things very clearly without talking down to me as a female. Michael looked things up on the computer and gave me a printout. My daughter's 2002 Mazda 4x4 Tribute was making terrible sounds and grinding to complete stops. I thought it may be her transmission. A tire shop in town recommended Transcraft. He said the proprietor Michael Dickinson would not be satisfied with less than a complete diagnosis/repair. He was right. Michael test drove the vehicle and right away focused on the rear differential. Up on the rack it went and sure enough the magnetic inspection bolt was layered in metal shavings. Michael then got on the phone and his computer. A new differential would cost $2k, but maybe a good used differential could be located at a dismantler. A day later he located the correct differential, for $550, in No. CA. To insure the work, new seals were purchased from the local dealer. Two work days after limping in to Transcraft, the work was complete and at a fair price. Michael and his crew know their stuff. The care and professionalism demonstrated at Transcraft make it a no brainer recommendation to anyone wanting competent work, courtesy and value. read more

I was on my way to work on Monday morning when the transmission in my 04' Ford F-150 starting completely slipping around 30 miles an hour. I realized that once I took it out of overdrive it stopped doing it. Once I got to work I found out that I was missing around 2 quarts of transmission fluid. After I filled the transmission fluid I was optimistic that adding the fluid would fix the us problem, unfortunately I was wrong. I was recommended Trans Craft by my Step-Brother peanut. I walked into Trans Craft and spoke with Michael (owner) and explained to him what I thought was going on. He and I hopped in my truck and took it for a ride. After feeling and listening to what my truck was doing he explained to me what was going on and that it was very common for late model ford to lose 4th gear and overdrive. He told me he was optimistic that it was an easy fix and said that he could have it back to me by noon the next day. Mind you it was 3 pm when I took it in. I agreed to the work and told him I needed to wait for my wife to come pick me up and drive me home. Michael then asked me where I live and after I told him he said he lives very close to me and that he didn't mind taking me home so my wife didn't have to come all the way in town. He and I had a pleasant conversation on the ride home. I came in the next day after he had fixed the problem. The truck ran very smooth and the price was very reasonable as well. I just bought a 2006 Mini Cooper and on the way home from the purchase, my transmission gives out! in the middle of the road! I went to multiple transmission shops who gave me a quote of 5000-6000. I finally needed to get work done on the transfer case that Michael looked at for me in 2011. Transcraft only works by appointment so I called to make one. They do not answer their phone but have an answering machine and ask you to leave a message. I left a message on two different days that I needed to get my truck in to them as soon as possible but they never returned my call. I was very pleasantly suprised by the depth of knowledge and skill that Michael has. He is expert at fault diagnosing and fixing only the things that need fixing. I recently purchased a 2003 Explorer only to have the transmission go out the day after I bought it. Once getting over the feeling of being scammed with the purchase I was directed to Trans Craft from my local mechanic. Rather than paying thousands for a transmission rebuild, worth more than the car, he isolated the problem to a faulty servo, which could be replaced without dropping the tranny. Michael is a top notch guy. We brought our diesel truck in for a leaky seal. He raised the truck up, discovered the transfer case would need to be removed & all sealed up. Because our truck is old,1997 he looked around the vehicle & noted 2 other things that would need repair in the next 6 months, he called a 2nd shop who specializes in one of the repairs to get us an estimate so we could see the "big picture" & decide if we would go forward with the original leak repair or sell the vehicle. We needed time to think about this, he refused to take money for ALL THIS TIME HE SPENT, 1st inspecting it, then my husband & I got to stand under the raised truck & really understand what was going on. I highly recommend Mike to solve your transmission problems. We maintain a 2000 Ford Expedition at our second home in Truckee. Over the Christmas holiday the transmission went out, and at the recommendation of Quality Auto in Truckee, we had the Expedition towed to Mike's shop in Reno. Mike did a compete diagnostic and confirmed our worst fears - a complete transmission "rebuild". This was not unexpected as our trusted mechanic in the Bay warned us this would happen sooner than later - it was on its last leg when we moved the Expedition to Truckee. Mike talked us through the process in detail paying special attention to parts that could be salvaged to save money. We shared all of this with our mechanic in the Bay and he thought Mike's prices and solutions were reasonable and fair. I am always skeptical of rogue mechanics and have fell victim to them more than once. I was 100% satisfied with Mike's work product - I view him as competent and trustworthy. He decided to install a high performance one. After acouple of months I still didn't like the pedal action so I went back to my surprise his doors were closed out of business. This place is excellent. I don't take giving recommendations lightly. We needed a trans service along with a check of a "clunk" we have gotten for years whenever we would start off driving. We dropped the car off at 8 AM, and picked it up at 2:30 PM; transmission serviced properly, clunk gone and final, totally reasonable cost nearly exact to the estimate. Little important details: This is a shop that specializes in transmissions. They were recommended by another excellent automotive shop. Their reviews like this, are excellent. They have a group sense of humor. They have work and honesty ethics. He knows exceptions along with conventions which is invaluable in fixing unique issues. He will explain precisely, at your level of understanding what is going on with your transmission. The transmission on our 2000 Jaguar S Type has started playing up, randomly jumping out of gear. After visiting two transmission shops who were not that interested the second one recommended Trans Craft. Said Michael was the ultimate Jag transmission guy in Reno. What a gem he turned out to be. I underwrite the praises given in the other reviews on this website. From the get go Michael blew me away with knowledge stored in his head about these transmissions, and what the problem may be - starting with what might hopefully be a fix a lot less expensive than a new transmission. However, after driving the car he came to the conclusion there was no simple fix. He then spent considerable time explaining options to me, some less than a totally rebuilt transmission. Although the cheaper fix he proposed would be warranted for a year, since the car was going to be driven to the east coast and left there, we decided to pass on that. He then spent more time evaluating other options available, all of which were somewhat expensive. Since the car is 17 years old, even though we love it, we came to the conclusion that even if we fixed the transmission the car might start to be a money pit, so we decided to do nothing and pretty much run it until it is done. A long story but the point is, Michael was incredibly responsive, always returned our calls, explained everything in considerable detail, and spent a of lot time researching our options. When I told him we would live with problem and asked him to work up his bill he absolutely stunned me by saying there was no charge, he had really only wracked his brains and made a few calls. I had problems starting about four years ago with my automatic transmission which gradually became a daily problem with it not engaging after coming to a stop. I had my transmission checked out by two transmission shops in the area and both places told me I needed to replace the transmission. I didn't believe they were correct because I could still drive the car after coming to a stop by manually shifting. A friend of mine recommended Transcraft and boy was I glad I took my car in. Mike took the car out for a test drive and came back stating that I didn't need to replace the transmission and what I needed to replace were the solenoids.
