In spite of being in business a few years, it's evident that Thinking Cup has rapidly gained much favor among locals and students. Thinking Cup serves up coffee in a variety of classic forms from Portland, Oregon based Stumptown Coffee Roasters, primarily pulling Hair Bender Espresso. My visit came as an education for Thinking Cup's baristas. Among specialty coffee circles, the 'One and One' (created by Jared Truby, Verve Coffee Roasters) has become a well-known beverage that exposes a barista's skill. The One and One can only be accomplished with a dual-spout portafilter as the shot is split into two demitasse cups/glasses effectively creating two beverages: A single shot espresso and a single shot macchiato. When my time came to order, asked if they used a dual-spout portafilter. Upon learning that Thinking Cup employs these portafilters, I proceeded to order my One and One Water-backed and a Cappuccino. Playing along as if my order was understood, the barista taking my order slowly exhibited perplexity in his visage. Taking a few more moments, he finally asked me, "I'm so sorry, but what is a "One and One Water-backed?" After my explanation, he became quite relieved and after paying, he thanked me for enlightening him. He then instructed the barista working the 3 Group La Marzocco GB/5 what my order was. Perplexed, he asked the cashier what a One and One was. I had to chime in and explain my order to him. I come here for one reason: Macarons. No, I did not spell macaroons incorrectly. Macarons are meringue-based confectioneries made with almonds. In essence, they are super-gourmet cookie sandwiches. Macaroons, conversely, are small cakes usually made with coconut. Several years ago, cupcakes exploded. More recently, it is the macaron that is trending. They are pretty, and delicious. Unfortunately, they are small and also expensive (usually $2-3 EACH) - definitely designed to be appreciated rather than engulfed. And apparently in Boston, they are difficult to find. Living downtown, I have yelped for nearby macarons, and most locations are either out of business or never have macarons. (-_-). Thinking Cup is the only one that does in the area, and they do so consistently. The macarons here are good, and are definitely the best-looking. They have many flavors to choose from, and I suppose they have seasonal ones, too. There are only 2 problems. 1. They stuff multiple macarons in a plastic pouch upon order. This is akin to dumping random slices of cake into a bag. Each should be separated somehow, as is standard. 2. The staff always says "macaroons". I order "# macarons, please" and they always respond with "macaroons? what kind". I then make it a point to say, for example "can I get a chocolate macaRON, a pistachio macaRON, etc...," but they respond with their own emphatic "macaROON". UGH. There is even a big sign that only has one "O" there. To top it off, some will say it in a condescending tone. /rant. (^_^) Only macaron place in the area (^_^) Presentation (^_^) Variety (-_-) Service (-_-) Bang for buck (takes into account packaging) Glad I came, but then again, for macarons, I don't have much of a choice. If you're willing to step off the beaten commercial coffee path, you'll discover a great cup of joe. They also serve sandwiches, pastries and a variety of sweets. I love exploring for cafés and coffee shops and one day I happened to stumble upon Thinking Cup! I really like this place. The fresh aroma of coffee beans once you step in is captivating. I can spend all day here drinking my latté and eating a few pastries, while studying. I like the décor and atmosphere of this place. Thinking cup also serves sandwiches and other food selections but I did not get a chance to try it yet! The latté is really good! It has a chocolatey flavor with good aroma. They also make a cute heart design for each cup. It makes it more pleasant sipping out of this cup of latté. :) The only downside is that thinking cup does not provide free wifi but I can still spend a long time studying here. Thinking Cup is in close proximity to some of Boston's best coffee shops. Despite this fact, it's almost impossible to find a single seat. One often has to sit with strangers. Comfort level with this decidedly European practice depends on one's level of introversion. This location's employees are helpful and friendly. Indeed, one barista interrupted our conversation with counsel that I should go grab a free seat. Due to its popularity, Thinking Cup is not an ideal venue for meeting up with another party. After shopping around downtown, we were in dire need to sit and relax and keep ourselves warm. Great little coffee shop across from the Boston Commons. It was raining quite a bit outside so we decided to duck inside and have some breakfast. We were lucky enough to find a table but it seemed like a lot of other people were also searching for a place to sit down and eat. Although this may be a coffee shop, it seems as if they serve a lot of food as well based off their menu. The service was pretty friendly and we got our food within 10-15 minutes even though it was quite a busy weekend morning. I ordered the smoked salmon on bagel. A simple open faced bagel, I chose an everything bagel, with cream cheese, smoked salmon, arugula, slice of tomato, and red onions. The bagel tasted exactly like what I was expecting and couldn't have asked for anything more. The smoked salmon was good and the other ingredients tasted fresh. My girlfriend ordered the sausage breakfast burrito. This was also a solid choice and pretty straightforward as to what you get. read more

