Wow. lived in Chicago my whole life...walked by this place a lot. We moved out of the city a decade ago. On a recent visit, I heard they were doing renovations so my husband and I stopped in to check things out. The rooms are spectacular and the bar is cozy and amazing. the Lobby was cute and quaint but the best part was Ben who worked the front desk. He took the time to show us around the gym and room options...was so helpful, warm and went out of his way. Whenever we come to town to visit family, this is the place we will be staying. Stayed here on a cross-country road trip. This hotel is located downtown and there is no street parking or hotel self-parking. They do offer valet parking for $85 valet. We ended up using a public parking structure about a quarter mile away ($22/day). Now this is a pet friendly hotel and there's even a water bowl and treats right by the check-in desk for your dog. Located amongst the downtown area, this hotel is a little pricey. Our room was nice and comfy. We checked in late so they let us sleep in and check out late at no additional charge. There's a small restaurant on the main floor that has a small bar if you're looking for a late night drink. We didn't partake so I can offer any advice on it. Overall, this was a decent hotel. My fiance and me stayed at the Talbott a few weeks ago. This was one of the worst hotel experiences we've ever had. When we checked into our room, there was already a stain on the carpet. We even noticed it and thought it was odd but , but never imagined it would later be used against us. After checkout, the hotel charged her card $1,200 for "damages" -- without ever giving us a chance to explain or dispute it. When we called to address it, the front desk manager was completely cocky, arrogant, and dismissive. He kept repeating that this was "their process" and made it clear he had no interest in hearing our side. No dated photos, no proof, no transparency -- just a big charge dumped onto her card. No reputable hotel should ever put a guest in a room with pre-existing damage and then bill them as if they caused it. The way we were treated was unacceptable and shows a total lack of respect for loyal Marriott members who stay multiple nights a week. I would strongly caution anyone considering this property -- the management's attitude and approach to guests is absolutely unacceptable. read more

We really enjoyed our stay here this past weekend. Boutique trendy feel made it very warm and welcoming. Best part was its location just a couple blocks off Michigan Ave and near water tower place, shopping and restaurants all walkable and safe. Classy feeling area for the city. More pricey hotels next door like 4 seasons, Westin etc. this being a Marriott property it was just as nice but more cost friendly. Friendly staff and bell hop / valet worked his butt off running back and forth and helping everyone he could on his own. We valet parked it but saw parking walkable near by but we had already paid for the night. We couldn't tip the guy enough, it was just that great. We had a light dinner in the restaurant and a couple glasses of wine and it was very good with good selection too. Bartender was helpful and friendly. TVs with World Series and College football on so that was cool too. Menu was limited in my opinion struggled deciding what sounded appetizing but our salads were good. Our room was small but we didn't need a lot of space. Beds were comfortable and when we asked for an extra pillow they brought one up in like 2 minutes. read more

Wow! What a cute doll house hotel in the Gold Coast/Magnificent Mile neighborhood. This adorable, boutique hotel offers charm and character. The lobby on this visit was decorated in sexy, loungey Christmas decor. It was so comfortable and unique. Right across they way is the small restaurant that was fantastic as well. Arriving and checking in was very easy and pleasant. The doormen/valet were very friendly. Taylor at the front desk was incredible. He was cordial and helpful beyond expectations. Our room was huge. The bathroom offered double sinks. The beds were very comfortable and all areas of the room were very clean. I will definitely return for another visit. read more

The hotel is beautiful. Small and quaint with adorable seating areas. Check in was simple and service from that end was great! Lots to walk around to and the beachfront is really close by. The other reviews are not wrong...restaurant service is terrible and over priced for what you recieve in terms of service and food quality. Great for slow sipping a drink and people watching. The elevators are really slow and it didn't spoil the visit. I think if the restaurant staff had an overhaul, this place would be worlds better. But in terms of a city hotel that feels safe and nice with easy access- I'd totally stay again! read more

