I dont remember if there is a garage or self park, but there are plenty of parking garages nearby. Staff here is very friendly, and elevators are secured with key card access. The Thompson Chicago exceeded my already high expectations! My sister and I were going to a wedding last weekend at Notre Dame and we decided to come a day early and spend time in Chicago. My friend Kelli recommended the Thompson Chicago. It is more than I usually spend for a hotel room but my sister and I shared the room and we wanted to stay somewhere really special as we have never traveled just the two of us together. Oh my gosh, it was worth every penny! The staff is top notch. Carter helped us at the front desk. He was very helpful and friendly and helped us with directions. Cheryl helped us at the concierge desk. She told us fun things to do around town and also agreed with our cousin that said we must do the architectural building boat tour. Cheryl gave us a card for Lou Malnati's Pizzeria-it was for a free appetizer or dessert-so that's where we had our lunch and got a free cookie pizza after our yummy pizza that was delicious! She also gave us discount cards for Macy's and Bloomingdales. (And I found a Rebecca Minkoff purse on sale at Bloomingdales and got to use my discount card on top of the sale price!) She also made our boat tour reservations and our dinner reservations at Le Colonial. She told us if we were running late to dinner, to let her know-they know the people at the restaurants and can accommodate us. Always check with the concierge-they are so helpful and usually have good tips and discounts. We thoroughly enjoyed Cheryl (and Carter too!). Also- Gina on staff-she was excellent! We told her that we needed to figure out the train to take to South Bend, Indiana for the wedding we were attending. Well she told us she would look into it while we were shopping and when we came back she had everything researched and written out and even drew out a map with info. Her writing was so perfect she looked like she had bought the card! I will enclose a picture. We were so impressed. Oh-the atmosphere of the hotel. Wonderful. Trendy, chic and comfortable at the same time. In the morning we didn't have a coffeemaker in our room but so glad we didn't as they had the most excellent coffee and tea in the lobby. Everything you would need! We ended up eating breakfast at their restaurant Nico Osteria after coffee. This hotel is in the cutest neighborhood. Loved all the brownstone buildings. The area is called the Gold Coast. Great shopping was everywhere in walking distance. Places all around to eat too, and lots of outdoor seating. Loved it. When we got back from dinner at El Colonial, we were so tempted to have a drink outside-it was Thursday night and so many people were out and about enjoying the weather-but we were too tired! Most overrated Hotel ever! When I booked the rooms after looking at the reviews and the pictures I was expecting at least a good customer service but from the moment I arrived, the worst customer service from the people at the reception that clearly lied about my only request of having different rooms booked close together. Not only they gave me one room in different floors but the attitude was horrible. The lobby could not be tinier because it was impossible, the restaurant was closed due to renovations but they only tell you that when it's too late to reschedule. A tiny grab and go next to the only restroom at the lobby, which did not smell good at all. The internet took forever to connect. Rooms were fine but not very user friendly. Only good thing was the shower and that is the one star review. I would pay more and go to a different Hotel, there are many around so having that location is not worth it. This place is thrumming with comfort. The bedding is lush, the lighting is easy on the eyes, and the bathroom with it's true waterfall shower is luxurious. Bath robes are readily nearby, too. A refrigerator and espresso maker with bottled water complete with spectacular views add to the atmosphere as does the entry foyer, bar and restaurant. Yes, the valet is $75/night, and the restaurant is $$$$-rated, but it's all comfort, all the way. Worth every bit. Service is on point! read more

