I loved the entire experience of going to eat at the Tree Room. We came early to visit the boutique store, walk through the newly built lodge, it's beautiful! The staff were incredibly friendly, and our waitress Tanya was the sweetest. We started with the following appetizers; Tuna tartare- the texture combinations of the crispy potato paired so well with the soft delicate tuna. Loved the added saltiness from the ponzu and capers. Wagyu cheek - with butternut squash risotto. Amazing! Melt in your mouth wagyu, so good! Scallop- with mushroom, smoked trout roa and lobster consume, another spectacular dish, loved all the components and the flavor profile. Beets - delicious with the feta and grapefruit. The bread service is perfection, light and hot, not a heavy bread at all. You get a piece of sourdough and a little roll with pepitas and golden raisins, so good. Our mains were the Pepper steak, which was cooked perfectly, and loved the chutney next to the pepper flavor King salmon with Thai curry mousse was amazing, I loved the crispy skin. We finished with the chocolate hazelnut mousse and the cheesecake. Both are light, not too sweet, the perfect ending to an amazing meal. Nestled into the base of Sundance, tucked away in the back of a main lodge along the Provo River, you will find a room growing around a single tree - this is called The Tree Room. It's hard to tell how it got its name. It is a restaurant with fine dining - but not like dress and tie. I would call it casual fine dining. You can find jeans and button up shirts mingling with suits and nice dresses. The food is exquisite. Scratch-made to taste and prepared to perfection, these chefs aren't playing with their Easy Bake Oven anymore. This is the big leagues and your taste buds will be aroused. Flavor combinations you haven't thought of. Meat melting in your mouth. Pursuit of perfection and you're the judge. And the chefs aren't the only ones bringing their A-game. The attentive waitstaff cater to your table and make sure you get all the information and service needed for an epic meal. But it all comes at a cost. Every restaurant at Sundance has its own special charm, but the Tree Room maybe most of all. The fact that there is an actual living tree that goes through the center of the restaurant makes it even more unique. Service here is what you'd expect at a fine dining restaurant. Everyone is friendly and attentive, but they also don't rush you through the meal. It's not a cheap place to dine, but if you're willing to splurge a little, you'll be rewarded with some of the best food around with impressive displays. The crudo appetizer in particular is Instagram worthy thanks to its dry ice feature. My wife and I have tried a few different dishes here, but the elk is our favorite. From the moment you arrive and are greeted , to being sat, the ridiculously small portions and over priced food, to the ego driven snobby attitude of the staff, it was all completely wrong. My wife and I have been coming to the tree room for 17 years. It's always been excellent service, an excellent ambience and excellent food, but not this last time we went. Service was fine, as normal. The place looks the same, but the food was subpar and more expensive than it has ever been. We got an extra basket of bread and a few extra butters and it totaled out to be an additional 30+ dollars for bread and butter. The pepper steak, which is a classic that we have enjoyed for years was overcooked, dry and noticeably smaller than that it normally is. The mango chutney has also changed and it was not good. The appetizers were fine, but nothing stood out as exceptional, which you would expect if your bill ends up being $600. read more

The Tree Room is an above average dining experience, but not by much., and certainly not a value for the price. The vibe is an A+. Sundance is as Zen as it gets and the Tree Room has a western elegance that is difficult to find anywhere. That, unfortunately, is where the special Ness ends. The service was mediocre. At first we thought it was just spacing dishes to allow us to enjoy the experience. We were abandoned most of the night as if the kitchen had to remind our server to deliver our food. We finished and waited a long 20 minutes before we finally had to ask for our check. The food quality was good, but not at $20 for a starter and $60 for a steak. The taste profile for every dish was okay, but not amazing. At those prices, a restaurant has to deliver amazing. Your best bet at Sundance is the Owl Bar. The tree room was recommended by a foodie friend who absolutely loves this place. He highly suggested the pepper steak and even advised that it's the best steak he's ever had. Of course, I had to follow suit and check out the place. I came with my foodie bestie and when I tell you we ate, WE ATE! Complimentary bread with a forest inspired butter spread was provided. It was a variety of bread! If I knew this was complimentary, we probably wouldn't have ordered so many appetizers. My favorite was the nutty cranberry bread and the focaccia. The butter was delicious! It was a mix of herbs, garlic and salt. Started with the carrot soup paired with a carrot muffin. Soup was chilled which threw me off a bit. I enjoyed the muffin more than the soup. The risotto is amazing! The langoustine, clam, rice was delicious! I tried the lobster foam but didn't really understand it. It reminded me of them alive making that foam.... Gnocchi is my favorite of all appetizers. This is the best gnocchi I've ever had! Very