Big thanks to Spencer and his team for bringing my 1971 Squareback wagon back to life. I took a chance and bought a car with pulled apart engine. Spencer and his team took on the tedious task of putting it back together piece by piece ensuring it would work properly for me . From brakes to suspension they got my car back to being road ready. This is a business I would recommend, and continue to support in the future. The generational knowledge this shop has is a great value . read more

Came here because of the yelp reviews and I wasn't disappointed. After a disappointing experience with a friend's recommendation for a VW mechanic, I turned to Yelp and found Reno Buggie Barn. My Tiguan's issue was with certain dashboard lights coming on, and the engine sputtering and stalling upon acceleration. The referral mechanic fixed it, and within a couple months, the issue started off and on again. It was frustrating. I almost returned to the referral mechanic, but decided I wanted the issue fixed once and for all. Boy, am I glad I did! I called Reno Buggie Barn and made an appointment to drop off the vehicle. Dropped it off and the next morning, Spencer called me to explain the issue and gave me an estimate. I gave him the go ahead and the repair was completed that afternoon. When I picked up the Tiguan, Spencer had the parts he had replaced, and explained the repair to me. WOW, imagine that, a mechanic that explains the repair work to you! Spencer also gave me estimates for other work that the Tiguan needed down the line. Needless to say, I am grateful to have found Reno Buggie Barn for my Tiguan. The Tiguan has never run better, and I no longer have to worry about whether the issue will occur again. I can now plan for the needed future repair, as well. I have found THE mechanic for my Tiguan! Recommend? YES!! Return? YES!! read more

Spencer and his son got my 69 bus up and running. He took great care to replace many cheap aftermarket parts on the repair job. I had him reinstall the engine I removed to replace the fan shroud, oil cooler and seals. I also had him go through the front end and brakes system. A lot of work, considering this bus sat for 10yrs before I purchased it. I found his work to be exceptional and reasonably priced. His knowledge is vast and his demeanor is very calm. Thank You Spencer! You have made a customer for life! read more

i've never had my car worked on by Spencer, but i've been to the buggie barn for parts and to ask questions. Spencer may seem intimidating but damn, he is so patient. I asked him about some issues with my carburetor, he actually used up some of his time and got a sample carburetor and gave me a detailed explanation of things that might be wrong. I went back and asked him about my burned voltage regulator, he checked my voltage and found out that my battery was being overcharged. he gave me some valuable advice that probably saved my car! read more

I recently purchased a 1981 Volkswagen Westfalia that failed smog miserably (CA). I brought the vehicle to Spencer at Reno Buggie Barn knowing straight up that it was going to be long and costly process to get her running. Spencer took the steps necessary to solve the high RPM missing issue and with it being in the shop for many days due to the need to receive difficult to find replacement parts, it passed with single digit emission numbers. I am more than thrilled with the work the Buggie Barn performed and look forward to using them in the future for all my repair needs. Thank you Spencer and all of your mechanics! read more

Update: I tuned up the car on a wed and drove to California on friday. I lost my headlight on the drive! Had to fix it in california. When the air filter was changed, the bolt was not put back on so the air filter so the unit was unstable pushing on the light housing. I cannot prove who did or didn't do something and the car headlight has a history of being sensitive. So to be fair, the missing bolt isn't suppose to really cause a problem, but I have a cry baby car. No matter what, the bolt should be put back on. Im not sure if the light was removed to get to the tranny. Everytime someone opens the car, something else goes wrong because things don't get put back correctly. Everytime someone touches the car, more bolts are missing! I spoke too soon. It is like this everywhere I go, even for the most simple services. read more

I just called after them being highly recommended to me by Avant Werks in Truckee to get engine work done on my 1993 Eurovan. I had an overheated incident and no compression in the engine, been stressed out an stuck in Reno for 3 days now. I wanted them to just check it out, make sure it wasn't a head gasket (do a compression test etc). After I relayed that I had overheated and no engine compression he basically told me it wasn't worth his time and kept interrupting me when I was trying to ask if he'd just check it out. When I FINALLY got to ask he said not worth his time. I get that it's not worth your time, but I've been to hell and back again this week. It be worth your time to LISTEN and be Nice? Spencer has done work on our '87 Westfalia Vanagon in the past. When ready to bring the van out of retirement and restore the entire drive train and suspension from engine to radiator (BIG job), we knew we would take it to Reno Buggie Barn. Before Spencer started the work he gave us an itemized list with pricing. When he found something else that needed repaired/replaced he sent pics, saved the part for us to see, and gave us rationale for the repair. We were always welcome to drop by to see the progress being made and we were not hit with any surprises at the end. Thank you, Spencer and Cameron! You are professional, honest, and truly passionate about what you two do. read more

Once again I have to rave about the guys at Reno Buggie Barn. Volkswagen or any German brand vehicle this the place to go for servicing. After inheriting my 67 VW bug I soon realized that I am not a VW expert at all. After some chit chat with my father in-law he recommended I see Reno Buggie barn. Told me stories of how the owner was building bad ass VW's back when they were in high school together. I dropped off my problematic bug and they pulled it in without hesitation. Made me a list of what needed to be replaced and just like that it was ready for pickup. I'm very pleased with how it runs, drives, and stops now. There guys really are Vw gurus. Will definitely be back for future upgrades! read more

I've had alot of work done by these guys and they have always been honest and full of integrity. He said, one day, that he was so disgusted by the cheap and crappy muffler someone had put on our car that he would give me one that was better. He did! For aircooled bugs there is no better a place in Washoe. Avoid the others, save your money, get better work done... yeah I could go on for a while. I tried all the other guys around the area and they generally do crappy work and over charge. If you go anywhere else you are throwing your money away. read more

Heard that Spencer was the man and they weren't wrong. Brought my baby in for some work and a check up. Spencer rose my dune buggy from the grave and saved my summer!

