Hello Big 5 Sporting Goods - Studio City! It's been a hot minute since I strolled in and found some fun finds, including a par of awesome combat boots in my size (13). Even though I was more on a browsing expedition with one item set in mind the Big 5 Sporting Good Crew of SC was super friendly, personable and very much supportive of one another as well as all customers in the store. It's a boutique style Big 5 - located on Ventura Place between Laurel Canyon Blvd and Radford Avenue, parallel to Venture Blvd. I don't pop in much as other locations speak to me a little better in terms of what I need or might be looking for. All locations could use a modern update or some tlc - it does feel a bit like a 90s time capsule... I did luck in a portable fan, double AA battery powered and perfect for a humid and/or super sunny day. Batteries are reasonable here as well. Good deals on sporting goods, beach gear, apparel, indoor and outdoor goods. I can't remember the last time I saw a Big 5 that carried firearms but this is one of the locations. Obviously they aren't loaded and it's all about safety first, but it caught me off guard with so many families and kids in the store. They carry a huge variety of everything from tents and canopies to baseball gear and softball equipment. Swimwear, camping things and even have in-store as well as online sales, deals and coupons. Street and private lot parking with access through the alley, making it easy during Sundays with the Farmers Market direct in front along the street. Hours vary through the week, but service and selection is always consistent. read more

I am happy Big 5 still is here I would rather shop in store than on line. Especially when I get great customer care service from someone like Tory at the studio city location. She started by assisting me on the phone and having the clothes ready for me to try on when I got there. She was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I know this store has been here in Studio City forever, which is nice, but I have never visited till recently. I was looking for a cooler (certain brand, size) to replace the one we have been using at picnics for many years and it starts to break a bit here and there. I saw on line that they carry the same brand, same model, just a new look. It was on sale, so I had to stop by, right? I was in the area, so it was easy, but didn't park in their lot. Big store, but not overwhelming, with lots of merchandise, great selection. It was easy to find the cooler section, they had the model we were looking for, on sale, so we picked and chose since they had a few and off we went to pay for it. Large and clean store, however, service is now nonexistent. The prices are higher than ordering items online, I had some questions and was hoping for advice before purchasing, but honestly, we left and purchased what we needed online instead. While each Big 5 has a decent selection, I've had issues with customer service at other locations - luckily this was not the case today. I was looking for help finding fishing gear for a trip up to Castaic Lake. I was greeted by Jada upon entry, she was kind, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. Not only was she super patient with me, but she herself is an avid fisherman and gave me so many great tips and helped answer any and all questions I had. Kudos to Jada for being an excellent sales associate, she helped me find all the right gear for a great price. read more

I got to give credit where credit is due: Big 5 has everything you need for all things sporting. Over the years I have gotten so many good things here: Athletic shoes, compression socks, winter gear, workout clothes, pepper spray, a shotgun, hot and cold wraps, baseball caps, yoga mats, dumbbells, ankle and wrist weights, sunglasses, snacks, water bottles, bathing suits, swim caps and goggles, and the humble bag of beef for jerky. My athletic shoes were totally thrashed, so today I came by for a new pair. A big shout out to the customer service rep who helped me today, a nice gal named Eli. She was polite, helpful, hard-working, and introduced me to a new brand of shoe I've never wore before called Saucony. I wound up buying my tried and true New Balance and the Saucony athletic shoes also, along with some compression socks, multipurpose sports care wrap, and a hot and cold pack. I threw in a new little bottle of pepper spray to carry in my bag (always wise to be protected). I feel good to continue on with my power walking thanks to Big 5. read more

This Big 5 is large and has a good selection. They have some nice coats and other outer wear. I was very happy with their shoe selection. Parking is easy in their large lot. The service was very nice. It took a minute to get help, but it was pretty crowded so I thought the wait was more than reasonable. I will be back to this location. read more

Just visited friday morning 1/3/25 around 10 am. While i was shopping the manager on duty was verbally chastising one of her employees right next to me!!! Now i dont know what he did, maybe it was real bad, but implying your employees are too stupid to be trusted with anything is crazy, Even crazier to do it to their face on the floor, and crazier still to do it right in front of a customer! I was gonna buy something, but i didnt feel comfortable in the store any more. Real icky. read more

