I sent Doug a message on Yelp, and he responded quickly with what turned out to be the correct diagnosis: biofilm buildup in the sink's overflow area. Even more impressive, he told me it was something I could probably fix myself. He offered to talk with me by phone and patiently explained what was going on, which I really appreciated because I honestly didn't even understand how that part of the sink worked. In the end, I was able to fix the problem myself with a flexible brush and a little bleach- less than $10 total.
