Okay, so the guys that run this shop are a little hardcore and overenthusiastic about their love of the military and all things warfare...it does kind of come in handy when you need something in their field of expertise, creepy or not. And it is sort of creepy when you're greeted by a soldier figure with his hand blown off and immediately in front at the registers are cases full of knives. Some of them will be bought and used for hunting. Some will be bought by crazies who feel they are "being watched." But there's a lot of great stuff here, especially if you want to build up your camping supplies. They have freeze dried meals, cookware, canteens, wool blankets, ponchos, wellies, and less standard stuff like a portable outdoor shower that supplies hot water. Prices are pretty moderate. They also sell very cheap backpacks large enough for backpacking through Europe, your basic hoodies, belts, longjohns and thermals, and have a rad selection of crazy-ass hats. I tried on a fur-trimmed pilot cap that made me look like Amelia Earhart. Maybe if I was as kooky as some of the people that come in here I'd have bought it, but if I was going to buy anything it would have been one from their very complete and reasonably priced collection of gas masks from locales around the world. When I was at MUD, and it was time to do molds, we needed a pair of coveralls so that we wouldn't stain up our clothes. I wasn't too familiar with the area, so I tagged along with some fellow classmates. Supply Sergeant was the "go to" place for our needs. I scooped up a pair, trashed the shit out of them, and a couple of years after, I came back and bought me another pair of coveralls for my "Wes Borland" Halloween costume. It worked out well. I just about died when I first came to this place. Not only dies it have everything I could ever need in an emergency, it has all the essentials that my boyfriend needs. My boyfriend is a Navy vet and he is able to get his hands on just about anything that he had in the service. We ended up picking a nice pair of combat boots, bell bottoms, and a few other things. I am on the look out for a pea coat because I go through coats like socks (they get a nice wear and tear). I went there today looking to purchases some Multi-Cam Condor pouches and the place had about 2 other customers and 3 employees working. The Condor displays were a little dis-organized and I could not find what I wanted. I asked the 2 employees all the way on the left and got an irritated " I don't know if it's not there we probably don't have it" Keep in mind there are 3 employees working and on the clock with no sales being made. Great store! The right place for the tactical, camper, hiker, survival, and disaster emergency gear shopper to visit; (they have lots of products you can touch and measure up before you buy). They sell both new and used products. SERVICE: Was good and they always ask if I need help, and they're knowledgeable It's the simplest things that make a difference. LOCATION: It's not to far off the 5 fwy or the 134 fwy so it's easy to get to. Parking is on the street. PRICES: I shop online but I also consciously make an effort to support local business - spread the love if you will. Specific to the "not so expensive gear I've needed", my opinion is that it was cheaper than ordering from several online sources I checked after combining shipping cost (in some cases). In other cases prices were comparable enough to make it practical to drive there for the shopping experience, the advantage of seeing and touching the product to measure it up, before I buy, rather than wait online. I needed a prop gun for a Halloween costume and I couldn't find one anywhere. Whatever happened to the days when a kid could waltz into a Toys R Us and find an aisle full of toy guns? Now you'd be lucky to find anything other than Nerf crap. Even costume stores have a paltry selection, with the most intimidating guns being relegated to inflatable-only. Luckily, as I was driving down the street my buddy spotted this store and said we should check it out. Surplus stores are full of rad stuff, but I always get slightly uneasy before heading in because of Falling Down. Yes, the Michael Douglas movie. The one where Frederic Forrest plays a deranged surplus store owner. Anyway, good call on my friend's part, because they had almost exactly what I needed. The prop gun I bought was inexpensive and it even fires BBs, but the guy said the power behind it is so weak I might as well not even bother. The crazy thing is that I had to sign a waiver stating that I wouldn't paint the orange tip black because it's now a felony. Apparently, the only way these guns can even be sold in CA is if someone signs a waiver upon purchase. Otherwise, they would have been banned altogether. Kinda nuts. read more