pillowy and oh so soft! Homemade and definitely a must try if you're dining in. The foie gras custard is a sweet appetizer. My least favorite. It was mixed with other stuff so I didn't really get to enjoy the taste of duck liver. There's fruit on top with a nice glaze on top. This should actually be on the dessert menu. Pepper steak was so good! I ordered it medium rare and each bite was delicious. There was a sweet mango chutney sauce that I could have done without, but overall a great dish! The bison ribeye was amazing! It was cooked rare. Forgot what that sweet jelly sauce drizzled over it, but it also could've been better without it. I wish it was the full ribeye and not served precut. Wonderful experience. The servers are amazing and so is the food. Definitely coming back to try the other entrees without any sweet sauce. My partner and I came here on Saturday night and had the most amazing experience dining here. The attention to detail with every course was outstanding. Our server, John, was so attentive and was very helpful in navigating the menu and helping us decide what we wanted to get. We decided to go all out and order the full course meal - we were already at Sundance in this beautiful restaurant, so why not have the full experience! We started with drinks - I got the Tree's Bees Knees (try saying that five times fast!) and my partner got the Mountain Cooler. The Bees Knees was delicious and had a strong cucumber taste to it which was very refreshing. We were so hungry and were thrilled to start off the meal with some delicious sourdough bread and herb butter - I wish I had taken a picture of the herb butter, the herbs on the outside of the butter were in the shape of an "S" for Sundance and it was just a great little detail. The server who was bringing out the bread even surprised us with two more pieces which was so sweet! For appetizers, we got the Scallops and the Mushroom Cannelloni - both were delicious. The Mushroom Cannelloni was melt in your mouth good, and the truffle and pesto combination was absolutely amazing. We also split the Roasted Fennel Salad, which was delicious and citrusy. We had debated each getting our own, but ultimately decided to split one and were glad we did. For the entrees, I got the Tagliatelle and my partner got the Tree Room Pepper Steak, which apparently has been on the menu since the 70's - so you know it's gotta be good! The Tagliatelle was just incredible - the combination of butternut squash, pomegranate, and greens, I'm drooling just thinking about it. My partner said the steak was one of the best he's ever had! To wrap up the meal, we ordered the cheesecake which was equally delicious, although we were so full I don't even know how we finished it. This place was such a great little splurge for us. This was a treat, we had never been here before. We were visiting our daughter & SIL in Saratoga Springs & went for a drive up to the Provo River. We were a little hungry so they decided to go to Sundance and see what they had. The shops were pricey but this restaurant was not as pricey as I expected and the ambiance, WOW! The menu is a little bit fancier than we're used to but we all managed to find something to eat and the food, service and drinks were great! I would definitely go back again, it's just so beautiful! A great spot for a group of friends, date night, or a nice family dinner. The menu is rotating so always new options. There are a few vegetarian options as well. The Pepper Steak is a must and is always on the menu. Was melt in your mouth good. The mushroom plate had an amazing sauce to die for!! Ok I can't recommend this place enough. The ambience is just over the top. I mean you're in the mountains what else do you need?!? I was already on cloud nine. Then the inside is like an old cozy cabin. I felt right at home in the Native American based decor and surroundings. Our seat was a couch! And so comfy and not what I was expecting. The light was candles and lamps at a low level so as not to scare one off with brightness. There was also a large crackling fireplace which is always giving of a homey feel. The servers were all kind and helpful and had matching cowboy shirts with bolo ties! I wanted to match them also. The food was the center of attention. We got the beet appetizer which just left me wanting more. The breads were all yum but I keep remembering the rolls with fruit in them that were hot out of the oven. Sooooo good! Then we had the steak and polenta entres and both of us were very happy with our dishes. The polenta is meat free and so filling of so many flavors! It sat on mole and was filled with black beans and sweet potatoes! I hope to try and copy it at home some time. The steak had jelly/jam on it and I'm told was a pleasant surprise to the pallet. For desert the sherbet tasted perfectly like yummy fruit leather! And doesn't cause the normal tummy ache after as your everyday ice cream does. We can't wait to go back again! My husband and I LOVED tree room! It was SO GOOD. We got the last reservation available on Valentine's Day for 8:30 and it did not disappoint. We got seated a little after our reservation time and it took a few minutes to get drinks and our order placed, but everything after that was very timely. My husband wasn't a huge fan of the bread or the pre-starter, but I thought they were really yummy. One of the breads had golden raisins in them- yum! We got the lobster gnocchi for our starter... it was incredible. I can't say enough good words about it. I want