Exhausted after a wedding party, I announced that I was going to the bar to grab a martini while I cleaned up but the bar was closed. One of Thompson's finest employees Ricardo Nieto overheard the conversation, called his manager Giuliano immediately, and asked him to make and deliver an espresso martini to me! I haven't seen this level of customer service since Miracle on 34th St. when Kris Kringle sent parents to Macy'c competitors for the toys that were out of stock. You think I'm joking...I'm not. In this day and age when people barely look up from their phones, a random act of kindness is quite unexpected and totally needed. Well-designed hotel with a good rate and in a convenient location. I had a king room with a nice lake view. The room was extremely bright, which I really liked. I didn't interact with the staff that much. The hotel seemed semi-busy. I just had 2 small issues. The TV channel guide is pretty outdated. My other issue was the lack of hot water in the shower. It was nice to be able to walk to a Starbucks on the block. I really appreciated how walkable this location is (especially if you're a big shopper since there's a Prada and Hermès nearby). read more

The Thompson hotel definitely curates your experience that you'll get as a Chicago visitor. The customer service has been the best I've ever received at any hotel. The gentlemen in the lobby will open doors for you and greet you politely. The night bar staff for my stay 12/15-12/18 has also been amazing. No matter how busy it got we always received delicious drinks from friendly personalities. When checking in I want to note and give special appreciation to the guy who checked us into our room. I feel so bad I never got his name but he was the night staff at about 6:00 on 5/15. I hope he can get proper recognition for being so professional and friendly. He set the tone for our trip and made sure we had the perfect room that met all of our needs. Very gorgeous, cozy, perfectly located hotel. In the city but also not in the busiest parts. We booked our room with the Thompson Chicago for 6 days, 5 nights based on a list I found on Thrillest naming it one of the top 15 hotels in Chicago. Upon arriving, Annie at the front desk asked what brought us to Chicago. We told her it was our first time in the city celebrating our 3 year wedding anniversary. Our room was on the 16th floor and was very spacious, clean, and had an amazing view of the city. Also, the decor is to die for. Very modern and trendy. Really cool boutique feel. The location of the Thompson is also convenient. Tons of amazing restaurants and shops close by and a short Uber/Lyft ride to all the main tourist attractions. We could have walked, but we're from California so we were not used to the cold brisk winds of Chicago. Instead of walking, we took a ride share 9 times out of 10, mainly because it snowed on our visit. After our first day of exploring the city we came back to our hotel room to find a bucket of champagne and a box of macaroons from Nico (their restaurant) along with a card from Annie and the front desk. Wow! Talk about going the extra mile! This definitely made an already awesome trip even better. I highly recommend this hotel. Five stars all the way!!!! read more

