Threads is hands down the best eyebrow studio in the DMV. This business is women owned and operated by Sonya. She owns all other DC, MD & VA locations. Threads is so popular and Sonya has had several hundred customers access the DMV area that she was able to open several locations. This is a before and after picture. I moved to the west coast about a year ago. I tried going to other artists, but non compare to Sonya's master craft. I literally let my brows grow out 3 months so Sonya could do my brows. She never disappoints. She is so detailed, so sot after, welcoming & truly cares about what her customers want and need. I sat in one of the two salon chairs at Threads with tears streaming down my face. The tears were not tears resulting from pain or sadness. The woman who was performing the threading on my brows probably thought she was causing me great pain but, in fact, my eyes well up easily and the quick movements around my eyes caused them to well up (psychosomatic more than anything, I think!). When I visited on a Saturday, there were at least half a dozen women lined up for the opportunity to sit in the two salon chairs. By the time I left the line had doubled in size. Two women worked quickly and precisely on customers, one end of a thread in their mouths, the other twisted and moving quickly across the faces of soon-nicely brow-ed women. Discarded threads were dropped to the floor and, as testament to how busy they were that day, the floor was littered with curled white thread. My turn was quick - it took a couple of seconds to become accustomed to the feeling of the threading; imagine the sensation of plucking your eyebrows, except a lot quicker and certainly more thorough. You'll pull on an eyelid to help your threader; my brows were done in under 5 minutes. To finish, she wiped my brows with what I assume is something to soothe my face. The area threaded was red for a little while, but now, hours later, I only have wonderfully shaped brows where waxing and sugaring normally leave bumps and irritation. The tears streaming down my face now are tears of joy at the prospect of no longer having to wax or pluck on my own. I'm a convert! The cost of brow threading is $15 and Threads prefers cash, but will accept credit cards if you really have to. read more

Don't go here unless you are *beyond* desperate. Which no one should ever be for eyebrow maintenance. 1.) It took longer, cost more, and hurt more, than every other threading I've received in the last 4 years. If you've ever seen one of those triangles of properties, you know the ones: "Time vs. Cost vs. Quality" and you know you'll only get two, then this place fails on all accounts. Quality was only so-so. 2.) I bled for the first time during threading. Back to that triangle: You make me bleed (during threading)? It should be free. I think I'm done with threading, and with this place. I came today at 11:30 and the place was closed, even though their hours of operation starts at 11am. I had come by on Monday and didn't know that they were closed Sundays and Mondays. The tech who did my brows last time was working with another client, so I got a new person, who was apparently new to threading. She worked very slowly and hesitantly. After about 20 minutes, she showed me the mirror. What she basically did was clean up some stray hairs but my brows pretty much looked the same, even though I told her it was okay to thin them out since my eyebrows grow back very quickly. No arch, either. I paid $15 cash and left. I later went to Last Tangle because I had a waxing appointment with Maria and for another $15, Maria fixed my eyebrows. Maria said the girl did not take much of the hair off, as she had to wax to get rid of strays. In addition, the thread had cut into my skin so now I have several small cuts under my left arch and let me tell you, it stings to remove makeup and wash my face. No more threading for me. I still think if you have sensitive skin, give it a try, but I personally will pay more money for waxing now. read more

I love Threads! I came in without an appointment, and the woman behind the counter was able to quickly help both me and my mom look slightly more fab than we did walking in. Mom got the "whole face" and I had my brows threaded. Brows were $15, full face was $45. This was my first experience with threading and I was thrilled. I instructed the threader to keep my naturally thick eyebrows the same size, but add some shape and definition. She completely respected my wishes and took off just enough to make me look put together and neat; no scary thin eyebrows here. It was quick, relatively painless, and much less traumatic for my skin than waxing. My Mom was thrilled with the "full face" service. She is ice-blonde, so it's not as if her face hair was super obvious, but she reported feeling like her skin was fresher and makeup went on more smoothly! The only caveat is shop cleanliness. Things were pretty clean, but there were threads on the floor; removed hair was simply brushed off. This is not a luxury establishment by any means. It didn't bother me, but if you're looking to be pampered this probably isn't the place for you. Threads is utility-minded. You get in and get out, no frills or fuss! 3.5 Stars. I'm loyal to Dupont Threading, but decided to cheat on them with Threads after the G2 was being unreliable and getting over to Dupont was going prove too annoying. Good job overall--I felt they were much quicker with threading my chin and upper lip than Dupont Threading, but felt that Dupont Threading does a better job of shaping the brows. Also, they're a wee bit more expensive than Dupont. However, good job overall. Definitely would come back here if needed. read more

