Okay so this is an old review from a few years ago, but important nonetheless. The food, great, you get solid chicken of whatever style that doesn't miss. The service, okay, definitely not top of the line but it's a soul food experience so the food is the emphasis. The ambiance, definitely a grab and go, not super cozy, but you can eat there if you desire. I got my wings and went home though. The sauces, delicious, spicy, zesty. Now for the prices. They've been increasing since 2020, nothing unusual just makes it harder to frequent and probably limits their audience from doing the same. Hook Fish & Chips is definitely more of a hole-in-the-wall, order-and-go takeout kind of place--but in the best way. In my opinion, they have some of the best battered fish fry and chips around. The seasoning on the fish really makes it stand out, and it absolutely pops when you dip it in their hot sauce. That combination is hard to beat. They also have some of the best chicken wings--seasoned with that same flavorful blend--which makes them just as memorable as the fish. This isn't a sit-down, linger-awhile kind of spot--it's more about grabbing something hot, fresh, and satisfying to take with you. Highly disappointed with my experience here. I went with a few friends looking for a cheap and easy bite to eat. Firstly, it was not as cheap as was advertised on Google. The sandwiches were all around $10, which isn't bad, but all of the dinner plate options were all $16. Fries and a drink is an extra $4. These prices aren't horrible, but the food was not worth it. None of my friends were happy with our meals, and the four of us all got something different. I had the fish sandwich with fries and the fish was so thin it was mainly breading + the actual bread. It was very dry. The fries were decent, nothing special but I can't complain. Other than the food, the building itself was weird. The seating options were all booths, but the tables were so small that you could not sit on both sides without your legs touching the person opposite from you. It was very cramped and uncomfortable. At least the service was good, the guy at the counter was very kind. Definitely not going back though. read more

This place is the best! The food is spectacular and their fire and ice lemonade slushies are to die for I had told myself that I will be coming back here every week to try something new and to always buy the lemonade the scenery is kinda old school as they have some tables and chairs for you to eat in they even have a vending machine but that doesn't have much in it. The food is very filling and the service is exceptionally well I would highly recommend this location you will not be disappointed especially for all the stoners out there this food will make your mouth water great service. read more

I was here a little bit ago, and even though it was my first time here, I have to say that I was impressed with this place. Not only with the friendly service, but the fried food as well. I mean at first it was hard deciding on what to order, but I chose the fried catfish, which I never had , but I made the right choice. Because the fried catfish really was worth the price. Not only did it fill me up, but it was tasty to boot as well. I really want to go back since there is usually so many different items to choose from, and the staff gives great customer service. They seem to have a smile on their face, even if we might take a few extra minutes to order our food. read more

I had the chicken wings and fries the other day. The fries are really good. Seasoned, and go well with ranch or hot sauce. The wings were a little salty for my tastes, but they were fresh fried and the difference was pretty significant to something that had been pre-fried and sitting (aka KFC, Popeyes). My sister has been here several times and mentioned that the Cheese Steak is different from before, not as good as it use to be. She also told me that it seemed like it was under new ownership. The decor is drab. Inside eating tables are sparse. Strange selection of pop. Pina Colada, Coconut, etc. Lots of ratchet people will be here at certain hours of the day/evening. Brace yourself for a culture shock if you're not from the cities. No one will bother you except for the occasional drunk loitering outside. read more

I was wanting to visit a different chicken place. The online hours did not match what is posted on their door. Closed Mondays. Very dissappointing. I drove around not being sure of where I wanted to go, if anywhere. Just home might have been good enough for me today. I got to University Av and decided to drive down on it. Been years since I have been on University. Sometime between when the rail was being built and the field. Lots have changed. Many boarded up buildings because of the difficult times we are in now. Hope things can get back to normal soon. Spotted this Hook Fish n Chicken. I have been to a Hook Fish and Chicken on Rice a few years ago. I was not dissappointed, but never went back either. I park and go in to look over the menu. Undecided what I want now, though 30 minutes earlier it was chicken. I decided on the Philly Steak combo. Placed my order, paid $11.31 and it was prepared in about 10 minutes. Decent service. No dining in at this place right now. I decided to eat it in my car. The drive home is about 12 minutes. I didn't want the meal to get mushy because of the drive. Good choice too. Opened the tray up and saw this very good looking Philly. Peppers/Onions are standard and they even have red peppers. Picked up the sandwich, very nice. Light roll, warm and toasty. Had a few bites and was very pleased. Meat to bread ratio was on the mark. Fries were very crispy though a bit more seasoned than I would prefer. unless the seasoning was something other than salt. This was a very decent lunch. Sandwich was an adequate size for me. An 8 inch sandwich. Roll was very good, fresh, light and toasty. Service was fair. Not overly friendly but not acting like they don't care either. Certainly worthy of a visit again. read more