We've used the Reno Buggy Barn for years for my daughter's 2003 VW Golf. We always receive honest, expert service at a very fair price. Their diagnostics are quick and accurate; turnaround times are prompt. For example, we recently needed an urgent repair. My daughter was visiting from out of town and the day she was to leave her radiator fluid was low. We took it to the Reno Buggy Barn to have it topped off. When we arrive and popped the hood, radiator fluid had spattered all over the engine--clearly something was wrong. Spencer determined right away that a valve in the cooling system had gone bad. He was able to obtain the needed part and make the necessary repair within a few hours and get my daughter on her way. The car has been running great ever since. Thank you Spencer and Reno Buggy barn for your trusted service! read more

Spencer is by far the most incredible VW repairman that I have ever met. We had a 2003 Passat that, unfortunately or fortunately, is no longer with us. Every time I took the Passat into Spencer, he would clearly explain what was going on with her and what needed to be done. We had extensive conversations about how VWs were made and he always made sure that I knew what my options were. He tried to save us money and time whenever he could and I never once felt that he was trying to bamboozle us or do things so cheaply that we had to return to him more than necessary. If he could not do the job, he would be honest instead of trying to perform the service. I am beyond excited that we finally got rid of the Passat, but I am sad that Spencer won't be able to work on my new car. If you need a VW mechanic, you won't find a better one than Spencer. read more

I've owned my Super Beetle for 38 years and taking it to the Bugg Barn 5 years ago was the smartest move I've made with it. My Jetta has been a problem vehicle ever since I bought it from a sketchy dealership in LA 7 years ago. Not to mention, every problem with my car costs a ton of money. Because of the constant issues with it, a tight budget, and being burned by nearly every VW mechanic I've gone to, I'm not as on top of fixing regular issues as I should be. Well, a couple weeks ago while driving I realized that I definitely needed my brakes checked out. After doing a bunch of research, I contacted Buggie Barn and relayed my concerns to Spencer. Needless to say, he knew it was likely a brake pad/rotor problem. Unfortunately, his first available appointment was about 5 days out, but he graciously said that I could swing by and he could tell me what was going on in the meantime. The brakes sounded much worse just a short time later and I was nervous to even drive the car, if it meant driving it there and back, and then there again to be worked on. I told Spencer this, expecting to just bring it in for the appointment in a few days. He told me he totally understood and could squeeze me in the very next day! Amazing! Dropping my car off was super easy and fast. Spencer called me literally probably 15mins later and told me exactly what was going on and the cost. I can tell you right now that was the first time I'd gotten that call and not felt sick to my stomach because I knew I was being overcharged. Extremely reasonable prices! I think I dropped my car off around 10ish, and by 4pm I was back in there picking it up! I also asked Spencer a handful of questions about other issues with my car, and he gave me a ton of useful information. Honestly, this was the best car shop experience I've ever had and I refuse to go anywhere else to have my VW worked on. read more

Wow - we are 1 week into a 7 week trip from Socal to Banff in our 89 Westy. While in Reno, we noticed antifreeze leaking from underneath the van. It's a Friday before a 3 day weekend and we are in unfamiliar territory. Put the word out in a VW Facebook site and was referred to this place. I called and spoke with Spencer who advised that he could take a look at it around 9:00...it is now 10:00 and we are back in our hotel with a completely fixed vehicle. Spencer and his son were so friendly and helpful!!! Also, very knowledgeable about vanagons and VW's in general - had a beautiful Porsche in his shop as well as other VW types that he was working on...I wish we lived in Reno so he could be our regular mechanic....Can't thank you enough Spencer (and son) for getting us back on the road - a big shout out to Matt for the referral! read more

Spencer, and his family are the only mechanics I will take my bus to. I have been to several VW mechanics in Reno, and Biggie Barn is always the best. Spencer is super knowledgeable, his prices have always been very reasonable, and what he has quoted me has always been almost exactly what I paid. He keeps you up to date about whats going on with your car, and has sacrificed his own time to show me how to properly maintain my bus, and share his knowledge with me many times. I'm very glad to have him around to work on my Bus. Best VW shop in town for sure. I would recommend them to anyone with a V-Dub that needs some TLC, or a full transmission re-build. And yes I did have my transmission re-built here at bug barn, and its been great! read more

I have had extensive work done on my '78 Campmobile and my '74 Beetle at the Barn, and I couldn't be more impressed. As a lifelong air-cooled VW enthusiast, I am my own mechanic quite often, and I have experience with quite a few mechanics. None, however, compete with the integrity and attention to detail I have received from Spencer. He has learned his trade from his father, (an artisan that willl be missed) and is an expert. He has been within 8% of his bid on every big job. He has advised where safety dictactes additional repair, and where frugality may come into play in my favor. I seriously doubt if there is a better air-cooled VW mechanic west of the Mississippi. With 40 years of experience under his belt, this is the place you take your project, your restoration, or your daily driver. read more

When I called Buggie Barn they were up front and told me they couldn't get me in, but said come by and we can tell you if it's safe to drive. Which is exactly what I needed to know. He ran the codes and a checked CV joints, took it for a rest drive and gave me the name of the transmission shop he'd recommend.