BEWARE of the manager named Julie, mid day was going to shop in Big 5 so i parked in their lot, ran next door to grab a coffee first and came back 20 minutes later, only to find out my car was gone. I'm leaving the same review for both Big 5 Sporting Goods in Studio City and Encino since my review is the same for both. I grew up going to Big 5 as a kid with my dad so now as an adult I chose to do my business with them. I signed up for their members email and received a 10% off coupon. I proceed to go to Studio City store first. The gentlemen working was not very friendly and brushes me off with my coupon and said the coupon was for Dick's Sporing goods. I was taken back at the terrible customer service and bravado he backed it with. Anyway I moved on and still bought a knife I didn't plan on. The original knife I wanted supposedly didn't apply for the promotion even though I saw it online. Two weeks later I go to the same studio city location since I got an email for their one day sale for waterproof outdoor blankets. Now it was woman rep that brushed me off and said they didn't sell those blankets there. Even though I got an email and their website said they were in stock. I left and went to the to the Encino store. Again, unfriendly girl who said they didn't sell those there. When I insisted she made ME ( the customer) to look for the SKU # in my phone and show her. As I did that, the manager walked out and said they do have them and pointed to where they were. It's so disappointing to see a company have such poor execution in training their employees. Not sure if they have the same owner but they need to spend money on training and customer service. It's ridiculous that the customer knows more about the specials and the company than their own employees. As of now I'm doing the drive to REI in Burbank. Manager Luis was incredibly rude. Parked early to grab a coffee and wait for the store to open. Came back and my car was towed. I later found out he called the towing company 5 minutes after I had parked. I will never shop here again, and recommend everyone boycotts this location for how horribly they treat customers. read more

If you're not looking for home workout equipment, this location has just about everything else in stock. Needing some new hiking shoes, I had no problem getting help trying on a variety of different styles and brands. The guys in the shoe Dept. were very friendly and helpful. I can't ever recall having a bad experience in this location. read more

So I just tried returning an item that I had not even removed from the box. The lady at the register inamed Gaby could not have been more unfriendly. There was no warm greeting. She acted bothered to have to wait on me. When I gave her the reason for returning it she gave me such a bad attitude. She acted like she was not going to take the return even though I had the receipt and it was not that long ago when I bought it. She then said she'd have to get approval from her manager. He finally approved it yet but when Gaby heard that I didn't have the same credit card (because I had to get a replacement) she gave me more grief. I've been a customer there ever since they opened in 2001. Never going back. read more

Towed our car while we were parked to shop at Big 5 with our toddler. We had arrived before the store opened, and while walking around to kill time, they towed our car. The manager, Luis, was incredibly rude about it. It cost us $500 to browse for toys at Big 5. read more

i would not recommend shopping here. the staff is ill informed, at best. i asked for ammunition based on my weapon. i was sold the wrong ammo. ammunition cannot be exchanged. i know that. why was i sold the wrong ammo? because the clerk took no time in assessing what kind of weapon i had, and sold me something wrong. even after explaining to him that i had no knowledge of what was proper, and him assuring me it was the right stuff, he was wrong. they just don't care about customer satisfaction. i got the right thing from some place else. shop there. read more

My wife and daughter went to this Big 5 location in Studio City to look for shoes today. The first employee they encountered spent about five minutes working with them before abruptly disappearing. They kept waiting for him to return, and ultimately ended up flagging down a second employee, Aiden. They had a great customer experience with him - he was very friendly, kind, patient, and helpful. It would be great if more employees at this location treated customers the way Aiden did. read more

Big 5 is sort of the trailer park of sporting goods stores, but it's always nice not to have to pay REI prices. Still, at least at REI they act like they're happy you're there. The staff at this store either couldn't care less, or they actively tell you to go away. After checking online and seeing a 9pm closing time, I headed over and arrived at 8:32. "We're closed!" snarled a manager type through the closed and locked glass doors. "But look," I said, showing him their own webpage on my phone through the glass, "it says that you close at nine..." "That's WRONG!" he said, and walked away. No apology. No "okay, we just closed, but do you know exactly what you want?" No customer service at this place. Go somewhere else. Big 5 Sporting Goods has the worst customer service I have ever experienced, poor management, and an extreme lack of empathy. I parked at their store with the intentions of buying new soccer equipment for my rec soccer league, and grabbed a coffee quickly not thinking it would be an issue. 10 minutes later, my car was towed and it will cost me 400 dollars. I am a working actor who is currently unemployed because of the strikes. I simply cannot afford this. I explained my situation to the manager, and he was incredibly unhelpful and didn't offer solutions to help me. You would think this company would be willing to even try and help me. It is a disappointment and I will never shop here again. Future customers beware- this company definitely has a deal with the towing company to steal your money. A shame and a scam. read more