I used to eat here a lot years ago and recently moved back to Minnesota and had to stop in to see if the food was still good. It was not to many people in the restaurant but at 6:30pm on a Sunday what would you expect. The service was decent and we really have no complaints. We ordered catfish fillets, chicken wings, fries and the foot long Philly Cheesesteak. The cheesesteak was really delicious. It had a lot of flavor and the bun they used was soft and good. The fries were really good and I'm not a big fan of fries anymore but I ate 75% of the fries they gave us and we still had a good amount left. The chicken wings were decent, I would definitely ask for extra seasoning depending on your taste. Same goes for the catfish, it was fried to perfection but we would have preferred extra seasoning. Whatever they season the fish, chicken and fries with is magic and really good. Last but not least the Pineapple and Cherry Lemonade...flame! There was really no disappointments here, service was fast compared to past times I visited years ago. Hooks will be a good to whenever we come to Saint Paul from Eagan. read more

Extremely rude customer service. The food is decent but ruin my appetite the moment I got my food. He yelled for my number and there were four people before me. I waited patiently and the moment I told him my number he then lectured me for not yelling my number. Bitch, I have class. I don't need to be yelling for my number. It's not a fish market. A group of coworkers and I were trying to figure out what to do for lunch and this place was thrown out as an idea. Only one person had ever been here so we decided we would give it a try. The place seems a little sketchy with the bars on the windows and doors, but don't let that detour you. The food was good and the portions were large. The group managed to cover a variety of items from the menu, but the most enjoyed was probably the cheese steak. Lots of meat, peppers, onions, and messy, cant go wrong. The fries were also great, seasoned and extra crispy. Great place for lunch with a good variety of menu items to choose from. Will definitely add it to the lunch roster. read more

I like that they have lots of drinks to choose from. I got the 3 wing special and they let me sub fried okra for ff, for an extra .75. Friendly service. Food looks good and what I had was good. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Straight forward and consistent product. I always get the wings or philly cheese steak with fries and cheese sauce. I've never been dissatisfied with the food at Hook - which actually appears to be two different franchises: 'Hook Fish and Chicken' and 'Fire and Ice'. But, correct me if I'm wrong on that point. Portions are very generous, the meats are fresh and expertly fried and the french fries are some of the best ever - if you like the crispy-breaded style of fries, which I happen to. The pieces of fish & chicken do not appear to come breaded & frozen, they bread fresh cuts by hand just before they go into the oil. They also seem to have a very large number of fryers, and segregate the various foods between them - so I've never had a 'fishy' tasting french fry, if you know what I mean. Lastly, don't miss the lemonade.. best as I can tell, it's genuine fresh lemons and white sugar, but FROZEN like a Slushy! Really delightful and cold on a hot day, and again, a nice big cupful. For some reason, they garnish it with an orange slice and cherry stuck on the straw.. why not, I guess? Only downside is the sparse & spartan dining area, and lack of ketchup pumps, so you might want to call ahead for take out. Calling ahead is a good idea in any case, as they can be a little slow - mainly, because everything is cooked to order and not sitting around under a heat lamp. read more

I got myself frys they were good but got cold to fast and lost its taste it tasted like it was freezer burned. My brother got a chicken sandwich and found a hair in it the hot sauce wasn't hot, the chicken looked like it was from Gordon Ramsay's Hell Kitchen and the way it looked was gross and dirty. read more

The food is good when you're craving deep fried fish, chicken or French fries. The seasoning and batter is the same for everthing. The chicken strips were cooked well, the gizzards were way overcooked, the catfish is a bit gamey, the perch was decent, and the slaw is ok. Don't expect anything more. The place is in a tough location, it's counter serve dining room is filthy and you get the cheapest possible condiments with food in Styrofoam. I got the gizzards and wings. They were pretty decent. I went in the middle of the day around 12:30 pm and there was no security. I was ok with this, as it wasn't that scary. When I went there, the gizzards were tougher than I'm used to and the meat all tasted like stale oil. The fries were ok. I wound up paying about $12 including a soda, which I thought was a bit overpriced for the quality of food I wound up with. The store was extremely hot, I don't believe they have AC, and they had the doors wide open although, I didn't see any flies buzzing around. I will try them again and hope for a better experience, but not hopeful. read more

I have been going here on and off for years. Overtime the portions have gotten smaller, especially the chicken wings and they charge for every single condiment. Staff is never really friendly, but very anal.... So if your willing to trade a smile and greeting for a timely and correct order , then this is your place.