I'd give this a 4 if it were a 3-star hotel, but it wouldn't even measure fully up to that. When we were not in our room, this place was lovely with friendly staff and a fantastic restaurant. Small-scale lobby because it's boutique, quirky elevators because it's an old building, but perfect. BUT. A tiny queen room with barely room to move around the bed. No drawers or cabinets for clothes. We had to pile our things on the floor. No shelves or drawers in the bathroom, and a small counter to crowd our things onto. A huge closet with no lights but no rack to put things on. No ironing board or iron (though there was a handheld steamer). A cheap mattress and imitation-down comforter exactly like a 3-star hotel, though the sheets were a little nicer. Still not 4-star. Only 2 full-size towels and 1 washcloth, and no extras left when we asked for extras the next day. TV with cable channels, and the guide said "no information" for every one of them. No other menu options except there WAS an Apple TV box attached to the HDMI, but that means nothing but the channels for half the people who stay there. The air comes from a strong wall vent pointed straight at the pillows, and you can't adjust intensity or direction. They say there's a mini fridge but it's a wine cooler with the temperature locked at 54° so your food goes rotten. No microwave. For $381, even in this lovely neighborhood, we expected to enjoy being in our room but it was stingy and boring. read more

This review is solely for the lounge/bar. Truly a case of being hidden in plain sight, as this spot was not on my radar as offering happy hour specials until I moseyed by one afternoon and noticed the menu posted on one of the windows (fyi: there is live music starting in January, 6 pm on Fridays). The lounge area is tucked away, off the main lobby-- much appreciated in winter as it gives a person a chance to put away their cold-weather accessories and get somewhat combobulated before venturing to the bar area. The specials are $8 cocktails (Old Fashioned and Cosmopolitans) and $8 glasses of Prosecco. The crowd mostly skews to tourists, but I found it to be a relaxed, convivial spot. The holiday decor and views of the streetside bustle added to the festive feel. I wish the chairs at the bar would have had backs but otherwise an awesome happy hour experience. read more

Construction started on the rooms above us at 7:00am on Christmas Eve, no communication from the hotel. Sounded like a plane was landing on the roof. We asked to move rooms, which was accommodated, and we moved ourselves to a new room. The staff is nice, but scarce. We attempted to leave a message on the G.M. voicemail, which was full. Tired property. One elevator which is really slow and torn and ripped furniture in the lobby. No attention to detail. $300.00 a room night. NOT worth it in the least. Just got back to the hotel...new room key not working...omg Christmas Morning (we are checking out today) a room attendant attempted to come into the room as we were sleeping. We are on vacation , woken early on Christmas Eve by construction, woken early on Christmas morning by staff attempting to enter our room. The bar is closed (lost the liquor license), and the restaurant is not worth the prices. Something has changed here (in the last three weeks). The front desk is closed, and the staff is not in any uniforms. My room for the 1 pm check-in was not ready at 4 pm. Then my "Upgraded Suite" is as bare bones as it gets. The room has NOTHING to it. That includes the nine channels of tv (non-in HD) that they provide. I just checked out of a Hampton Inn (in Wisconsin) for $109 a night that BLOWS this place away regarding cleanliness and amenities. My soap for the room was as bargain basement as it gets (a small generic chip). I'm SOOOOOOOOOO DISAPOINTED. I can't believe this is a Marriott Autograph hotel. It's TERRIBLE! I'm a Titanium Marriott member for Life. I travel all the time, and this is by FAR the worst hotel I have stayed in this year. Just sad! NOTHING about this stay states "Luxury." UPDATE... I called two times for housekeeping to restock my room (including toilet paper as I only have a 1/2 roll). No one came. After 90 minutes, I went down and asked again, and I was told they were on the way. I walked into the room 4 hours later. NO / NADA any products or toilet paper!!!!!! The food was decent, although the burger was way too raw even though I asked for medium rare. It was more like rare! Almost inedible. I liked how they have a nespresso machine in the room. Bed was comfy enough, but not amazing. Rooms are small, but clean. I think overall, it's a decent hotel to stay at, but not mind blowing. Overall, this is a great place. Had a slight odor in the room when I arrived but it seemed to dissipate once I turned the air down and I never noticed it again. this is an older hotel that's recently been refurbished. They've really done a nice job with the upgrades. The water is good and hot and the faucets work well. Water is hot instantly out of the shower and sink and there's good water pressure. You get a free breakfast with your stay, at least I did. And it's actually amazing. See picture. The toast is incredible. It's almost like they bake their own bread. I wonder if they do. read more

