Tooties remains a neighborhood gem that continues to surprise me. We started our meal with the Bacon & Cheddar Tater Tots. I have never before described a tater tot as phenomenal. Well, that's exactly what these are. The sauce that comes with them is a perfect match that his a nice kick of heat. The remainder of our meal was: a Patty Melt and a Gourmet Burger. These, too, were best-ever meals. The fries were perfect and I'm now drooling thinking about them. These burgers were cooked perfectly and were delicious in every way. All of the condiments/toppings that came with them were not extraneous at all. Every bite was a head-shaking experience of fantabulous burgerdom. The service here is quick and attentive without being overwrought. We were given the space to devour our food, while not wanting for anything. Driven past this place a few times, finally went in and gave it a try. Was pretty good but the burger I got was underwhelming. The sauce (Thai peanut bacon burger) was good but the burger wasn't it. Was a little light on the fries which was already 3$ to upgrade. My GF got the fish special which she said was pretty good but heavily breaded and underwhelming. Got the meal for takeout. I'm partial to the Black and Bleu and the Blackjack burgers but honestly both could be more spicy to my taste. Pretty solid wings in a variety of flavors and some really good sandwiches, including a nice Reuben, as well. When I'm craving bar food, this is it! Small parking lot, and street parking available. Seat yourself. They have a few happy hour specials in the bar area around 3-5pm. There's a dining section, and a pool table & dart board back by the bathrooms. The ambiance is a classic warm wood-paneled dive bar. Typically one rockstar server holding down the whole place, and what I assume is one cook in the back. I liked this place so much I went twice in one week! Once for some burgers, once for some wings, and both times for some beerz. They also have a few cocktail specials they make in batches like mules & margaritas. I love this place. Not fussy. Super friendly. Owners are great community-oriented people, authentic and genuine, hard workers. Family-owned and run, they accepted me as a regular after my second time in the door. The place has been around FOREVER and is really a staple in this neighborhood. Nick makes great meatloaf on Tuesdays and fish fries on Fridays. Krissy's hand-crafted cocktails are phenomenal every time. Wish she'd give me her butter beer recipe from Halloween. I had been wanting to go here for quite a bit! I finally made it with a friend who lives in the area. She has said many good things about the wings & burgers. I decided I had to try the wings. I did 10 wings 1/2 Buffalo and 1/2 5-Spice. My sister was along also and grabbed the Chili Plum! I enjoyed all the flavors. The wings were good in size, juicy, and had a decent crispy. I love this place! I grew up a few blocks from this place & would visit often. Moved away & now I'm back! In my opinion they have some of best chicken wings! I especially like their 5 spice dry seasoning wings, I actually highly recommend them! I will be honest and tell you the wings are pretty small. It's about a $1/wing I feel like is normal for dining at most places these days. They make their ranch & blue cheese in house so it's an extra charge. I normally call ahead and order my food to-go. It's a pretty standard neighborhood pub/restaurant setting. They have a small parking lot but there's street parking. Parking is never really an issue. This is my 2nd time visiting Tooties, initially because a co-worker and fellow Yelper suggested I try. (See, I'm a wing connoisseur) I was craving wings and was in the neighborhood and decided to order the 5 spice and the Thai peanut sauce. It was my first time with Thai wings and they DID NOT disappoint. I'm not a big peanut butter fan, but these were really really good. 5 spice were good too, but the the Thai Peanut Sauce wings are my new fav's. Service: Placed my order via phone for pick up. I'm happy I found this local gem. The staff are so friendly and seem to be having a great time working. We tried the chicken wings and they were crispy, hot, and fresh. I love that the wings don't come breaded and that they have so many sauces. We went with the five spice (super crispy), Thai peanut (hands down the favorite), and jerk (close third). They allow you to split up your wing sauce into batches of 5, so you can get a nice sampling of wings. We also ordered a side of their veggies and dip that was a perfect pairing. However, everything is so dated that it gives off the dingey appearance of a dive. It needs a renovation badly. SERVICE: Our server was friendly and attentive. No problems here. FOOD: Disappointing. I ordered the stuffed burger which is filled with cream cheese and jalapeños. While that sounds great, it didn't come out favorably. The beef was cooked well despite asking for medium. It also had zero seasoning whatsoever. The bun was flavorless and soggy. I sprang the additional $2.85 for "seasoned fries" that ultimately had no seasoning on them. Everything was so bland. VALUE: Below par. It's bad enough when an American restaurant doesn't include fries as the default burger side and charges almost $3 extra, but insult gets added to injury when none of the food has basic seasonings. read more

