I've heard a lot of great things about this place and decided to check it out myself. The inside had a super cool dive bar vibe. There is writing all over the ceilings and new guests are welcome to sign the walls when they leave. We came here for lunch on a Tuesday and it wasn't busy at all. I've heard that there is normally a wait on the weekends though. My friend and I go the classic margarita and the blackberry lemonade mojito. They were both super tasty! For food we got the BBQ bacon burger and the sink burger. Both of the burgers were cooked perfectly and very delicious! I recommend this place for anyone visiting Boulder! read more

Outstanding! Diners, Drive In's, & Dives! The burger made my husband's "Top 50" list the Bacon Jalapeño burger. It had great flavor without being too messy and what made it outstanding was the onion straws and the chipotle Mayo! The atmosphere was great along with the cocktails! The food was delicious & came out pretty quick. I tried the cauliflower bites & they were perfect with the sauce combo. The service was quick & every employee was helpful. The ambiance was a little more alive, not a peaceful sit down dinner typa spot. At first the low ceiling kinda freaked me out & was overwhelming but it's cool to know you can sign it if you want. I'll probably stop by once i'm in colorado again. read more

The ambiance was great here. This is a really cool little spot that is definitely a must go if you're in the Boulder area. The food was okay. We all had the build your own mac n cheese. This place is back to full powers after the 2020 pandemic. My son and I split the Obama and it might have been the best pizza I ever had. Not a crumb was left and the salty goodness with the honey drizzled crust left us both wanting more. Ambience is enough coolness to occupy your time as this place has been around for like 100 years! Our realtor is using the LoLo gifts and they are getting my husband and I out to both familiar places and new places. We used our LoLo gift which was free Sink Sliders and then also shared a Grilled Salmon Sammy and we had a delicious, hot and fresh tasting meal. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the greens and sauce balanced the fish perfectly. The sliders were juicy and perfect on a cold night. The staff greeted us and got us seated before the time they said we would be seated. The red wine choices were nicer than many "burger places" and my husband enjoyed a new beer that he tried. Our waitress was great and all were friendly. We are happy to be supporting locally owned businesses! read more

Overall pretty good!! Cool little spot. A little cramped inside and super loud but the food was good!! The POTUS pizza was extremely good! Was worried about the dough being soft but it was cooked very well!! Nice and crispy but not burnt. Also had the Texas jalapeño burger which was cooked to a perfect medium. Beyond the cook it was just meh. Kinda bland. Very little seasoning. Not bad though. Still ate it all! The fries are great! Had the Buffalo Mac and cheese as well. Not macaroni. It was good. The chicken was nice. Had a pretty good crunch. The blue cheese crumbles are a nice touch. The service was prompt, attentive and friendly! Lunch for 3, 1 cocktail, 1 soda came to about $75. My star rating: * Totally avoid. Why are you even open? ** Avoid unless the last restaurant on earth. *** Several important misses. Not recommended. **** Very enjoyable experience. Highly recommended. ***** Hits every mark of perfection. We went in 2022...and love burgers in general! PROS I guess 'cuz it's a hip place? Good size regular burger. Good service. Great fries. Good prices. Lively place. CONS I ordered a medium cooked burger - received rare to medium rare; I'm not one to complain to staff and did not this time. I don't like windowless restaurants. The graffiti on the walls may make the place eclectic, but to me it felt kinda dirty - and I'm not say it was. Poor area parking. read more

Good food, cool environment, but my girlfriend and I were visiting from Wisconsin and we stopped in to grab a bite to eat and a drink. The server was very kind but declined to even bring my girlfriends vertical Wisconsin ID to her manager for review (we are both 26 years old) I understand Boulder CO is a college town and surrounded by tons of college students but I think looking a bit closer or asking to see a Debit/Credit card to confirm the ID is legit would be a better option, because you may be refusing service to people with real ID's. read more

We were staying overnight in Boulder and needed something to eat. My daughter found The Sink. What a great place, very good food and ambience. We had Mac cheese, pizza, cowboy Ruben and Nashville hot chicken and finished with the cookie and ice cream. Wow left full and satisfied. Two thumbs up. Our cookie had to be sent back because it wasn't cooked enough first time, one of the managers came to apologize and make sure we were taken care of. Great service. read more

Great vibe and cool looking place, but the food was ok. We ordered their cheese pizza, gluten free pizza with basil, onion, olives and peppers, Buffalo Mac n cheese, and French onion soup. The food was pretty bland and none of us really enjoyed the food. The cool part about this place was that they give you markers to write your names or draw whatever you like on their ceiling, which was a fun experience for everyone. read more

