While visiting family in Houston we were excited to come across a "real" Mexican (as opposed to Tex-Mex...iykyk) taco shop. As soon as you walk in and see the Tijuana and Baja Mexico signs and decor you know you're in the right place. There's an open kitchen, allowing you to watch your carne being grilled on the open-flame grill. That charged meat smell is heavenly! Their guac is chunky and simple (nothing too fancy), hot sauces are tasty (and they have a kick!), tortillas are thin but strong -- holding the goods in just right. It's also nice that they have complimentary tasty, crispy pork rinds -- as opposed to the standard chips & salsa. Portions are ample! They definitely don't skimp -- tons of meat and guac in their tacos and huge, meaty burritos! Prices are fair, especially for what you get! Their dining room is a tad small, but it's very clean and the a/c is good...there's also a nice patio outside. Service was swift and friendly. Food was good. A/C was poppin'. Parking was plentiful. All in all I have to admit that Tacos Frontera comes as close to good San Diego Mexican food as you can get...they would definitely be able to hold their own in San Diego!

Unfortunately, my experience yesterday was so unacceptable that I will never return. When placing my order, the employee taking my order appeared intoxicated. His eyes were drooping and closing, he repeatedly paused, mumbled, and seemed to struggle entering my order. Although this was concerning, I chose to overlook it and waited patiently. After about 10 minutes, I simply returned to ask whether my order had been placed and if it was ready. I was not upset, in a hurry, or complaining. I only wanted confirmation that my order existed because the employee kept responding, "No orders, no orders," despite me showing him my receipt. Due to an apparent language barrier, I called my Hispanic husband and handed the employee my phone so he could ask the same simple question in Spanish. Instead of helping, the employee began yelling at my husband. Another employee joined in, and both started yelling while walking away with my phone. When the phone was returned, I still had no idea what had happened or whether my order was being prepared. The situation escalated for no reason. The employees began yelling at me, aggressively slammed the service windows shut, ignored me, and treated me as if I had done something wrong. I remained calm throughout the entire interaction and repeatedly stated that there was no problem--I simply wanted to know if my order had been placed. Eventually, the food was thrown together carelessly, shoved into a bag, and handed to me with obvious hostility. The food quality was terrible, and the customer service was even worse. What disappointed me most was that this entire situation was completely unnecessary. I was respectful, patient, and simply asking a basic question. The combination of an employee who appeared intoxicated, the aggressive and unprofessional behavior from both employees, and the poor quality of the food made this one of the worst customer service experiences I have had. At that time the man in the truck pulled the tip jar in behind the window and then moved away from the window when my wife tried to order. Another person (antonio) had to take my wife's order. Bad enough. After she ordered and went to wait in the car a hispanic young man arrived, the same guy put the tip jar back out and took his order with no issue. We won't be back. We go out of our way to support food trucks and the birria ramen is good enough. The guys in the truck are even fighting, slamming items, and throwing things at each other in front of customers. This is at 3:20 PM on June 16th. One of the guys is/was bleeding and this is just a bad day all around. The food is good, the meat is always savory and juicy. Really depends on who you get cooking. Either way I don't appreciate how my wife was treated and I want to believe this was just a bad day. Things to consider. Good atmosphere and solid food truck experience.

On Saturday, March 1, my wife and I decided to have some drinks at Torchy's Bar around 8 p.m. It was a quiet evening with only the two of us at the bar. We ordered a beer for myself, a margarita for my wife, and some chips and guacamole to snack on. After a little while, I ordered another beer. Around 8:40 p.m., we asked for the check, and the amount came to $30.03. I handed over my credit card, but when the bartender returned it, the total on the bill had jumped to $51.85. I immediately pointed out the discrepancy and asked the bartender to explain the difference. He simply insisted that it was a mistake on the bill, but I found it hard to believe, given that there were only two of us and the bar wasn't busy. I asked to speak with the manager to resolve the issue privately, but he didn't offer much assistance. He apologized briefly, handed me his business card, and gave us a chip coupon. I felt like he was unprepared to handle such a situation and didn't genuinely care about making things right. In an attempt to resolve this, I called corporate three times, left messages, and never received a return call. This lack of response only added to my frustration. This experience left me feeling like I was being taken advantage of. What should have been a simple and pleasant evening turned into an incredibly frustrating ordeal. I would go as far as to call it a robbery, as the unexplained overcharge felt intentional. I will not be returning to Torchy's, and I would caution others about potential billing issues and poor customer service. read more

Torchy's Tacos is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves delicious, authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. The restaurant's menu boasts a wide variety of mouth-watering tacos, but what really sets Torchys apart is their incredible queso. The queso at Torchys is simply out of this world. It's creamy, cheesy, and packed with just the right amount of spice to make your taste buds sing. Whether you're dipping in a chip, a tortilla, or just eating it with a spoon (no judgment here!), you'll be left wanting more. But Torchys isn't just about the food - the atmosphere is equally as delightful. Situated right by a beautiful pond, the outdoor seating area is the perfect place to enjoy your meal while soaking up some sun and taking in the gorgeous scenery. You'll be joined by birds and ducks, who are more than happy to keep you company as you chow down on your tacos and queso. Speaking of tacos, they are equally as amazing as the queso. With a variety of creative and unique fillings, you'll be hard-pressed to choose just one. The Trailer Park taco is a fan favorite, featuring fried chicken, green chilies, lettuce, pico de gallo, and shredded cheese. Vegetarians will love the Brushfire taco, which is filled with grilled jalapenos, grilled onions, shredded cheese, and avocado. Overall, Torchys Tacos is an absolute gem. With its delicious food, stunning scenery, and friendly staff, it's the perfect spot for a casual meal with friends or a date with that special someone. Highly recommended! read more

Torchy's is great, but customer service not so much I work nearby so I usually pick up lunch from here. The girl behind the bar with black hair is always extremely rude. Always has an attitude problem and has never been nice Once. I run into this lady every time I do a pick up order she's seriously needs a manager to talk to her to have some good customer service because for every time, this is absolutely ridiculous. She does anything and find any way to linger around and not grab my order just to have me sit and wait on her like some sick joke. I am usually not a fan of less than authentic mexican food, but this place has won me over. They have a new taco every month that is always very creative. The bar here is always a great place to grab a drink when I am not with the family. The patio is right next to the pond with the ducks so needless to say it is a challenge to get the kids to finish there food with out constantly wanting to share with the ducks. My favorite is the trailer park "trashy". Not a big fan of any of the tacos that use steak you can tell it is an after thought. The chips and queso are a great way to start a meal. My only complaint is the tiny thimble of salsa you get with the tacos. Just not enough to satisfy. Over all a pleasant surprise. read more

Um, what's the big damn deal about this place? There's always a line, which is annoying. The food is just mediocre. The menu is small. They're expensive. But they do have some delicious sodas. Their menu is fun to read but the actual Product is just "meh". Not worth the hype that everyone swears by. I feel it's very overpriced and just for the food and the line I should leave there happy. Not feeling like I was wasting my time. Was the food edible? Sure it wasn't just horrible. But it wasn't delicious. And it wasn't that unique. It was just, well food. I really prefer fuzzy's tacos. I really don't know what all the fuss is about. It is good but honestly, I had heartburn all afternoon after eating here for lunch. Maybe it was what I ordered. Honestly, I think there are too many Mexican food places around.