Had surprise birthday stay here... It was raining when we got here! Valet was quick to pick up our car, even informing us of self park option not even a block away for half the price. We decided to stick to valet anyways The staff was accommodating from the moment we parked. From the doorman helping us bring our things in, to front desk checking us in. The hospitality was great. Minutes after getting settled into our room we were surprised with a small cake and birthday note. These personal touches made the stay that much more wonderful. We were not just another check in. Thompson Chicago def. individualizes their guest's stay. I didn't get the chance to use the complimentary driver, because we had a friend get us, but I think that's a great touch. The hotel is in a great spot and everything is within a short radius. We didn't get a chance to drink at the bar, but it was beautiful! We did explore the hotel and go upstairs and the décor was great! Def. Instagram worthy, so get your shots in. The reason I gave 3 stars is $68 a night for parking and breakfast was $35 each (pancakes were 19 bucks!) plus hotel fees and a pre-added grat of $14 is nuts. After much research I booked a Suite at the Thompson for my birthday (also the first time in Chicago) Upon check in the front desk callously noted he did not have a suite available. He continued the check in process as if it were just no big deal. We asked him why and the response was (shrug) oversold. The manager came over after we requested intervention but to no avail. She also shrugged it off saying it was oversold and she would move us tomorrow. She wasn't apologetic or like "look guys let's make this right". Other hotels would have gotten us at least dinner. They ended up giving us a tiny room with a 2 double beds. They couldn't even give us a king. This is really poor customer service and management. I can't believe all of the good reviews. They didn't even have a bellhop to help us with bags. I'd like to do an update. While the above was unfortunate, Paul came in and saved the day. They comped us a night for the mix up and moved us into a Suite first thing the next morning. They also decorated the room with birthday balloons and cupcakes and a card. It was very appreciated. The Junior Suite they moved us too is a great corner room with a beautiful view of the city. Sometimes things happen but the way they are dealt with makes a huge impact. Rarely do you stay at a hotel that exceeds your expectations in every way. The hotel is beautifully decorated and it's Lobby has many areas for lounging which gives the hotel a comfortable and laid back feel, while still being upscale and trendy. The service is impeccable. Everyone is friendly and accommodating. The room is stylish and comfortable with two sitting areas. The bathroom is also comfortable. The walk in shower with rainfall shower head in the middle is spectacular. The hotel also offers complimentary morning coffee served in the main lobby bar area. We also dined at Nico which we did mostly because we were beat from a long day of site seeing. We thought it would be easy to get in since we were guest. To our surprise this restaurant is very popular and had no availability, however they tried to accommodate us by seating us at the Chefs table which I usually do not prefer, however we had great service. Our waitress/bartender was entertaining to watch while she prepared many cocktails for other guest. She also was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations for dinner. Our starters were the Chefs selection Crudos and Octopus Carpaccio. Both starters were top notch. The Crudos were each unique varying from sweet and citrusy to savory. Our entrees were the Arctic Char and the orecchiette with tuna sausage. I know the tuna sausage sounds strange, however the texture and taste did not fall short from your typical meat sausage. Both dishes were phenomenal. For dessert we had a light and refreshing dish Boccone Dolce which was made of different layers of Rhubarb, key lime cream, Merengue and Rhubarb sorbet. Nico is not your typical hotel restaurant. It offers unique and deliciously prepared dishes. Lastly I need to say that housekeeping was also superb. We left the room chaotic and returned to a perfect tidy room. Sonia even left us a nice note upon our return. I will definitely recommend and return on my next visit to Chicago. read more

Once again, if you look at most of the reviews you will see the hotel itself is very nice but this hotel lacks customer service experience in almost all the reviews! My bad experience was with the night manager, Brad. Not only did he keep me on hold for long periods at a time while he charged my credit card on file for 2 massages that I never received and never fully agreed to, but he had no consideration for the fact that I couldn't get my wife back to the hotel in time to get the massages done. This was suppose to be a surprise for my wife but it was ruined because of the lack of customer service that was given. You have been warned! Splurged on a two story suite for my wedding weekend. Needed a room with a decent amount of seating as my bridesmaids and I would be getting ready in the room. And chose the Thompson because it looked very sleek in the online photos. Arrived to find many issues with the room - which was $900/night. 1) deep scratches on the floor that were 2-3ft long 2) seating was not as pictured. Pictures showed a sofa and chair and a table with 4 chairs. In reality there was a dirty sofa, and chair. No other table with 4 chairs. 3) there is a 'minibar' in the room but it is not stocked with anything and also isn't cooled so is useless. 4) the bedroom is upstairs and there was a 4ft area of the carpeted floor that was soaking wet. 5) the room was quite dated and not well kept - the leather arm chair was rubbed down, there were stains on drapes So, the morning of my wedding, I woke up early to ask for more chairs, a mini fridge, and someone to figure out the wet floor. Mismatched chairs were delivered and maintenance put towels down on the wet floor. This room was not worth the money and I would not recommend others stay here. We had a room block at the Sofitel down the street and I wish we had gotten a suite there or at the Four Seasons instead. read more

I brought 6 girlfriends downtown to celebrate my 40th birthday and booked 3 rooms for 1 night on April 10th. We checked out in a hurry and I realized I left a $200+ hairdryer on the bottom shelve of the bathroom vanity. When I called to ask if house keeping could check to put it aside, the front desk said they would look into it and call me back. Shortly after I received a call saying it wasn't left in the room. I have left things behind at other hotels and they have always been collected to be returned. Shady and dishonest establishments are not where I want to spend my money. read more

