Calling a hotel exclusionary, when it's affectionately known as a "pub" ie a "public house", seems harsh, hence why I have gone into such detail about why my opinion has changed so markedly.
The Adelaide hills is such a lovely place, full of great businesses that work so well for locals and tourists alike; Unfortunately, my latest experience at the Uraidla has left me thinking it won't be on my list of places to take visitors to the region in the near future.
I had seen a bunch of photos of the latest developments on the 'Book and was excited to see how one of the new gems of the hills was developing.
However, what I found was exclusionary, deficit of any inviting warmth for that which this hotel had grown in reputation lately.
I would consider that I'm a fairly easy to please patron; I will always happily abide by any 'rules' or restrictions that a venue has, be it a no food zone or a dining area that is clearly marked and well known as a 'dining only' area.
We bought $80 of food and drinks and parked our butts in what we assumed was a communal area next to a fireplace where other people were sitting. Didn't think anything of it, it was 4pm and the hotel was quiet (except for the front bar which I will get back to). Within a minute or so we were informed that we couldn't sit in that area because the tables were being reset for dinner service.
By the time we left the hotel, that space had been empty for 3 hours. No passers-by, no people through to warm the tushee by the fire. Noone. Such a waste of a great space.
Sure, i will always respect a setup for service time, as there are many moving parts to a hospitality venue. I was a restaurant manager for years and know exactly the pain of working with patrons while you foresee other things that are going to occur later that day. I wasn't so peaved about being asked to move on. I was frustrated because we were told we had to move to the front bar; where the only low seating options were 2 couch areas, both taken. Or we could sit at high chairs. Not an option with kids. So we ended up moving upstairs.
When we went to get drinks downstairs we had to go to the front bar. No dramas, i love a good front bar. But when the whole bar is full, it's probably a little daunting for those people who aren't comfortable crashing through a crowd of people to order drinks or look at a wine list?!
We had a lovely time upstairs...for about an hour and a half. Then, without warning we were asked to vacate the space upstairs because they had a private function booked upstairs. No 20 minute warning. Or a sign. Or a whiff of anything of the sort going on such as a private show. Just an announcement that we had to move out pronto.
By the time we walked out, we'd collectively spent $200 for afternoon drinks and nibbles, and had been pushed out wherever we settled down.
Not a welcome, warm, friendly hills experience. Exclusionary is the word that comes to mind and what I will think of next time friends or family come from overseas.
Such a shame because we've eaten here before and I've enjoyed it every time I've visited. I was looking for am easy going late afternoon drink with friends. What I got was a frustrating and ultimately disappointing experience. Sure the place place looks great and I'm glad the uraidlans have somewhere to drink now but bugger me if I'll be back anytime soon or tell people to visit either. Hope it improves soon. read more