On my recent trip to Boston, my favourite breakfast was from the Thinking Cup! This is a great little shop with many baked goods, breakfast dishes and delicious coffee and tea options. I loved the interior decor and the French romantic music playing in the background. I ordered the egg and sausage breakfast sandwich and a chai latte. My husband ordered the breakfast burrito, lemon glazed scone and a vanilla latte. My breakfast sandwich was made to order and sooo deliciously fresh! My chai latte had the perfect amount of sweetness and cinnamon spices! My husband really enjoyed his burrito but mentioned that he wished that the beans were warm like the other ingredients in it. Rus and I had a few hours to kill before heading back to NYC from Boston. He was in the mood for an iced coffee and I am always in the mood for a cafe...For me really, "cafe" is a verb and I loved to cafe. I like to toil over a cup of something that I will drink too slowly and it will therefore get cold before I finish it. I like to talk for hours with friends about the world going by, wasting our youth on biscotti and perhaps some in-house granola. Yes, "cafe" is a verb and the Thinking Cup understands it quite well. Lots of tables for sitting, lots of baristas for serving, lots of teas, coffees, and the iced coffee is made correctly (toddy style -- which I snobbishly appreciate), cupcakes, sandwiches...Yes, you've died and gone to cafe heaven! We each got a small iced coffee, it was terribly delicious. Not sweet, not too much ice, just perfect. The bathrooms were very clean and chique! We were not rushed or jostled. This place does seem to get rather crowded though...And not very many electric outlets. I long to have a place like this in NY...where I can cafe all day. read more

I am glad I finally found a good coffee shop in Boston. I love coming here to study. It is so relaxing and the ambiance is perfect. This place is always busy and there are random rushes. But surprisingly, I always manage to find a table to sit. WOOHOO! I haven't tried a lot of their pastries but I really liked their maple pecan and bacon scone. I usually get their latte and it is perfect. The first time I got their iced coffee, it was kind of bland, but the second time was perfect. The prices are reasonable too. It's $4 something for their medium size lattes, less than $3.00 for their medium iced coffee. The only downside is there isn't wifi. But it depends on how you look at it. It works for me because I won't get distracted with the evil internet! This place is close to my school too and it is right across from Boston Commons so you get a pretty view. The best part of this place is they play the music I usually listen to when I study--a mixture of jazz and they even throw in a couple of trance songs here and there. How awesome is that? Their bathrooms are really clean. And it's so cute too because they put a picture of Marilyn Monroe to signify that it is the women's bathroom and Albert Einstein with his tongue sticking out for the men's bathroom. Have you been trying to find decent coffee out here in the land of "over flavored, iced, crushed, and sweetened and creamed to the maximum dressed up and TRYING to pretend like it's coffee? Well then... Here's the story, plain and simple... I moved to Boston from Portland, Oregon last June. People ask me all the time, "Why?!" being as it may, Portland is full of wonderful, robust, and high quality coffee houses at no shortage...walk down NE Alberta Street and see the likes of many pitstops where you can get your espresso fix (or tea, bubble tea, or screwdriver...yes at the coffee houses..) with all the fixed gears parked outside and beautiful hipsters clothed in tattoos working on their shiny macs, or reading some form of philosophy books. I miss that. More importantly, I've missed good coffee. Dunken is great- but it's like going on a Road Trip and you hit up the next Truckers Stop to get your caffeine fix. The moment I walked into the, "Thinking Cup" the robust smell and sense that I am oh SO familiar with traveled alongside in a river under my nose. "It smells like coffee in here...real coffee...it smells of home!" To where I glanced up and saw a "Stumptown" sign above the (real genuine) espresso machine. And not only do they have great coffee (*and sell it too*) but they also have a wonderful pastry selection, and the breakfast sandwich I got