Upon arrival I asked for a complimentary upgrade. After some talk back and forth the staff confirmed they could upgrade one of the two rooms. Instead of waiting for the rooms we went to lunch and came back a few hours later. Upon coming back, the staff was very rude and acted as if we had yet to check in. We had to waste more time checking back in (the second time) and then said the complimentary upgrade the room we were confirmed having was since booked. This boggled my mind how someone could book our room after we checked in. The front desk lady had alluded that our bags would be in the room. They weren't and we were late dinner. We had multiple holds on our credit cards after checking in multiple times. For a 24 hour trip, we just wasted too much time with the check in process. After checking in for the second time, the lady behind front desk whom we had never spoke started berating us and screaming at us. She was far from hospitable and acted as if we were guilty of some wrong doing for being frustrated that our rooms weren't ready. We realized they got the credit cards wrong even on the second check in and they charged us 7 times for 1 room. One would think this would be resolved immediately. It actually took multiple follow up contact points after the trip to correct it. I notified them my room had a very foul strong odor. They said they sprayed it and never checked back in to see if the issue was resolve. It was not resolved and we had a horrible sleep due to the overwhelming nauseating odor. Upon check out, they tried to get us to check in a third time claiming the cards on file were wrong and wanted us to go through this process all over again. I have stayed at Nashville, Cabo Thompsons and had great experiences. Unfortunately, this was a one star all around. We left the property with a horrible experience and many unresolved issues and will not be back. The management should have offered a remedy for terrible experience. Leaving issues unresolved and staff having a "me versus you" mentality caused for a horrific experience. There's plenty of hotels in Chicago, don't waste you time with this one. They really should have offered a resolution for a one night stay gone bad as I have never had so many things go wrong (credit card fiasco, failure to have rooms ready, rude staff, foul odor in room, ect.) Upon deciding I would go to Chicago for a Christmas vacation, I did my fair share of research for many properties in the prime areas and after much thinking, I opted to stay at the Thompson Chicago (my first time at a Thompson property). There were many star notes towards this property such as the location, treatment from staff (ex: doorman always opening the door) and the great turndown service. Upon touching down in Chicago, I reached out to the hotel (early AM) and they confirmed that my suite was ready (which was excellent)! As I (my car service) pulled up to the hotel (and due to reading other reviews) I expected the hotels outside crew to assist me with my luggage and direct me to the front desk - this did not happen, I handled my own luggage and did not get greeted by a doorman - Yes, I could handle my own luggage but I choose to stay at certain properties to get 5 star service. After checking in, I was not offered or assisted to getting to my room, I was given my key, room number and advised as to how the bathroom meter worked - not usually what I'm accustomed to as typically a hotel employee would show you to your room and make sure that everything is to your liking, also because the water tool involved in the shower stall required some advanced instructions, why not instruct this in the room instead of at check in! The Room... I reserved a Corner Suite room (which was what I was given) and it was nice! I believe it's about 450 sq ft, has floor to ceiling windows around the entire room, huge bed, faux middle carpet, large sofa, LED TV with cable, a lot of lighting, bathroom both a shower stall and huge lay in tub! I asked for a mini refrigerator and upon having to remind the front desk of the original request, one was sent up and worked perfectly. There are USB ports next to the bed so you can charge your devices. Room service was OK as I never had an issue and nothing ever came up missing (lol). The views are great from these suites, you get a good view of the city and premier stores such as Barneys! The Hotel... I really love the overall design, once you walk in, you will encounter a lovely and huge area of couches which is an invitation to just sit and have some great conversation with your friends and family. The hotel is also home to a wonderful Italian restaurant by the name of NICO which is a must try. There are two bar areas - one on the first floor which is available to everybody and has plenty of seating and then there is a second bar on the second floor for private events! Upper floors consists of the gym, computer area, multiple event rooms and I believe a floor dedicated to weddings! The hotel also has complimentary car service but when I asked different people about it (the front desk)... I was given different time frames. In my opinion the car service should be available everyday from let's say 8am - 11pm instead of Mon - Thu it will be available in the AM and then during the weekend they will have later hours involved... Too much of a mess, just have solid hours everyday and first come first serve by calling down! Overall it's a great hotel, it's located in the Gold Coast neighborhood which has many premier restaurants and stores within a few inches of just walking out the door, it's also a block away from the magnificent mile which is home to sooooo many stores for some excellent shopping. I just felt that I was paying a premium price only for location and not for proactive services such as turndown service, better timeframes for car service, having the doorman always opening the door and a more engaging staff. I'll be honest in saying that this will not be my first or even second selection when in Chicago, maybe the Langham property spoiled me too much, however I will say that this is your place if your all about the location for retail therapy and good bites! read more

