Been dying to shop at Val Surf and heading to the airport THE GODS heard me and directed my GPS to navigate me to Val Surf. With the store in my sites I pulled a hard right without rolling the SUV I was driving and parked... Amazing surf shop for goodie , surf boards and skateboards. Grabbed my Val Surf logo sweatshirt and a weird Nike shirt cause it was kick a$$ white with hot pink drawing... Now I explored and found great surf gear from major brands I won't mention but the shoe selection was amazing, especially the VANS. The suede leather Vans were awesome and I desperately wanted a few pairs but I didn't have room in luggage.... As I was walking past UGG's display they had the sand color version and again if I had room I'd bought a pair... Super cool " Dude " handling cashier duty's was awesome. The over the top skateboard decks blew me away located behind him and I only wish I was 12 again so I pester my parents for one... we had a good laugh about age and away I went... NOTE : Speaking of killer items and this wasn't for sale was wooden shoe by Vans with images of old school pro skaters including the "Godfather of pool skating" Mr Tony Alva! For those who don't know him well he was a member of the Zephyr Competition Skateboarding Team, or the Z-Boys.... Can't wait to come back and I'll have a bigger luggage bag for more gear. We took our 8 year old son to pick out his first real skateboard and this was an overall great experience. Gaul showed us everything we'd need and recommended components appropriate for kiddo's skill level, then had our son help put the trucks on. We went straight to the skate park to test it out and he's super happy. It's clearly a superior ride to his $39 Target board. I went to this store when I first got in town from Utah back, 39 years ago, it was great back then... And even better now, they got everything. I can't stress enough, the service is excellent. I just brought in all the parts to have my skis put together, as I had custom parts, because I wanted exactly what I wanted, out of a Ski package. Thankfully, they made it very easy and put together my skis and bindings for for cheaper you can get it done at REI or any other ski shop I called, and quickly over the holiday, which I didn't think the turnaround would be as quick as they were able to do it. Knowledgeable sales staff, who never rush you, and take the time to answer even the most basic questions. Bought my first snowboard here 18 years ago when I didn't even know how to ride. The salesman could tell I was a newbie but never treated me like one. He took his time and really explained everything and his enthusiasm guided me towards a board bindings and boots (an Arbor Roundhouse with a beautiful wood finish, tortoise Burton bindings that matched the board so beautifully it was like they were made for each other. I have bought several set ups from them over the years, and they always have really cool clothes, shoes and boots. They love getting people out in the snow and I've got to say, they were a big part of my love affair with riding. And I am happy to say that I went in just the other day, because I was thinking about getting a new board, and they walked me through every product line, explained the differences in the models, and really took their time. I've been surfing for almost a half a year and buying boards and going into surfing with a blind eye is a little scary. But when I came to Val Surf shop, I felt so welcome,friendly and just the family sense this shop illuminates. I am especially grateful for the surfing department staff, in particular, Eric and Kyle D and the help they provided me with. I learned a lot from Eric about the poacher board and taught me other little things as well. When I came into today to buy a board, Kyle D took an hour out of his day to answer all of my kook questions and I just felt really prioritized and appreciated. If every place could have the customer service and people oriented skills that Kyle D and Eric demonstrated the multiple times I have been to Val Surf Shop, this world would be a better place! I wanted to come on Yelp to give a shout out to the rental department at the Val Surf in Sherman Oaks. Not only did we find a much better renting experience getting gear off mountain, this staff is wonderfully chill and super kind. We had a couple of really crazy experiences related to our ski trips and both times the staff went over and above to help us out when they didn't have to. They totally sympathized when the school ski trip went very wrong and gave us a rain check on the rental, showing great humanity and kindness. That in itself made me a big fan. Then when my daughter's skis accidentally got taken by another customer on mountain, they helped track down the other customer so the skis could be swapped back. They made sure that we knew not to ski on the set that wasn't tuned to my daughter's boots, because they didn't want her to get hurt. They really cared and what business does that nowadays? Basically, these folks showed the cool side of the ski and surf life and I for one find them totally rad. read more

Grew up in the valley, been coming here over the years for random surf stuff. Finally took up snowboarding last season, and last month it was time to drop the rental and buy my own board. The selection here is great, but the real 5 stars go to David, who kindly went through my millions of questions and helped me narrow down a final choice, including a pair of bindings for the new snowboard I ended up going with. This is a family run business that specializes in skate,surf and come Winter, snow centric gear and apparel. Yes, it can be pricey at times. The old adage "You get what you pay for" would apply. It's been around for, let me think about it, before cell phones and for those that can remember across the street. It's my go to for a tune up and wax before I roll up to Mammoth,Utah or Colorado to get my Mountain on. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff that knows their stuff. In an age when the big box sports stores are dying out it's refreshing to visit and old friend that isn't afraid to make you feel at home. I've always been very hesitant to go to a Val Surf store because of some stories I've heard. Two weekends ago I lost a snowboard strap while boarding and had gotten it repaired on the mountain. 4 runs later, it broke off. Planned a last minute trip to go again tomorrow and REI doesn't have binding parts in stock so I deferred to Val Surf. AMAZING. All staff were especially friendly and helpful. Never had to flag anyone down. Every staff member that passed by/saw me asked how I was doing and if I've been helped. Will helped me out with my binding repair. I came in nervous thinking I'd have to spend unnecessary money but this wasn't the case. I really appreciate the help I got today. I highly recommend checking out Val Surf for any related needs. The fact that they still do ski rentals is definitely a plus. The hoops they make you jump through to rent suck. I have multiple reservations throughout this ski season. When I called to add another weekend to what I already have reserved, they told me that can only be done in person and only if I make an appointment online beforehand. They are about half an hour or so away from where I live, so it will take 90 minutes or so just to see if they have availability for the weekend that I want to add. They would not connect me to the rental desk to find out. An online appointment and a trip out there is apparently the only way I can even see if a reservation for an additional weekend is available to book. Ridiculous? I think so. However, another plus is that whenever I've gone in, the people that work there were very pleasant and helpful. read more

The workers at Val Surf have ALWAYS helped me find what I need whether the item is in the store, at one of their other stores or a special order. Go do your research... How many surf shops do you know has some of their staff go to Tavarua every year to surf Cloudbreak & Restaurants? And they go EVERY year... I go to Val Surf for all my bodyboarding, surfing & skateboard needs. My friends that snowboard get all their gear here. We rented out ski this weekend guys are very friendly and with knowledge to make sure they get you right equipment. It costs us only $38 for 2 days to rent ski with poles and boots. Make sure to make a reservation in advance if you want to rent something. They are the only one place in LA who rents out skis and snowboards, so all equipment goes out fast and they are really busy everyday. This place has always been the go to for gear for my family and while it can be a Zoo around the holidays, my experience today made me a lifer. Just after new years 2023, I bought a pair of Burton snowboard boots for my son. For a variety of reasons, he never got to use them until this past weekend (a year later). When he went to put them on- he had 2 Right boots that were different sizes and models. I brought them in and despite the year having passed they made it right with no hassle.