I am not pleased with my experience. I tried to save some time and visit the U street location instead of the gallery place, but I wish I had waited. The brow tech was initially hospitable, however she could not accomplish what was desired. I gave her a picture as a point of reference, but my brows didn't come out anywhere close. I had to ask her 4 times to fix the brow.. and gave up once she stated that it was impossible to get my brows the way I wanted them. I am a walk-in client...when I go I only get my eyebrows threaded (cost $15 ) They have much better customer service than the location in Chinatown. They have never been rude to me here. Parking is a gamble, it is very tight down there. Generally take no longer than 5 min to snag a spot. Be mindful of the zone parking... There are some sides to the street that you can only park on if you have a zone sticker. If you are planning to stop by after work plan to wait because you will not be alone. Especially on a Friday... It's a mad rush to clean up those brows for the weekend :-) read more

I gotta tell you.... I'm not a fan. In a pinch... they'll do. Overall..their attitude sucks and their attention to detail and service is sub-par. I went in on Friday afternoon and the place was empty. Still I had to wait ten minutes while the lady at the desk just sat there doing what...god only knows. The places was hotter than hades so that i had to remove my light jacket and i even started to sweat. When she finally directed me to a chair she just started threading. Ive been getting threaded for a number of years now and everyplace I've been too has always started off with some powder....not so much over here. Then when she was done, she wiped my face down and handed me a mirror. There was hair all over my face! I had to go to the bathroom and wipe all the threaded hair off myself before I could leave. The threading itself was ok...not the best job and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do some touch ups later in the week. Like I said...if you're in a hurry or its last minute, its an ok choice..but personally I'm looking for somewhere else. This place is a hair removal institution. It is always packed and the open, totally visible staging of the salon chairs gives it an odd 'social meeting place' feel. Even though people waiting in line studiously avoid even looking at one another. It's like a brisk game of musical chairs as the line moves down the seats. The quality of the work is a-ok. It is a bit of a crapshoot depending on who you get. Some customers specify they only want the owner to do their brows which means a longer wait during peak times. Considering there aren't a ton of threading places in DC this place is a-okay. I can't give it more then 5 stars though because I hate the lay out of how you get threaded smack dab in the middle of a crowded room. And the prices are too high. The last time I checked a 'full face threading' was $50 or more which is kinda insane if you've ever lived in an area where threading is more common. In the bay area you can get your brows down for $8 from in-demand threaders and a full facial threading for around $30. I've heard people from Texas of all places quote even lower prices. Yes, I know DC is not TX or CA, but $50 is still a good chunk of change. The upside to this place is that it's exclusively for eyebrows with multiple threaders on hand so you can walk in anytime (with some long wait times, but still). So it's convenient. read more

I'm going to try to be quick, simple and sweet. Love IT! Will never go back to waxing. Unbelievably precise and clean. Who to go to: Sonia and Pretty (seriously!!!!) Sonia is there every Thursday and Saturday at the U st location and Pretty is there every day its open except Thursday. It's best to go during your lunch break - less traffic. Why?: Not everyone loves threading, but I am STUPID particular about my brows, that's why threading makes sense for me. Although its a tiny bit longer (length in time) than waxing, Pretty and Sonia are professionals to know when to stop, keep going or leave them simple. It is less painful than waxing and those two are always super friendly and attentive. Don't get me wrong, I had a few mishaps, but that was when I didn't go to my two girls... Love'em! read more

This was the worst threading I have gotten ever. Do yourself a favor and don't come to mess up your brows. Absolutely no technique. I went in there on a weekday afternoon and the place was empty. Even then, there was no asking how I wanted my eyebrows done or how it will look with my face shape. I could barely get the words out that I didn't want my eyebrows thinned and to keep my arch before she started. And what came out was the exact opposite. My eyebrows were thinned dramatically and there was less of an arch than before! She took out way too much from the bottom part of my eyebrow and showed that she has no idea how to shape an eyebrow. I am so sad about my brows look now. And on top of that, it's grossly overpriced at $15. I just moved from New York, where even there, for this kind of service and technique, it would be $7-8. If you are going to upcharge, at least have the skills or service to justify it. So sad. read more