It was right next to the elevators but the solid and well insulated construction of the walls kept me from hearing much of anything outside my room. I remember the previous manager Amala, a really sweet and nice lady on my last stay at Sutton Place, about a year ago. She said this hotel would shut down and remodeled. I didn't know it would changed the brand too. Thompson is quite a nice and chic brand, 60 Thompson Street in Manhattan with chef Kittchai Thai restaurant back in the day, 10 years ago, was such a hot spot with roof top view of NYC. Then Thompson Beverly Hills, and now Chi Town. A lot had changed since, the lobby lounge is swanky, chic, and good vibe. The front desk check in is still small. The lobby lounge is comfortable couches, books, and plenty of picture frames on the walls. What used to be the Whiskey Bar now a new Italian restaurant Nico Osteria is ONE OFF HOSPITALITY GROUP which owns Black Bird, Avec, The Violet Hour, The Publican and Big Star in Chicago. Thompson Chicago sits at the intersection of State Street and Rush Street, steps from Michigan Avenue's shopping, Oak Street's boutiques and downtown's dining and nightlife. The Gold Coast hotel overlooks the vast blue expanse of Lake Michigan and boasts views of the city's sparkling skyline from many of its 247 rooms. I checked in and the manager Amala was there to greet me and she remembers me, that's amazing. This is the kind of hospitality will bring clients back for more. She upgraded me to the suite, THANK YOU. My suite was big, bathtub, shower with modern rain showerheads (reminds me of the Bellagio spa), a nice couch, luxurious velvet sofas, ,and upscale bath and spa products by REN. The bed was comfortable, and I love the Small and Large slippers for his & her in black :-) Complimentary luxury car service when I need to be drop off nearby, and 24-hour in-room dining (reminds me of Vegas), the doorman is extremely nice and polite. I never once had to open the door in 24 hours staying here :-) Came from 4 nights at the Four Seasons, to this swanky chic hotel, I didn't expect much, but Thompson Chicago surely exceed the hospitality, customer service, and too the restaurant Nico Osteria, from the front desk to the doorman, to from the bartender to the hostess, I was impressed. I simply ADORE this stylish, comfortable and personality filled hotel. My Mom and I came to the Thompson a few months ago to attend a nearby benefit at the House of Blues Chicago. I'm not sure I have ever loved a hotel the way I love the Thompson. The rooms are so comfortable...I confidently can say that this is the best sleep I've ever had in a hotel. Lush, large beds with soft linens and semi-firm mattresses really seal the deal. Fantastic local art and ultra modern furnishings adorn the rooms, and some standard rooms even have extended seating areas with sectional couches that overlook interesting city views. The bathroom also had extremely modern and large showers with awesome complimentary C.O. Bigelow toiletries. Best of all, the walls are super thick and the rooms are quiet. The common areas of this hotel are the equivalent to a high-end art gallery. On your way to the hotel bar (which makes strong drinks, has great seating and good conversation), you'll love the modern and contemporary pieces that line the hallways. The Thompson has a hip, upscale flair that makes Chicago feel uniquely fun and interesting. Its also located in a true sweet spot of downtown Chicago--a short walking distance from restaurants and high-end luxury shopping, and a short uber from anything else. Visited a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved this place although we did have an issue upon check in that could have really soured the experience. We had paid for a lake view king bed room. Pre-paid! We arrived and they said we had 2 double beds. Nope. They looked again and said, oh yeah, we see you have a king bed. At this point, we're looking up our rez and remember we booked the lake view also. They then say they don't have any of those. We overbooked the hotel. I don't know why hotels think this is an acceptable excuse or reason. It never is. Anyhow, they found us a vacant room that was what we booked and explained that someone checking in after us would get screwed. So not great... The location of this hotel is stellar although you should plan to use Uber instead of taxis because taxis can be hard to get. You step out and there are street cafes and restaurants everywhere. It was perfect weather so they all had outdoor seating. And it felt swanky. Makes you just want to sit down and get a glass of wine or bubbly. The room was great, the lobby was wonderful, the restaurant downstairs had great hours, etc. etc. Would definitely stay here again although I would hope that they would take care to not overbook since it only leads to an unhappy clientele. read more