1st visit. Really fun place to eat and hang out. Cool artwork and graffiti EVERYWHERE! Even on the ceilings . Walking distance from campus. We were seated promptly and Carly was a great server. We popped in before a show at the Fox Theater to get a drink and something to eat. We managed to snag a couple of seats at the bar. Staff seemed friendly but very busy. Our pizza was good (we got a supreme, aka "the POTUS"). Colorado style is new to me, so not sure if it always comes with a dry crust, but it would have been great to have either something to dip it in or simply brushed with some butter before serving. This seems like the type of place the college students might bring their parents, typical college bar vibe but well lit and decent food. read more

Atmosphere/cleanliness: Ambience was really cool and unique. The drawings in the wall were nothing like I've seen before. It could be slightly claustrophobic as the ceilings are very low. The table was pretty sticky, which can be expected from a college bar, but there were also a lot of flies around. Definitely not the cleanest joint I've been in. Food: I got the Buddha Pizza and I thought it was just fine. The crust was really good, which I normally never eat crust, so that's a plus for them! My boyfriend said the burger was pretty good, not better than average. Service: Good service, a little slow but no big deal. First time at this place, great ratings so we tried it! Fun atmosphere, very unique. Food was pretty good, a little greasy on the cauliflower but not bad. Juicy burgers/ creamy Mac and cheese! Really crazy how they charge for a very small portion for ranch for .65 cents. Service was okay. Not too many smiles or much greeting. Stopped in for a quick pre-dinner happy hour drink. You can sit at the bar or in the restaurant and get happy hour prices. They have a very nice cocktail menu all of their cocktails, beer, wine, and all spirits except for well are 50% off. I had theRaspberry White Chocolate cocktail, and it was like a piece of chocolate out of a Russell Stovers box! Sweet but delicious. My friends had the Sorority Sister and The Dirty Tito, and they were also both great. All appetizers are $2 off during happy hour, so looking forward to visiting for happy hour again next time I'm in Boulder! read more

The sink is such a fun and cute restaurant! I love the vibe and it is so unique. We got the Mac and cheese and the chicken strips. The max and cheese is so creamy and you can add whatever meat you want (we got bacon). The chicken strips were also good and you can ask for whatever sauces you want on the side (the honey mustard was sooo good). It's simple American bar food but you can't go wrong. Such a fun vibe! Boulder institution! We came early on a Saturday game day and we're able to be seated in about ten minutes, so not bad at all. By the time we left around 2pm though the bar was packed and the wait was long. Service was really good. The menu is huge and everything sounded great. The service and food here are amazing. The portions for the cost are good and the offerings are unique! There is custom art on all the walls and old newspaper articles covering the tables which is like a trip into Boulder History! Super cool. I stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday around noon. Great greeting at the door. Swift and comfortable seating. I ordered the French onion soup, Caesar salad and fries. Within five minutes the food arrived. Everything was lukewarm (including the salad). The croutons in the soup were soggy as if they'd been sitting prior to me even ordering. The fries still had a crisp to them but were lukewarm. The Caesar dressing was heavy on the anchovy. The romaine lettuce brown around the edges. The best part of the meal (sadly) was the hot green tea. (It was hot!) I have had really good experiences here generally so this was a surprise....and a disappointment. read more

If I ate here by myself... I probably would have given this restaurant a 2/5 stars because my salad (the Greekout) was insanely boring and dry, even though I added salmon and chicken to it. I even added avocado and asked for a side of guacamole to try and enhance the salad further and it just fell below par. The proteins were tasty, the chicken was moist and juicy, but everything else just fell flat. Oh and the guac was WAYYYY TOO CITRUSY for my liking. And sadly, I left The Sink HUNGRY. That being said, my husband... The biggest burger snob on the face of the planet... ABSOLUTELY LOVED HIS BURGER. I believe he said EXCEPTIONAL when I asked him his thoughts. I even heard him say to his parents (who also truly loved their food) that driving to Boulder (took us a little more than an hour to get there) to eat at The Sink was absolutely worth it! That being said, he did say the fries fell below par... So I guess if you're looking for a BOMB BURGER... Get on over to The Sink. I love the Sink! Best restaurant on the Hill! Great walkability from campus and other places on the hill and amazing food and drinks. I always get the Texas Onion Straw burger which was on DDD and it doesn't disappoint. So good and juicy and I love the crispy onions. Highly recommend the burgers! a great experience here at the sink! The walls are covered in historic artwork and it just has a cool vibe. Our server Nina was very kind and attentive. We tried the Buffalo wings which had great flavor and were very crispy. The server recommended the bacon jammin burger and cowboy Rueben. The burger was super delicious, I really loved it. The cowboy Rueben had sliced brisket which was extremely fatty so despite its good flavor i had to send it back. Nina removed the plate, asked if I wanted anything else instead, and took the sandwich off our bill no questions asked. Agave peach cider was a deliciously sweet summer beverage. Overall despite the fatty brisket I would 100% come back. read more