to come back just for that! My favorite thing. Came here for a work holiday dinner and it was intimate, exclusive, a hidden treasure that feels like you're in a different party of the country. The ambiance of this restaurant and the decor were on point. I feel like if you want to impress someone and just have an intimate dinner or meal, this is your place! Our waitress was knowledgeable in the menu and even suggested a few items based on her taste and experience. The menu was enticing. There were six of us and almost everyone tried something different on the menu. A good amount of choices on alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. I had the salmon bisque, pepper filet mignon steak, and for dessert a chocolate option and the fresh berries with cream - all were really good! The scallop appetizer was a little undone in the middle than I prefer, but it still had a good flavor. This is a white-cloth restaurant with waiters serving everything upon request, meaning they will not leave a basket of bread on your table. For the bread, bread is served upon request, as well as butter. Also, just a heads up, for a party of five or more, the restaurant automatically adds a 20% gratuity tip on the bill. read more

I've overlooked the Tree Room for as long as I've lived in Utah, but that was remedied this weekend when a friend with superlative taste came to visit. After a day of snowshoeing, we enjoyed a warm atmosphere, with a roaring fire, enormous views of the snow-covered pines, and Native American art. We enjoyed bison short ribs and butternut ricotta caramelle pasta with sage and crispy prosciutto. The butterboard that arrived with the bread was called Forest Floor. To finish, it was the Milk + Honey (goat cheese cake, raw honey comb and bischoff cookie and gooseberries) and the Chocolate and Balckberry (early grey ganache, blackberry curd, hibiscus and a chocolate branch). First time ever dining in the Tree Room, was told many years back that they had no prices on the menu and that if you had to ask you shouldn't be there. Scared me away. Probably was a rumor but was able to see the prices online and not scare me as much. The Tree Room at Sundance is consistently spectacular in terms of food and service. The mountain setting is gorgeous, the service is professional, and the seasonal menu is consistently delicious. The only drawback is that the experience is a bit pretentious and the prices are very high. This may be a plus for some, but I prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. The food was the only disappointment for $200 I was expecting my flavor palette to be taken on a journey. I got an appetizer,salad and a the elk loin in juniper sauce my friend got another main course a pasta dish. The salad was probably the best dish and the bread and butter were good but the appetizer and main courses were terribly bland for me they all blended together in an underwhelming sort of way needed a umami or salt flavor to attribute the elk and vegetables just super disappointing for a $69 meal. I will say the food presentation was great but they complicated the dishes too much, we don't need foam flavored toppings but to each their own. Have I just been completely disillusioned by the Tree Room? I've eaten at this restaurant many times over the years and it's always been a great experience, but this time it felt like the restaurant turned a weird corner and not in a good way. My party of two (partner and I) made a reservation for 5:45 on a Friday evening, arrived on time (parking was scarce even at this early hour, I agree with the other review that asked for designated parking for Tree Room guests). We were seated promptly, albeit in a center room table, which I didn't love, the booths are far more comfortable and less exposed. Felt like we were being stared at the entire evening. Can't knock the ambiance of the restaurant, it's rustic, cozy and adorned with Bob Redford photos. The menu changes quite often, and it had changed pretty significantly since the last time I was in a year ago. The Pepper Steak was the only item I recognized. We started with a couple of cocktails, the hot buttered rum and the gunslinger, and they were both pretty good, although the price point on the gunslinger ($29) was steep and the whiskey in the cocktail was High West and nothing special. Our waiter forgot what our drink order was and had to come back for reminding. We wanted to start with a couple of starters, but upon trying to order said starters to follow our drink orders, our waiter impressed upon is the strange need to put in all food orders in at the same time for the kitchen's sake. What kind of fine dining kitchen needs it all at once? Never experienced this request at the Tree Room nor any other fine dining restaurant. It felt rushed and it was uncomfortable. We took some more time with the menu and the waiter meandered over after a while to take the food order. We started with the wagyu beef cheek and fried green tomato, middle course of a seasonal soup (pumpkin curry) and Sundance salad, entrees we had the truffle chicken roulade and the elk loin. I ordered a glass of the cab with dinner, which again had an absurdist price point ($29/glass). They need more by the glass options. Wine was excellent however. I asked the waiter how the elk was cooked and he assumed I wanted to change the temperature (I didn't, only curiosity) and it was uncomfortable. He also asked "have you been here before?", but why does that matter anyway? Starters were ok, not