This is the "plush" bed in the Murphy suite. Warning - the bed is not comfortable. I may as well have slept on the floor this mattress is thin and hard. Additionally, there is not a table in this room so if ordering room service, expect to stand & eat or sit on the rock hard bed & eat. Overall very dissatisfied with the room. The hotel restaurant also disappointing. I ordered the watermelon salad for room service- it came without 1/2 the ingredients. When dining in the restaurant, the waiter was slow to respond, the food average & the price expensive. read more

This place is just a motel. Don't get fooled by the price. Housekeeping is nonexistent, the front desk is barely awake, the bar is a joke; turning up the brights at 10:30 because of a made-up, in-house cutoff time. This place is a slop-the-tourists dive with no management to speak of and no direction at the top. It did not have bedbugs to my knowledge, thus the two stars instead of one. Building is A+ Management is F Staff is C-, but could be better with direction I have stayed in enough Marriott properties to be Titanium, this is my first complaint or written review. read more

My daughter and I love this hotel so much we came twice in one week. The first time we visited the hotel we did have an issue with valet but the front desk staff it was absolutely amazing and handled the situation immediately and stayed on the phone with the valet company until my vehicle was retrieved. My daughter and I were planning on coming downtown the following week, and decided to switch hotels to the Talbott because we enjoyed our first day so much! The staff is wonderful, the restaurant and bar area is adorable as well and the rooms are nicely decorated. You receive a $17 credit for the restaurant +2 free drinks as well during their happy hour, what a deal! The hotel is also pet friendly. We will be returning in a couple weeks, and my daughter and I can't wait to come back! I think this might be our new favorite hotel downtown! read more

Wonderful hotel in a great location. From the helpful doorman at arrival until the time we left, the staff were gracious and capable of solving every problem imaginable. Our room was pretty and pristine, a welcome respite after two years of pandemic. The room was not large (14 feet by 11 feet with a queen bed and a large closet) but it was perfect for our needs at an excellent price. One of the nicest elements was the quiet, efficient and easily adjustable climate control system, a necessity for hot summer and cold winter weather. By the way, the in room refrigerator was cold and silent and the TV was large and easy to use. The bathroom was clean and comfortable. It was the first bathroom I remember where the mirror did not fog up after I took a long hot shower. I stayed at the Talbott 15 years ago and there have been several ownership changes since then. One of the things I remember is that they had delicious complementary coffee and I am truly grateful to say that they still do. It makes a good start to the morning after a restful night's sleep. read more

Friendly staff , decently close to magnificent mile but nothing else stands out about this hotel, tiny lobby and musty smell to the whole hotel because everything is carpeted and terrible air ventilation. Room was advertised as a suite lol it was an absolute joke, worse than a normal room elsewhere with crappy views and bad furniture and no coffee machine , just awful all around and wasn't completely clean , will try to avoid this place in the future , not a fan. An incredibly uninspiring experience when I stayed there for 3 nights recently Let's start with a very simple fact, this hotel is OLD, and the level of renovation they have attempted can not change the age of the building and the inherent limitations it has. For starters, the lobby is small and cramped, the two elevators are very small and slow, and there is no service elevator. Because this is an older building rooms start on the second floor, and in my case on the third floor at the back side of the building, which means you are overlooking the alley way a loading dock for the Waldorf which is on the other side of the block. This means lots of noise late at night and early in the morning as behind the scenes operations like garbage collection and linen deliveries occur. As for the room itself, it was in fair condition. The door to the bathroom wouldn't close all the way, the shower curtain should've been replaced two years prior, the towels were horrible, and despite being a fairly large room with a sleeper sofa, there wasn't another chair or a desk in the room, just a bench at the end of the bed, and a table in front of the sofa that was too tall to be useful when seated. Overall I fell that the Talbott should have been closed decades ago and either turned into condos, or the building should have been torn down and a new building built in its place. Other than the location, I have to honestly say that the Talbott has nothing worthwhile to offer, even the cow parade cow that had been climbing the front of the building for nearly two decades has given up on the Talbott and has gone in search of greener pastures, you should too. read more