Went there on a Wednesday. It wasn't too busy. There was a 15 minute wait. So we waited at the bar where 3 other groups of two sat. After waiting 10 minutes without service from the bartender we figured we'd just order drinks when we were sat, so we waited outside. Another 10 minutes goes by and we never received a text to be sat. They said they took us off the list. No explanation why but they get us sat pretty quickly after we approached them. Once we're sat we are not approached by a waitress/waiter until 15 minutes later when we are forced to get one of their attention. I would have left at this point instead of raising my hand but we were pretty hungry. Instead of ordering alcoholic drinks we just ordered cokes, we didn't know how long it would take so we went with the safe option. We ordered an ugly meat lovers pizza and the Texas Onion Straw Burger. The pizza tasted like a frozen pizza you make at home and the crust was burnt. The burger was good, definitely not worth a 45+ minute wait but it tasted like a little heart or soul was put into it. History

Established in 1923.

The Sink is Boulder's oldest restaurant near CU Boulder. Originally a European-style restaurant named "Summer's Sunken Gardens" featuring a sunken fountain that patrons called "The Sink." The Pudliks purchased it in 1949, the name was officially changed, and the walls started filling with artist Mike Dormier's paintings. In 1955, the Sinkburger was born. Between 1974 and 1989, owner Herbie Kauvar covered the walls with pineboard and rebranded the restaurant as Herbie's Deli. In 1989, The Sink was reborn. In 1992, the Heinritz brothers purchased the restaurant. Updates to the full bar, tap system, and restaurant brought back artist Llloyd Kavich to paint the walls. We continue serving famous Sinkburgers and fresh, scratch-made food and drinks. In 2011, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives featured The Sink. In April 2012, President Barack Obama stopped by for pizza. Since then, The Sink has become a favorite for students, alumni, locals, visitors, and the occasional celebrity.

Meet the Business Owner: Chris, Mark, Tell H.

Brothers Chris and Mark Heinritz purchased The Sink in 1992 with little restaurant experience but a deep respect for one of Boulder’s most beloved institutions. More than three decades later, they remain the longest-serving owners in the restaurant’s history. They often describe themselves as caretakers of more than 100 years of memories and traditions. Their goal has always been to preserve what makes The Sink unique while ensuring it remains relevant for future generations. Under their leadership, The Sink underwent major renovations, introduced modern technology, expanded its food & beverage program, and improved the guest experience while maintaining its historic character. The famous artwork, signatures, Sinkburgers, and quirky atmosphere remain at the heart of The Sink. On a night before the KBCO festival my wife and I visited the Sink to find out about the allure of the historic bar turned deli, turned bar turned restaurant. What we discovered was an attraction and reasons to return for more insight. The builiding is old, but in great shape, and the inside while the look is initially gawdy, shows its age and the fantastic art work on the walls. The bar is right smack in the middle of the building, but that's not the only reason to be there we discovered. After sitting for a few minutes waiting for our server, we ordered the smoked jalapenos and bar food regular of spinach artichoke dip. The jalapenos proved to be a great little, spicy snack, as well did the spinach dip. There was an obvious notice of house made ingredients in both. We really enjoyed the attention to detail. The burgers are what you are told are the reason to stay, and they proved correct. Most pubs serve your burger pink or no pink and The Sink staff deliver my Mid Rare Burger Mid Rare. thank goodness, because I personally can't take over cooked meat. The attention to detail the server provided was actually surprising. We had a couple of check backs from the server and manager, and the upselling of desserts seemed like the staff was being trained quite well. While the restaurant is hard to tell if it is clean because of its age and pipes hanging from the ceiling, it does fit well into the bistro category. One Star for The Sink on The Hill, but only because zero stars isn't an option. Oh boy, where to start? Dining at The Sink in Boulder felt like embarking on a culinary adventure where the chefs said, "Rules? Never heard of 'em!" Especially when it comes to French onion soup. Imagine my excitement as a lover of French onion soup, only to be served a version so horrifyingly off-track, it could star in its own horror movie. Picture this: no crock, no bubbling blanket of cheese, not even a hint of caramelized onions. What I received was a sad, murky broth that looked like it had been strained through an old tea bag. And flavor? Let's just say it was so "unique" that my taste buds may never recover. There was onion, yes, but they were raw, as if the chef thought the "French" in French onion soup meant "fresh off the cutting board." And as for the Reuben? It was supposed to have sauerkraut, but maybe they ran out. Or maybe they think that tangy fermented cabbage is overrated? Either way, I was left with a sad, dry sandwich that made me wonder if it had been sitting around since the Nixon administration. In conclusion, I'm honestly torn about which dish took the gold in the race for "worst menu item," but the French onion soup takes the crown. If you're looking for French onion soup in any recognizable form, The Sink isn't the place for you. But if you're a thrill-seeker up for some culinary roulette, by all means--go right ahead! read more

