I have been to Tiger Sugar multiple times since they first opened in Downtown Flushing in May 2019, but eventually, the line subsided by 2020. Even before and during COVID, the quality of the brown sugar boba milk was still consistent, a refresher and a treat every time. I think for the most part, Tiger Sugar mainly focuses more on the creamy side with the cream mousse, with a hint of brown sugar in it, with Xing Fu Tang focusing more on the brown sugar components and fresh boba. Nevertheless, I still enjoy Tiger Sugar, with an enjoyable brown sugar boba milk every time. However, I dislike their new offerings with the coffee jelly and their new additions in which that it is distancing itself from the drink they are known for. In the five minutes it took to wait for our drinks, my sister and I were accosted by a homeless person who made physical threats to us while also not wearing a mask. I felt incredibly unsafe even when I tried to move away, as he proceeded to continue to harass us. We almost left without our drinks because we were so scared. So finally this place lost its hype, I decided to try on the T2 golden oolong green tea with boba since I'm lactose intolerance. The place is empty but the girl who took my order was pretty rude and rushing. Im on the prediabetes stage, i want to adjust my sugar level. The hype is real! I've never been a huge fan of boba, but my friend introduced me to Tiger Sugar and I am hooked! I've only ever had their famous brown sugar boba with creamed mousse, and it's the only boba I've ever craved, and that's saying a lot, because I never crave boba. It's not overly sweet where you'd get sick of it, and the tapioca comes in different sizes, which I was surprised it was all cooked evenly. They recommend you shake it about 15x before you drink it so the brown sugar gets melted and is distributed evenly throughout your drink. I've gone through 4 different flavor setups and this is what I've learned about TS. 1. Boba vs. Pearl: Pearl refers to smaller tapioca balls while boba is the larger ones. I prefer the smaller pearls as they do not get stuck in the straw as much and they are softer and easier to chew and eat. 2. Flavor: Its a brown sugar boba drink and it tastes like it. I usually order milk teas, but they recommended the milk only. Surprisingly, the milk didn't overpower the drink, and the brown sugar was at a good sweetness level, comparable to getting 50% sweetness. 3. Tapioca quality: For me, the quality of the tapioca is what sets it apart from the rest, and having the smaller pearls is what puts TS at the top of my brown sugar list. Yes, the tapioca changes the flavor experience tremendously. If it's clumpy and stuck together or still a bit frozen, the tea just doesn't taste as good. 4. Milk over tea: There is a shift towards using milk over tea as the base, and at TS the milk is king. 5. Cost: For a person like me who is almost a daily "bubble drinker", $4.00-$5.50 is reasonable considering the quality of the tapioca and the level of care with the overall packaging of the product. 6. Menu: I know this is nitpicking. Pro: It's condensed and focused on a few items and there's a nice explanation of their product. Cons: First time, I was confused about boba series and Pearl series. In the description on the menu right side, it's mentioned as boba pearl, so I thought they are the same? Second, what do they recommended? My first time I wanted the best seller, but unfortunately I got the black tea version bc, well I thought I was getting bubble TEA and that was the first tea item I saw. Overall: Now that I've gone through the gamut of flavors, my top is the BROWN SUGAR PEARL MILK WITH CREAM MOUSSE and I would gladly wait in line again for that. Tiger sugar has a nice appeal to it- one is the amazing amount of popularity it gains to its attraction- waiting in line is almost an event in itself, two is the esthetic the drink gives, and three the new fad of brown sugar boba. The long line actually went by pretty fast and there is a little menu the lady at the front hands out. Unique to this beverage is that they put two types of tapioca- both small and large boba that give a new and interesting texture to the drink. The brown sugar is very rich but the foam on top makes it even richer in flavor. The brown sugar makes it taste like a melted werther's caramel candy. After seeing all the rave about Tiger Sugar, once I got to NYC I had to try it out! I was intimidated by the line, but it moves very quickly and the employees seem to have mastered their signature drink, Brown Sugar Milk Tea with pearls & cream mousse, (which everyone orders) so the wait wasn't bad at all. The shop is a booth, so yes, you do have to wait outside in the cold. Once I got my drink, I was surprised that the cup was warm. I didn't know you had to shake your drink, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste while it was warm. It is a very sweet drink and you cannot adjust ice and sweetness levels- so you should probably avoid the signature drink if you do not have a sweet tooth.