Beautiful boutique hotel with great service. The people who work there really are lovely. I gave it three stars because of their gratuitous valet charges, even for service providers. I'm a traveling hairstylist. I visited the Thompson to do a wedding party. The wedding was being held there. I was there for four hours and ended up paying close to $30 to use the valet. Other hotels and wedding venues provide exceptions for weddings and service providers. Still, I would not be happy paying the rates for valet if I was a guest there. The overnight charge is insanity! read more

Stayed here December 15th - 18th and lived every minute. The hotel is very Beautiful, the staff was amazing, from the doormen to the reception desk and even the maintenance guy. The decor was great, and the vibe in the lobby was very cozy. We had a King Corner Suite on the 18th floor and my brothers had a Superior Lakeview Double on the 21st. The views were amazing and the rooms so cozy. Loved the bathrooms and the bed and the sitting furniture as well. I will be back because I cannot think of any other hotel. read more

I really enjoy the Thompson hotel collection in LA/NYC, which is why I was pleased to see a Thompson Chicago. The renovated Sutton Place is on point. Large rooms. modern space, great shower and bathroom. ps: Solid housekeeping. I enjoyed the bar in the lobby and the award winning restaurant, Nico Osteria. I like how they serve Italian style breakfast. I did hear people complain about it's Italian focused breakfast menu for that I say "suck it up or ciao" They do serve almond milk for those who care. read more

This is a nice hotel in the heart of the Gold Coast located at the intersection of Rush and Bellevue. It's a cozy blend of industrial modern chic with a little bit of a restoration hardware vibe. I liked we had HBO and I was able to catch the latest episode of GOT on our recent visit. It also has a fantastic restaurant at the base along with some other good eats nearby. The bed was comfortable but the A/C vent situation needed some help. I had it down to 65 and it never got that cold. It would also shut off randomly even though I set the fan to run 100% of the time for white noise and cooling purposes. There was also, ahem, an awkward stain on the navy blue armchair that resembled bodily fluid. We promptly covered that with a hand towel for the majority of our stay.It's not the Four Seasons but nice nonetheless. Shopping nearby is Oak Street - Versace, Hermes, Barneys and other stores I don't set foot inside. Christian Louboutin is around the block as well. There's also Hugo's Frog Bar, a giant Starbucks, Maple and Ash, DelFriscos, Gibsons, Fig and Olive etc. The beach is also two blocks away along with lovely walks through the neighborhood to see beautiful brownstones and other historic home marvels. I would stay here again if looking for a quieter hotel that's conveniently located near all that Chicago (and the Gold Coast) has to offer. read more

I stayed here for 2 nights and 3 days for a work summit and enjoyed it. The staff was great!! The rooms were comfortable enough to share but the sink didn't drain as fast as I'd like. -Dog friendly hotel -Near shipping and dining (Lou Malnati's Pizza across the street) -Friendly staff My stay was during the World Series and you can feel the love this city has for their Cubs. Pretty cool to be around. Chicago is absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to go back. read more