was yummy annnnd affordable. I made a fool of myself gloating and gleaming with Northwest Pride- almost like those little Stumptown beans are my family and here they surprised me for breakfast and a couple cups of coffee. Thank-you, thank-you, THANK-YOU to the man (whom I spoke with) that decided to open this wonderful establishment, as well as going with Stumptown. If you're not familiar with Stumptown Coffee, check it out- It made its way into NYC a year or two ago...and expect to see more and more of it. (wifi would be nice...i know it makes people linger and you have what appears to be a "restaurant/cafe" side, and then a corner for single dwellers and book readers...can't quite figure out if you're going for it being a place to come and drink wonderful coffee, or if the welcome matt is short as you want to flip tables and make room for quick comings and goings...) p.s. maybe some coffee mugs instead of paper cups for when you want to sit and enjoy your breakfast sandwich and read for a bit? The fruit tart was simply...AMAZING. The outer layer was not very hard or soft, but just the right texture I like. The cream wasn't very sweet, and the fruits were delicious! Finally a fruit tart that doesn't taste like sour lemons in the disguise of raspberries and blueberries. A great spot for a caffeine fix, plus pastries, sandwiches, and the like. My husband loved his mocha while I thought my hazelnut latte - which my husband likened to a liquid Ferrero Rocher - was fantastic with itty-bitty pieces of hazelnut in every sip. We sampled the bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich, which was well-executed with crisp bacon, extra sharp white cheddar, and fluffy scrambled eggs. My only quibble is that it was served on the teensiest english muffin I've ever seen. Seriously, you could eat the whole thing in four petite bites. We also tried their almond croissant, which was divine. The service was efficient, if not friendly. The shop was bustling, but we managed to snag a two-top to enjoy our meal because tables turn quickly. As others have mentioned, there's no wifi and few power outlets, which I imagine are intentional choices to deter people from taking up residence all day. I'm really bummed. I went here today with a coworker and ordered a chai latte. I'm still amazed at how small their sizes are, but that aside- my iced chai latte (with soy milk) was easily the worst chai I've ever had. I'm not super picky, but I would prefer that my drink tastes like what I ordered rather than a mixture of water and soy milk... yuck. I did thoroughly enjoy the pasta salad though. Delicious! The quinoa salad looks really great too, I haven't tried it yet. Wonderful! Great atmosphere, full of friendly and helpful employees. I went in around 8 am and got a mocha ( real chocolate bits in the dregs, yummmm) it was dark and delicious and creamy and foamy and every other great word to describe the perfect mocha. This place is absolutely wonderful! I wish I could stay in Boston longer so I could come here every morning. I got a almond milk chai latte and a chia pudding. It was one of the best chai lattes I've had in a while so I was a happy camper. I was skeptical about the pudding but it was the only dairy-free item they had so I went for it. This is one of the first places I stopped by the first time I visited Boston and I loved how cozy and warm it is. I just love the ambience and the decorations during Christmas just make it so much better. The coffee is amazing! And the French hot chocolate is by far the best I tasted! During a recent trip to Boston, my boyfriend & I were at one of their three locations pretty much everyday. That's how much I adore them! On our first visit, he had the breakfast burrito. Like right now, as I'm typing this review. The B.A.L.T. was pretty amazing, but not better than the Jittery Hen. I really wanted to try their brown sugar lemonade, but they either didn't have it, or I forgot to ask the other days we were there. Thinking Cup reminds me of a Starbucks, but leaps & bounds BETTER! If I had to pick a comparison, it'd be to the Chicago Bulls in the 90's with & without Michael Jordan. On our last day, I stopped to take a picture of the storefront, and three people, THREE, stopped in their tracks, so they wouldn't ruin my shot. For the train ride home, we had a slice of their banana caramel cake, and a Jittery Hen. The cake was moist & soft. I am so happy that I found this place. Every time I visit a city, I try to find an indie cafe so I made it a point to come here. The lattes here are fantastic (beans from Stumptown) and yes, the latte art is beautiful. I ordered a small latte and it's a tad smaller than the usual 12oz (I think it's either 10 or 8 oz) but the espresso is strong and the milk was smooth so it was good enough for me. Service was a mix. The cashier was a bit to the point but maybe that's because it's so busy here. The baristas though, were really friendly even when juggling all the drinks. Considering