This is a kooky little place in Boulder, CO. I was unsure about this place before going, but I was so wrong to question it! If you're looking for a burger - this is the spot. It's a casual environment and above average for a small college town restaurant. The service was good, food came out in a reasonable amount of time, etc - it checks the essential boxes. As for the food, I got a burger with fries and a side of chili. Overall, great - especially for the price. You can tell there's history to the burgers and they've been doing this for quite some time. You can't go wrong with a burger here. Colorado also has some of the best beef so you really can't go wrong! Now, for the kicker... the chili was outstanding. Up there with the best chilis I've had in my life! It was completed unexpected and I will not be forgetting about this chili any time soon. Unfortunately, I live in Illinois and won't be able to go back anytime soon. It's tempting to ask if they can freeze and ship it to me LOL. For a quant diner, it's got my vote all the way for a casual lunch / dinner spot. 9 /10 read more

Another awesome lunch here. I had the bourbon jalapeno burger as did one of my friends. Other orders for my group were the cowboy Reuben and a grilled cheese. Everyone was extremely happy with their food. During lunch I realized that my first visit to the Sink (then known as Herbie's) was when I interviewed for my job at CU in 1977. I've had at least 100 meals here over 48 years, so many great memories! Keep it coming! And please please bring back, again, the Tres Fuegos burger! read more

This place is so fun. I love the low ceiling covered in various stickers from all over. You can get caught up just starting at the stickers all day. I haven't tried their food yet, I have only drank here. I do love their beer selections from local brewers. Sad Panda is one of my all time favorite beers and the manager told me that as long as he works there, they will have Sad Panda on tap. That mad me happy. I have heard great things about their food. I'll have to try it sometime while in the Boulder area. Highly recommend otherwise for a good drink and fun stuff to look at. read more

I checked out the Sink for the first time with a bunch of Boulder Alumni who let me know how legendary the place was. It certainly provided the bit of college nostalgia you expect when getting a burger near campus. Upon recommendation, I got the Buffalo Mac n cheese which was extremely decadent! The chicken was crispy and had the perfect amount of Buffalo sauce. I also tried a Sink Slider which was tasty. Others ordered the sink burger which seemed to be cooked well. I tried a bite of caesar salad which was very good! We had a few mistakes with our order. We received an incorrect pizza and bbq sauce on the sliders which we requested be left off. However, it was extremely busy and this isn't the type of place you should expect to be waited on hand and foot. For casual vibes, fun music, and an easy burger/pizza/wings, The Sink is your spot! read more

What would a trip to Boulder be without a trip to the Sink...it's a dive. But a good dive. Low ceilings...graffiti and hand painted art everywhere . Great tasting burgers and Mac/cheese meals. We had both for dinner. Love the fries and our server was a cool dude. I'd go back...pricier than a Cleveland burger place but it's Colorado...nothing good is cheap. read more

Fun happy hour with friends before dinner. Bar area was crowded so we had the option of sitting at a table which was nice since happy hour applied to all seating. I chose the Dirty Tito which was a simpler drink than what my friend's ordered (Sorority Sister and Raspberry White Chocolate) yet it took 10 minutes longer to get. If you are visiting Boulder as a perspective college, this is a great place to go for lunch. It is about a 5 min walk up the Hill from the student union (university memorial center). When you first walk in, you immediately notice a wall famous pictures from President Obama to Robert Redford to Anthony Bourdain that have enjoyed the establishment. Then you are immediately greeted by a friendly smile. . As you peak down the hall into the next room your eyes are captivated by the floor to low ceiling colorful artwork. The atmosphere is casual, friendly and artistic. My son and I had burgers, the size was smaller than expected but the unique flavors make up for it. We both gave a thumbs up to our burgers. The Casanova grass fed burger had crispy onion straws, which I wasn't sure if I would like. But the house-made truffle honey took over and was an excellent twist. My son had the Tres Fuego burger, he enjoyed it and said if you like spice, this is the burger for you! Worth walk up The Hill! read more

Just look at the picture of the buffalo chicken Mac and cheese and that's all you need to know!!! It was bomb. Definitely a college bar kinda place but great eats and vibe. Probably the best Mac and cheese I've ever had. Great service, good prices, hard to beat. Also loved the cherry lime Rickey mocktail. Food and drinks are excellent. We went as a large group and everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the Buddha Basil pizza and my husband had the grass fed BBQ Bacon burger. Both were delicious made with fresh quality ingredients. I also highly recommend the Michelada with the house made mix. I could have had that as my meal alone, but couldn't pass up the pizza. This place is a right of passage to any CU student and many have so many fantastic memories here. The inside is so fun filled with fun wall art and signatures from CU alum. The food is decent. I think it's a little expensive for the quality, but the CU pride makes up for it. Not a spot I would suggest you frequent for your bank account, but definitely somewhere to come a couple times to feel the love of the community. read more

We were staying overnight in Boulder and needed something to eat. My daughter found The Sink. What a great place, very good food and ambience. We had Mac cheese, pizza, cowboy Ruben and Nashville hot chicken and finished with the cookie and ice cream. Wow left full and satisfied. Two thumbs up. I've heard a lot of great things about this place and decided to check it out myself. The inside had a super cool dive bar vibe. There is writing all over the ceilings and new guests are welcome to sign the walls when they leave. We came here for lunch on a Tuesday and it wasn't busy at all. I've heard that there is normally a wait on the weekends though. My friend and I go the classic margarita and the blackberry lemonade mojito. They were both super tasty! For food we got the BBQ bacon burger and the sink burger. Both of the burgers were cooked perfectly and very delicious! I recommend this place for anyone visiting Boulder! read more

History

Established in 1923.

The Sink was originally a European-style restaurant called "Summer's Sunken Gardens." It featured a large, sunken fountain patrons referred to as "The Sink." The restaurant was purchased by a CU alum in 1949 and the name was officially changed. The walls of the Sink were quickly filling up with local art. In 1955, the world famous Sink Burger was born. Between 1974 and 1989 The Sink's owners called it Herbie's Deli. The Sinkburger was still served but the art was covered with pine boards. In1989, The Sink was reborn. The name was officially changed back to the Sink, the pine boards taken down, and a full bar was installed. In 1992 the Heinritz brothers purchased the Sink and continue the tradition by providing Boulder with their famous Sinkburgers and a wide variety of fresh, scratch-made food and drinks. In 2011 Diners Drive-Ins and Dives featured The Sink and then in April 2012 President Obama stopped by for a pizza. What great honors!

Meet the Business Owner: Mark and Chris H.

As brothers, they purchased The Sink in 1992 to continue its almost 100-year legacy as the oldest bar and restaurant in Boulder. In an interview with Eater.com, brother Chris Heinritz speaks to the brother's background and history with The Sink, "We had no experience in the restaurant industry, and I was only 24 at the time. We asked a lot of questions and made some mistakes, but fortunately, The Sink already had a loyal following. We tried not to change much of anything until we got our heads around it. We brought the first computers into the building and modernized it. We're always trying to stay true to the roots and make it a viable place for today's market. In 1995, the building was pretty tired, so we did a significant remodel. We even put an airflow system in that The Sink had never had; there was no fresh air into the building. It was a pretty grungy place, so we made it a more enjoyable experience while still staying true to the funky character of it all.

There's a paid parking lot across the street and street parking, it's so close to parking typically it's smooth sailing but it's also on the Hill so weekends/prime times do get busy.
