Super cheap! Very good food. It took about half an hour with other customers there and only one man working which is impressive. Opened in the 1980s. Guy fieri visited in 2008 and this place was featured on his show. Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. I feel like they should renovate the Restaurant. It appears Dirty and needs to be cleaned. Really tasty dogs! We did several different varieties with different sausages and they were all very good. In particular, they have really good caramelized onions. The staff were friendly and did a great job. This is definitely a dive but in the best way. Very low key lunch counter environment. The meats were all high quality. The buns were pillows of softness. Onions rings were good. I watched the host/chef/waiter slice the potato into fries. Get a two-potato order. What's an extra couple bucks for great fries? They tasted like my mom made them: crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and NICE and salty. The price? $9 for a dog, fries and a can of soda? I ate lunch today with my three elementary school age kids. First time in over a decade I had been back. Far better than I remembered! The hand cut fries were fantastic. The hot dogs, Polish sausage and smoked Bratwurst we ordered were all high quality sausage, grilled perfectly, with great toppings. The owner was quite a character, interacting kindly with my neurodivergent son. He was also interacting with respect and kindness to openly trans customers and Somali neighbors. So I went in here recently, and I definitely put the "Wiener" in "Wienery" so to speak, but then I put the Wiener in a lot of things, as you know. Super cute little tiny hot dog shop in the Hipster part of Minneapolis not far from downtown. I stopped in her, as well as a couple of other places in this neighbourhood and it's definitely one of the trendy but also older little districts of Minneapolis, where you'll find a lot of quirky little places and tiny gems. This is one of those gems. The Chicago dog was good, but not amazing, and the price was about average. Wait time was a few minutes, but that was fine with me since it's a tiny little local place and I was just happy that people were coming in here. But it's definitely a nice place and I'll definitely be back here to try some of the other dogs. The Chicago was a few steps below what I expect from the best Chicago dogs in town, but the Twin Cities have a high standard for Chicago food, and this was still one of the better ones in town. OVERALL: This is the definition of "hole in the wall". Delicious and quality food for a good price! Never would've expected it at all. ATMOSPHERE: What is a seemingly random location, you order at a walk up window. There's a cool mural on the side with some retro photos. FOOD: I ordered the Italian combo, it's a delicious Italian sausage with Italian beef on top. It's so filling and so good! We also ordered chili cheese fries and it is a hefty amount. Pro tip: you can make your chili spicy as well if you prefer. Everyone at the table loved what they got and it has such a wide variety you can't go wrong. Hmmmm, well I am not quite sure where to begin. My husband and I LOVE going to hole in the wall random places. This place is a Wizard of Oz-ie, don't look behind the curtain, they were kind enough to let us use their "restroom" but I regret it. I am pretty sure I heard mice squeaking, my daughter asked why/where the chirping animal was caged, I didn't have the heart to tell her what it really was. My husband was entertained by the terror on my face when we returned so he wanted to ride it out. The food was tasty and filling. Fresh cut potatoes and hot dogs with a snap! I was stoked on my Chicago style dog and would have been comfortably satisfied had my husband not told me that he saw the cook sniff the coleslaw and dish it up, guess that means it was good? The Wienery is not your hipster cousin's trendy, line out the door, must try while you're in town eatery. It's just a good place to get a sausage. But each time I've been there I left feeling I made the right choice for lunch. When they're not sold out I always try to get the bratwurst with sauerkraut and onions and they do justice to that and any other of your classic favorites. The place might seem rustic at first, but that's just part of the gritty atmosphere they present. The morning after a meal at the Wienery I'm always happy, healthy and ready to go on my next Yelp adventure. Some suggestions for the menu: - The Hairy Brain with a Brat (if you like cheese) - The Warsaw with a Brat (for those with a more savory pallet) - The Upsetter with beef polish (Ron Swanson style) - Ray Dog with any (I really like onions) Additionally their fries are on the tasty side and their chili sides are pretty good as well. Stopped by for a Manhattan Vienna Beef Polish and it was really good. Technically this was a "Detroit" or "Detroit Coney" or "Coney" if in Detroit. As some one from Manhattan, mustard ketchup and kraut are the toppings there. Anyways, the dog, chili, cheese and toppings were spot on Detroit style. No beans - thank god. The only thing I was torn on was the bun. The first bite was amazing. But then it was so soft, which is kind of nice at first, but also just squishes down to nothing as you get to the rest. Went back to the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood today. Just went to check out a couple of places I used to go in college. The Weinery used to be my spot for some breakfast or hotdogs. This little spot been serving up locals for a awhile. It a nice chill spot with an awesome old school feel. Today I got a Chicago style dog which is always good. The wife got a regular hot dog and we