Over rated. I feel sad that Obama experienced this when he was here in boulder. As for Guy Ferrari this gross place is right up his alley. Growing up in the same town we all knew his own restaurants are average at best. The service was rushed and she spoke at a extremely fast tempo. At one point she tried to take my pregnant wife's plate that she was still working on. I ordered a draft beer that was on special, and was billed the full price when the bill was presented. As for the food it was equivalent to what I would expect from a bowling alley. Overcooked, dry, and flavorless. The price although was outrageous for the quality that was served. After living in Boulder for many years, I was finally able to experience The Sink! What a fun and unique experience to say the least! We came in with our friends from Chicago who are triple-d fans. Our waitress Gwen told us about all of the history and fun facts. It's so nice to dine at a restaurant where the staff is enthusiastic about where they work and provide a great experience! We sat at the "Obama table". How cool! I ordered the beet salad and our friends had a triple-d pizza. I can't remember what kind but they enjoyed it very much. It is fun to go here for burgers before a game and to crack open a beer. I really like the burgers and the bbq chicken pizza. Its fun to go in because you can write on the walls, just not where the art work is. The art work is satirical and has news clippings from historical events. I love walking around and looking at the art work even though I have been there many times. At night it turns into a bar which is always fun. The morning of graduation it opens at 7am so that you can get a little buzz on for you last walk in CU as a student. I wouldn't advise you to go there if you are on the taller side. Boulder's Best. I really miss living in Boulder (and being in college) but whenever I can visit my first stop is the Sink! The menu is fresh (not just greasy burgers like everyone thinks...you can even get turkey burgers, buffalo or grass-fed locally raised burgers instead) My favorite has always been the Cali Chicken Melt. Do yourself a favor and try it. The sink is the peak college town bar experience, as a buffs fan, I got recommended to stop in The history makes the experience all the more worth the trip to see and maybe leave your name/sticker on the walls as well I flew from NC to try the perfect timing burger, I was new to a1 sauce on a burger but overall the burger was really good, it was charred, flavorful, and had a large oz patty I would 100% come back and our waiter was super nice, I think her name was Anna, she wants to graduate soon from CU and travel the world. The place is covered in graffiti and has such a cool, old-school vibe. Our server was super friendly and always had our backs. The Mac and Cheese there is to die for! I swear, it's the best I've ever had at any restaurant. It was so good that we came back the next day for more! Last year my friends and I had a big cookout for 4/20 which was a great deal of fun but this year we really wanted to hit the hill to get some grub after we hit up the field. A great place to meet friends in Boulder. Friendly atmosphere. The writing on the wall is fun to read and echoes the good times people have had at The Sink. Rumor has it Robert Redford cleaned out this place before (and maybe after) he got famous. Who knows who you will see there - maybe some upcoming STARS! Just ate here with some friends and had a terrible experience. Our personal waitress was great but one of my friends did not get to eat because they kept messing his food up. When his food finally came out it was still not right. The bread was soggy and definitely did not look enjoyable. The food is far better than typical bar food at a price that is affordable on a college budget. I dare say it's one of the best burgers I've ever had, and the buffalo didn't give me that awful heavy feeling I usually get after a big burger. Once I came to Boulder the first place that people told me to try was the sink. I have never not suggested it to other coming into Boulder now ever since I first tried it. The atmosphere that is present at the Sink is unlike any other restaurant in the area. The food is incredible, I recommend the buffalo wings and the bourbon jalapeño burger. read more

We brought along a friend who can eat gluten, and even she enjoyed the pizza and deserts. We had a little bit of trouble finding out if the mocktails were also gluten free. I had to ask about some of the menu items because in addition to having celiac, I also have wheat allergy and corn sensitivity. Gluten free doesn't cover it for me, so unfortunately, I have to ask so I know what will be safe. I had to push the waiter to actually find out the ingredients. His initial "the pizza is made with rice flour" didn't tell me what I specifically asked which is, does it have any corn derivatives. It does. It was difficult to get this information. It should not have been. I was informed by the waiter that the cook was in a bad mood. Presumably because I was asking about ingredients. I felt uncomfortable to ask further questions. But I learned enough to know that the pizza is not for me and the fries were probably safe. I settled on the "girl dinner" which was fries and Caesar salad. The ceasar came out with croutons. Fortunately, I did not let the cook's bad mood prevent me from asking if those were gluten free croutons. They were not. A new salad was brought out. Everything was tasty. I would have gotten a dirty martini as part of my meal but they did not have potato vodka. I had Prosecco instead. A few glitches but we will be back for the gf pizza that my kid can eat. We will probably get takeout, though. I felt not the best after my meal so and didn't get enough accurate info to determine why, so I am not likely to order food for myself next time.