sure the wagyu moniker on the beef cheek is a selling point (beef cheek is beef cheek) but the sauce and starch were tasty. Skip the fried green tomato. Tasteless and lacking any kind of bite or acid. Also to note: starters are BARELY shareable. Sundance salad is a skip, it's over dressed and mostly greens. Seasonal soup was easily the best part of the meal, it was perfectly puréed and absolutely delicious. The Entrees were ok, the chicken was tasty but the dish wasn't cohesive. The Elk loin was one of the worst cuts of meat I've ever eaten. It wasn't cooked poorly, I think it's a symptom of the leanness of the cut of meat. My jaw is sore the morning after from chewing through it. Berry gel didn't mesh well with the meat and the root vegetables and mushrooms added nothing to it. ($60). If you go, Stick to the pepper steak. We ordered the chocolate hazelnut dessert (not really shareable) and they stuck a birthday candle and a chocolate "happy birthday" sign on it for my partner and she was pleased. I ordered a double espresso and was charged 16 dollars when a single shot was on the menu for 4. At that point I was kind of over it, paid the bill ($360 with tip) and we left into the gorgeous Sundance evening, debating whether or not we'd be back. We probably won't. This was some of the best food and best service I have ever experienced. My favorite thing that I tried was the ricotta gnocchi appetizer. I would have eaten that as my entree. I do not rate many things a 10/10 but that was at the top of my list as a ten. My entree was the mushroom "scallops". The actual mushrooms were great, but I didn't love the accompanying ingredients. I do think that it was just personal preference, the food itself was great quality. I did not feel like drinking, so I got the citrus refresher and that was better than any cocktail I could have gotten from anywhere else. If I lived closer I would love to come here regularly, especially to try some of the other items on their menu. read more

We booked for Saturday night just to get away and have a nice dinner without the kids before Christmas. We were surprised when we got there that they had a tasting menu available with about 8 courses. We are so glad we did it. Every single dish was incredibly flavorful am prepared perfectly. Beautiful ambience! We arrived 20 minutes early and had to wait the full 20 minutes before being seated. The room is elegant but not overstated. Perfectly placed for the location. Our waitress was lovely and her support staff was quite attentive. We ordered the scallop appetizer and some beverages. I would've given them five stars but they were out of many of the beverages that were on the list. They start you out with a beautiful amuse Bouche. Very well thought out and nicely delivered. Then out came our appetizer. Delicious and well-placed. The bread service was amazing and the butter was nicely marked with the letter S for Sundance. Our waitress did amazing job of describing each of the items in answering our questions. I wish I could remember her name but she had a Nordic accent. I have food came out at a nice cadence as we enjoyed the ambience. Everything was perfectly cooked and so delicious. I ordered the mushroom tempura dish. So delicious and so uniquely plated. The swipe of miso was the perfect accompaniment to this fried delight. The other two guess I was with ordered the pepper steak. And they both enjoyed it very much. Very disappointing New Year's Eve experience at The Tree Room. My boyfriend had told me so many good things about this restaurant and I had very high expectations...plus the whole happiness of visiting Sundance again...I was beyond excited to say bye to 2017 in such a wonderful location at a fancy restaurant that does not normally open on Sundays but they did an exception because was NYE. Well, I would give 5 stars for the service, Bret was great every time I complained that my soup was cold and that maybe that artichoke entree I ordered was too sophisticated, but in my opinion I should be served hot and not semi frozen. He was very nice to us and did not change for that entree and offered the great dessert and mocha drink (even we insisted in paying for that). Kudos to the services but honestly, my food was not that great, especially the mushroom soup served cold and that experimental weird dish called artichoke. As per that particular dish, probably was my fault for not asking and assuming I would get some sort of classic grilled artichoke with some delicious sauce to dip or something. Maybe I don't have a sophisticated palate, but the mix of wild black rice hard as a rock with pine nut foam (tasted pine nuts but other than melting in your mouth did not add anything especial. Then an egg in the middle of the plate (super cold as well), and a couple of mushrooms...the artichokes...hum, like 2 small pieces that looked directly from a can. I felt bad because my boyfriend was taking me there like a special date and I could not avoid to feel disappointed. I tried to chew the composition but was inedible, sorry to say. It tasted horrible. As per the mushroom soup, the good part was the little pastry accompanying it, the soup was cold and was very common, nothing especial, I have had way better. My boyfriend liked his meat (I tried that and was really good) and I liked the octopus with pistachio cream, very original and nice. The restaurant itself is very charming, with a cozy waiting room where you can read books or relax by the fire pit. Very relaxing and rustic chic. read more