Even though I live at the southern tip of LA county, I'll make the drive up here because their selection of various goods is awesome. They have every color of dickies pants the company makes, their selection of shrink to fit 501s is fantastic, they have genuine peacoats (which I love) and their scooter parkas are always in stock. The armored personnel carrier outside is not for sale. But there's great everyday stuff for disaster preparedness, camping, and hiking. There's even a large clothing section with jeans, pea coats, hats, etc. Or you can go off the deep end with gas masks, Kevlar helmet, and night vision goggles. They've got every pin and medal you can imagine, even from foreign militaries. The staff is very friendly and helpful. While the prices may not seem like a huge bargain, I think you get a higher quality product for the same prices at a sporting goods store. read more

To be sure, there's not a shortage of surplus stores around the LA area...but this one is higher on my list than some others for a few reasons, and here they are: 1. I've bought a lot of misc items here over the years...I like this place a lot partly because it's well lit and a lot cleaner than most "surplus" stores. In some stores the air is just thick with a nasty stank, and you feel dirty when you leave...like they graverobbed the uniforms and neglected to wash 'em (I'm thinking of the one store on Colorado Blvd in Glendale specifically, but a lot of them invoke that feeling). 2. The staff is really nice...they don't bug ya' at all....so if you just feel like roaming around the aisles, curiously poking at stuff or trying things on...get at it....but, if you need assistance or info on any of the TONS of random things they have, they are all very friendly and willing to help you out. I was asking some specific questions regarding variations of uniform colors, ranks, etc...and they were very helpful indeed. Took some time to walk me around the store showing me stuff and explaining the uses for a lot of it. ...Not that I couldn't have researched what I wanted to know on google, but it's nice to get info the old fashioned way every now and then. 3. As I mentioned above, they have a TON of cool stuff.... loads of cool new and vintage backpacks (I got a south Korean field pack that's super cool, and has some a crazy amount of wrapping straps for stuff and some awesome handwritten Korean text written on the underside... don't know what it says... but it looks awesome!)... the have a really good selection of camping gear... they sell tents, rafts and oars (the wooden oars are $9.95... that's a good deal), lot's of hats and caps (not just military ones either)... and, of course, lot's of cool military jackets and whatnot. The prices on most everything are pretty good too. 4. They are dog friendly (which is good since my Dachshund goes with me most everywhere, and some places, like that rat-trap I mentioned earlier on Colorado, are really weird about bringing your dog in, even if you carry it... like it's gonna infect their already mangey merch!). Seriously, with the loss of the Army/Navy places on Hollywood Blvd and in Van Nuys, the place is now, unquestionably, the best surplus store in LA. Even if you don't need to buy anything, it's a blast to just walk around the store and check out the stuff they have. And, probably, you're going to end up buying something anyway, because they have so much good stuff. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. And completely reasonable prices too. This is a fun store! They have a nice assortment of survival gear, and a ton of clothing. I came in specifically to find a roll up air mat for my daughter to sleep on, as we were having an overnight at the Pacific of the Aquarium the next day. The floors are hard, and a friend of mine who had previously stopped in told me they had some on sale. I found one last mat, there were plenty of other types, but I wanted budget. I got it. I liked all the camping gear and survival items, I will definitely be stopping here when I need to refresh my safety kits. Having worked retail, I do believe that any employee whose presence is in the front where people walk into the store, should always greet the customer. I did have a question on an item and the same counter employee was very deeply into his paperwork, and that doesn't bode well for me. If it weren't for the customer, they wouldn't have a paycheck! I mean, you can at least look up and smile...! One star off for their lack of customer greeting service. Other than the one employee, I did have great conversation with two other employees, one fellow who appeared to be the owner, and they were fantastic. Thought I had written a review for this place already but guess not. This place is probably the best military surplus store I been to. First, it's huge. Second, people are helpful. Third, they carry trip wire. Yes, trip wire. I always wanted to own some trip wire, just cause you never know if you need to set up a booby trap! I walked in probably three years ago, went to one of the guys there and asked if they carried trip wire. The guy handed me a spool of multicolored trip wire. And it was under $2! He also had a FM on Booby Traps, so I bought that too, since it was quite informative, showing how to make a booby trap with candy bars! Great Army Field Manual indeed. This place is located not far from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I think I walked down from there and just stumbled upon this gem of a store. If I am ever back in Los Angeles I will making a stop here. read more