I have been going to Threads off and on for about a year. I'd say the threading is inconsistent - the results range from fair to great. I'd rather it be great all the time but this place is just down the street from me so I know I'm settling for convenience's sake. Threads was the first threading place that I tried in DC after moving here. A friend and I went there on a Saturday afternoon after brunch and the place was packed. I would definitely recommend trying another day. Salon: The salon is clean and simple - no bells and whistles but that is what I want from a threading place. The women who did my eye brows did a fine job at least in terms of the overall shape. However, I noticed a lot of hairs she missed when I got home so I had to clean up my eye brows myself. It seemed like she just wasn't paying attention to the details. Price: $15 plus tip. It is pricier than the other place that I have gone in DC, which does a better job, so it definitely isn't worth the extra couple of dollars. Sonjia is fantastically talented at what she does, and just by walking in on a weekend afternoon you can physically see the testament to this. The original salon is on L st. which I don't live close to, so I can only say how busy the new U St. location is. Usually though I have good luck during the weekdays after work, the earlier the better. Any DC salon is going to be packed on the weekends, so those who are complaining of long lines, this is not unique to Threads. I went to Threads all 3 years that I lived in DC and just recently moved to Denver..... I am SORELY missing this salon! I have only found one person out here who threads, and she takes forever and my brows don't even look as good. Sonjia and her staff are quick (give the newbies time to get up to speed before you judge), and although they may not appear overly nice on your first visit, trying to kiss up to you like a salon in georgetown might, they know their returning customers and become increasingly warm with each visit. I am only giving 4 stars vs 5 because they could stand to put a third chair in there during their known busy hours. I have had the unfortunate chance of going in on a weekend in a pinch and it is slightly ridiculous. but the outcome is beautiful and less irritating that waxing, just do yourself a favor and give them a few tries :) read more

Look if I wanted to use some sandpaper and just scrape off half my face I'd bloody well do exactly that. But sadly I paid to get that effect done at Threads. And obviously that was not my intention. So as I'm sitting here with a bandaid across the left side of my lip because turns out sandpapery threading can leave you with cuts and scrapes that run a risk of getting infected, all I'm going to say is, don't go here unless you're a pachyderm. read more

For $15, I've DEFINTELY had better brow threading. In fact, for $14 at Dupont Threading (incl. tip) I had better brows. Since it's closer and more accessible, I walked into the shop today around 3 without a wait for an brow thread. The young woman (with an attitude) threaded my brows, cutting her thread 5 times. Brows just looked cleaned up, no shape; at least I didn't get cut though. Cheap thread, bad attitude, and a high price gives this 2 stars. Go to Dupont instead--cheaper and better quality service. read more

She's quick, the most painless (and I'm a wimp when it comes to my lip), and really receptive to shaping my brows the way I like them. They are open Sundays 11-4 and I've never experienced longer than a 10 minute wait. read more

To be fair, I've had nothing but good experiences here until tonight. When I got in the chair I asked her to shape my brows but not make them to thin (I've learned to do this after a waaaaay to thin experience before here). After she was done, I asked her to make them a bit thinner to which she replied "No" and walked away. I sat there for a moment, but after a long day of work I didn't have it in me to fight with her. I honestly think I was so shocked that I wasn't sure what to do. When I first got there I noticed the lady in front of me who had my technician, was having her go back and redo her brows a few times so maybe she was new. But I should have taken notice of that and asked to wait for the other technician who seemed to be very friendly and helpful to her client. I'll probably go back b/c it's convenient, but I'll be sure to observe what's happening to the people before me. That's my advice to you as well! read more

I can generally rely on this location for a good job. I was very pleased to not find a wait when I arrived in the middle of Saturday afternoon. The service was polite and friendly. The girl who did my brows got a wonderful shape and I was really happy with her technique, but she could have been more thorough. I just came back from Threads this afternoon - and I HAD to update my review - the price has now gone up to $15!!! This does not include the tip! This is OUTRAGEOUS! That works out to about $60/hour - that's how much they are making. That's ridiculous! I know that rents on U Street are not cheap...but they're not THAT expensive either. A friend of mine gets her eyebrows threaded in New York at an ACTUAL Salon and she only pays $7...I hate that they've done this... They won't get anymore of my $$.