Robbed us of our upgrade awards and overcharged our credit card. If you stay at this hotel and ask for an upgrade beware they will not give you a suite instead they will "upgrade" you to a "king studio" ( a room with 50 more square foot) BUT they will charge you for a FULL upgrade! Also if you plan to stay at this hotel check your bill we were also over charged in the restaurant, which had we not caught we would not have received a refund. Most of the restaurant workers and the bell staff were very friendly and accommodating. That being said look out for the female guest service worker at the front desk...... I would rather incounter a hyena in the wild, than this hatefully, rude, woman who obviously cares nothing about customer service. My husband a I have been Titanium Elite member for the last 7 years, but are planning to switch back to Hilton Honors. Marriott Bonvoy customer service is horrific and the benefits are not as grand as Hilton. With the rundown conditions of a lot of the Marriott properties we have seen ( we have over a 100 stays so far in 2024) and the training (or lack there of) of their staff Marriott needs to take a hard look at something other than their bottom line. read more

It was late into Labor Day week and after calling a bunch of hotels around the area, this was the only one that wasn't sold out or the price was under $300 (I also called a handful of other hotels in the area that claimed their hours of operation are 24/7 but never answered the phone...) room was clean other than the black hair on the towel pictured -- I have long blonde hair the hair pictured is short and brown. Hotel went thru very tough time during Covid and George Floyd riots. They welcomed lots of seedy guests then and the restaurant was awful. No service, 2 dishes on menu but neighborhood regulars kept the doors open to be loyal. Now that they are a Marriott Bonvoy biz is good again but Robert, the restaurant's new manager is rude and awful to the regulars that kept the place open for the past 2 years. Shame on him for telling us to make reservations when lots of empty tables open! Avoid this experience. When things were bad we dodged the cockroaches and now we can't get a table read more

TL,DR: Aging but nice enough hotel with miserable management. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere. The whole story: The room was nice enough for an aging downtown hotel. All of the service people were very nice, too. But all the good will the Talbott had established was destroyed at checkout. I presented a Marriott Bonvoy gift card. The young man at the desk couldn't get it to work, so he called a young woman. She tried for a minute or two, then told me, "I'm off the clock. It's your gift card, so you have to call them." I asked her to call, but she repeated that it was my gift card and she was off the clock. Never in my decades traveling with Marriott have I been told someone can't help me because they are off the clock, especially since I achieved Bonvoy Titanium level. When I called the number on the gift card, they asked why I was calling. They said they could only talk to the people at the hotel. I asked the first young man for the name of the young woman's boss. He gave me a name, and a title "Director of Operations," By now the young woman, off the clock, was gone, but the young man talked with the card company for a few minutes. With no success and a line backing up to check in, he told me he would continue to work on it and let me know his progress, but he never did. The next week I tried reaching out to the Director of Operations. I called three times, and she couldn't be bothered to call me back. On one occasion I was told I'd get a call within 15 minutes. I sat next to the phone with my earbuds in for 75 minutes. When I called back, I was told she planned to call me "when she had time." 75 more vacation minutes wasted! So I left a message saying I was on vacation and difficult to reach by phone. I asked that she send me a text with a time she would be able to speak with me. I have received neither call nor text. With all the time and aggravation I have spent on the Talbott, there is no remedy they could offer that would make things right. My only recourse is to leave lots of reviews to save other travelers the miserable experience I had. read more

My husband and I were on our way through Chicago on the way to Door County, WI & stayed at the Talbott. The Talbott has always been one our favorite boutique hotels in Chicago & I was concerned when I read the recent Yelp reviews. That was silly. Our stay was delightful. The room was larger than expected, with a comfortable bed with one firm & one soft pillow for each of us. The bathroom was also updated from our last stay & nicely appointed. The towels in the bathroom were soft and fluffy. Our room was on the 3rd floor and was quiet. Free coffee was available in the lobby in the morning & it was very good. The staff was friendly, greeting us in the elevator, helping us stuff giant luggage into our Uber and competently problem solving the usual issues. If you're expecting any hotel to be fully staffed post-COVID? Your expectations are unrealistic. That said, the Talbott seemed adequately staffed with a hard working, helpful staff. We had a lovely stay and I'd highly recommend this hotel to friends! read more