got a side of their famous drive in fries. It is basically chili cheese fries with topped with coleslaw. There are many other ways to to your fries as well. So if you're like us, you'll order $25 worth of food which is something like two burgers, a hot dog wrapped in a tasty pancake blanket with scrambled eggies (that's The Cadillac), and some chili cheese fries, and they'll tell you holy cow that's a big order and you'll be like please I got this, and you'll proceed to down the cheese fries on a park bench fifteen feet from the window from where, if you're lucky, you may catch some of the chill vibe of the staff while they top your wieners and get ready to send you on your jolly way. The guy who is working there the day we went in is incredible! We ordered a couple hotdogs, polis sausage, and a Philly cheese steak. I thought the Polish was the best out of everything. We also ordered chili cheese fries which I thought were awesome! They hand cut all of their fries quite literally and I saw that guy working there using the potato cutter to make the french fries. This isn't the cleanest of places you will ever go, but it has charm and character and it is super convenient to Midwest mountaineering and other stores and places in that area. The next time I go I'm going to try a brat because that's the one thing that I regret not trying before hand. They also have A and W root beer from the fountain and I love me some root beer. Wow. I've driven by many times on the weekend and it was always closed. Thankfully today I hit pay dirt. While breakfast is served all day, I went for the hot dog. Specifically I did the Maxwell Street Vienna Beef (If you've ever been to the Maxwell St. Market in Chicago, you'd understand). Hot peppers, sauteed onions and green peppers. Outstanding. I then added a little ketchup and a couple of squirts of Siracha and it was even better. The place is a cash only place but if it's two of you, a 15 bucks should have you covered. Here's my take on the place - the food is cheap and tastes cheap - the people are awesome and I would so go back there because our server was hilarious! The kind of hilarious that I would come back there for and order a basket of fries and that's it! The food did not digest well, but meh I guess I should have expected that once I walked in the door. Long story short, you could make the food at home easily and it would probably taste better, the server / staff are friendly and hilarious! The waiter was a guy you would want to party with? The menu looks promising, but ends up being a major letdown. If they were open later I would go there for after bar close munchies - the food is cheap because it is cheap! However, I personally would prefer a chain place like McDonald's after bar close because it's cheap, faster and hey - after Bar Close I could really care less what I eat anyways, plus I don't know if I would want to be in this area after midnight, let alone 2AM! I am surprised by all of the 4 and 5 star reviews based on mainly their food! Alright, so I had a large craving for some hot dogs and had decided that since this place was close to campus that I would stop by. First, the divey will is pretty awesome. I haven't been to a hole in the wall in quite some time. When we first came in we sat at the counter. My partner and I were greeted by the waitress and she had told us that our beverages were self serve and over by the end of the counter. We then took a look at the menu. They had a many different items to choose from but I specifically wanted hot dogs. My partner had a hamburger and I had a California dog and also Manhattan dog. I asked her to pile on the onions because I enjoy onions a lot. (Look at the picture) The overall price wasn't killer.. It was actually very affordable. It was really nice to actually pay a reasonable price for the amount of food that we had got. I can't remember what the price was but it was either $15 or less than $15. That was for two soda's a burger and two dogs. It was kind of cold near the window, but it is the dead of winter in Minnesota. I would like to come back and try more of their food. So my coworkers and I pick a place to go for lunch around the Twin Cities every month or so. Today our young friend picked The Wienery in the Cedar/Riverside neighborhood. Not the best area of the Twin Cities. The Wienery sits right next door to what many call The Projects and it is a five minute walk from the light rail station I lived about a mile from the area for 3 years and hardly ever travelled there, but with 6 healthy young males, it felt safe enough, but I wouldn't walk around there by myself at night. Anyway, the Wienery is a real hole in the wall with torn up seats and very different clientele. One guy walked in with tattoos all over his body, including one horizontally across his face. Before we left three people came in that smelled like they hadn't had a bath in a week. There are 12 stools along the counter and two tables. The guy cooking is the owner I think and seemed to know what he was doing and the waitress was his wife I believe. I know they are famous for their hot dogs, which everyone in my party loved, especially the spicy hot dog and the fries looked awesome too. Cut fresh by the potato. I went for the Philly Cheese Steak, I have to say it was fantastic, lots of meat and vegetables with just the right amount of cheese on a white hoagie roll. It was awesome. We left the establishment not believing what we saw, but everyone was satisfied with their meal. Plus unlimited soda for a buck and a quarter. We all got out of The Wienery for about 6 bucks. I don't think I would bring my wife there, but it is an experience I will remember for a long time. read more
