Now I know why this restaurant has to use door to door flyers to get customers. After receiving no less than 25 flyers on my door, I finally went in to see for myself. Wow! Let me just say this place is amazing! Has that old school Chinese food flavor and menu. I ordered sweet and sour chicken and pork fried rice for delivery. They had it to me very quickly, and even though I am on the edge of their delivery area, the food arrived hot and crispy! They don't put the sauce on the chicken so it didn't arrive soggy, which is a huge plus for me. The chicken was all white meat and great quality, breading was perfect and crispy even after delivery. Huge portions! The pork fried rice is one of the best I have ever had. I'm new in this area and after trying a few other places for Chinese I was disappointed with, I almost gave up. Mr Cooks continually puts menus all over my property almost on a weekly basis: jammed in my door, thrown on the front step, in the mailbox, and even stuffed in between cushions on my porch furniture. One of the menus jammed into the door melted, damaging the door paint and requiring a total repaint. Since I am a renter, I now have to carry the cost of the repairs. Mr. Cook's has been serving the Phoenix area with fantastic Chinese food for at least 20 yrs now, if not longer. Their quality is always unmatched- even by more expensive offerings. It's authentic and as close as you can get to East Coast style Chinese food here in the desert. The family that owns and operates this restaurant are awesome as well- very nice people, will explain anything you ask, and of course, can make the BEST Chinese food. Hmmm.. yeah. This one's going to be a tough review to write. I'll cut right to it. I ordered the Mongolian Beef w/fried rice. Both the kid and wife ordered the orange chicken w/white rice. My meal was great. Definitely one of the better dishes of this type that I've had - hot and freshly cooked without the excessive amount of onion that I've seen other places give in place of the beef itself. Wife had to spit out her first bite because, well, she said that it was a bone but later clarified that it was a chunk of cartilage, like the knuckle part you get on a drumstick. Kid didn't mind his. Cutting it down the middle, the meal was therefore just average. What really brings this place down is just how positively DINGY it is inside. Dirty around the corners, plastic cartons with softdrinks on the floor by the counter, not hard to imagine cockroaches at night or god knows what else. We didn't SEE any but sitting in a place like that was definitely cringe-worthy. It's also cramped as hell inside. Four booths, and one of them literally backs up to a waist-height drink fridge. There was a woman sitting at that bench, with her back actually against the door to the fridge, such that I had to ask her to lean to the side so that I could open the cabinet to get our cans of drink. There was of course no drink dispenser at all here. Making a seated diner move to get at an establishment's drinks is unacceptable. Lunch is until 3pm. We got there at 3:10pm and asked if lunch was still being done. Nope, it was on to the dinner menu. Can't fault them for following the posted rules to the letter. Could maybe fault them for not making an exception for customer satisfaction, especially given our visible disappointment. Minor credit lost here. The high point was my meal. The low points are what earns this place 2 stars. Would absolutely disrecommend dining in; the interior is just an eyesore not to mention ergonomically problematic and cramped as hell unless you head out to the meagre porch. Wiring, home-depot-style metal garage shelves in the dining area.. sorry, but visuals, cleanliness and order absolutely matter and we all left with the heebie jeebies. Just don't store your inventory where customers can trip over it or sneeze on it. Prices are average. The last thing I considered when leaving, funnily enough, was the plastic fork provided for the meal. It was the flimsiest thing I've ever used - not large enough to scoop more than a few grains of rice onto nor strong enough to pick up a piece of beef with the tines. It's a minor thing but it almost doubled the amount of time that I spent actually eating as I was doing three forkfuls per single bite. I can't use chopsticks worth a damn but I think I would have been able to actually eat faster with them. Can't justify returning, I'm afraid, even if the mongolian beef was on point. read more
