Was in the store looking to get a rental. I walked in without being greeted, then was proceeded to be asked how I could be helped after a couple minutes. Once I said I was looking for a boogie board rental - the gentleman asked how I could be helped, proceeded to try and shame me for it saying the beach there doesn't allow it. But yet they do rentals. I'm not sure if it's a Malibu thing or if this guys business is just the pretentious. If you rent boogie boards, you probably shouldn't shame those that are going to rent them from you. A simple - drive a little bit this way to this beach and you're golden, rather than being a complete dick. I then proceeded to stand there with my hand in my pockets as he was helped someone else. Located right off the Malibu coast where you can enjoy all the water sports you want. Jay himself is really cool, and his employees are super nice and knowledgeable. They are covid complaint with plexi glass and masks. And what better way to keep you body healthy than to social distance while surfing? They have a few parking stalls but it's mainly street parking. The prices are unbeatable - for $35 we got 2 surf days (one evening and the following morning). jay was super accommodating when we were running a bit late to return the boards. Where do I begin? If you want to support a local shop, this isn't it. Don't give your business to someone who treats potential customers as rudely as this guy Jay does. My daughter was in the tiny shopping center where this shop is located. She also works in a surf shop and was looking forward to shopping at this shop. She briefly walked across the street to pick up her takeout food order. Upon returning to her car, finds that the shop has closed and her car's been locked in the parking lot. We tried contacting all the places in the shopping center to try to get information about how she could get her car out. It was a little after 7:00pm. Obviously, the shops had closed by then and she realized she made a mistake leaving her car there, even briefly. She emailed every business as none of them had voicemail when she tried calling them. Ended up walking 3 miles to her place. This morning, tried calling again and was told her car would be towed. Asked for the towing company's information so she could follow up with them and instead was berated by the surf shop's owner for causing him so much trouble. Literally yelled at her for being on his property. He told her that even though he didn't need her spot (and the lot was empty) he was still going to get the car towed. After trying to reach the towing company without any luck, was told that her car wasn't towed and that it was there for her to retrieve. Real deal local surf shop. This is a place for surf essentials like wax, leashes, wetsuits, etc. Nice selection of fins!! It's not one of those Ron Jon-style "surf shops" that's more of a clothing store. They do good prices on board rentals too. For me, however, the coolest thing is the selection of surf literature (books). Some crazy old self-published stuff with generations' worth of insider knowledge lurking around on those shelves. read more

I've driven by Zuma Jay's countless times on my way to work, always wanted to check it out, a short drive from Kanan but never have had the time to stop. We just stayed in Malibu for Memorial Day weekend, and we ended up in the shop three times for everything we needed..let me repeat. Everything you need for the beach at a great price. Again.... Quick service. No line. I hated having to cross the street with all equipment on (because the shop where you pay and get your equipment is across the ocean- you have to cross the PCH). Other than that, they have the kayak on the other side of the street. 2 men meet you there and help you pick an entrance with less waves and guide you in. My bf and I flipped over 3 seconds into it. I usually hate surf shops. I went in there on my way up to CL to pick up a bar of wax which isn't something I was relishing. The guy, Jay I assume, and I had a brief and intelligent conversation, he treated me like I was totally worthy to be there in his little cave. I gave him ten one dollar bills and scored nine bars of sex was like it's 1973 or something. I was digging this. I'm going to go back and buy an Oneil wetsuit one if these winter's. I haven't found a better deal on beach kayak rentals elsewhere! $45 for a 2-person kayak for 24 hours! Such a great deal! Other places are around $20/hour. I don't know about Zuma Jay, but his staff was pretty helpful. They set up the kayak with back supports and wheels. The kayaks, life vests and paddles were all very clean. The staff also pointed out a slightly hidden entrance to the beach that takes you to an area where there are very few people. The store has a lot of surfing items - clothes, boards, waxes, etc. I don't know much about surfing so I can't really recommend Zuma Jay as a place to go for surfers. The store is across the street from the beach on Pacific Coast Hwy (PCH) in Malibu. Sidenote: I saw 3 sealions (2 of them were very small and they were playing with each other!), jellyfish, a school of fish, and lots of large pelicans diving into the water for fish. Most terrible place ever. I rented from them 3 days in a row payed every time upfront. I rented a surfboard and 4 boogie boards and because I had a bad back they loaded everything up in my car. The Finn broke off the board when we tried getting the board off the car. When we brought it back the owner flipped out saying fuck you don't come back here get the fuck out off my property based on their fault. I was trying to be professional and a loyal customer and this asshole of an owner got into my cousins face and threatened our lives. Telling us that he's ex military and he was looking for a fight. He told me to go fuck myself. I wouldn't recommend this place. Terrible owner terrible staff. They don't even follow Covid protocols the owner doesn't wear a mask and they all don't wear gloves. Such a shitty place. Iv never seen such horrible customer service. read more

I was really looking forward to Zuma Jay's but was disappointed upon arrival. The shop was fine and the merchandise was good but Mr Wagner left a little to be desired. He wasn't rude (necessarily) but seemed OVERLY interested in the business side over the surf side. I went in just wanting to check the shop out, maybe buy some boardshorts or a shirt, and pick up some stickers. When I got the stickers and went to pay, he questioned whether I had cash (side note, there was a COVID-19 sign as soon as you come in saying that masks are required for service... Yet he wasn't wearing a mask and this surf shop is VERY tight. And No, I'm not crazy concerned about catching COVID). I told him that hardly anyone carries cash anymore especially with the pandemic going on. He said he had to sell at least $3 "just to break even", so I bought some combs and allowed him to over charge me by $1 so he could make a buck (literally). When I asked for a bag he seemed put off a bit. The associate ringing the sale got a container from behind the counter and selected a bag from a wide variety of other places, I just so happened to receive a small McDonalds bag. Before I left Mr Wagner stated "just remember you got a $4 investment in there". I can't say EXACTLY what he meant but judging by the other conversations he had with customers in the store (excuses for not delivering product on time, etc) it had to do with me wanting a bag to carry 6 stickers and 3 combs. In baseball, we call that "Bush league" Pretty sure McDs would like to know that he is using their bags to increase his profit margin. I've gotten a few things here -- trying to come in only when Jay's uptight trophy-wife, Candace wasn't here. I couldn't agree with Sharon B. more; this woman definitely is everything Sharon said and more -- she is "White Privilege" personified. I bought a board from the shop (my second board and first thruster) and it surfs ok -- not nearly as good as my Con. And I've bought wax, towels and a couple of t-shirts. When she *was* in it was as though she couldn't wait for me to get out of the shop; she's a piece of work, for sure and I don't get it because Jay's such a great guy. read more