A group of us Nordeasters crossed The River to check out Tootie's, after reading the glowing reviews from my Yelpster Freunde. All in all, we enjoyed our burgers at Tootie's. It's a dive, that's for sure. I like dives when they have a lot of character...but Tootie's doesn't offer much in that regard. The bathroom was dirty and a bit disgusting. But Tootie's comes close to making up for it with great service and some unique burgers. Two of our hombres got the Stuffed Burger: "it tastes like a jalapeno popper, only more burger-y." They dug it. The seasoned fries were really solid, but you do have to pay $2.45 extra to get them. I understand the burgers are cheap ($6-$7), but it felt a bit insincere, since you had to pay up for fries (the burgers normally come w/ a bag of chips). Since my first visit last year, I have been eagerly waiting for lent so I can get in on the Friday Fish Special. The location was almost empty at 4:00 except for one family finishing up their meal. The waitress was at our table right away and attentive through the entire visit. They didn't have any specials on drinks at the time but I got a Goose Island on tap for $4.00 so I wasn't hurting when I saw the price. The important thing to stress about Tootie's is it is no frills and no one is trying to impress you with anything but the food and the service. That being said, the food is remarkably fresh and you can taste the time and care that is being put into the dishes. I started off with a cup of beef stew that had perfectly tender and seasoned roast and the vegetables weren't stewed into a pulp. The fish is what I came for and what will bring me back again and again. The plate comes out and there are two massive pieces of fish hanging over the sides of the plate. The crunchy state fair-esque beer batter has a significant beer flavor that doesn't overpower the delicate white fish. The price for the portion is generous. Tootie's is what the Midwest does best. Fresh ingredients in classic and familiar recipes, a nice selection of beers, and an unpretentious atmosphere. I won't wait a year to go back this time. read more

I called in my order and the young woman on the phone was so friendly and she took her time with me. As I could hear the phone ringing in the background. Tonight I ordered Buffalo Wings, Chili Plum wings and Garlic Parmesan Fries. The wings were so Delicious! I loved the sweetness of the Chili Plum with a little spice. The Buffalo sauce was also very good. They make their own sauces. They also make the dressing that comes with your wings. The blue cheese had chunks of real blue cheese and had a smooth flavor. Today I ate a wonderful meal of Meatloaf. Now, I know what you are saying, "how could meatloaf be a wonderful meal?" Let's start with the "Where." Tootie's is a North Minneapolis institution. It has been there for years and years. It was one of the reasons that I bought my house where I did. It is family run and they are all there pitching in. The bar has character. Not quite the same as Nye's but it has its own distinct character. Tootie's is well known for their burgers. They have wonderful tasty burgers that I would be remiss if I didn't mention. Tootie's has one of the top ten burgers in the Twin Cities. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, let's get back to the story... On Tuesday, Tootie's has a Meatloaf dinner special, Thursday is a wonderful Turkey dinner and Friday is a tasty Fish dinner. The meatloaf is what I am going to write about. When you first enter Tootie's you will do so through the bar. Keep going and you will enter the seating area of the restaurant. I have always been served promptly. I avoid the water as it has a unique "Minneapolis" taste that I do not enjoy. There is the perfect amount of seating. You are far enough away from the next table so you don't have to listen to them, but close enough to ask for more salt if you need it. There are tables for two and there are tables for ten. There is a game room, but I have never seen anyone playing any of the games. As for the restrooms, I live close enough so I try to avoid them. The main reason I am writing this is to write about the food. I like comfort food. The food that you know and trust and brings you back to that place in life that you love and trust. One of my favorite comfort foods is Meatloaf. My dad makes a very good meatloaf that he has no recipe for. He makes it from memory and he never makes it the same way twice. It is wonderful. I like meatloaf. It reminds me of home and that comfort that only my parents can bring. The meatloaf meal at Tootie's starts with coleslaw. My grandma made coleslaw from scratch. It is what I judge all coleslaw against. She used food fresh from the garden that she grew. Tootie's has a fine coleslaw. It is a good start to the meal. When the meal comes it will come in one of two ways, one big piece or two pieces. It just depends on who is in the kitchen that day. You also get a great big dollop of mashed potatoes and gravy. Now I haven't figured this next part out yet, you get toast with this meal. Sometimes I get two pieces, sometimes three or four. There is just never any consistence with the toast. OK, the meatloaf, it is always moist and tasty. I have never had a dry piece here. The meat is juicy but never greasy. The gravy is yummy and never lumpy. The mashed potatoes are smooth but sometimes a little lumpy, which I like. I think there is a time and place for instant potatoes. This isn't one of them. They serve real potatoes here. You will get your beverage refilled constantly throughout the meal. Tootie's has a wide selection of beer and other beverages, but I usually only have a Coke. Tootie's also has a well-lit parking lot. They also have a camera pointed out there so I always park where the camera is pointed. You know you're getting yourself into a dive when you look at Tootie's from the outside and the area you're going to. There are no frills and nothing fancy, hell, the time I went, there wasn't even a working AC - didn't stop me. Sat down, the service was quick, got more than a few glasses of water considering the dead AC situation and even had them drop off a pitcher of water, just in case. Some of the best cheese curds arrived at my request, and served with ranch. Uh huh, good ole fashion ranch dressing. I love the fancy ketchups mixed with pixy dust and fruit items, but, nothing beats getting damn fine cheese curds with some