Great parking. Great service. Organized store. I went in looking for hiking boots and within seconds an employee approached me to see if I needed help with anything. Oscar was helpful, friendly, and efficient. I was in the store for a total of 20 minutes and that's a huge plus for me because I don't like shopping. Tried 3 hiking boots on and left with 2 of them. The girl at the register was also nice. Overall, great experience and would definitely come back again! read more

Cashier, shelf straightener, shoe girl, ski department, bullet counter, yep, first jobs rule! Since then this store has definitely gone a bit downhill, I mean without me straightening the tennis rackets, is it any wonder, hehe. Other than that, it's a good one stop for goods to sport with, but if you really want to go to a good Big 5 hit the San Vicente store, much cooler. read more

The best thing about this Big 5 is that it exists, and there's a private lot. So yes, this is a Big 5. They have the things you would expect from a Big 5. There is a private parking lot which is HUGE for this area. It's very convenient that I know I'm going to be able to find parking, and that it's right next door to the store. The main thing that detracts from this location is the staff, or rather lack-thereof. I don't know what it is, but I shop here pretty frequently and I usually can never find someone that works here, other than the person at the register and even then that's pretty hit-or-miss. I've tried to try some shoes on before and given up. I've looked around the store to ask someone a question and been unable to find someone. There have been experiences when I have found someone, asked for help, and either been completely ignored, brushed off, or given a half-hearted/inattentive answer. I think they just need to hire more people maybe? read more

This review is only towards an employee named Gabby, My friend and I had went in for a couple of gatorades to quench our thirst, we then had asked the closest employee for the restroom and where we can find it, which was Gabby, she then hesitated to help us and insisted that the bathroom had been out of order. We then asked another employee if there was a restroom we can use and he said "yes ", and that the bathroom was and has BEEN working with no problem. She then gave us a huge attitude since we walked in and seemed bothered by checking out our items. This is definitely not the attitude a customer service employee should have I was very disappointed! The worst customer service I have ever had!!! Cutting a very long story short. But basically I was told I could do a return... when I got to the store, I tried speaking to a representative called Dianna who looked at me with a blank expression and then proceeded to say no to the return in an awfully ignorant manner. A manger then came and assisted me and she was able to do the return. While doing the return I overheard Dianna on the telephone answering a customers question. She's then hung up and asked the manager about the question!!! Meaning she wasn't 100% on her answer. So I said to Dianna that before she gives an answer to a customer she should check facts with a manger first and Dianna started arguing back with me and then shouted "well don't come back to this store then" I am in absolute shock!!!! They have a small collection of baseball and softball bats, all mixed together in kid and adult size...only found one I liked and I asked about a return policy from the cashier (the season was ending and I wasn't sure it was really the right weight for me). Girl at the register told me I just needed the receipt, nothing else. Came back to return it, and the manager dude or whoever he is proceeded to not only tell me I should have kept the plastic, but pulled out the ACTUAL paper return policy and read the damn thing to me like I was speaking Martian or something. I was just in this store. Two idiot managers were having some kind of a discussion which sounded like they were trying to see who was the most important. I asked where there was a mirror, it happened to be right in front of where they were standing. They did not have the courtesy to move out of my way and when I politely asked them to relocate, one of them suggested I go to another mirror. Rude, entitled men without courtesy for me as a customer, as a woman looking in a mirror, or a human in the time of COVID. I would have taken my business elsewhere if I had time. Went in to do some Christmas shopping, found lots of good deals plus they had at $10 off every $35 worth of purchases and that's a great deal! Along the way I was looking for a knife to have my car for emergencies and the clerk recommended a great item! Overall the experience was fantastic even though the clerk with the knife suggestion was a little spastic the final clerk gave me all the discounts appropriately for spending over $100! read more
