Beer Garden

A part of me wasn't all that sure what to expect when we ended up in this part of the Adelaide Hills. Okay, it is basically the main road out of Adelaide, heading towards Melbourne, and has also been generally considered to be a rather well-healed part of the city as well. Anyway, as it turned out, this place is, well, basically a gastropub, and honestly, I'm not really a big fan of these type of places. In fact, the thing that put me off the most was that they didn't have beef schnitzel on the menu - it was almost as if I was back in Melbourne, with their overpriced, and rather unappetizing, menu options. Yeah, it may look nice, but I'll give it a miss for now.

Review update. Since my first review a few years ago the Crafers has really become a completely different pub. The food is better, the beers are better and the atmosphere is great. The owners Ed and Julie Peter have really spent the time and money getting everything right. As we used to live just up the road, we would walk down with the dogs and grab a schnitzel and a beer or stop in on the way to the city. Now it's hard to get a seat as every man woman and child has heard how much it's banging these days. I'd say it's nearly on par with the Stirling but the food isn't quite at that level, but the Crafers has a bit of room constraints with Jimmies next door and the freeway on their back porch. It's a shame because this pub could use a good beer garden.. I'm really hanging out for the renovation of the Uraidla by the Peters.

The Crafers Inn has for a very long time been known as the pub for locals knock offs and truckers. I was always disappointed that it did not offer anything more special than an schnitty and chips. But wait... in come the owners of the Stirling Hotel and Belair Hotel. With a very quick turn around and some smart refurbishment. The Crafers Inn has been revived into a very funky lil pub in the Adelaide hills. As soon as they started to chip away at the old 1970's plaster (which was the style back in the day) to expose the beautiful stonework and natural charm of the architecture, the customers started to flood in with curiosity. Then came the new menu and then came (my favourite) speciality craft beers and funky tunes. I immediately felt relief that someone put some attention is such an historic building with so much potential. This pub is now pumping, and I have noticed is attracting some attention of the non-hills dwellers. Which is great for Crafers and Adelaide Hills Tourism. Now, as for the menu. An extensive new menu that features pub classics with modern touches. I have tried the Pulled Pork with fancy slaw burger, served with chips. This is really amazing, well seasoned and balanced in flavour without being too heavy. Nice touch of sweetness to the chosen roll, and really goes down well with a pint of Pale Ale. Second meal I have tried was the Jamaican Goat Curry. I love curry, but I am also very fussy as to the quality of curries as well. But, this meal (like the burger) satisfied me. The curry was cooked well, with the goat very tender and the classic Jamaican Curry spices well done. Served with a pappadum and roti. Very nice! In fact, next time I go there I am ordering the curry again. As for the bar. When you have a bar that has a Feral Pale Ale and London Pride on tap, you have won me over. The behind bar beer choices are also extensive. So, if you are one of those growing beer connoisseurs and you develop a thirst on your way through the hills, Crafers Inn is a good place to stop for a top up. And now for a little history. For those unknown to the History of the Adelaide Hills, Crafers was once known as Waverly Ridge. How did it's name change? Well, apparently the folks in the hills where quite partial to taste of beer and would travel to Waverly Ridge to go to the local pub called Sawyer's Arms owned by a gentleman named David Crafers. Just like today, the locals would make plans for the weeks end to go to the Pub commonly phrased as "Crafer's place". So, apparently the name stuck to the area and Crafers is named after its pub history. For me it is quite satisfying to me to see that the Crafer's Inn is once again lively and full of people enjoying the Adelaide Hills and winding down after a hard weeks work.

Crafers historical hotel, circa 1880. Now renovated, modernised and restored. The Hotel has been thoughtfully decorated, retaining the best features of natural stone and brick walls, oak flooring, ceiling beams and roses, with three large open fireplaces, two with Victorian style surrounds complete with original mantles. Makes for an inviting, cosy, comfortable venue for Lunch, Dinner, or a comfortable Beer, Coffee stop, while in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. We enjoyed a large bowl of fries, and very well made smooth boutique coffee, while sitting beside an open fire. It was lunch time, raining outside, understandably the Hotel was crowded. We found the staff friendly, helpful, and well organised. Must return for dinner as the menu has some very appealing dishes available."

So pleased that the Crafe is now a venue worthy of out-of-towners, romantic quiet dates and large family gatherings all in the one venue. Was a time, way back when, where the Crafe was honestly a little....basic. But the time has come, and a rebirth accompanied by a tres fancy wine room, funky front bar. great service, good food and the same hills charm as it has always had. It's so close to the Mt Lofty Summit and many other great hills attractions, it makes a lot of sense to swing by and see what all the latest fuss is about.

Love the lights here!

Finally, I had located a pub in the Adelaide Hills that actually had schnitzel on the menu. Well,…read moreI've actually been to this place a few times, but that is probably not all that surprising since I did grow up in Adelaide, and have also known a number of people that lived in the area. It is actually quite a nice pub, with some rather friendly staff, that is also located in a really nice part of the area. Oh, they also had some decent beers on tap as well.

I got back in the car and went for a little drive down the road. Before I knew it, this pub loomed out of the greenery of the hills, and I suspected that I had found what I was looking for. Upon entering, I discovered that I had attended on Schnitzel Night. There were three choices on the specials menu television. None of them particularly met my desire, although I did want a schnitzel. I suppose I could have ordered any one of them, and requested all the topping to be removed and substituted for a mushroom sauce, but no, it didn't occur to me, so I just ordered the standard schnitzel off the normal menu. And it was absolutely delicious. The crumb was excellent, the quality of the chicken was probably one of the best I've seen in a pub in South Australia, and the mushroom sauce was beautiful. The staff were friendly, and the meals came out very quickly. I think I'll go back very soon.