I've been to this store a few times for various things needs. Every time, I go away feeling irritated. In essence, the employees that work there seem to suffer from these two basic traits. 1- They don't seem to know much about the products they sell 2- they don't seem interested at all in helping you. I ask one young man about a type of lantern ( Gas type , for camping) ..he didn't even know what I was talking about and clearly could care less when I explained to him what it was. Then, I asked a mid 30's age man another question about something....He hardly looked up from the job he was doing...( hanging up some inventory ..) and just dismissed by question quickly by saying ... No .. we don't have anything like that..." No inquiring about something else he could suggest....Just a "NO... don't Bother me...Can't you see I'm busy! Don't ask me questions... kind of response... I won't be going back there again... I've tried to give them my business at least three times and the people that run that place are just rude and not helpful at all.... By the way... After leaving Supply Sergeant .. I went across the street to BIG 5....The manager there was actually on the floor putting stuff on shelves and he actually took the time to answer my question and give me some helpful advice. Military Surplus Supermarket. Not everyone likes military surplus stores. Too many people hate war, hate armies, or are scared off by the way military surplus stores are portrayed in Joel Schumacher movies, but this is a great store. I'm not really into war stuff too much, but I like camping and hiking, so outdoors stores and military surplus stores are like a second home to me when I'm getting ready for a trip. This place is absolutely huge. It spans the width of 5 or 6 stores and has just tons of cool stuff. I love just digging through some of the back rooms and seeing all the weird old war stuff they have for sale. If you want to buy part of a submarine periscope, they have that. Old military radio from Vietnam? They have that. The other great thing besides the selection here is that the guys who run this store are nice. They'll help you find what you need and answer any questions you have about any of the clothes or equipment. You can also find some really great deals buried here and there in the store. Lots of the brand new clothes are just normally priced, but hey have a few used clothes sections and some clearance stuff where you can really clean up. It's also a great place to buy bandages and supplies for survival kits (I build my own so I know what's in 'em). So check it out if you're into outdoors stuff, just need some supplies, want a cool army shirt, or are looking for a friend who collects periscope parts. I love and hate this store all at once. Don't get me wrong, it's a really amazing location for all sorts of camping equipment, survival equipment, uniform pieces and even costume pieces in a pinch. The only problem is that it's basically the only one of its kind in the area, and I'm sure the owners know that, so they charge a pretty penny for most of their stock. Plus, there isn't nearly enough actual military uniform surplus for my taste. They sell a mixture of actual surplus uniform pieces, located on the far right wall, but most of the selection is of brand new t-shirts, jackets, Dickies and various other factory-new uniform pieces. Their surplus selection is decent, but pricey. However, I have to admit, I keep coming back. Their staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and they have just about anything and everything you'd ever need as far as uniform pieces go. Patches, bags, haversacks, parachutes, helmets, hats, boots. There's even a section of airsoft weapons. Great for production costuming and props. 3/5. And definitely say hello to the parrot in back. The entire staff helped me find every size and gave me options for every single item. They are kind, helpful, patient and seriously helped me deliver the most epic costumes for talent I was producing for a big video game event. Da wife and I went in as I was looking for an oversize bag/duffle bag to put my supplies in. As soon as you walk into da joint you can smell it. That dank musky smell of used clothing. The images of Army surplus stores from my childhood raced through my mind. This is the real McCoy. There were loads of families in there yesterday, presumably shopping for Halloween costumes. One of the store employees dressed in jungle camouflage was making his rounds when da wife asks him "if he's hot in there?" The guy replies, "well I always thought I was hot!" LOL The staff is definitely helpful besides having a great sense of humour. I did find my bag, a German NATO pilots bag. They had used and a new one. I opted for the new, but even the used ones looked great. They do have a lot of different items. From military surplus and new outerwear. Just too much to absorb at one time.