how busy it was, the baristas were still able to make lattes without compromising the quality of the drinks or its presentation. I said it before and I'll say it again, it's busy here. Being across from Boston Common and next to a movie theatre, there's a ton of traffic. It had non-stop lines and the seats were always full. I wouldn't advise bringing a group larger then 3 (with 3 people, it's easy to nab an unoccupied seat from someone sitting solo) since it's hard to find a table to accommodate that size. I'm still definitely a fan, but I knocked down a star today, because recently, I've decided to branch out and try their baked goods (macaron and tiramisu).. and was disappointed. The macaron was okay, nothing amazing, definitely solid. However, the tiramisu (and I LOVE TIRAMISU) was disappointing.. I wanted more rum taste, more mousse, less cream and less cake. So, basically the ratio of cake and mousse was off... as well as the ratio of chocolate, coffee, and liquor. =/ However, the coffee is still fab, so definitely the place to go for your caffeine treats (although I'm starting to realize $4 is quite steep). read more

Not going to lie, the reason we decided on trying this place out was purely for their highly raved latte art and french macaroons. We came on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon thinking it would be "not so crowded." Boy were we wrong. After scouting for a seat and settling down, it was no wonder. The french macaroons were divine. We ordered an assorted dozen to try a little of everything. They were petite and sweet, but not overbearing or grainy in sugar. The creamy centers were cool and combined with the little cookies so well. My favorites were pistachio, salted caramel and hazelnut by far! I loved them so much that I had to order a little for myself on my walk out into Quincy. The hazelnut lattes were beautiful (my friend ordered it) and I ordered the matcha green tea latte with almond milk which was brewed and whisked to perfection! The space was intimate, with dim lighting and had an old world theme to it. The atmosphere was cozy and lovely on a rainy day. The barista was friendly and accommodating. Despite the busy nature of the shop she cashed us out and made sure she followed through with our order and went to grab/make our macaroons and lattes. I really appreciated that. Now-a-days most people simply pass over the order to someone else for better efficiency flow. Loved my visit here. Very much worth the mini trip. My new favorite coffee shop. I've been to both locations and I'm going to play favorites by picking this one. Only because I can sit by the windows here and look across to Boston Common. I like the hazelnut latte. They should make green tea lattes. Then I'll be here everyday! At least for this break. What makes this place so awesome for me is the atmosphere. When I knew I was coming to Boston I went on Yelp to look up the best coffee shop. I gotta have my coffee. Results showed Thinking Cup to be the best, so I bookmarked it. When I first walked in, the smell of good coffee and fresh baked pastries filled my nose... oh yeahhhh. There's lots of seating. I came on a Sunday morning and it was packed, but the line went fast. I ordered the Honey Cinnamon Latte... I don't usually like sweet drinks but I had just run 6 miles and was craving sugar. After I ordered, my drink was made quick. I can tell this place is used to being busy cause they are on top of their game and handled the line very well. My latte came in a ceramic cup on a saucer with a little spoon. I uploaded a pic. The quality is what I expected. Thinking Cup is a must stop for coffee lovers. For peeps who don't care about quality, there are Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks on just about every other corner. I've come here a few time but this time was an "ok" experience. The place was not super busy but the staff was not super friendly about taking my order. The place is pretty clean and they always have a good presentation of food! My favorite is the macarons and I highly suggest you try the lavender and/or salted caramel flavor! Another favorite aspect of this place I like is when they decorate the hot chocolate and have the heart shaped design on top. Other than that, the place is maintained well, has a great set up and the food is good. I just would like to see more happy workers! read more

These guys make one of the best lattes in Boston - creamy foam, well-balanced espresso flavor - strong but not bitter :) I've never tried lavender-flavored macaroons and the one I had here was just great, I'd definitelly recommend you to try it ( if having a purple-colored dessert is not enough of a selling point for you ). Let's talk about the bread pudding - it was to DIE FOR!!! Crispy on top, moist in the with some raspberries and cherries - mm mmmm mmm! Plenty of comfortable seating at the coffee shop - tall bar chairs by the front windows, regular chairs & coffee tables, and couches. It's usually busy.
