Came here because of the yelp reviews and I wasn't disappointed. After a disappointing experience with a friend's recommendation for a VW mechanic, I turned to Yelp and found Reno Buggie Barn. My Tiguan's issue was with certain dashboard lights coming on, and the engine sputtering and stalling upon acceleration. The referral mechanic fixed it, and within a couple months, the issue started off and on again. It was frustrating. I almost returned to the referral mechanic, but decided I wanted the issue fixed once and for all. Boy, am I glad I did! I called Reno Buggie Barn and made an appointment to drop off the vehicle. Dropped it off and the next morning, Spencer called me to explain the issue and gave me an estimate. I gave him the go ahead and the repair was completed that afternoon. When I picked up the Tiguan, Spencer had the parts he had replaced, and explained the repair to me. WOW, imagine that, a mechanic that explains the repair work to you! Spencer and his son got my 69 bus up and running. He took great care to replace many cheap aftermarket parts on the repair job. I had him reinstall the engine I removed to replace the fan shroud, oil cooler and seals. I also had him go through the front end and brakes system. A lot of work, considering this bus sat for 10yrs before I purchased it. I found his work to be exceptional and reasonably priced. His knowledge is vast and his demeanor is very calm. i've never had my car worked on by Spencer, but i've been to the buggie barn for parts and to ask questions. Spencer may seem intimidating but damn, he is so patient. I asked him about some issues with my carburetor, he actually used up some of his time and got a sample carburetor and gave me a detailed explanation of things that might be wrong. I went back and asked him about my burned voltage regulator, he checked my voltage and found out that my battery was being overcharged. he gave me some valuable advice that probably saved my car! read more

Update: I tuned up the car on a wed and drove to California on friday. I lost my headlight on the drive! Had to fix it in california. When the air filter was changed, the bolt was not put back on so the air filter so the unit was unstable pushing on the light housing. I cannot prove who did or didn't do something and the car headlight has a history of being sensitive. So to be fair, the missing bolt isn't suppose to really cause a problem, but I have a cry baby car. No matter what, the bolt should be put back on. Im not sure if the light was removed to get to the tranny. Everytime someone opens the car, something else goes wrong because things don't get put back correctly. Everytime someone touches the car, more bolts are missing! I spoke too soon. It is like this everywhere I go, even for the most simple services. read more

I just called after them being highly recommended to me by Avant Werks in Truckee to get engine work done on my 1993 Eurovan. I had an overheated incident and no compression in the engine, been stressed out an stuck in Reno for 3 days now. I wanted them to just check it out, make sure it wasn't a head gasket (do a compression test etc). After I relayed that I had overheated and no engine compression he basically told me it wasn't worth his time and kept interrupting me when I was trying to ask if he'd just check it out. We've used the Reno Buggy Barn for years for my daughter's 2003 VW Golf. We always receive honest, expert service at a very fair price. Their diagnostics are quick and accurate; turnaround times are prompt. For example, we recently needed an urgent repair. My daughter was visiting from out of town and the day she was to leave her radiator fluid was low. We took it to the Reno Buggy Barn to have it topped off. When we arrive and popped the hood, radiator fluid had spattered all over the engine--clearly something was wrong. Spencer determined right away that a valve in the cooling system had gone bad. Spencer is by far the most incredible VW repairman that I have ever met. We had a 2003 Passat that, unfortunately or fortunately, is no longer with us. Every time I took the Passat into Spencer, he would clearly explain what was going on with her and what needed to be done. We had extensive conversations about how VWs were made and he always made sure that I knew what my options were. He tried to save us money and time whenever he could and I never once felt that he was trying to bamboozle us or do things so cheaply that we had to return to him more than necessary. If he could not do the job, he would be honest instead of trying to perform the service. I am beyond excited that we finally got rid of the Passat, but I am sad that Spencer won't be able to work on my new car. My Jetta has been a problem vehicle ever since I bought it from a sketchy dealership in LA 7 years ago. Not to mention, every problem with my car costs a ton of money. Because of the constant issues with it, a tight budget, and being burned by nearly every VW mechanic I've gone to, I'm not as on top of fixing regular issues as I should be. Well, a couple weeks ago while driving I realized that I definitely needed my brakes checked out. After doing a bunch of research, I contacted Buggie Barn and relayed my concerns to Spencer. Needless to say, he knew it was likely a brake pad/rotor problem. Unfortunately, his first available appointment was about 5 days out, but he graciously said that I could swing by and he could tell me what was going on in the meantime. The brakes sounded much worse just a short time later and I was nervous to even drive the car, if it meant driving it there and back, and then there again to be worked on. I told Spencer this, expecting to just bring it in for the appointment in a few days. He told me he totally understood and could squeeze me in the very next day! Amazing! Dropping my car off was super easy and fast. Spencer called me literally probably 15mins later and told me exactly what was going on and the cost. I can tell you right now that was the first time I'd gotten that call and not felt sick to my stomach because I knew I was being overcharged. Extremely reasonable prices! I think I dropped my car off around 10ish, and by 4pm I was back in there picking it up! I also asked Spencer a handful of questions about other issues with my car, and he gave me a ton of useful information. Wow - we are 1 week into a 7 week trip from Socal to Banff in our 89 Westy. While in Reno, we noticed antifreeze leaking from underneath the van. I was travelling to Burning Man from Denver when my VW Rialta camper stated making a noise. When I called Buggie Barn they were up front and told me they couldn't get me in, but said come by and we can tell you if it's safe to drive. Which is exactly what I needed to know. He ran the codes and a checked CV joints, took it for a rest drive and gave me the name of the transmission shop he'd recommend.