buttermilk ranch. Great salt in the the cheese, light batter, and amazing chew to the little buggers. And at under $7 an order, they don't cost some absurd amount for what it is, deep fried cheese. With an empty basket, my burger shows up. This isn't a gourmet, fancy pants, "look at how cute I am" kind of burger. It's a sloppy, beautiful mess of meat, cheese and buns (haha, I said buns) that is what you dream of when burger crosses your mind on a Wednesday at the office. This happens to be a burger paying homage to my brothers north of the border, the Canadian Bacon Burger. A slab of beef covered in Canadian bacon with swiss and a honey mustard slathered all over it. After a few brief moments, it's a crime scene with mustard here, a few crumbs there and me wishing I could replicate the murder again. And I do. But, a week later and with that previous burgers cousin, the Black and Bleu Burger. Don't ask how they're cousins, but, it was the last thing my the burger said before I ate it . I've been to Tooties quite a few times, and it's always the same. Great curds, great burgers, shady area and a welcome burger dive bar in the world of high end burger joints. App plus two burgers and you're out of there with a tab under $25. read more

This place has some charm. I felt like I was in some townie bar/restaurant. The employees were genuine and nice. The food was straight forward and not flashy, it was tasty and cheap, which is what I was going for. I ended up trying out a burger a fries and was happy with what I got. The restaurant is decked out in wood paneling with nice, roomy booths. I was treated with some tinsel Christmas garland and other kitschy festivities. This is a place that I would be more prone to bringing my folks to because it reminds me of the watering hole they get their Friday Fish Fry at down in Rochester. Yes, this place fits in great with a family restaurant from SE Minnesota, which maybe should be an indicator that this is not your next hipster hang out. Bummer. We were there on Saturday and had thee worst service. The dining room was empty, and it still took 45 min to get burgers...The the fries came 15 minutes later after we had eaten the burgers. When we asked what had happened, since there was no apology or explanation given, she said "I don't know, he must not have seen the slip." Let me remind you, we were almost the only people in there. It doesn't matter if the burgers were good or not, the service stinks. Won't be back. Tootie should hold a basic customer service class for the employees. I come here often enough to have seen the good and the bad. The decor is definitely not something I come to the restaurant for however I do appreciate a play area for the kids. As far as the food goes it's what I would expect from a local nothing of note place. It's not bad though I wouldn't recommend it as a hotspot for anyone in particular. So as far as food goes I will say some of the items are overpriced while others are what you expect or more given the quality of food. I will say that I have had the Cajun blue cheese burger mentioned in an earlier review and I have to agree with her statements. I will say the chicken wings are a disappointment for how much they are vs size of the wing. I will say that the service really depends on who you get here. There is one girl in particular that I definitely do not like, she's rude and a down right unpleasant person. I also think she should keep her opinion out of the workplace when it comes to her customers because we can hear everything she says no matter where she is in the restaurant. Regardless of who she is talking about it is unprofessional to complain where your customers can hear you. The owner is a wonderful person and a good portion of the staff are wonderful as well. it is a local joint and has that type of feel to it so unless you plan on making it your local spot my suggestion would be to check it out if you're in the area but don't go out of your way. read more

Beware fellow Yelpers! I believe this "local dive" is buying their reviews with free food or drinks, because there is no way it deserves the rating it has received. I constantly search for local dives while traveling the U.S., and am not typically disappointed by the support of my fellow Yelp fans. In this case, sadly, I was. At best the food is adequate. I had their roast beef that was touted as a Philly. It was basically an Au juice roast beef sandwich with some bell pepper and cheese. But what REALLY drives the star rating down is the overall "tired" appearance of the place - dust, general disarray, clutter, and as was mentioned in a previous review - THE BATHROOMS! With the right technique, there's a lot you can do with normal ingredients. Tooties burgers seem like average quality ingredients, prepared perfectly. The patty was "just right" where you get the full seared flavor without drying out the meat. The bun was perfectly grilled or toasted. I had a burger with Canadian bacon and swiss, and both topping were plentiful. I didn't order any, but the table next to us got an order of wings, which immediately got my attention. The wings looked knobley and crispy. I turned to our waiter and said "You fry those long enough the make the skin crispy, don't you." He gave me a little smirk and said "Yeah, we know how to cook our wings." I'm going to have to try some next time. As for the decor... well, don't dress up. The Twin Cities best burgers - so says the Twin Cities' Reader. For those who have been around for awhile, we all know the Reader is long gone...but those words live on and ring true. Awesome burgers, my favorite is the Canadian Bacon Burger, but the list is extensive and not a bad one among the bunch. I am totally glad they have Surly on-tap. My favorite brew to go with the burgers. There is a small game room with pinball and pool that helps make an evening of fun for you and your friends.
