I recently had my first haircut with Gina Garoogian. As a curly girl, switching hairdressers is always a risk. A butchered haircut has massive consequences with curls and you can look terrible for months! Rest easy my friends, Gina knows what she is doing and did a great job. Gina was approachable, communicative, and has years of experience cutting all kinds of hair. I also appreciated her efficiency. She was really fast and very confident. She suggested a few cut ideas which were out of my comfort zone and she quickly adjusted what she was doing. She said it was more important to gain my trust than to do it all in one sitting. On another note, I had given myself a bad hair dye and the color was carrot orange. Gina also doesn't mince words (which I love) and told me she would like to correct the color. I had not had my hair cut during COVID, and it had been over a year since it was styled and highlighted. I scheduled an appointment with Side Door, and when none of my prior stylists worked there any longer, I booked with AnnMarie. I had waited until having both vaccines, but still wanted to be cautious, especially indoors. AnnMarie was AMAZING! She understood what I wanted (I had kind of begun to like having a little longer hair!), and made recommendations for highlighting that would look natural. I felt TOTALLY safe in Side Door. The clients were well spaced, and AnnMarie took the time to disinfect between each step. I particularly liked how she assumed that I was not the type of person to pre-schedule appointments every few weeks. I followed my stellar hair stylist to The Side Door Salon from the West End Salon (my review on Rebekah can be found there). Before my first visit I was stoked that the location was even more convenient for me (being on foot most of the time downtown Boulder is my Oyster). The check-in desk is front and center when you arrive and the gals are always happy to offer you a complimentary beverage - be it a can of lime Perrier or a hearty glass of Pinot Noir (be careful, on those long color appointments the wine can sneak up on you - it's tasty but strong, particularly if you go for that second glass). There is comfortable seating in the waiting area which butterflies out from the check-in desk. In addition there are magazines both out front as well as out back near the dryers/hair treatment processing round table. The salon offers lots of new technology for hair drying/treatments. My only wish is that they would also upgrade their hair washing stations as they could be a bit more comfortable (my neck never does like those sink edges even with the warm towel providing support). Each stylist station features a little shelf for your beverage/phone, as well as a locker for you to insert your coat/etc. (I was pleasantly surprised my large GoLite backpack fit in there on my last visit). I would like to comment upon my new colorist Lindsay who I was stoked fit me in for a color earlier this week. My appointment spanned several hours and I never felt rushed or in the way though I'm sure to have lapsed into her next appointment. She was happy to consult with me for several minutes regarding what I've had in the past, what I envision for my hair and then presenting me with my options and discussion the pros/cons for each one from there. My hair is dark brown and I've been sporting a light brown/blonde vibe - not always the easiest thing to put on a colorist that hasn't seen you in the past particularly when you come in with over an inch of root (oops!). Looking forward to many more visits to this salon. Would love to see them do some parties like I've seen at other salons in Downtown Boulder. read more

I highly recommend Lisa for color. My hair is blonde but has some reddish undertones. Every time I have gone to someone else for color and highlights, my hair turns brassy and orange within three weeks. I now travel to Denver from San Francisco just to have Lisa do my hair because it never turns brassy/orange when she does it. The color always looks natural and amazing and stays that way until my next appointment. Lisa also has amazing intuition when doing hair - I have never been disappointed after a cut or color. Absolutely the worst experience!! I called for a walk in haircut for my 12 year old daughter. The girls at the counter were on the phone and took minutes to greet us. The stylist came over, we said she did not need a shampoo or a blow dry, only a trim. My daughters hair is long and one length. It was a quick basic trim, took 7 minutes top. Like I said she did not get it washed, she did not have it dried. The haircut cost $75. On top of a $10 tip. This was a kids haircut that took all of 7 minutes. I was very upset and will never ever return again. The women who did my daughters hair was not nice and very snippy when I complained about the price. Words cannot express the level of disappointment I have about my last experience at Side Door. I'd been coming here for years and never had an issue until I went to Christine. She did a rush job on a color and botched my cut to the point it will take years to recover. My hair came out damaged, uneven and a far cry from anything I described. She was so cold and rushed when I told her it wasn't what I was hoping for. This made me feel sick to be so talked down to - I'm left with the half assed job she did. I just tried this salon for the first time. I've never had an issue communicating my desired length and style. She cut 4inches more than I asked!!! At first I thought the front was shorter than I wanted but then I realized the whole head was cut shorter than my shoulders. I'm wearing it in a pony now until it grows at least2inches. I like to change the color of my hair with the seasons. She is always able to pull the exact color I want even though I cant describe it well. She is amazing with the way she color and cuts my hair. Take your time and money to the Parlour or somewhere else in town if you want a quality salon experience. I tried the Side Door for the first time (my hairdresser moved) and was achingly disappointed with not only my experience, but also my highlights, cut and product I bought. For marketing themselves as having uncompromising quality and as a premier salon in the west, they've got major turns to make it to get to that standard they are promoting themselves as. My experience in a summary: The product I paid full price for had been opened and used before (found out once I got home), the woman I was scheduled with randomly when I called, Amy Kender, did a poor job on my color and cut ($160+ for a partial and trim; I left the salon with a wet head, no style was included). After playing phone tag for a week with Amy, we finally connected and Amy also told me over the phone that she was also NOT satisfied with the work she did on my hair and scheduled me to come back in. When I arrived, she told me she thought I was someone else, started pointing at the highlights from my last job at the Parlour (taking credit for those), and so I told her to not worry about it and walked out frustrated as she had agreed that she did not do a good job. I work with a lot of ladies that get their hair done often in my office and they also could not tell I had anything done to my hair & agreed I overpaid. Final reason to not get services here: I called and spoke to the manager of the salon at least three weeks ago and there has been absolutely no follow up. Avoid this place and go somewhere where the pricing, quality and overall experience add up to what you're looking for in a chic salon. read more

I love this salon! I love my hairdresser Kiki, she is kind, funny and most of all really talented at cutting and coloring my hair. My whole family has migrated from other hairdressers to her. I also want to say that when you walk into a salon the folks that greet you make a big difference. I have had such a contnuously good experience. the past few months Megan has been extra helpful. It's not just the hairdressers who make the salon great, its a team effort. She greets me, I immediately feel cared for, and then after the hair appointment she makes the whole process of buying product and paying my bill seamless. Laurie Edwards is the most professional stylist I have ever trusted with my hair. I am a hairstylist myself and have experimented WAY too much with my hair. It took me four years to grow out all the damage from beauty school and my hair was finally long and natural...although it was frayed and all one length. It lacked any life at all.. Seeing all the amazing reviews about this salon, I decided to make an appointment. I went on the salon's website and read about Laurie and she seemed very well educated and experienced in the field. I was so excited the receptionist put me with her. She was so welcoming and took one look at my fine, frayed long hair and knew exactly what to do. Her confidence truly put me at ease. She was so easy to converse with and made the experience so relaxing. The end result...FANTASTIC! I am so impressed with how perfect my hair looks. This place is a bit pricey, but if you want to leave the salon looking great then this is one of the best spots in Boulder. Going to school in Boulder, I've been told by so many girls that the salons are terrible in Boulder - that they always mess something up. This wasn't the case at the side door. Also, coming from Chicago, I will admit that I have high standards with regards to hair... Some of the best salons are from my home. This place met my standards and I was very happy with my color.
