I really liked the small family business feel, but it felt different with the new owners. Not a fan of the sweet and sour soup because I didn't get any sense of "sour". The egg roll and the crab rangoon was a nice touch, probably the best part of my meal. Unfortunately the beef in my beef broccoli dish was chewier than I expected, and it took me awhile to finish. Not terrible, but also not very good. Newer to the Scottsdale area wanting to try out other cuisine besides the countless restaurants serving $20 burgers & fries. I should have realized that this wasn't Phoenix where's there's actually some diversity in the people & cuisine. But I thought I'd take a chance at a nearby place instead of driving 30 minutes to Liuyen (spoiler alert, it's worth driving to Phoenix for foreign cuisine). I asked the guy behind the counter if he was the owner & he said 'yeah something like that' and then went on about taking cash from the register & going to the casino or something... somewhat strange but I chuckled & gave him the benefit of the doubt. For our appetizer, we got spring rolls. As for the entrees, we went with 2 Chinese takeout classics: a cashew chicken & a General Tsos chicken lunch special. Apparently the lunch specials were supposed to come with an egg roll or a crabrangoon. I just realized now while writing this review now that we were given neither. The spring rolls we payed for were 3 pinky-finger sized frozen rolls for $6. Absolute insanity. I mentioned to the server that I liked spicy food, & he immediately wanted me to try his 'baby's-first-time-cooking' habanero sauce that he made seemingly himself. I said that I'd try it out of pity. He later started arguing with the cook in the back about it. At that point I just said I'd take it on the side. It probably would have been OK at best for a Mexican restaurant instead. The cashew chicken had about 5-6 pieces of cashew on top. The ratio of chicken to veggies was about 5% meat to 95% veggies. Good way to maximize profit, terrible way to keep repeat customers. Sauce tasted good though. The General Tsos was just their 'house made sweet & sour sauce' mixed in with chili oil. One of the pieces of chicken I bit into had a bone in it. Another great way to maximize profit & make a first & list time customer. As if it couldn't get even more disappointing. I want to say that at one point this place was better than it seems to be, looking like a hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant. The stock-photos of the food on the menu led me to believe that it was once owned by Asians (or someone else) that strived on quality & flavor. Would not recommend. read more

Since new ownership took over we don't order here anymore. Before we were charged reasonable prices ie dishes like orange chicken that was priced at 11.95 has now been marked up 40% to almost 18 dollars. With all that mentioned if the food was still at the same level or better I can see a little more justification for the price hike, but alas no, the food quality and portions have diminished which leads us to say farewell to a place we use to order from for over 10 years. Neighborhood spot, almost always pick up Togo. Family run, good food, plenty of seating, parking can be tight. Negotiating with the other businesses can make parking difficult. The food is always good. The negative would be the female (older woman), she's not always willing to listen. We joke about when we order visa phone: she speaks very fast, looking to get you off the line ASAP. Ordering in person is better, not great. With the new owners, and new name, it's just not the same. They changed the recipe for at least the General Tso's sauce. To-go orders are no longer tossed in their sauce. The employee said that it causes the breading to fall off. That was definitely not the case, and I was a regular customer for 5+ years here. Also, the crab puffs have shrunk in size and content. Still 8 to an order, but not the same. I do understand if things change, prices go up, maybe suppliers change. But honestly, new owners, don't change what people liked and what was working!! Just tried Wok Express for the first time and it did not disappoint! I had the pork fried rice, and it was absolutely delicious--packed with flavor and the vegetables tasted incredibly fresh. My wife ordered the chicken fried rice and couldn't stop raving about it--she said it was exquisite. Great portions, fast service, and everything tasted like it was made with care. Visited this establishment yesterday and it was delicious. Staff was wonderful. Met Robert and his wife Jane and they were exceptional. Friendly, attentive and assertive. Very welcoming. We had the Wor Wonton Soup which was full flavorful and full of shrimp, chicken and beef and fresh vegetables. The portion was huge. We also had the egg rolls and crab puffs which were crispy and delicious. The homemade hot mustard made it even better. A must!!! For dinner we had the Mongolian beef and Kung Pao chicken. Both were very flavorful and the portions were huge. So happy to have found this close to home. We will be back again soon:) read more

Very disappointing! The new owners may have cleaned up too much. After reconfirming our take out order, it was still wrong when picked up. One of the combo meals was entirely missing the "combo" pieces. The other meal was not at all as described in the menu, only containing the protein and a single vegetable variety. Most disappointing was that BOTH meals were COMPLETELY FLAVORLESS! Very sad, will not be returning. read more

The new owner is awful my family and I have been coming to The Wok Express for yearssss and they just recently got a new owner and he was horrible he was yelling at the lady at the front and being very condescending to her there was only one cook there and instead of jumping in to help them he just kept telling them that they were behind also the has food changed and it was so bad my orange chicken had black pieces on it and the chicken chow mein smelled and tasted like ramen noodle seasoning. I have been eating at the Wok Express for over 20 years. The original owners prepared their orange chicken using freshly breaded chicken breasts which was the best dish I had ever eaten. The second owners changed it to a frozen chicken nugget, but the rest of the menu stayed the same and Wok Express was my go-to Chinese restaurant ever since. I'm the guy who has his own seat at the restaurant; my drink would be delivered before I could sit down and they took the time to remember the dishes that I liked. I went there several times while the new owners were training, he was very enthusiastic but I was immediately told that he would be changing the menu very soon. I couldn't get a refill on my drink so I just walked up and filled my cup. After the training period, the menu changed, the quality changed, and the service changed. None for the better and the owners' attitude is not inviting. I just walked out today without ordering and I do not believe this restaurant will survive. Wok Express was a staple of our community for over two decades and I'm sorry to see it go. I gave them one start because I could not choose zero. read more

First time here. My brother and I were dying for chow fun, but they didn't have any of the wide rice noodles made. But that's ok. Lots of other options! My go-to Chinese take out place! Servings are very generous and you always get the food super fast. They don't skimp out on ingredients and the staff are super friendly. A woman right after me ordered two soups to go. Just doesn't make sense. I sure didn't t get a discount for the lack of an item that is advertised to be with a dinner combo. Dissatisfied with that. It used to be sort of like a Pei Wei sort of thing - order up front and get your food...my gripe then was that they used too good of meat and it just didn't taste right. (I know...'what the heck are you talking about, John?', but hey, orange chicken is supposed to be made with icky hunks of dark meat, you know?) They're now setup as a more traditional sit-down place. Ha, I'm sure that's an odd thing to say for a review of a Chinese takeout place! In general, their noodles are great and are probably my favorite things on the menu. We ordered the Singapore noodle and the beef rice noodle. We also ordered the bbq pork fried rice. Yum, the pork fried rice was sooo good. I'm such a sucker for good fried rice. The flavors are pretty close to authentic, the portions are generous, and you most certainly feel full and satisfied at the end. I'm going to very quickly write a review as I wait for my takeout. Located next to Dollar Tree in the Safeway shopping center. Now that it's under new ownership owned by a nice family, the quality of the food has definitely improved. I love coming here now to order their moo shu chicken, hot & sour soup, yu shan chicken, lettuce wrap. The interior has been brightened with new furniture and fresh paint & decorations. It is much nicer than before. The only thing which I am not sure how you would get rid of it is when you initially walk in, the place smells stale. Maybe cause I got here just as they opened and the place needs to get aired out. I love coming to family owned places especially one where the owner greets you with a warm smile.
